Tried this downtown Asian restaurant and it absolutely delivered. We ordered chicken fried rice and crab rangoon, and the rangoon was some of the best we've had recently -- crispy, flavorful, and generously filled. The fried rice was also delicious and a great portion size. One thing that really stood out was the amount of seating. There's plenty of space whether you're dining solo, as a couple, or with a larger group. Great food, comfortable atmosphere, and definitely worth checking out. We'll be back! read more

This very nice little Asian eatery is located in the library district and it's such a beautiful indoor space with exposed brick and tall ceilings. They've done an excellent job keeping the old aesthetic while making it still look fresh and new. The restaurant was so cool but oddly not one other patron in the space. My partners second visit and her second time with a fairly empty restaurant. I guess what I'm trying to say is it's an excellent space but possibly more of a to go spot despite the beautiful restaurant space. The menu is fairly trim but has flavors of east Asia and south eastern Asia. So pho, Chinese and I believe they had some Thai. The food was very good, our egg roll was perfectly crispy and my entree Mongolian beef was delicious. Lots and lots of veggies which is a great surprise for Chinese dishes. I came to Asian Cafe to have lunch with a friend. We both had pho for our main - beef for me and chicken for them. We also split an order of the crab rangoon which were crunchy and golden on the outside but very creamy on the inside. We didn't realize until we were leaving that there were lunch specials (not advertised on their menu) but I would like to come back and try one of their combos. read more

This place took over the old Red Dragon so it definitely gave me memories coming here. I feel like this might be a place that not a lot of people know about but they definitely should. They serve Vietnamese and Chinese food but I stuck with the Vietnamese food this time around. I ordered the bo luc lac or Vietnamese shaking beef. This is the only place in town that I know that serves this dish so I had to get it. The beef was tender and flavorful and went well with all the veggies except the cucumber which had an extremely unpleasant bitter taste. Other than that the dish was great. If you are a fan of pho, this is the restaurant for you. We had the Phi Tai and it was best pho I've had in a long time. The meat was tender, not chewy like a lot of places. The ingredients were clearly fresh. The jasmine tea is actually made from tea leaves. Service was fantastic and the ambiance is great - exposed brick and lots of natural light. I was really impressed with this Chinese takeout! The crab rangoons were absolutely delicious and quite huge. The portion of the orange chicken was also generous and came with a lot of rice too. They have Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai options on the menu, so there's a lot to choose from. There's stiff competition in the area for Thai and Vietnamese food, but speaking for the Chinese takeout, this is a much needed addition to the neighborhood! Their 8th Street location is convenient to River Market and the Garment District and Quality Hill. They don't have great signage, so it's a bit difficult to find. The entrance to the restaurant is up a small flight of stairs and through a couple doors. 8th Street is a quieter part of downtown, but street parking could be a challenge. read more

Came here because we were craving some vietnamese food late, this place close until 9pm and it was worth it. Parking can be hard to find if you can't find a street parking, but other than that, we went at a time when it wasn't busy. They took over the Red Dragon that used to be here. It was a different layout, more bright and open space and inviting. We ordered some crab rangoons, rice vermicelli combination bowls, and beef stir fry. The reasons we deducted the star, because we had cucumbers that tasted very very bitter and old. It was so hard to eat with the yummy dishes we had. Their crab rangoons were so good. We tried to ordered wings but they sold out of it. It seems like this is a mom and pop place, very nice staff too. read more

After having the best pho of my life a few weeks ago, it's hard to give Asian Cafe anything higher than 3 stars. Although my young male server was efficient and professional and it's always wonderful to eat in repurposed century old garment district building; the food was about as generic as their name. My beef pho had no pizzazz or hearty flavor, just the basics and a small amount of un-flavorful slices of beef. If I was making this at home, I'd be satisfied, but when I'm spending $26 - with tax and tip - for this and a Vietnamese coffee, I really expect something a bit more memorable and above average. If I lived in the neighborhood...sure, but I probably won't venture back to sample the rest of the menu when i know there are much better options elsewhere for what I was served today. read more

My gf and I finally had time to walk over for a bite and we were so pleased with the experience! The crab rangoon was so crispy and creamy that I had two, and I never eat crab rangoon. The phō was delicious, you could taste the mint and salt in equal parts. Our service was great. The server was attentive and our hostess was really kind when I mispronounced my order. Just opened in the old Red Dragon House location in downtown Kansas City. (No relationship, but the owner, Joseph, did work for the old RDH owners as a chef long ago) Soft opening this week, so I expect things may change in the next few weeks or months. I always start with Kung Bao (Kung Pao, Chicken with peanuts, etc.) at new Chinese-based restaurants and the offering here did not disappoint. Portion was good, plenty of chicken prepared well, good balance of vegetables vs meat. Gravy/sauce was basic, surprisingly not spicy at all (no peppers present) but still good, though not great. Rice was stickier than most basic offerings in a good way, and while the rice portion was smaller than most, I was offered more if desired. There's no lunch menu yet, so be prepared for an entree price. There are some Vietnamese offerings I plan to try in the future (Pho, Bun and others). Atmosphere is very clean and remodeled. Bathrooms on the same level and inside the restaurant itself. So far so good, and I plan to go back ... probably too much! read more

Accommodating, fast, KIND, DELICIOUS. Come eat here if you want genuinely great food. The place is clean, great environment. It's wonderful. My mom's a flight attendant and needed to be at the airport asap but we were starving. Stopped here. Not kidding you he had us eating within 18 minutes of arriving and told us he'll pack up our meals for us to go so we can rush to the airport. Genuinely the best food we've ever had. Came here on a date Thursday night & when we walked in it smelled AMAZING!! Loved the concept of having Chinese, Thai & Vietnamese options on the menu. The waitress however.... horrible. BUT in her defense she should have been the hostess/ cashier until she knew her menu better. Instead the owner / manager sat at a corner table on phone checked out until someone was ready to pay tab. We sat down, got menus & 1 min later (not exaggerating) and ever 1-2 min after she kept coming back asking us if we are ready to order. We let her know that we would flag her down once we are ready because we had to look over the menu. It was our first time in. While we're looking over the menus in order of salad /spring rolls came out and we did not order. And the three of us looked at each other confused until the owner came over and told her that it was the wrong table. When we were ready to order, I asked if the eggrolls came vegetarian or if there was chicken in them or pork as egg roll filling varies from restaurant to restaurant. I told her I could not eat pork or beef and she told me that they were vegetable. So I ordered those and my date ordered shrimp rolls as our appetizers. We did begin inquiring about items on the entree menu. We asked what was in the pad Thai and she said noodles and meat. I asked if there were any vegetables such as beans, sprouts, green onions, and potentially peanuts since that is typically what is in a pad Thai, we got a blank stare and asked if the owner could come over so we could ask him. He came over and let us know that. Yes there was bean sprouts green onions, carrots, and peanuts on top. Great he ordered that combination beef, shrimp, chicken & I ordered a combination Bun bowl with only chicken and shrimp. Appetizers come out I take one bite and can immediately smell taste the pork and had to spit it out as I will become terribly ill if I eat it, I also excuse myself to the bathroom so that I could rinse out my mouth of any remanence of the pork as I did not wanna begin throwing up on my date. I come back out outside of the table. He has flagged the waitress over and brought it to her attention that there was in fact meat in these eggrolls, we gotten oops my bad and she took them away. She came back with our meals, his pad Thai was perfect the way he ordered it. My bowl was sitting in front of me and she said oh you you didn't want chicken right you & wanted pork added to it? I looked at her with a blank stare like this can't really be happening why are you even a waitress and proceeded to let her know actually I ordered chicken and shrimp only I've told you three times throughout this meal I cannot eat beef or pork and you continue to bring me items with beef and or pork. She picked up the bowl and proceeded to the kitchen, where we heard her blame the issue on me instead of taking accountability which really got under my skin & being a gentleman he refused to start his eating his meal Until mine had arrived. When the correct entree came out is was 6/10 the chicken was over cooked / dry, small, flat pieces but the shrimp were good. I ended up only eating about half of it. Luckily my date was not ruined by this disaster lol but my poor date kept apologizing over and over for the meal mishaps. I just moved to the downtown area and I was really wanting to like this place because it is within walking distance of my place but because of the service and issues that happened I doubt I will ever return. read more

Great service and good lunch specials, even on Saturday. Chicken was perfect, but the orange chicken didn't have any spice (which some people may like). Ambiance needs some help. Recently went with a large group of friends. Ordered a variety of starters - crab Rangoon, egg rolls, and spring rolls. All tasty. All the entrees came out in large portions and quite tasty. A variety of sauces are at the table to help elevate the meal. For a Friday night, they weren't that busy. I hope traffic picks up for them. It was remarkably quiet, some soft music in the background would go a long way. You pay at the counter, seems a bit silly when you aren't that busy. read more

5 Stars for the new Asian Cafe! Service was excellent with food being served quickly and hot just like we like it. The location is downtown off Broadway and 8th Street where the old Red Dragon Chinese Restaurant used to be. The decor is simple and very clean with the large windows providing plenty of light and view to the street. With the falling snow today it was beautiful! We had appetizers first - Crab Rangoon, steamed dumplings and shrimp spring rolls. I must say their Crab Rangoon is AMAZING! The dumplings and spring rolls were also some of the best - we ate them faster than we took pictures of them! I had the Kung Bao triple delight and my wife had the chicken pho. We both tried each other's dishes and were very happy with our choices for lunch. The Pho broth had so much flavor and we love to spice it up which we did. The KB3D had the most tender beef and chicken! The shrimp were large and NOT over cooked! Both dishes served hot, quickly and with pride by the owners! We highly recommend The Asian Cafe if you like both Vietnamese and Chinese food! You can have BOTH! Prices are fair and for the quality of the food and portions sizes it is a great value! read more

I want to love this place because it's so close to my loft and the staff are all so nice. Unfortunately, the food isn't good. It's bland and flavorless. The first time we had the sweet and sour chicken it was drowning in sauce and had no veggies at all. Tonight we tried again, we had the sweet and sour chicken with sauce on the side. The chicken was ok except it was covered with slices of raw onion. We tried the kung pao too. It was a total fail. Tender chicken but zero flavor. Kung pao is traditionally a spicy dish so we asked for medium spice/heat. It had zero spice. The entire dish was unlike any kung pao we've ever had. Usually it's diced veggies and chicken in a spicy semi thick brown sauce. This sauce was a pale liquid "sauce" with no flavor at all. The portions are large but it doesn't matter when you don't like the food. So sad it's this bad. read more

Great Vietnamese Phos and more. They also have a good selection of traditional Chinese dishes. Have eaten there three times since the opening. On our first visit I ordered the beef and meatball pho which was very tasty with a well flavored broth. On the second I ordered the cashew shrimp off the Chinese side of the menu and it was flavorful with lots well cooked shrimp and vegetables. On the third I ordered the seafood rice noodle soup and it was also very good. We will be back at least 2 or three times a month and hope this great new addition to the downtown restaurant scene does well. read more

This place is open 7 days/week! 11a-8p. the food is great. spring rolls are like the ones at old Saigon 39. excellent peanut sauce. Chicken pho is fabulous. The broth is delicious. I live in the neighborhood and will order ALOT. Food is ready in 10 minutes, gentleman behind the counter is friendly and nice. I'm so happy they are in that old Red Dragon spot! read more
