It does not in any way reflect negatively on the store in general. To be honest, they have some of the freshest produce and seafood in the area. The udon noodles I get for my pho are amazing. I'm today years old to realize this Chinese supermarket not only carry a large variety of Chinese food and premade food, they also carry traditional Chinese prayer / 拜拜 accessories. So you don't need to go to Chinatown in San Francisco or in New York to find these things. I have been coming to the Great Wall supermarket for years. I can always find fresh fruits and vegetable here with a reasonable price. Customer service are pretty good as well. People are friendly. The checkout lines can get along when they are busy which is just like all the other grocery stores. I was also able to find some of the rare find Chinese snacks and a frozen dishes here. Came to this location of Great Wall for the first time. Have been to their location in Rockville before. Bought some groceries and some lunch from their food court. What's Hot - Food court. Not every Great Wall has a food court, so that this location has one is a definite plus. Excellent price of $9.99 for a combination of steamed white rice and 3 dishes. The 3 dishes I ordered- stir fried green beans, braised pork belly, and tofu stuffed with ground beef. Excellent portions. I also purchased their pig ear. - Variety. This location is larger than their Rockville location, which means they have a more extensive variety of products, including different options/brands of their products. For example, there are multiple brands of fermented tofu, azuki beans, kelp/seaweed, tofu, etc.... There's a wider variety of snacks, sweet treats, etc... - Prices. Everything appears reasonably priced, which will also be dependent on exactly what type of product you're looking for. - Parking lot. They have a pretty decent size parking lot in front of the store, especially because this location is in a plaza with other shops. Definitely helpful. - Cleanliness. Even though this location is larger than their Rockville location, the overall cleanliness of the store is pretty good. What's Not - Food court. The quality of their dishes are hit or miss. For example, their stir fried green beans was delicious, tender, not too soft, and well-seasoned. Their braised pork belly was a bit too rough in terms of texture. Their stuffed tofu was a good flavor, but the ground beef was too rough, as well. The pig ears was pretty expensive- $15. It appears their pre-packaged dishes are priced based on weight, so be prepared for higher prices. There is also a small bakery within their food court, which is great, but the reliability also appears to be hit or miss. When I arrived, there were only a handful of baked goods. When I pinched them on the outside of their packaging, the tenderness of some baked goods seemed off. I'm uncertain what their policy is in terms of how long they leave out their baked goods. There's an abundance of different foods at Great Wall and a wide variety of fresh seafood to buy. You can get a lunch box and pick 3 cooked dishes with rice and small soup, for $9.99. Their selection is very wide, vegetables, chicken, various pork dishes to pick from. My husband got the longan fruits which were pretty pricey but very fresh. I would have loved to browse longer but it was so cold we couldn't help but try to get out as fast as possible. It was warmer outside in the 40s than inside so come warmly dressed. read more

The grocery store has gone downhill and needs a code inspector to come in and check temperature for the meats along with packaging dates before someone dies from spoiled meat. An odor of durian, dead shellfish, and dried mushrooms permeates through the air, a heavy stench curtain will follow you from the store.The meat will often not have packing date or best before dates present onthe label. Blood trails from the butchering section will lead you the meats packed on cooled shelves. When asked about the meat during check out i was yelled at by a latin american employee in spanish, she said meat is good over and over.she then proceded to poke the meat in the container until the package ruptured. First, my three start rating is because I visit this market before and had ok experience. Typically, I would have given a two star given yesterday's situation but it's a store I will go to if I need something specific.... because it might be the only place that would have it. The last three times I have visited the store (spring, fall, & winter) the indoor temp is extra cold. It's cold to the point that I am zipping around to get my items quickly to get out. Are they paying to at least heat the building or is this a way to save money? On my visit yesterday, my mom and I shopped around for an hour to get necessities for her. It's cold in the store... again. The restockers in the store seem to be in an tizzy as they look grumpy and push there carts around without saying a word as they basically mow you over. The kicker is that all of their systems were down so they could only accept cash. NOT one employee told anyone. We went in one line and they cashier says "cash only" ... ok.... I move to the next cashier.. and she says cash only. I basically said loudly is there any cashier that is not cash only?!.... finally one of the customers there said their system is down so that is why they are all cash only. Oh! That would have been nice of the cashiers said that or if there was an announcement over the intercom OR a sign on the door that there system is down. No one said anything! I over heard that same guy who said it has been down for an hour already. Given that no one was communicating that their system was down, everyone trying to check out after us was experience the same situation and my mom and I. The store could run the risk of customer abandoning their carts where perishing items. I overheard a woman telling the security they should at least put a sign on the door... sadly nothing happened. We only purchased a few items cause of the limited cash we had on hand. This is a digital world we live in so who really carried cash on them? read more

If you're in search of unique food finds, Great Wall is your place! First, I will warn you, the smells can be a bit overwhelming. With all the fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and meats mixed together, the market has a strong odor. It doesn't stink, honestly I can't place what it smelled like, but just breath through your mouth and keep it moving. Great Wall is my go to for everything seafood. The snapper and salmon is always fresh and meaty. They will also clean and filet your fish to your liking, which is almost because I do not like to filet my own fish. 2 weeks ago, I bought chicken legs and thighs. The next day when I went to cook them, they had my refrigerator smelling like rotten eggs. Look it up... SALMONELLA. When I took them back for a return, I had horrible customer service. The associate and manager challenged what I was saying and trying to say it couldn't be returned, showing my the sign which says, and quote exactly, "...if there no quality issue". This supermarket is a hidden gem in Catonsville. They have my favorite milk tea big size bottle. They have good price of live lobsters. This supermarket is huge and have mostly everything (not all of the thing I need) but they have lots of veggies I like also. It similar to Hmart which is 8 mins away from this place. read more

Nice to have a Chinese supermarket in this part of Maryland. A lot of different vegetables, fruits, meats, seafood here, as well as packaged/frozen foods. There is a prepared food section and a small area that carries baked goods too. A huge selection and fun to go through. it can get quite crowded here on the weekends and parking can be tough. I could not say the place is especially clean either, but it might be because when I came last it was during a big surge of people. My main reason for going here is they have in the freezer section a self-serve area for meatballs used in Chinese hot pot. None of the other Asian groceries have this kind of set up. We bought a bottle of Chinese hot sauce from GW (Great Wall), in Germantown Maryland. Perhaps we should have inspected the bottle carefully, because the cover was dented, and when we got home, a lot of the contents had spilled out, making a mess in the white cloth bag. Since we do not live close to GW in Germantown, we went to GW in Rockville and asked them if we could exchange it. The lady told us that even though they are the same business (GW), they would not be able to exchange it, and that we would have to drive all the way to Germantown and see if they would take it back. I then called GW in Germantown to ask if we could bring it back there, but the lady who answered the phone was extremely rude, and she just hung up on me, when she heard that I was calling with a complaint! Their customer service is terrible, and we have decided never to go there (i.e. to any Great Wall Supermarket), ever again. They are the worst. read more

It's an interesting place to be sure! It's hard not to compare it to H-Mart. While there is some branching out, it is less pan-Asian and much more focused on Chinese goods. Pros: solid produce section; everything looked very fresh and had decent prices. Most cuts of meat available as well as a sizable fish selection, fresh and frozen. Certain items are definitely cheap like the tofu and a variety of non-perishable staples. Cons: Some items are much more expensive than other places. For example, organic milk was $6.50 for a half gallon; I could get a whole gallon for less than that at most stores. I was excited to see an aisle full of Goya products, but I could get most of them much cheaper at a typical store like Giant or at a specialty Latin market. The cafeteria section was cool, but I was a little daunted by the ordering process (and no one behind the counter really offered to help me, though that may have been due to a language barrier). I'll try again next time. I would come back, but for a specialty item (anyone else want peanut milk ice pops?) or for the incredible produce. read more

I've only been here once. This place was recommended by a Vietnamese friend. He told me that this place serves roasted duck and BBQ pork which is just as good as the kind at Eden Center. (Up to debate.) I couldn't believe it! I used to go to Eden Center all the time but because it's far away, I took a step back and tried to look for another place closer to where I live. I found Ha Ha food market which is on Route 40 but it's close to my work, not my house. I want to bring food home and eat it while watching a movie or playing games, not when I'm at work! Until I was working at my other job in Columbia, my Vietnamese friend informed me about Great Wall Market off Route 40. I decided to go on Tuesday, 18th of November to get some of their duck and pork. As I walked in, the whole place was spacious. It looked clean and very open. Most of their shelves there are short so I could see just about everything. A lot of their fruits and veggies looked fresh but a tad bit too big. The carrots there were like the size of my forearms LOL! Okay not that big but they were noticeably bigger than the usual at Giant or Food Lion. I then looked to my right and saw the meat stand. A whole row of ducks with BBQ pork hanging right under and 1 big ole roasted pig next to it. This is where the magic is. However, as I was walking closer to the counter, I saw a hot bar full of food to the left of the stand and was amazed that there were so many options! What's even greater is that it's only 6 dollars to get a whole meal which consists of rice and 3 entrees in 1 container including soup! I decided to get a pound of BBQ pork and Half a duck. I paid about 20 bucks and sat down to try them out. The duck was so juicy, succulent and oily that it started running down my chin each time I took a bite. I noticed there was a little bit of pink near the bones but the good thing about duck is that you don't have to fully cook it in order to be "safe(r)". It's kinda like beef. The BBQ pork was delicious too. It's kinda like a huge slab of pork belly with BBQ flavor smothered over it. The only con about this is that if you leave it out too long or need to reheat it, the sauce starts to taste like robitussin or nyquil... I then decided to get 3 of their 6 dollar meals. I don't know what the dishes were called because every time I pointed and asked what it was, the woman would only say "pork", "beef", "fish" and other 1 word names or descriptions. But she sure packed the containers up like it was the last meal I'll ever have. Each container must have weighed around 3 pounds! Oh and they give you 3 containers of soup too! But the soup wasn't so great lol. It was hot which was great for the cold day but taste wise, not so much. The 3 meals were freakin cheap and everything I got was delicious. The duck and pork were delicious but were they better than the kind at the Eden Center? That's up to you to find out! :) read more

Of the larger Asian markets in the area (Lotte, H-Mart being the other two) I find GWS to be the best. - Wide aisles - Relatively clean floors - Easy and ample parking - More consistent quality with regard to produce - Sizable selection - Fewer fishy odors The conventional vegetables/fruit are often better quality and less expensive than a typical chain grocery store. The downsides are that organic products are far and few between and many condiments/sauces include ingredients like MSG. As a vegetarian I cannot speak to the quality of meat or seafood. My major gripe is a horrible little section at the end of one of the aisles that sells old veg in a bag for $1.00. Half the time the contents are moldy, rotten or unidentifiable. While I avidly support using as much of a harvest as possible and firmly adhere to a root-to-stalk approach when cooking, sometimes things just belong on a compost heap not sold to the public for a few shekels. I make the trip every month or so and usually return with enough greens, fruit (the occasional durian), buns, noodles, or dried-goods to fill my fridge and larder. Bottom line is if you visit with realistic expectations I think you'll be pleased you took the time. If you go seeking locally grown organic radicchio, pom pom mushrooms or freshly made borscht you're gunna have a bad time. read more

I love shopping at Great Wall Supermarket. The selection of fresh fruits and vegetables is awesome and the prices are very fair. We come here mostly for fresh fruits and vegetables. They were giving out samples of several fruits when we were there this past Sunday. We have tried some of the other foods as well. They have an awesome selection of ramen noodles. Have also tried some of the frozen dumplings and soups from the frozen food section. Everything has been very good. I will agree with what other reviewers wrote about the cashiers at Great Wall. The first shopping trip at Great Wall we were there near closing time and the cashiers didn't want to check us out because it was near closing time. We almost had to leave our cart full of groceries there after spending the time to shop for them because they told us that they already closed all of the registers and they didn't know that we were still in the store. I don't know how that is even possible. They did finally decide to let us check out our order and pay for it. Overall a great place to shop. Pretty typical Chinese grocery store. As soon as you walk in, you see a ton of groceries. The prices are fair and slightly cheaper than Hmart down the road. However, the grocery isn't that fresh. Seems like most of the American fresh produce does not turnover often. However the Chinese selection is good and a great variety of everything. I would give it 4 stars just because there really isn't a better Asian supermarket area. I do really like the BBQ area in the back. There's not a lot of Cantonese style BBQ meats in Baltimore. The prices are expensive compared to what I'm used to. But the meat is really fresh and seems to be cooked daily on the weekend. I've tried to roast pig, duck, and char siu. I love coming here! This is my go-to place for my Chinese groceries and staples. It is also the cleanest and nicest Chinese grocery store that I've ever been to. The vegetables are always fresh and abundant, the seafood selection also has a great variety and is always reasonably priced. Check-out is always quick and efficient, and the weekly sales provide even better deals. Another great aspect is the eatery on the right when you first walk in. They serve box meals (2 meat and 1 veggie for less than $6), as well has roast pig/duck meals (or you can order whole ones!) Call for hours, and they will openly lie to you on the phone, even if you're in the parking lot watching Hispanic, and Asian shoppers walk in...they'll stop you at the door if you're white, or Black.
