Yikes... the sushi was edible but a bit flat tasting and rubbery. Grocery store sushi is fresher. We won't be eating here again.

I love Asian Cafe. Never had a bad experience. Pretty much the only restaurant at the lake to get vegan food. Several vegan sushi rolls + tofu hibachi! Sometimes they'll do egg-free fried rice for us but sometimes they just make us get white rice. Either way we enjoy it, especially for how cheap it is and good portion sizes. It's a calming environment and has traditional decorations that add to the visual experience. The house soup is one of my favorite things that comes with an entree. When you walk in there's an annoying fabric flap hanging right in your face that you have to move. It was in my way and a pain when I was trying to carry takeout bags. The sushi counter did not look fresh and the counter where you pay was crowded with someone's personal medications and cough syrup. There are enough tables to eat in if you decide to but no one was clearing the dirty ones while I was there. Food: we ordered takeout for 7 and tried a variety of food. Unfortunately, not one person liked their food. The fried rice was the worst rice any of us have ever had. It was horrible. The best food of all of it was the vegetables that came with the chicken and steak combo. We were very disappointed in the taste of the food and cleanliness of the restaurant. I really wish the experience was better but it just wasn't. read more

My son had dumplings and said they were the best dumplings he has ever had. We were seated quickly and the people working there were so nice. The food is good but the service is terrible. This place hasn't bounced back since COVID. They are still doing this weird thing where when you walk in the front door, you suddenly find yourself trapped in a tiny 5' x 5' entryway, with the door to the interior blockaded by a dining table and copious plastic wrap blocking the entryway. However bad this sounds like it must look, let me assure you that it looks even worse. It looks like something from The Walking Dead. Usually you find yourself inside this tiny little postage-stamp-sized area with another patron, who is looking just as surprised as you by your sudden and blustering entry off the street. There's a slit for talking to the restaurant staff, and for passing food through. So then, if you called in your order ahead of time, you are waiting in this tiny room huffing air with one or two other people until one of the restaurant staff approaches the holding cell. They confirm which order you are picking up and then instruct you to wait outside and they will signal you through the window to come back in and pick up your food off the blockade / table when your order is ready. You then dutifully go outside to wait. As you wait, you will notice a pattern. Other people show up to pick up an order, and they are confused by the fact that there is a small line queuing up outside the door. They think they have to wait in line, and then you have to explain to them what in the actual charlie foxtrot is going on so that they know to check in inside. Repeat this process several times as people arrive. Not a great experience. I don't go here anymore just because I don't feel like dealing with their terrible system. Okay so I know the idea of sushi in a small town like fluvanna can be a scary one, BUT my husband and I have had sushi at almost every place in Charlottesville and quite a few places up and down the east coast. We really like the new owners at Asian cafe. They're nice and quick and the sushi... pretty amazing. I've never felt like the fish was anything but fresh and the cooked rolls are pretty great too. My husband and a few close friends really enjoy the hibachi entrees as well. The sauce they use is delicious! Although I can never pass up the sushi, I steal a few bites of theirs You should definitely give them a try if you haven't before. We went when they were doing take out only the last time and they hadn't missed a beat even after being closed. I'm so happy they were able to reopen! read more

My in laws live at the Lake and we have been twice. Both time we have been the place has been packed! The sanitation grade is a high A, the food is good, the service is attentive. It is owned my a local family, not a chain restaurant. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food you receive. My inlays get the habachi with different meats, it is a generous portion, devious. The sushi is good... but a tad high, considering they do not do bogo sushi deals. The only downfall is that when we asked a question about what was in a seafood salad or what a roll was.... there was little explanation and they couldn't exactly tell us. I would like to think they would want to make the effort to help locals understand what they are ordering. read more

My family and I came here one day after church, not knowing what to expect. When we arrived, the service was impeccable. The owners are so friendly. The interior design is very much Japanese. They have hibachi, sushi, traditional Chinese food you'd hear about like General Tso's, cheese wantons, house soup, shrimp, eel, much more delicious food I'll let you discover. Business is really booming here. Ever since that first visit, my family comes here basically once or twice a month now, and are on good terms with the owners and the staff, and they always seat us at "our" table! This is a hibachi grill, but the cooking is not preformed in front of you. Also, this is the closest place to Lake Monticello to get sushi, which is the primary reason for four stars. The group I was with had bought dinner and drinks there and at 9:40, after some had left and we were about to get up and leave, the owner came over and explained that they closed at 9:30 and we had to go. The only game in town for sushi if you live in the Lake Monticello area of Virginia. A small place with very good sushi considering the location. The prices are reasonable and the service good. The proprietors are not the most sociable of folks, but I won't hold that against them. I hate writing negative reviews, but this one is warranted. We ordered takeout for 3, and our food was very dry and bland. The chicken was extremely dry. The sushi also wasn't very good compared to some places in Charlottesville. We were fairly disappointed in the quality of our food, as well as the cost associated with it. Good food, nice waitress but woman who runs the place has a terrible attitude! Waitress made a mistake on our order. When I pointed it out, the waitress said she'd correct it. The female manager/ owner proceeded to yell at her then argue with me that the item delivered was more expensive than the one I ordered so I should just "keep it and pay the difference." When I stated they could take it back and bring me the correct order she was very rude. Later we discovered the waitress in tears. She was being docked the price of BOTH entrees from her pay and was not getting any tips that evening. Ridiculous!! We've eaten there many times and like the food but won't be returning. I originally wanted to give a 4.5 star review and I made a couple of suggestions for improvement. We went back tonight, just 7 days later and the suggestions for cups with handles had already been implemented. I had hibachi rib eye and shrimp. It comes with delicious rice and vegetables and house soup for just $14.95. Food and service was excellent. I would highly recommend and we will go back soon. read more
