Best grocer downtown. Baltimore is sort of my second home, as I visit a lot. This has given me time to hunt down products hard to find at my permanent residence. Reasonably priced, amazing assortment of food, especially considering how tiny the store is. The couple who works and owns this store are very professional, accommodating, and kind. I discovered this gem a few years ago after getting disgusted with the horrible Asian markets in the county. If refreshing seeing welcoming, friendly faces instead of resentful workers that act as if they hate their jobs and the customers (Hmart is The WORST). It's a convenience to special order items, and to try things I've never seen before. Wonderful place to shop! read more

Grocery store itself 2/5 but bumped up the rating a star since it is a Mom and Pop sort of grocery store and I'd like to see them continue to get business. I really wanted to like this place more, but wanted to provide an honest review so that patrons are aware before they come here. There are not very many Asian grocery store options in Baltimore, so I was very excited when this store showed up. Unfortunately, it seems like its located in an unsafe neighborhood and we were glad that the limited hours forced us to go during the day. This is a good convenience store type of place, which has many dried and canned goods. Dried noodles, spices, sauces, etc in its thin aisles. There is a limited frozen/refrigerated section and unfortunately an extremely limited fresh produce section (which is usually what I shop for). Overall, if you're looking for a convenient location for a certain spice or sauce, you may be able to find it here, but if you're looking for a big haul, this may not be the best place to find everything you need. read more

Convenient place to shop if you are closer to downtown rather than driving out to GW, Hmart or Lotte, but check your receipt as they have over charged me questionably a few times (e.g. ring me up for same items later though they already bagged it). You can't see what they charge until after you sign and get your receipt, so it is helpful to count the items you get. While it's true they have some Asian vegetables and products that other local markets like street market might not have, I also value honesty. read more

We were eating lunch across the street when I noticed this Asian/International Grocery Store. We love specialty stores and finding things we can't get at home so we headed straight over after lunch. You could easily spend hours in this store looking everything over. I tried to rush through as I knew our suitcases were smaller than everything I wanted.... sorry noodles :( But we did find quite a few spices that were were lacking, and some Pocky flavors I hadn't seen before, goodbye diet! We also grabbed a few new spoons to add to our collection and browsed the chopsticks. Prices are extremely low and we were pleased. I can't believe that I've lived a couple of blocks from here and had no idea that it existed. I loved the selection! They have a variety of food, and everything is organized and has a price on it. The prices are reasonable too! I spent a good amount of time just wandering around and looking at everything. I found some snacks that I'm really excited to try, such as the taro choco roll. I've only had the pudding flavor so I was excited to find the taro flavor. They also have all the fixings for bubble tea, including the straws. I was also overwhelmed (in a good way) by the selection of ramen. Definitely go here! read more

Potung is a great hole-in-the-wall grocer that will meet all your Asian cuisine needs. I used to have to bum rides to H-Mart to get essential ingredients like oyster sauce, sesame oil, Chinese eggplant, etc. but then Potung entered my life and things have changed for the better! They offer a small selection of fresh produce (I was able to get baby bok choy and snow peas for cheap). However, I think they have a restocking schedule that makes the freshness hit or miss. Also, don't be deceived by the tiny store front. They have a wide selection of sauces (I was surprised to see spicy do ban jiang which I used to bring back from CA) as well as herbal teas, Asian snacks, baked goods, and frozen goods (dumplings, buns, etc.). In addition to Chinese products, they also carry Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Indian goods and much more. Downside: I would always check the expiration dates because the turnover rate for certain items is not very high. Also, I would pass on buying meats here because they are frozen and who knows how long they've been sitting in the freezer. Lastly I bought a string of garlic for $1 here last week and it grew mold within two days. ): The store owners are very friendly though their English may be a bit poor. They accept cards! Terrific Asian grocery store right in the heart of Baltimore that is small but has quite a wide variety of stuff including standard household staples. It's in a seemingly run-down area but don't let that scare you off, there's plenty of cool stuff to be found here. They have a lot of frozen prepared foods and meats but also a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables including bok choy, scallions, Chinese broccoli, fresh ginger, stuff like that. The selection of sauces, condiments, seasonings, spices, snacks, stuff to cook with, etc is quite extensive too. I always stop here to get supplies for making dumplings and have never had any issues finding what I need from frozen wrappers to fresh cabbage to the various sauces. Overall highly recommend, Po Tung is not as extensive as somewhere like H-Mart but you will find basically everything you'd expect to find at an Asian grocery store here. read more

Coming from a Californian town chock full of Asian grocery stores, I was so happy to find an Asian market in Baltimore near my school. The store is kind of small, but there's quite a bit of stuff to choose from and things are inexpensively priced. Overall I'm just really happy to have access to familiar foods again. This is the Asian hook up in the city! It has some of the basic stuff I look for and it's not that big but they take advantage of every space and stock it full. I would rather make the trip to Lotte Market for fresh veggies and frozen foods but this is super convenient for curry paste, rice noodles, dried mushrooms/fungus/bean curd and canned baby corn. I was disappointed that they don't carry dashi to make miso soup but I'll just have to ask them to order some...when I can explain what it is that I want :-) read more

In the city, grocery stores are few and far in between, and the ones that exist sometimes leave you with a feeling that you've getting majorly ripped off, especially if you're not a resident of the city, especially small grocery stores. Potung seems to be an exception to this rule, and is one of the small hidden gems in this city, especially if you're like me and cook at home often. If you do Asian cooking in this city, this place is a lifesaver. The real impressive thing about this store is the fact that they know exactly how to manage this store given the space that they have to do it. The place isn't huge,but manages to cram in a TON of things in here, many of which won't be offered at other grocery stores in the city. Most, if not all of the things are used in Asian cuisine. I'm actually impressed with the eclectic collection of snacks, candy, frozen food, and meat products that they have from all over Asia. It's actually even inspired me to try a lot of the stuff that I've never had before from other Asian countries. The variety of produce that they have isn't huge, but also understandable, given the size of the store. The hours could be better, but they're fair. Just call ahead of time before you head out, because I think sometimes they readjust their hours due to the season. read more

I don't know why I haven't reviewed Potung sooner. I go here after work for groceries at least once a week and have since I moved to Baltimore. I've gone to Streets down on Charles, Eddie's up on Eager, and Lexington Market. Potung is the BEST place to go if you want a thorough selection of fresh vegetables. You won't be able to get more specialty vegetables like fennel or dandelion greens (for those you'd have to go to Harris Teeter or the like), but MANY staple items like onions, potatoes, eggs, milk, bread, etc. etc. are all here. I do have to note that sometimes they don't have milk in stock, but I guess it depends on the day. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Potung gives a 10% student discount on a number of items. In terms of the area Potung is located, as true as it is elsewhere in Baltimore, be vigilant and you should be fine. A lot of the individuals you see hanging around nearby are people who live on that block, so I've never felt particularly sketched out. (Mentioning this because of another review.) read more

Gah! This place is where I go when I can't travel to the bigger Asian marts. Its got more selection than meets the eye. Compact, but not lacking the least. I love that there's a little bit of everything. Just make sure you check the expiration date on your items. I suppose they dont really have an efficient system to monitor them. Meh, happens everywhere else anyway. The only problematic thing about this place is perhaps the location. The shop is placed at a particularly dodgy spot of downtown. On my first trip there, I saw this woman taking a dump on the sidewalk. I keed you not! So practice caution and remember to always pay your parking meter! read more

Potung Trading is a gem in the heart of Mt Vernon. Although considerably out of place considering the neighborhood, this place is no joke. Coming from California, PT is analogous to a mini Ranch 99. I was worried I would be deprived of Chinese food in Baltimore. PT has the essentials that make me feel closer to home - rice, dumplings, bok choy, sauces, ramen, Chinese sausage, tofu, tapioca, steamed buns and more. Wow, talk about variety. I've never seen so much stuff packed into one place in my life. And what's strange is that you don't really feel claustrophobic in here, even though by all means you SHOULD. I stopped in here to get coconut milk and green tea for a recipe. Well, I got that and so much more. If you're into Asian cooking at ALL, you need to be here. They have damned near everything you could possibly need. Staff is very friendly and will explain what things are used for if you have questions about them. My husband was thriled to find something called "haw flakes" - he said he hadn't had them since the 1980s. I didn't even know what they were (but I do now, thanks to him - unfortunately they're not to my taste, I'm afraid). This is like H-Mart crammed into a tiny apartment! And it's so convenient, too - we often simply don't feel like driving all the way to Catonsville to get ingredients that we need, so this fills the bill nicely, as it's only a 5 minute walk from the house. They do have a fresh section but I'm not sure it's that good of a quality so you probably do want to go to H or Lotte for that, but for packaged things you can't beat it. They have probably every variety of green tea ever made! And the sweet things (of which there is a lot of), you'll adore it if you have a sweet tooth. This area is under development, so be careful at night. It's improving, but slowly. Stay alert. 5.00 minimum for credit cards, be aware. read more

I wanted to try my hand at making a Thai curry and the recipe called for a lot of Asian ingredients I've never heard of, so I did a quick Yelp search of Asian grocery stores in the city and came up with Potung Trading. I came after work and was able to snag street parking. However, walking there I did feel a bit unsafe. I wouldn't recommend coming here after dark. I almost walked right past Potung! It's a teeny tiny shop, but they pack this place with tons of stuff. There's about three aisles and a back area with freezer and refrigerated items. There wasn't that many options for fresh veggies, but I don't hold that against them seeing as they are so small. But if you're looking for sauces, noodles, frozen foods, and snacks then this place is for you! I had way too much fun browsing through everything. And I found everything I was looking for (and new things I can't wait to try)! One of the women working there was really helpful and showed me where the items that I couldn't find were hiding. If you're not up for the drive to Great Wall or H-Mart & you're not looking for specific name brands, this is the place to go! It's small, but packed with a plethora of items. Location: Near the Central Enoch Pratt Library. If you're using the Charm City Circulator (purple route), get off near/on W. Mulberry St. and head up that road, past the left side of the library, until you hit Park Ave. Take a left on that road and it'll shortly be on your left side. Parking: Decent amount of metered street parking- depending on when you go. Staff: Friendly, but cautious. They weren't particularly welcoming to my non-asian friends. Selection: Ramen. Lots and lots to pick from! In addition, they have fresh veggies for cheap and a decent snack selection. This is also the place to buy tofu and kimchi! But if you're buying food, make sure you look at the exploration dates! I've had a couple bad experiences with expired items. Overall: As a small store, there aren't bulk sales; however, this is a great, pretty inexpensive convenient location to stock up on items. Pancit noodles, sweet rice, Milagrosa Rice, lumpia wrappers, halo-halo ingredients, Mang Tomas Sauce, big tins of Olive Oil (a gallon for like $22). Baked goods! Hopia, Siopao, Ensaymada, fresh veggies in the back refridgerator section, and great prices! They also have things like bamboo steamers, rice bowls, rice cookers, Chinese New Year items, etc. this place is a treasure. Yes! An Asian grocery store in Baltimore that I can go to instead of driving all the way to Catonsville/Ellicott City! It is a small store, but it most necessary material (ie, sauces, pastes, etc.) for Asian cooking with a small offering of vegetables (ex. sprouts, shiitake mushrooms, tofu, etc.), fruits (pears, bananas, apples), and frozen food that are all cheap. This store is a life saver. Who wants to travel out to the county for things like tofu, vinegar, oils, noodles, etc? This store is more what I am used to than those huge supermarket stores. Middle of downtown Baltimore. Street parking if you can find it. It's not Super H Mart or Great Wall big, but it's a nice small store where you can find the basics, and most of what you need and from an Asian store, and then some. They had a good representation from your various Asian countries - from Vietnamese, Chinese, Indonesia, Philippines et al. There's a good frozen section and even some basic fresh produce in the back. Sadly I didn't get to visit during the weekend, where I hear they have a good baked goods selection brought in from NY. Someone was cooking dinner in a small portable stove in the back corner of the store. It smelled so good I was having trouble concentrating on shopping! The people working there were very friendly, and tried to be as helpful as they could be, after shopping, I went to bring the car around and 2 of them even helped load in all my groceries. If you are unfamiliar in the area and are coming at night I suggest to try parking on the street in front of the store, where it's mostly lit. The side streets are not well lit and can be a bit dodgy at night. read more

They also have odds and ends (like rolling pins and pots) I'm not used to seeing in corner stores. Potung Trading is small Chinese/Asian grocery in what's left of Baltimore's Chinatown. Just the store and a restaurant next door remain. It packs a lot into a small space. They have mostly dry goods although there are a some refrigerator and freezer cases by the front door and in the back. Fresh produce is also limited but excellent quality and price. I'd say 80-90% of the goods are east Asian, but also some Indian, Latin American and N. American. Probably not a place to do all of your shopping but a great place to stock up on Asian goods. If you've been around Baltimore, you know that there isn't a great deal of ethnic diversity in the commercial realm. You might see Italian food, Kosher food, Soul food, Korean food, and other small pockets of various ethnicities. In general, though, it's the good ol' American staple food that reigns in B'Mo. So when you come across a store like Potung, which is in what left of Baltimore's Chinatown, you cherish the gem. Simply put, this is a Chinese grocery store, packed to the top with various sauces, ingredients, supplies, vegetables, frozen goodies, candies, rice .....you name it, they probably got it...as long as its Chinese or similar. What I'm trying to say is, it would be great if they stocked some Korean kimchi and other Asian foodstuffs. I'm not partial to any particular asian food but I'd like to have a one stop shop to go to. I give it four stars because, from what I see, there are very few, if any (i don't know of any), competitors inside the city. You have to go far and away into the suburbs to find alternatives. read more

They are generally very good with the staples, although I once bought some sweet soy sauce (a very large bottle the size of a newborn infant) and it was expired and had turned solid, so I basically dumped it in the trash shute and it made a terrific crash. I wanted my 4.99 back. That soy sauce that could have accented my dumplings with dark splendor continues to haunt me like a lost love. The folks running the joint are pretty nice, esp. the elderly gentleman. Once there was an altercation between a fiery Italian American young man with a temper issue (accessorized with a clingy Asian girlfriend, size zero, and a sing-song voice), and an young African American man who felt that the Italian American was "disrespecting him" with some nefarious side-eye. There was a furious row that resulted in some foodstuffs being knocked down and the girlfriend was weeping and launching herself between the obnoxious testosterone-fueled fools, as was the old gentleman trying to make peace with smiles and conciliatory gestures. I was gawking at the unfolding scene behind the ramen boxes, of course, ready to run to the back in case fist of fury came near my delicate face. Anyhow, the young African American left, probably to acquire some sort of handy weapon, and then the store owners hustled the wild and unstable couple (the white guy was swearing loud oaths about "busting up" the guy's face, and the Asian chick was weeping for mercy and moderation--I kind of wanted to tell her to get a backbone already, but an inner city grocery store is no scene for Romeo and Juliet, so whatever) out the back door. I hung around staring at the Taiwanese cookies and Fillipino canned tunas when the African American fighter sauntered back in, asking slyly "Where that couple at?" and of course, they were long gone back to Charles Village, probably. So all was well that ended well. I am, however, consistently intrigued at the stream of African American men who come in and buy certain pills that are stocked up above the avocado and plum baskets. I asked the owner-lady what they were and she said, "Men's special vitamins." Perhaps it is time to stock some "women's special vitamins" so that the women folk might become vital and lusty as well. read more
