Aspen Athletic Clubs is a pretty cool place. It is relatively small (compare it to say an Xsport or LA Fitness), but it has everything I need, including an area where I can do deadlifting without anyone frowning at me, as they have a good section dedicated to powerlifts and crossfit. This gym has a decent amount of cardio machines, along with several squat racks (three of em) and a couple of pulley machines. For bench pressing, there's no conventional bench presses, rather, they have racks, where you can place barbell holders at and move over a bench so you have an impromptu bench press. They also have a decent amount of dumbbells. I really liked the crossfit area as they got racks to perform them silly kip pullups along with medicine balls and Olympic plates. They also have a decent padded section where you can do stretches. BATHROOM REVIEW: This is more about the locker room. Pretty decent, with no naked old men walking around air-drying their nether regions. That's great in my book. Sit or squat? Squat.... it's still a locker room :-P read more

I have been a member since it opened its doors, I find the staff there to be very friendly and I am always welcomed by name most times when I walk in. It's a atmosphere that welcomes all levels of fitness types from serious body builders to the treadmill book readers. Since no place is perfect though, I would like to say it would be nice if some new equipment were being cycled in soon, it keeps the vibe higher if customers see improvement and change for the better since isnt that the whole reason most people go to the gym is to improve and change for the better.... read more

I signed a 6 month contract with 2 other family members but never used it due to pain and injury. I recently found out that I have a chronic condition that makes me prone to injury, so my doctor advised I workout with supervision of a therapist. I tried to cancel my membership 7 months after signing but they claim I signed 12 months. Then why did you tell me my commitment could end in May? It shouldn't matter anyway because I'm suffering from a medical condition. Have some understanding. They claimed they would pause payment until I figured out how payment would continue between the other 2 members, but here I am continuing to pay full price. I'm so done with this place and I just want out. They offered to allow me to pay out the rest of my months for a discount. You think I have spare cash with a chronic condition? TL;DR easy to sign up but don't trust them when you cancel. Clearly there are far more reputable companies out there. We requested to terminate our month to month membership with them due to COVID safety concerns. At the time my wife signed the paperwork to end things and was told that it was good for the both of us. However they continued to charge me and when contacted refused to issue a refund. We have now involved the BBB and our credit card as a chargeback as that appears the only way to get proper resolution. To be fair their facilities are nice enough but like the hotel california, you can check out any time you like, just you can never leave! read more

My family and I worked out at Aspen Athletic Clubs while in Ankeny visiting family and had a great experience. The staff was friendly and helpful. The patrons of the gym were very polite and take care to wipe down equipment after using. The equipment itself was clean, new, and had great variety. They have multiple squat racks, plenty of kettle bells and med balls, a climbing rope, powerlifting area, and more. I like the gym but it always seems way busier due to the lack of equipment. They have cheap monthly rates which is an upside.

Ya know I've been a member for a long time, love the place. Only complaint is the dumbbells weights don't go very high. Wouldn't be mad if they got some that went up to 120 or more . Other than that love the place. read more

I have worked out here a few times as a guest on my wife's membership, which I appreciate. I also like that at the time I work out it is not overly busy. However, I have noticed that although the members routinely wipe down their equipment after they use it, the staff/trainers never wipe down any of their equipment after they or people they are training use it. After inquiring I now realize it is apparently not the policy of this facility to require their staff to wipe down equipment after they use it even though there are spray bottles and towels everywhere. Yuck! The word is out, time for a staff policy change before you start loosing membership to places across the street or down the road! read more

So disappointed in this place. Rude staff who argue with you and tell you you're wrong. I signed up for my membership a few years ago, and loved coming in to workout.The ankeny store staff are a little snooty, but I had the membership to go to any of the locations. So I would go to the one closer to my new home on SE14th. Super nice people there. I moved to South Dakota a few months ago and couldn't use my membership anymore. I decided to call and terminate my membership sadly. I had to call the ankeny store since that's where I applied. I was told I had to physically come in and cancel or send in proof of residency. I was told I could freeze my account for 3 months, I asked to do so. I got charged the second month into the freeze while waiting for documents on proof of residency. I called to get my account terminated once again with proof, and asked for the charge to be refunded. I'm states away, I think it would be not a problem. Oh no. They actually argued with me and told me I was wrong. That he remembered talking to me specifically and that his notes said I only wanted one month. Who does that? Who argues with a customer over $40? Seriously. Just go somewhere else with people who actually care about you the customer instead of the money. Ridiculous. Will never ever come back read more
