I received a vegan Korean cookbook and have been trying to track down some of the various spices and sauces that the cookbook calls for. I found Asia Food as a recommended grocer and decided to try it out. Asia Food is located in a stand alone building on York Road. It has a private parking lot. Inside the building is pretty big. There is a lot of space on the shelves, making the grocer appear more bare than it is. I believe the shelves are organized by country but I am not sure as there aren't labels for the aisles. I found most of what I was looking for by walking the aisles multiple times. There were a few things that I was unable to find and had to go elsewhere for. There is a credit card minimum which it tells you by the register. Prices seemed reasonable though I don't have much to compare to as my Asian grocer experience is limited. Overall, I will return here for my Asian staples. read more

We really like this place; it's low on atmosphere but gets high marks for quality and service. It's not a huge place -- not like H Mart, e.g. -- but we always find something new, plus staples in the way of noodles, condiments, and produce. Small mom and pop Asian market that has a little bit of everything. Small produce area with staples like ginger, basil, green onion, daikon, etc. It's nice to have nearby for when I need some soy sauce, hot sauce or noodles... staff are very friendly and try to help!! This was once my go-to spot for Asian groceries. A local, mom and pop place that had everything from Korean to Thai, plus a variety of serving and cooking goods. They still carry a variety of shelf stable items - rice, oils, vinegars, pastes, sauces, noodles ... etc. But their refrigeration and freezer units have been breaking down one by one, so they no longer have a variety of fresh meats or vegetables, and what they have I don't recommend. read more

After moving from a place that had one Asian grocery store within an hour radius to Baltimore that has four+ Asian grocery stores, I obviously had to try them all! I was pleasantly surprised that, despite being smaller than Great Wall, this store had a larger selection of pots, pans and dishware. However, I came here for my weekly grocery haul, and, honestly, could not find everything I wanted. The veggie selection was of good quality, but very limited. There was no fresh fish or meat section either. If you want Asian sauces/spices/dried goods, rice, noodles or kitchen supplies, this place is good, and the owners are very friendly. read more

I live nearby and before I had a car this was the place to go to for Chinese and Asian food and ingredients. Now I only buy some snacks and frozen cuisines here that are not available in other Chinese/Asian markets. The owners are always very nice and friendly, and they help me get products not available in other places. Prices are reasonable. And now that I have a car, the shop's parking lot provides a very convenient place to park, compared to Potung trading with only street parking. The products are fine; in particular the kitchen stuff, utensils and rice are even better than some of the large Asian supermarkets in the Baltimore area. But the vegetable on the rack might be a bit old, and the shop does not have any kind of fresh meat or fish or poultry, only some frozen ones. Moreover, they sometimes sell "secondary" brands instead of more popular brands in Asia. For example, for rice biscuits, Wangwang is definitely the most popular brand in China and Taiwan; but the shop sometimes only has products from less well-known brands. They do have a good selection of frozen Asian fast food and mooncake (during the mid-autumn festival period). All in all a nice small place for Asian and some other food. read more

I am SO happy to have found a closer Asian market to our house. I grew up in ellicott city and it's been a bit annoying driving 30 minutes just to get what few special ingredients I might need for home cooked dishes. This place is pretty bare bones and no bells/whistles but it has all the essentials! Completely happy with their small selection. read more

Not just Asian, but Indian too! I love love love this spot. It's just a ten minute drive from my place and far closer than the Howard County outposts for Asian goods. The staff is super friendly and best of all: Will Order For You! I wanted a case of extra firm tofu. They stock silken. But, when I asked, they ordered a case and it came in a few days. I wanted vegan 'shrimp'. I asked, they ordered that and vegan 'lobster' too. The prices for cilantro and other herbs can't be beat. 99 cents for the same bundle that Giant charges 1.69 for. White pepper? $2. Five spice? $1.50. Loads of vegetarian sauces (fish left out) if you are inclined. And, more than one brand of rice vinegar, tamari or ponzu sauce. Ahh, yes. Can't forget. Three kinds of dried mushrooms. Lots of bean sprouts, cabbages, limes, tomatoes -- all for less than at the grocery store. Oh, also a great place for wheat gluten / seitan (canned) and faux duck. They are so excited when I purchase and almost pleased that I'm making Asian food. I'm able to easily make Chinese and Thai fare from this store. Korean seems a *little* thin, but I haven't done too much Korean cooking. Finally, all the sushi making supplies you'd want. Wasabi, sushi season sauce, ginger, sushi rice. You name it, they have it! The frozen seafood is out of this world too! They recently added about two aisles of Indian foods. Beans, spices. All very competitively priced. Total fan of Asia Food :D read more

I just LOVE this place. They carry essential Asian staple foods and cookware. The first time I ever came here, probably in 2001 or 2002, it was much smaller (I bought my first ever rice cooker from the store at this time! $20 and still works like a champ!). They've since redesigned the layout of the store. It's much larger and has a larger refrigerated and frozen section. They have very good prices and I love being able to buy my kimchi and other basics without having to trek out to H-Mart. The people who work here are always very nice... they always seem so delighted with my purchases. I always get an enthusiastic "YOU (aka. non-Asian) like to eat this!?" or they will inquire what I am planning to cook with my purchases, or make recommendations, etc. which is always nice. I do wish they had a larger produce section here, but it's so small I guess that would be a stretch. They DO accept credit here, although there's a $10 minimum. read more

I have to give them 5 stars because I live nearby and this place means I never need to drive to the giant for groceries. It's just a short stroll to the freshest, most beautiful scallions, ginger, Japanese /Chinese eggplants (you know, those skinny ones), and other Asian staples. If I could ask for some improvements, it would be for better fresh garlic (they do have great, already peeled garlic) and ground pork (even a few frozen blocks of the stuff would do just perfect. It's the one thing that makes me have to drive to the grocery store for when I want to make dumplings. read more

This is a 3.5 star place for me. The prices are great first of all and they had a great selection of many things, but they don't carry many high quality products. For making sushi, there are certain brands on kani to use and they don't have the high quality ones. This also is in addition to other products. While you can get the basics there, good rice, seaweed even cooking utensils, they lack in quality. On the good side everyone who works in there is very friendly and always willing to help. read more

We went a few days ago and was sadly disappointed with the lack of a meat section. Everything meat or fish related they have looks like it has been frozen for years. While the lady is nice and the place is good in a jiffy if you need chinese related food, I can't justify going to this place now that great wall has opened in catonsville and with putong trading here in the city as a second choice. read more

This warehouse/bulk food store is a hidden York Road treasure for all things East and South Asian in North Baltimore. 25 lb. rice bags, hard-to-find green teas, fresh and frozen specialty items, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese spices, candies, canned goods, shrimp chips, and the like - they are all here. You can also get rice cookers, woks, kitchen utensils, and seasonal goods for Chinese New Year and the like. Also good dried mushrooms. Really a cool stop, and one that surprisingly few people seem to know about (they don't advertise or anything). We loved it and felt like it was "our" secret, although of course many others frequent this place. Try coming here with an open mind and empty stomach! Stop at the ATM first for cash, however, as they don't take credit. read more

They don't have as many selections as Super H Mart in Catonsville. However, you can find all basic Chinese cooking ingredients (e.g. cooking rice wine) and a good variety of sauces. They also have a limited selection of fresh vegetables, not too many to choose from, but the price is low and the veggie seems fresh. They also sell frozen foods like dumplings, onion pancakes, and sweet sticky rice ball (ton-yuan). You can also get some cooking wares in there. The owners are Taiwanese, and both of them are very friendly. They will help you to find the stuff you need if you can't locate them in the store. read more

It's small and bare bones, but if you are used to shopping at Giant or Superfresh, this store is a great place to start spicing up your cuisine. The staff are friendly and the prices seemed to me extremely reasonable. After visiting once, I could finally make pad se ew the right way! Not a bad place for non-produce Asian staples. I will confirm that yes, they do accept debit and credit now. Like I said produce selection is very limited but they have Chinese eggplant, bok choy, ginger, and other staples. However, a wide variety of spices, condiments, canned foods, etc. I even found the elusive kecap manis here that wasn't available in HMart. GREAT selection of cookware for very reasonable prices. It definitely tops all the other Asian stores for that. Unfortunately, it's not a one-stop shop for all my Asian food needs which is why it gets only 3 stars. I loved this place for what it had! Very cheap, and had a really great selection of things for the home, like bowls and tea pots as well as rice cookers and an enormous selection of woks. The store is large, yet sparse, though it did have a great selection of spices and niche ingredients. I'd highly recommend it, despite them not having rice sticks. read more

I love it here, whenever I come in they treat me like family. They are so nice and helpful. I always find fresh vegetables and they carry a variety of frozen sea food and meats. I always leave with a full bag of groceries for under $15. Quality has not been an issue. read more

I stumbled upon this grocery store a couple of weekends ago since it is not on my way to my usual destinations. I promised myself in the car that i would walk out with one item and from the looks of the deserted parking lot on a Saturday afternoon was sure I would stick to my promise (basically i had low expectations). To my delight, this place carried a lot more than I expected (though does not compare to H mart). I was also happy to find Indian items there though the types of items and brands are limited. They have dried beans and lentils and some frozen items too (samosas, parathas). The produce section though small had a good selection of not so commonly found veggies (baby bok choy, curry leaves, sprouts, etc) and were very well priced. a conversation with a couple that had been visiting the store for a while led to my understanding that they are slowly expanding their selection. I am really glad to have this place for a quick stop for my Asian (including Indian) ingredient needs. Saves me the trouble to travel all the way to Howard county for essentials. read more
