Hard to find Schlitz now days.
    Heath E.

A couple nights ago as I sat in my sad apartment waiting on 5 o'clock so I could justify pouring myself a drink, I realized that if I didn't have any human contact, outside of yelling at my "friends" on Facebook, that I was going to scratch that tickle in my throat with a 12 gauge. Well, Ashley Street Station was just what I was looking for. The lovely young lady at the bar was very warm and inviting. I asked her if there were any specials to be had. She replied that there weren't. I was a bit crestfallen but with the prices as low as they were I soon pepped up. $2 for a Schlitz can. No glass or any of that other fancy minutiae you get from other places just so they can justify a $4.50 Budweiser. As it was a Monday afternoon the place was pretty deserted when I first arrived. Just an old timer huddled in the corner hanging on to the last vestige of life his arthritic fingers could cling to. The girl serving up life's greatest pleasure and I chatted for a time about comics and movies and Doctor Who. It was then that some slack-jawed puzzlewit walks in and sits much closer to me than necessary and begins to drone on and on about vampires. I tune him out and ask the girl to turn up the baseball game. And I hate baseball. It was too late. This bespectacled muttonhead had ruined the illusion. I had 2 or 6 beers and paid the lady. I'll be returning soon. Make sure to tip handsomely because a good bartender is like a good marriage, few and far between.

It's not far from the heart of downtown Live Oak and not far from the railroad tracks, either, of which you become quickly aware when a freight train passes by. Despite the small space, they have a pool table inside, a bar (of course) and that pool table doubles as a buffet table when they have potlucks and the like. There is apparently also an outdoor tiki bar area in the yard behind the building but I didn't go back there. Beer is the preferred spirit it seems and the crowd is about 99% locals, mostly middle-aged but some in their early to mid twenties. The theme therefore is country/biker to an extent but they were playing old hard rocks standards when I was there and then . . . something . . . not sure what it was, but some song I remember from the early 2000s that probably was Linkin Park or a band that copied Linkin Park. So aside from the B-list or C-list early 2000s blast from the past, a very cool and low-key bar in a very handy location in Live Oak.
