Hopefully everyone reads Yelp reviews at this point, sure wish I had. If I could give a negative star rating I would. This company was recommended to me by our realtor when closing on a house last year. The necessary repairs were made but Bruce never returned to finish the weatherizing of our chimney exterior. He was paid $485 to do that by the seller and never returned. It's been over a year now and I haven't been able to get a response from Bruce to the multiple voice mails and text messages sent to him. Not surprisingly his email listed through the business is inoperable.... I will be contacting the Contractors State Board and filing a complaint and encourage the others who have experienced the same lack of professionalism and ethics to do the same. read more

Called this company last October to sweep the chimney and install a new chimney cap at my elderly parent's cabin in Tahoe. They did sweep the chimney, probably because we were standing right there. I also paid him $145 to install a new chimney cap. It's February now. Still waiting for the chimney cap. I and my family members have called the owner of Ashes to Ashes many times. Every time we reach him, he says "I'll install it tomorrow" or "I'll install it next week." Every time, he has failed to deliver on his promise. We've never received a call back when we've left a message. I called tonight to tell him we were reluctantly going to have to take him to Small Claims Court as my parents, who are 88 and 92, couldn't afford to just give him $145. He said he couldn't remember the job. I gave him the address. I asked him why he hadn't done the work. He said he couldn't say why. He said that if he hadn't installed the chimney cap this week to go ahead with the Small Claims Court claim. That's weird, to say the least. I won't be holding my breath to see if he follows through. After paying him (why did I wait until it was too late???) I looked up some of the reviews online. Hoo boy. They were bad. All 1-star except one where the reviewer obviously made a mistake. Oh...there was another one...by the owner of the company. He gave his own business 5-stars and said that the other reviewers had lied. Really. (Unfortunately this is the first review to go on Yelp. I didn't see the other bad reviews until it was too late.) Do NOT do business with this person. His business should be shut down. It's hard to believe this man would take advantage of elderly people. But he did. And he has done it before. Unfortunately, he'll probably do it again. Don't be one of his victims. Almost forgot to mention: Ashes to Ashes Better Business Bureau is "F". read more

I have the same story as previous posts. I paid Bruce $1200 for materials that were never produced for a job that was never done. I have made numerous calls, sent numerous texts and emails - to no avail, He also subcontracted an indoor job for me and it was the worst job I have ever seen - black paint where matching stain was promised in his contract. He met me at my house to see that job and agreed that it needed fixing, even agreed that he would be paying for that fix. In fact - no contact from Bruce in regards to this issue either. As previous posts indicate - RUN From this company or you will be relieved of your money with no work or materials to show for it. This is his new number (530) 525 4444. Where is he? My check cleared the bank on the deposit to do the work and still the work was not even started for 2 months. Then the work was shoddy and incomplete. The State of CA does not have a contractors license for him under the name of Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust or Bruce Kegebein. read more

I agree with the prior reviews. RUN FROM THIS BUSINESS!!!! I called Bruce in a break from a big storm as our wood stove chimney was not venting. He came out and cleaned the chimney and cleared ice from the cap so it could draw. Very nice. He said this problem would occur again as we had the wrong cap. I gave him a check for $295 to replace the cap (this is a vacation cabin so we are not there consistently). He said he had to order the cap. He cashed the check on Jan. 31st. The cap still has not been replaced and it is now March 15th. During that time, I have left over 10 voicemail messages (he never answers the phone) and have not received one return call. I just left a message today stating that the cap must be replaced by the end of next week or I am filing in Small Claims Court. We will see if I get a response. I just wish I had done my usual and looked on Yelp first but because this is a second home, I didn't follow my usual protocol. Stay clear of this business!!! read more

This company is a SCAM!!!!! Bruce and Brent Kegebein are THIEVES! Bruce came by the house, seemed like a nice guy and set a date and time to fix our chimney. Bruce asked for a small deposit and we gave it to him ($200.00). He ran to the bank and cashed the check. We have never seen him again. This man is NOT licensed and is known in the area as a con man! BBB rates this company an "F"! If he owes you money, go to the police right away and file a fraud report. The police will not take this person seriously until they get enough complaints. Insist on a report and pass the word so the con man doesn't steel from anyone again. review helps others learn about great local businesses. Hired Bruce to make repairs to firebox, cracks, seal, etc.; provided a $700.00 deposit; they performed majority of work. Paid remaining balance with understanding that they would finish the sealing once the rain subsided/mortar dried out . . . boy did they put off . . . they never returned . . . out $550.00 for the sealant and $195.00 for the spark arester in chimney cap. Just reported to State Contractor's Board and fill be filing a small claims this week - they are a scam!!!!! read more

This company is terrible. I called for a quote and when they came out (late), I met with the owners son. He wasn't able to give me a quote until he spent 20 minutes on the phone with his father. Then I spoke with his father and for the first time was told there would be a 85.00 service charge for coming out to go be me a quote. Tried to get an explanation, but still haven't. Don't use this company if you are looking for an honest contractor. read more

If you are willing to work with Bruce's schedule, he and his son are great to work with. They came through for us, did a very good job in retrofitting our wood stove/chimney. We just had to work around their schedule. read more

scam! do not pay a dime up front to bruce at ashes to ashes or aa chimney. we paid him half of a job he bid on 8/02/11. our check was for $475. he said he would be back and finish the job within a week. never saw him again. after multiple phone calls over the three + years a finally received a check for half of the amount with promises to send the other half in two weeks. that was at least six months ago and i can never reach a live person. it's a waste of time to leave messages even though i always do. please do not give this person any more money! read more

Only 1 star because you have to give at least 1. Multiple promises, multiple calls from my end, never a return call. Never delivers and just ignores all attempts. Finally got his cell phone by accident from an employee 530-362-1006 and Bruce Kegebein gets mad when he answers and you ask him what are you going to do. read more
