My barbecue pork noodle dish The broth is in a separate bowl out of the picture

We decided to drop in for some Thai cuisine before our night commenced at a nearby cocktail bar. Pennies is incredibly clean, though the pricing is definitely on the elevated side. I won't attempt to pronounce the exact name, but I ordered a barbecued pork and noodle bowl that came with pork dumplings and a side of broth. Packed with fresh spring onions and baby bok choy, it tasted remarkably fresh and clean. Naturally, I overloaded it with all the incredible spices available--my stomach will definitely be thanking me later! One friend ordered the veggie plate, which led to a few tense, dramatic moments of debating whether the accompanying dumplings were vegetarian or meat. Once we finally got official confirmation that they were vegetarian, our "happy meal" successfully resumed. My other friend went with the chicken fried rice, which looked fantastic. To top it all off, it turned out I actually knew our server from several years ago! Needless to say, we received phenomenal service and were exceptionally well taken care of all night.

Celebrated my wife's birthday in a beautiful large circular booth near the kitchen in back. Started things off with some nice sampler plates at very fair happy hour pricing. Likewise, we enjoyed some creative cocktails from their newly updated spirits menu. Everyone enjoyed the wonderfully presented dishes from all parts of their menu. I found the inspired collection of ingredients in their house specialty pineapple fried rice dish along with just the right blend of oils and spice to be truly unique and unlike anything I've ever enjoyed. Thanks to our gracious server Joy who so thoroughly answered all of our questions and perfectly described not only the dishes but elements of their preparation. A real credit to her craft.

My coworkers and I visited during lunch time and it was quite busy. We had reservations for 6 and were setup in back booth. Our waitress Chanisara was very helpful and patient. Our table ordered a few shared plates: Veggie sampler combo, Lobster Egg Rolls and Som Tum. The lobster rolls were all mine and delightful. Full of lobster, cabbage & scallions rolled up in a crispy wonton. The Som Tum salad was very good as well. My entree was Basil Fried Rice with Shrimp (Medium Heat). The rice was full of bell peppers, sweet onion, basil along with the herbs & spices which provided more than enough flavor to which I did not use any other sauce. My coworkers enjoyed their dishes as well: crispy jumbo garlic shrimp, pineapple fried rice, tofu stir fry and other dishes

Finding a place to park was very difficult, especially since I wasn't familiar with the layout of that shopping area. Maybe it's not as bad when it's not holiday season, right before Thanksgiving. There are almost too many options on the food menu, and the drink menu is very extensive. I'd recommend checking out the food menu online before you go to save some time. The service was great, but because we were a party of 12, the tip at 22% was automatically added, which was OK, but it's better to know that upfront. I had two appetizers and a tropical beverage so it was over $50 total. The Chicken Satay had 3 good-sized flat pieces of chicken, and the crispy Shrimp in a Blanket were wonderfully crispy, but a little too spicy for me. The sauces with both were good. It's a fairly noisy restaurant, but again, maybe that was because it was right before the holidays. The decor has too many conflicting elements going on, some very modern, but then there are a lot of long fake floral things hanging from the ceiling that seemed gaudy and out-of-place. I'd heard lots of good things about Bamboo Penny's, and I'd try it again on a less busy day, but it's probably not going to be on my "favorites" list.

I had been planning to try Bamboo Penny's for at least a year since moving here and finally did this past Friday night. The positive: It's a beautiful atmosphere and the service is great. Our server named Joy was extremely attentive. The restaurant is decorated beautifully and it looks very classy. It was very busy so I know it's popular. The less positive: My lower rating is because I didn't love the food which is very important. The prices are about 25% higher here than many of the other Thai/Asian Fusion places in the area so I'd want the food to be as good if not better. Others in our party got fried rice dishes and liked them so it was a mixed result but all agreed that they would expect to like the food more for the higher cost. Appetizers: The table shared 3 appetizers. Crab Rangoon, Vegetable Tempura, and Spring Rolls. All were $12 each. The spring rolls were good and the best food I tried here. I enjoyed the ground chicken. I'm used to getting shrimp or shrimp and pork so I appreciated the different protein. They were rather small but there were 4 of them cut in halves. 2 different styles of peanut sauce. My favorite spring rolls I have found in the area are larger and cost $7.99. They are shrimp and do not have a chicken option. The plating was very nice. The crab Rangoon was fine. Nothing special about it but cooked well. Again the plating was nice. The vegetable tempura was disappointing. There was one tiny piece of sweet potato and nothing jumped out as tasty. There was some sort of white vegetable that was so flavorless that nobody could figure out what it was. The broccoli were larger pieces that were basically broccoli with a tiny bit of tempura crust. The two large broccoli were most of the dish. There was some sort of mayo based sauce . Definitely not worth $12. Entree: I decided to get the Beef Noodle Soup which they had listed in parentheses as phó. This is not like traditional phó that I normally get. It's definitely beef noodle soup with a heavy base of beef stock/broth. It is extremely oily/greasy and not lite like the phó broth I prefer. I started feeling a bit nauseated after just eating a bit because of the grease from the soup/broth. There was nothing wrong with the soup but I don't eat that much greasy food and I don't feel good when I do. I now know the description of beef noodle soup is a better description than phó. Again, the service was great and they did give me extra basil which I tried to use in the beef noodle soup to give it a more fresh, lite taste. It didn't work and all I could taste was the heavy, oily, beef stock/broth. I also really like to use sriracha in my phó and they only had Thai spices to add. I think Bamboo Penny's is much more Thai focused than any other style of Asian. My Beef Noodle Soup was $21. I normally pay around $12-$15 for phó. The servings are large like at most Asian restaurants these days. All of the plating was very nice. If I go back, I would try a curry since I think Thai is probably a better selection at this restaurant and more in their wheelhouse.

This was a great dining experience! We had a large group of 6 and we were seated right away. The team did a great job of covering our table. We had drinks fast and our food order was in quick too. The meals were delicious! From the appetizer sampler platter to the pho to the chicken pad thai! Everything had the spice level that we ordered and the flavors were bursting! Great service, great food!

Second time eating here- again with a very large group upstairs. We were three separate tables of 8 in a corner. Seemed a long time to get drinks. The three tables ate at very different times. Seemed understaffed. Our dirty appetizer plates sat on the table the whole meal of dinner. And we even had stacked them up for them. We split a lot of appetizers and there were all good! I got the combo pad Thai and it was just ok. For the combo, I chose chicken, tofu, and shrimp. Each was very bland and must have been added at the last second. Also got the steamed Chinese broccoli which was a generous serving. My friends salmon looked good. I'll try that next time.

Perfect place if you want to overpay for Thai food for the vibes, if you know what I mean. I don't see much value in it anymore as other Thai restaurants in the area have better quality food for a better value.

While visiting family in Kansas City, they took me for Thai food at Bamboo Penny's. Beautiful restaurant, excellent service and delicious food. Plus, they had my favorite dessert. Mango and sticky rice!!!

We had such a great experience at Bamboo Penny's in Leawood. From start to finish, everything was fantastic. Our server, Anna, was absolutely incredible--super friendly, attentive, and full of great recommendations. She really helped us narrow down exactly what we were in the mood for, which made the whole experience even better. The atmosphere was stunning, with beautiful attention to detail throughout the space that made it feel warm and elevated at the same time. I ordered the Panang Curry (which is something I rarely find done well), and it was amazing--definitely one of the best versions I've had. Since we couldn't decide on appetizers, Anna suggested the sampler platter, which turned out to be perfect. It came with four of each item, making it ideal for our party of four. Overall, everything exceeded expectations. We're already looking forward to coming back, especially to enjoy the patio when the weather is nice!

One of my favorite Thai places in the metro. Each time I've tried something different and have thoroughly enjoyed not only the food but also the service and atmosphere. The appetizer platters are a great way to try several things and share with the whole table. I personally am a big fan of the egg rolls. Drunken noodles with beef and the salmon dish were both very good. Service was very attentive. Highly recommend this place! It's also in a good location and easily accessible.

This is the first time I've been inside Bamboo Penny's. Before I had eaten on the patio which is great but the inside is super pretty - highly recommended for dates. As usual all the food was amazing. I will definitely come back here again. Also, I'm slightly a nuisance with asking recommendations the staff did not disappoint. They were so good.

Bamboo Penny's is ALWAYS a vibe! The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing. There are two levels. You can take the steps or elevator up to the second floor dining area. This is not my first time at Bamboo and it certainly won't be the last. I have dined in and gotten take out several times. Each time the food and drinks have been awesome. This visit I got the Basil Fried Rice (no meat; medium heat level) and Chicken pan seared dumplings. Usually, when I order the medium heat it tastes like it. This time it tasted mild. However, I asked my waitress for Siracha sauce and she brought out a small plate with pepper flakes, siracha and two clear oils with peppers in them. Definitely kicked the spice level up! My friends ordered the veggie sampler combo, lo mein, basil fried rice with shrimp and penny's Rangoon. Drinks: one had a mocktail and the other had a seasonal strawberry daiquiri. They both enjoyed their food and drinks respectively. 10/10 recommend!

How do we know what's gluten free?

I just let the server know that I was gluten free and she directed me to what was good for me. They do have a gluten free soy sauce that they can use as a sauce base for a lot of their sauces. Most things are made to order.

Do you have any gluten free options?

Absolutely! Our most popular dish, pad thai, is gluten free

Make reservations because they had a two hour wait for walk-ins. For appetizers we shared their burnt ends. Tender and sauced perfectly. For dinner we shared a wedge salad, their mashed potatoes, asparagus (a must!), and their tomahawk steak! Instead of doing three separate steaks we did the one and it was a perfect size for all of us to share! The steak was tender and well seasoned, mashed potatoes creamy, and the asparagus was prepared in a way we hadn't had before - highly recommend! We also had their dessert lemon meringue pie and coconut cream pie! Really really good! Wine options: amazing! Bourbon options: classy! We couldn't give it five stars for two main reason: 1. We made a reservation for 7pm, arrived and check in at 6:50 and still had to wait just over 30 minutes to be seated. We learned that walk-ins had been seated ahead of us so we needed to wait for some tables to leave before we could be seated. This was a bit surprising. We understand waiting a few minutes, but 30 min is not okay. 2. The sweet server assisting us for dinner was in training and we learned from her "trainer" that she wouldn't be getting any of the tips from our dinner. Additionally, the "trainer" came over around 830 to tell us that although it was only three of us that gratuity is automatically included. Very odd that we were told these things during our meal. The server being trained should absolutely get a portion of the tips - we hope restaurant management reconsiders their policy on this especially since we hardly saw her "trainer". We normally tip over the 20% but because the trainer didn't get any of our tips, we opted to not increase the tip that was automatically charged to us. All in all really classy restaurant and food was delicious! We'll be back for sure!

The space was nice and clean, but unfortunately, the service and the "famous" main course didn't quite deliver a stellar performance. Our table was split--some wanted dinner, some wanted dessert. This apparently threw our waiter into a state of deep existential confusion. The Food: I ordered their "famous" fried chicken, customizing it to three thighs (which came with homemade pickles and a fantastic ham gravy). For $24, it wasn't bad, but it's definitely not "famous" for flavor--maybe just famous for the price tag. Honestly, I could have filled up at Popeyes for a fraction of the cost. Surprisingly, the absolute star of my meal was the side of sautéed mushrooms. It came with little pearl onions, shallots, and green peas. I topped it with some of my friend's arugula to make it fancy, and it was delicious. The Service (or lack thereof): Here's where it went downhill. The dessert order became a saga. Those who ordered sweets expected them to arrive with the mains, but we had to ask several times just to get them toward the end of the meal. By the end, our waiter seemed completely frustrated with our existence. He aggressively boxed up the remaining desserts and semi-forcefully shoved the credit card machine into our faces to shuffle us out the door. Great mushrooms, aggressive math at the end. Proceed with caution.
