    Chicken Yaki Udon
    Katie V.

Ordered take out here on Monday because I was searching for stir -fry udon noodles after coming back from Vegas. I got the chicken yaki udon which wasn't bad but not what I'm used to. Most yaki noodles (Japanese stir-fry) I've had usually add sriracha sauce but this was missing. I wanted vegetable stir-fry also but accidentally got the hunan sauce with mixed vegetable. Again not bad. Not sure I'd be ordering from here again though. Service was prompt & cashier was nice.

    Phad Thai

We tried a new restaurant tonight. Asian House near JCCC. I was excited to see that they were an Asian fusion restaurant serving numerous regions. Crab Rangoon appetizer was hot and fresh. Very tasty. General Tso chicken was ok. Light on flavor, heavy on batter. I ordered Phad Thai chicken. As it was presented I wax immediately hit with a heavy vinegar smell, almost rotten smell. The color was off. Not the usual orangish color that I'm accustomed to. I've sampled Phad Thai at least 15 different restaurants in different city's. This was not Phad Thai. I had a few bites and pushed my plate away. We finished the generals chicken and I took my plate to our server at the counter. I kindly stated that this did not taste good. It smelled and tasted like vinegar. She snapped at me and said Tamarind, it's Tamarind. To her credit, she removed the charge from our ticket without my asking. Pass on Asian House in O. At least pass on Thai offerings. Many better places to eat.

I came to Kansas City for a work trip and my coworkers and I decided to check this place out for dinner. (We came down from Lincoln). The server was friendly and took good care of us and the food was delicious. Honestly the food was cheaper than we thought it would be too! But we had a good time. It was a pretty set up there was a fish tank next to us that I liked. Definitely a good place to go out and eat with friends. Next time I come back to Kansas City I'll be sure to come back again!

    Fried dumplings

Considering one of its unique dish, I rate this restaurant 5 stars. This dish services different types of steamed vegetables, such as carrots, mushrooms, baby corns, onions, bell peppers.. Thus, it is a good source of fibers and nutrients. Rember it is cook by steam, it dies not have oil! Further, it puts its source aside. Thus, I can limit the salt and sugar intake. BUT. I still have a delicious dish for my dinner. For my dinner, I always order its wonton soup. But today I have fired dumplings instead.

    Terrible food

Worst food ever in my whole life!!! Don't go! 1, it's not Chinese food at all, it's not even close to authentic. It tasted awful. 2, after noticing I am Chinese, the waitress attitude suddenly changed to every bad. Maybe they just intended to cook so bad for me. Or the food is just always awful and taste like pure salt or vinegar. 3, it's not cheap but the quality of food is really disgusting. I never wrote reviews, but this one I really can't not leaving a review. Even fast food is better than this shit. Shame on this restaurant!

Restaurants come and go. I watched one disappear from this very spot years ago. In its place is a Lao family sharing a piece of home with Kansas City. From the moment we walked in, the room smelled of fresh herbs, toasted spices, and slow-simmered broths. Before I even opened the menu, I had a feeling I was about to eat well. Mimi welcomed us like old friends. Instead of rattling off the most popular dishes, she asked what we liked, talked about the food she grew up eating, and guided us through the menu with the kind of pride you can't fake. We started with the Moo Ping and Lao sausage, and both set the tone for the rest of the meal. The grilled pork was smoky around the edges with a savory marinade and just enough sweetness to keep you reaching for another skewer. The Lao sausage was unlike anything I'd had before--packed with herbs and spices and served with crisp vegetables, fresh ginger, jalapeños, and a bright dipping sauce that let every bite taste a little different. For our entrées, Mimi recommended the Pad Kua Mee and the Mee Ka Til. On paper they're both noodle dishes. On the table, they're two completely different stories. The Pad Kua Mee leaned on the quiet confidence of perfectly cooked rice noodles kissed by the wok, while the Mee Ka Til wrapped tender beef in a fragrant coconut curry broth layered with herbs, peanuts, and vegetables that changed with every bite. Then came my first taste of mango sticky rice. Sweet, juicy mango, warm emerald-green sticky rice, silky coconut cream, and toasted sesame seeds. I actually caught myself doing a little happy dance at the table. After we finished eating, Mimi pulled up a chair and shared a little of her family's story. One thing she said stayed with me: every dish is tasted before it leaves the kitchen. Not because they're chasing perfection, but because they want every plate to taste the way their family remembers it. That's when the meal made sense. The food wasn't trying to impress me with oversized portions or flashy presentations. It was trying to introduce me to Lao cuisine the way their family knows it--with care, with pride, and with recipes that have earned their place at the table. I came because I wanted to try Lao food. I'll keep coming back because Khop Jai Der reminded me that the best restaurants don't just feed you. They share a piece of themselves, and if you're lucky, you leave with a story worth telling.

I…read morehave been craving it ever since and for my birthday lunch this week I drove across the metro to this Lao restaurant to satisfy my craving. Khop Jai Der is a very small place with tables crowded together that made it difficult to navigate with my current and temporary situation of using crutches. I ordered the Papaya Salad and asked for moderate spice level. What I received looked nothing like my last fantastic salad. Very little sauce, a skimpy amount of papaya, pieces of cabbage that were way too large and a spice level that was way over-board. The female that brought my dish ignored me for the rest of my lunch even though she was sitting at the table next to me talking to her friends. I never got a water refill that I desperately needed and had to get up and maneuver my way to the restroom for napkins after deleting the two at the table because of severe sinus drain. I finally took 70% of my meal to the register and asked for a to-go box. I showed my Hmong co-worker the next day and he agreed that this was not the place to get what I craved. He brought me a homemade bowl of the greatest papaya salad for my lunch today so I finally did find redemption, but it wasn't from KJD. With an almost inedible $20+ lunch, inadequate and dismissive service while my digestive tract was on fire and a claustrophobic environment, I can't find a reason to recommend this place. The biggest let down that I've had in a very long time.

While we didn't have to wait for a table, almost all of them were full when we arrived. Ika is a smaller space in a strip mall off of 119 in Leewood, so there's not a ton of seating but the restaurant went further back than where we sat so there's probably more room than I could see. The kitchen/sushi bar is right up front when you walk in and takes up a good amount of room toward the front but it's aesthetically pleasing. The decor was very nice and everything was clean. They have a big chalk board near the front door, on the wall with their specials. They have quite a few. The menu is very large and our server came over about 5 minutes after we were seated. We ordered some edamame but asked for some more time to look at the menu. When the edamame came out, we placed our order. We decided to both get a side salad with ginger dressing and share two of their special rolls. We got one of the specials off the board, the Hidden Dragon. It was really good and by far my favorite out of the 2 rolls we got. My friend also really liked this roll and thought it was the better of the two. The other roll we got was the Rainbow which is a California roll topped with various types of fish. Neither of us are big fans of salmon so we asked for it to be left off. I didn't really like this roll. I normally love tuna but I prefer it cut a bit thinner and I'm used to it almost having a butter texture where it melts in your mouth. I'm not sure what was going on but all of the tuna had a very strong flavor and yes, I'll say it was fishy. I realize some people like that but I don't. Maybe it was the Hamachi (yellowtail) but it was not for me. I tried 2 pieces and that was enough. My friend liked it better than me but definitely preferred the Hidden Dragon too. I would probably give them a 3.5 if that was an option because the Hidden Dragon roll was very good. The service was efficient and quick. Not overly friendly. They never even acknowledged my friend's bday even though she was opening gifts and we sat a small birthday pop up paper cake card on the table. Not that we expected anything but maybe just a comment about her birthday. Maybe they were too rushed for anything extra. My disappointment in the tuna on the Rainbow roll is my reason for the lower rating. The rolls are $18 each so getting one I really couldn't eat is unfortunate. They also use the crab salad and not just a piece of crab in their rolls. I prefer the latter because I'm not too fond of all the extra mayo from the crab salad. I missed taking pics of our rolls! The Hidden Dragon looked fantastic and the Rainbow looked better than it tasted, lol. My friend still enjoyed her afternoon birthday lunch! I would possibly try them again to explore something else on the menu since there were so many options but I won't go out of my way to return.

Our server was very kind and attentive, but one thing to keep in mind is that the servers earn commission, so they may be more likely to recommend menu items regardless of their personal opinion. For starters, we ordered the Crispy Chicken Egg Rolls. They were okay, but I probably wouldn't order them again. Most of what I tasted was the glass noodles, and the other flavors didn't stand out much. For my entree, I got the Combo Pad Kee Mow with shrimp and beef at a medium spice level. The spice was perfect. The noodles were cooked just right, the beef was tender, the shrimp was fresh and plump, and the vegetables complemented everything well. The sauce tied it all together with a nice touch of sweetness. I would definitely recommend this dish. My friend ordered the Lump Crab Fried Rice and added shrimp. She let me try some, and it was incredible. The flavors were vibrant, fresh, and balanced. The only downside is the price, as the crab adds quite a bit to the cost, but the quality was there and you could tell it was fresh. Overall, Bamboo Penny's delivered a great dining experience. Between the beautiful atmosphere and the quality of the entrees, it's definitely a place I'd return to.
