I love this place! I use to hate going to chinese/japanese/asian food places because they were always dirty and the staff was rude, but at Asian Star, it is incredibly clean, and the majority of the staff is so polite and attentive! The only gripe is that the hostess is a little rude and clueless; she acts like she is so busy (everytime we've been there she says "wait to be seated" and stands by the wall in the middle. When we asked her about the special (get entree, app or dessert free for 2yr anniversary) she said "I dont know anything about that. Ask your waiter when you get a table". It's like, "Huh? You work here but have to clue about the special you have signs for outside?" Aside from that, our waiters have been amazing. We always get dumplings as appetizers (Shrimp dumplings are my absolute favorite!) and the sweet and sour chicken is delicious. My husband tries everything once, and the only things he hasnt liked were duck dishes lol Definitely recommend this place for adults. I personally dont like dining out around kids but I'm sure it'll be fine for them too if they're civil. read more

I'm updating on different foods eaten from Asian Star. I love their hot and sour soup and I always make sure I order it when I have food delivered. Their Pho Ga is very good as well. My mother has been eating their veggie lo mein and just loves it. I usually end up eating her left overs and I have to admit, it's very good. Their General Tso's chicken is wonderfully spicy and delicious. I'm not a huge sushi fan but I did try their eel sushi and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted also I didn't know sushi could be hot as well. Granted this is traditional American Chinese food, so people complaining it's not authentic shouldn't be a factor in deciding whether or not to eat at this, or any other American Chinese restaurant. read more

I heard great things about Asian Star, so we gave it a try. The menu selection is huge, just about anything you would want in the Asian genre. Seating and service was very slow, but we are trying to be understanding about the labor shortages in the restaurant industry. But there is no excuse for cold food. Hot and Sour soup is always a staple item whenever we visit Asian restaurants. It is often an indicator of how good the food is overall. But this soup was only room temperature. I couldn't get the attention of the server, so I took it up to the counter to get it heated. When they finally returned it, it was only slightly better. Hot and Sour soup is very difficult to heat. It takes a lot of time, and it has to be stirred often to avoid uneven heating. Somebody in the kitchen did not understand this problem. We decided to just ask for a to-go container so we could take it home. On top of that, it was rather bland. Hot and Sour soup is supposed to represent the spicy, robust character of Asian food. It took about 15 minutes to be waited on but I thought hey no big deal. So I ordered a seafood medley with rice. It took35 minutes to get to my table which is outlandishly long for Asian food. Then our waiter never stopped to refresh drinks or ask if we needed anything, but he continuously helped the table full of winter visitors next to us. Just rude. My favorite sushi in Yuma to go or to eat in! The inside of Asian Star is beautifully decorated with nice accent lighting throughout. They have a wide variety of dishes that my coworkers always enjoyed (with large portions), but I went there for sushi! I loved each roll I tried, especially their local specialty rolls. The current special of buy one roll, get another of the same roll free, after 4pm) is a GREAT value. I also love their miso soup and crunchy noodles to go with it. DELICIOUS!!! Asian Star is going downhill -they're cutting corners in quality, ethics & customer servcie. Best to go to Lin's Grand Buffet (all you can eat Asian Buffet/Mongolian BBQ/Sush, Salads, Desserts)i on Pacific Ave... just a few $'s more and you get variety, great customer service & fresh food. Asian Star's staff (& Manager) have a complacent & rude attitude. Our waiter spoke little English & kept mis-understanding what we were saying (or pretended he didn't understand us) - we tried to ask him questions to clarify food items & he just nodded his head (up/down; left/right) said uh-huh & rushed our ordering. Our Egg Drop 'soup' had the consistancy of 'SNOT' (really!!) as if the eggs had not been cooked and/or they used a Gooey thickener. We returned it for Miso which was good but salty. The 'Spring Rolls' were actually fried Egg Rolls- we tried to ask if the side sauce was Pad Thai sauce (which normally accompanies Spring Rolls) but the waiter said Plum Sauce & said a side of Pad Thai sauce would be $2.00 but they "did not have enough Pad Thai sauce" (we did not think that applied to the Pad Thai plate). The Pad Thai plate arrived and was a bright PINK color & was 'twangy' with a vinegar taste - it did NOT look like the menu photo & did not have traditional Pad Thai Peanut Sauce. Here on Yelp, another customer's pic of his Pad Thai place was the true Pad Thai sauce so we know our dish was made wrong. I asked our waiter "is it PINK becaue they ran out of Pad Thai sauce?" and he nodded yes then quickly left. When we paid, I showed the Manager our PINK Pad Thai (we could not eat most of it) and said that the Waiter said (AFTER we asked why it was Pink) it was PINK because they ran out of Pad Thai sauce and we also compared it against the Pad Thai pic on menu... she was 'snarky' and commented, 'it's been like this for 3 years since we've been open'!. I did not even mention the Egg Drop Soup gloppy, congealed mess because her rude comment surprised me. Obviously Asian Star's staff and management are content with lying, not being polite/respectful to customers and serving CRAPPY food now and we can see this eatery closing as word starts to get out. I read the previous reviews and this place sounded good. The service was good and we were seated quickly. The four of us ordered sweet and sour pork, chop suey, coconut chicken and moo shu pork. Only the latter did not disappoint . The sweet and sour pork had little pork and was in a tempura-like batter! the chop suey was insipid, little flavor. The coconut chicken was unlike any I ever had, overly sweet and had unroasted shredded coconut on it. There was nothing inspiring in the entire meal and seasoning was pretty much absent. I will not go here again and would not recommend it to anyone who likes real Asian cooking. BTW, my wife is Chinese and was unkinder in her comments. read more

Ok, not high hopes with the look from the strip mall parking lot, but hey, we are up for anything. Outdoor patio with metal chairs and tables. But then, INSIDE, fairly nice booths, tables, and nice sushi bar. Somewhat surprising from the outside look of it. The food was really good. We are picky and used to superb Chinese food. They have white pepper on the table...Thank God. So many places out here have just cheap black pepper on the tables. The waitstaff was nice but a little confused...lack of English skills, I think. We tried a few standards to see how they fared with the usual stuff. Egg rolls....not bad...not great... Steamed dumplings....pretty good overall. good dumpling sauce. BBQ pork...I liked it...my husband less so. Chicken with black bean sauce...excellent...sauced well, chicken tender and plentiful, good selection of vegetables. Mongolian beef....really superb and what I expect from a "big city" Chinese restaurant....excellent flavor and cooked to perfection. Pork fried rice....again...superb, flavorful, well done in all ways. The waitress couldn't seem to understand that we wanted white rice as well as the fried rice and we never were able to get it. We had the fried bananas as dessert....good...there was plenty and loads of whipped cream but definitely just good and not excellent. I have favorites elsewhere in Chicago, Columbus, and Phoenix that are several stars better on the fried bananas but that was just one dessert and the rest of the meal was very good overall. They have an extensive menu with Japanese, Thai, Korean, and classic sushi as well but we were in the mood for Chinese. We will try the rest on our next visit. Pretty servicable pan-asian food, even without the "for Yuma" caveat that a lot of reviewers seem to add. Been here twice and think the cooked Chinese and Japanese dishes are solid. I'm surprised that some reviewers found the food bland, as I found it quite flavorful. Not the best I've ever had, but certainly better than a lot of strip mall chinese places, at least better than other places I've tried in Yuma. Sushi rolls have decent taste and texture. I did not like the nigiri, however. Very small slices and tasted a little fishy. Service is attentive and helpful. The decor is somewhat contemporary, or at the very lease more modern than most places you'll find in Yuma. Would definitely go again though I find the raw sushi a little suspect. read more

This is the best place to feed your asian food craving in Yuma...mixture of Chinese and Japanese food. Combo tempura platter was bomb. When you add salmon sashimi and jalapeno tempura stuffed with salmon all washed down by their chilled Ozeki saki...this makes for a good way to end an exhausting day at work. Let's be honest, Arizona is NOT a hot bed of Asian cuisine. This perspective comes from a NYC native that has had some of the best. I am on a constant search to find dishes that take me home and oddly enough the best place I have found in the state lies in Yuma of all places. Unique dishes, flavorful and authentic. I suggest trying the walnut shrimp if you are adventurous and the sizzling lamb for a quality meal. The fried rice is legit and the chicken lettuce wraps while sounding dull are killer! This place is absolutely THE BEST! We loved the Crab Rangoon, the Pork Fried Rice and the Pad Thai we ordered on our first visit and so we ordered it again for take-out! This restaurant offers both tables and booths, and is extremely CLEAN. The tables and booths are set with PINK CLOTH NAPKINS and the wait staff is the friendliest in Yuma! Prices are more than reasonable and the sushi, (given as a bonus with our take-out), was the best around. Having frequented the two "buffet style" Asian restaurants on our last visit and finding them to both be sub-par, this place was a glorious find. Just left this place with a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe because I ordered the pad Thai. I also got fried rice and Mongolian beef. The Mongolian beef was not bad and fried rice was not really fried. A little pepper n soy and the rice was doable. Their pad Thai had shrimp and chicken so I was pumped. Walking distance from hotel. Service was good. Seated right away and and food came out pretty fast. Immediately I noticed the pad Thai looked "white". Like it was just heated noodles and no tamarind or fish sauce in it. I took a bite and it tasted like nothing. The egg came out in huge chunks like an omelette. Shrimp in the pad Thai was cooked perfect. I ate all my beef and rice and drank another beer to see if the pad Thai maybe would taste better. Like an average girl after another beer becomes great. Well it was like I was drinking non alcoholic beer. Pad Thai still bad. Waiter came by and I told him of my issue. 95% of it still on the plate (minus the shrimp). He apologized and brought me my bill. Pad Thai still on it. No corrections or a manager to come talk to me. I do a lot of traveling and this was the worst pad Thai I've ever had. Try a shrimp dish. Ordered the chicken lo mien. Started with the egg drop soup which was good. The lo mien came but was unedible as the garlic was overpowering. I eat a great deal of Asian food and like garlic but this was ridiculous. Now the reason for the 4 rating. The server saw the plate pushed away with the dish untouched and asked if everything was okay. I explained the situation to him and he quickly rectified it with a plate of general's chicken which was excellent. The manager also came over to apologize and make sure the issue was addressed. I was just going to pay for it and leave and try another dish next time but the problem was very well handled and ensures I will be back. read more
