    Cider and donuts

They opened this year after being closed for a few. They have a really cute wooden train and car for the kids to play on out front. This is a Very old school/no frills cider mill. What really makes them special is the apple cinnamon donuts! The cider is pretty good too!

Cinnamon Apple Donuts and Apple Cider!

Sooooo I had never been to an apple orchard before. These just don't exist in NYC or far west! So when my girlfriend insisted we swing by one while in Michigan, I was particularly excited! As soon as you walk into Ashton Orchards, you're senses are treated to a wealth of aromas ranging from apple to cinnamon, honey to jams. The selection is pretty impressive, consisting of pretty much everything that I mentioned in the smells section. Various flavors of honey, different fruit jams, apple cider by the cup/bottle/jug/gallon, and apple cinnamon donuts line the store shelves. We picked up a bottle of honey*, two small bottles of apple cider for immediate consumption**, and a box of apple cinnamon donuts. After paying the bill (which was a bit expensive, but then again most honey and juice products are), we sat down on the benches outside to devour our treats. Not even the abundance of bees (did I mention that all the above products, including honey, are made on site?), could stay me from enjoying the freshness of the cider and near perfect consistency of the donuts! My girlfriend says this isn't even the best orchard in town. The first one we tried didn't open until much later that day, so we defaulted to this one. I can barely imagine how good the other place is, if this place blew my mind!! *FYI: TSA are mean. They take away your honey unless it's checked. If you are flying out, don't buy the honey unless you check your bags!! **Don't worry! We bought a gallon to share with everyone else at home! We're not *that* cruel... : )

This Orchard really knows it's apples and peaches. Dennis Ashton is an expert farmer and the produce is worth every penny!

The lemon passed the 2 bite test (it should only to take 2 to reach the filling) and it was so very tasty. The raspberry was a 3 biter, fill was slightly off center, but it was loaded-fruity, not too sweet. Definitely worth a trip. The search for paczki continues. Don't miss out.

I pictured myself sitting at a counter with a hot cup of coffee and a fresh donut. Unfortunately, the reality didn't match the photos. The shop itself is a bit dingy and dim, and the counter shown in pictures was blocked with boxes and plastic--no place to sit. I arrived before 11 AM on a Friday and the selection was already pretty picked over. The one worker got swamped when a crowd came in, and the tight space made the whole experience feel rushed. I ordered two donuts (cheap, which was nice), but they were tossed in a bag together with no divider, so the frosting stuck together which made it a pain to get them out of the bag to eat. No napkins were given. Fortunately, I remembered to ask for some. One donut was chocolate with sprinkles, the other had buttercream filling with white frosting. Both were decent, nothing amazing. I tried to sit outside, but the chairs were old and dirty. They looked liked they came from an old elementary school. To top it off, someone came up trying to sell me a "$600" motorcycle helmet for $100. I decided to make a quick exit. If I lived nearby, I might grab a dozen to-go, but it's not worth a special trip. Just average overall.

I wish I could have gotten more but my doctor doesn't like me eating any. Moderation, am I right? Walked in and was greeted by a very friendly and polite staff. We explained we were all former Regular Customers, but no longer live in the area. They even knew the friends from both Florida and from Massachusetts wouldn't typically find the nutty donut, while we grew up with them in our arsenal. They had a great selection and all were fresh that day, some were actually just recently put in the case fresh. I chose a lemon, Bismarck, a cinnamon roll with maple frosting and nuts on top, two of the glazed donuts, one mixed fruit fritter, and a nutty donut. About 1/4 way home, I inhaled the Bismarck and my only regret is not getting a dozen donuts. That donut was still warm and was better than anything bought from a national chain, and you know who those are. The store is clean and kind of nostalgic. They had a display of vintage looking coffee cups but we were not sure if they were for sale or used for art.
