I was very clear from the start that I have Medicaid, and I was told my out-of-pocket cost wouldn't exceed $200. I paid that bill -- and then suddenly received another bill saying I now owe $850. When I called to ask what happened, the only explanation I got was "maybe the doctor was out of network." That is something they should have verified and communicated before providing treatment, not after sending surprise bills. This feels careless and unprofessional. Patients shouldn't be blindsided by charges because the office didn't check basic insurance information. I would not recommend Aspen Dental to anyone who needs clear, honest communication about costs. read more

Quoting extra fees for fluoride treatments that are not included or covered by insurance.And quoting fees before they even knew what my insurance is. Trying to charge extra out of pocket an upselling from the front desk before you're even seen. And then breaking my jaw bone during an extraction and not scheduling appointments for fillings. Within 4 or 5 months so that a tooth will then knead a crown or root. Canal or an extraction at that point, including extra cost. When all it needed was a filling, but taking Walk ins for new patients and forcing my appointment to be delayed almost forty five fifty minutes.That i've waited a month for for a new patient that's never been seen before, because it's quick money. read more

i didn't have to wait long and everyone was pretty friendly. When I spoke with the dentist she gave me her recommendations and I told her I was unable to do everything at once, I needed to work on my bottom teeth first. When I spoke with the AP lady she gave me a print out showing how much my part would be to have everything done that the doctor recommended...$8000! I tried explaining I couldn't do everything right now but, she told me my only choice was to have ALL of the recommended work done. They would NOT do what I went to the appointment for. I was told that the fees for my visit that day would be waived. However a couple of months later I received a bill saying that I was late on my payment. I tried calling the office during business hours and no one ever answered the phone. I then talked to the billing department at corporate and explained my problem. I was told that they would contact the office, (still well within business hours) but when they tried no one answered the phone. I was a former employee at Aspen dental. Before I left my account was at zero dollars about a month after I left. I received a bill for $498. Today I received another bill nearing $800. This place deserves 0 stars. Doctors who sit in the office and mess around playing computer games instead of helping clients. They took over 4,000 from my grandmother, told her they'd do implants and then after pulling her teeth turned around and said they can't that costs close to 10,000 more. She has documentation of the original procedure and costs and the work they claimed they'd do for her. She's speaking to a lawyer, and will be taking further steps against Aspen Dental. The dentist is one rude man. He treated me like I was an idiot. I went there for a 2nd opinion. Got nothing what I wanted the estimate I got from them was twice as high as the first one and much of the work my first dentist said was not needed. If I could give them negative 20 starts I would! One star is probably a lot to rate them. I went today after They scheduled me for an appointment a week later from the call. I came 15 mins early as recommended. I waited outside in the lobby for about 50 mins before I get in. They called my name and they wanted to take some x-Ray first. The one who took them was so dirty and she smells so bad and her shirt had some spots of food (so unprofessional). After that she took me to a room where take they do all the dental work. She told me that the hygienist will come check my gums in couple mins. The couple mins turned to 1.5 hours I swear! I can hear her talking loudly with her co workers. Their conversation is so ghetto. When she came, she start checking my gums and then took the info and she told me that the dentist will be right with me in one min. I swear to god that the one min turned to 2 more hours! I was extremely mad! I even stayed on my iPhone until the battery dyed. I have never waited that long in a dental office like that. I only came for examination because I had a toothache and I wanted to know what's wrong with it. So after 2 hours finally the dentist came! He is black Incase if u ever wanted to recognize him. When he walked in, I swear he didn't even say hi to me and went right the way on the Computer to check my x-rays, after 20 minutes from checking that he finally talk to me and asked me what's The reason I came, so I told him I have a toothache! And he told me that I need to go see a surgeon because my tooth can't be done there! after all the wait he is telling me that ! Wtf is wrong with them. The dentist was so rude and it looks like he doesn't like his job. He also was sweaty and disgusting. He talks so unprofessionally like he's in the hood! I swear I never been treated this bad! I came without insurance, willing to pay out off pocket too. After that the manger called me and didn't even discuss any prices or anything with me. All he did is that he gave me the phone number of the surgeon to call and that's it. He tried to shake my hand and I refused and left. They wasted my day and left me with pain and unhappy. The next day I called Great Lakes Dental Care due to the high satisfaction of reviews I seen on google and scheduled an appointment the very next day! And I'm super satisfied with them! We took Ronald, a vulnerable 63 year old adult to Aspen dental for permanent dentures. He needed extractions and we were told he'd start out with dentures that day. They had previously taken molds of his mouth so they would be ready. The dentures they gave us were far too large for his mouth and Ronald could not wear them. We took him back and were told to force him to wear them. They simply would not fit in his mouth. After several weeks of this a dentist finally said the dentures were too big and we started over. We were told they'd be ready in approximately two weeks. When they called us for an appointment, we thought it was for the correct sized dentures. Nope, we were told to bring an additional $988 because Ronald needed bone shaving for dentures to fit. An oral surgeon was there to take care of this surgery but he said after examining Ronald that he did not need any additional work done on his mouth. They still had no dentures for Ronald and told us they would be ready in two weeks. They would call us when they were in. Never received the call. We did receive a letter implying we were negligent in not making an appointment. I called and they told me Ronald still needed surgery on his mouth. I reminded them of the surgeon. They told me again,two weeks for his dentures. 4 weeks later and over six months since his extractions and still no teeth, we asked for a refund. We were required to pay nearly $7000 dollars at his first appointment which would cover the extractions and dentures. Ronald is developmentally disabled and has schizophrenia. All of this was explained to Aspen at his first appointment. We made an appointment for the refund. They left us in the waiting room for over an hour. We had to leave and reschedule another appointment. At that appointment we asked for a refund for everything but the cost of the extractions which was $1050. They told us we would only get just over $2000 back. We said no. They caused Ronald trauma which hospitalized him for several days. With his condition, he could no longer eat what he likes, he was embarrassed by his appearance and afraid to go in public. We still have received nothing from Aspen except for a $90 bill they are adding on for us coming in to ask for a refund. Do not take vulnerable adults to Aspen. They are liars and frauds. read more

Did not treat my son with kindness or respect, even after I explained in advance that he had anxiety disorder. He went alone for the first time. He waited 45 min in the waiting room, then they said since they were running so late, they had to rush so they didnt answer his questions or tell him what they were doing. Then, they told him he had to pay out of pocket, though he is on my insurance plan, which I told them when I scheduled. Instead of asking to call me, he panicked and cried, and put it on his emergency card which went over limit and we were charged $50 fee. Instead of offering to call me, they took the distraught teens money. Then, he drove home in a panicked state. So, they dont care a bit about anyones life. Just money. Driven by money. They made this teen afraid to see a dentist now. Good job people...just what the industry wants. read more

We all know it is difficult finding a new physician or doctor and you definitely don't want to be looking when feeling ill. I am leery of corporate "chain" medical care precisely because of the payment focus that greets you here at Aspen Dental, but the excellent care one receives in the back room more than makes up for the money focus atmosphere up-front. Payments are expected in person at the time of your appointment which frankly I am not use to with my particular type of insurance. However, costs are extremely fair for the quality of care one receives here. I have had three teeth cleanings, x-rays, a crown, and filling here. All of the medical staff are friendly yet professional. My dentist explained in detail everything she was doing during the procedures. Very competent and have requested to always be assigned her when I need dental work. Bring your iPod and headphones...the sound from the TVs don't exactly drown out the drilling noises. The automatic telephone and email appointment reminders are handy unless you are like me and find them annoying because my calendar events already send me a text message reminding me of my appointment...but they are useful if you don't have a calender synced with your phone. And oh, Aspen Dental offers a free initial exam and x-rays so there is no reason to not check them out. UPDATE: It has been two months & Aspen Dental is still unable to communicate with my insurance company correctly to finalize the claim. While care here is excellent, their office management sucks. read more

Don't ever go to an Aspen Dental. Their dentists don't know how to do anything and neither does their office managers. After moving to Kentwood, I had to have an emergency wisdom tooth removed because it has been hurting but the regular dentist in the clinic won't do it. I made an appointment in Nov. only to find out that the oral surgeon only comes once a month. So I had to wait until mid Dec. Before I made the appointment I asked my OBGYN if i needed a note due to me being 34 weeks pregnant. She said no because I was using topical anesthetics. They made me waited for another 2 weeks just to tell me that they would need a note just to be safe. While they told me that they would call the OBGYN's office for the doctor's note, I made another appointment in early Jan only to find out that they never kept the x-rays while I was there the first time. They never called my OB's office for that note. I had to wait until early Feb to get my tooth extracted. In the end I had to switch to another dentist in town that was able to see me and extract my tooth on the same day! I was in and out within 15 mins! The other dentist even told me it was a real easy extraction. So, Aspen Dental is garbage. They are unprofessional. All they know how to do is ask you for your payments but don't follow through. They waste your time and money and let you suffer while they do nothing. read more

Firstly, let me state that this review in no way whatsoever reflects on Dr. Miller! Dr. Miller has been FANTASTIC. This review pertains solely to the periodontist at this Aspen Dental location. I've had many dentists over the last few decades and none have left such a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended) as this one. She waits until you're all drugged up, swollen, and unable to talk to stick you with an expensive electric toothbrush and offers you a rebate to which she never gives you the correct paperwork for (so you're screwed there). Secondly, BEFORE she drugs you (so while you still COULD talk), she never even mentions the expensive $150 electric toothbrush, the $30 toothpaste, and the $30 rinse she's going to stick you with at the end. She gives you a printed estimate that you have to agree to and sign upfront, which only states general vague "supplies". But every dentist gives out a free toothbrush, floss, and maybe a small tube of toothpaste, so I thought okay, no big deal, and figured this periodontist just makes you pay for them, maybe. But nowhere in the contract (or in verbal agreement with her) does it tell you that it will be an expensive electric toothbrush (that no one even asked you if you already have), and $60 of toothpaste & mouthwash! The toothpaste and mouthwash I can even understand, as they may be part of your periodontal after-care. But a $150 electric toothbrush? Really?!? It's just a way for them to make money with the respective maker of the toothbrush brand, as I'm sure she has a quota of brushes she has to push onto people to get her commission. Otherwise, why not be upfront about it and disclose this PRIOR to service? All in all, I won't be returning to this or any other Aspen Dental location for the mere fact that I don't like the underhanded way their periodontist pushes products onto you without being honest and upfront about it (and waiting for you to be swollen and drugged up and unable to talk or refuse). If they had been honest and told me upfront about what I would be leaving with, I would have been glad to accept both the after-care products as well as future services. But the way they have to go about "sneaking" stuff into your bill just doesn't sit right with me. What a seedy and shady way to do business. read more

I have had a lot of work done and all I can say is the business is driven by money. I was pushed use their CareCredit financing which I found out later their sales team pushes it to make more money. I was told I have periodontal disease which is correct but instead of referring me to a professional I was told to get antibiotics injected into my mouth. 2 procedures and 5800 later they said a third time with the same procedure may yield better results because my gums were being stubborn. I decided to go to Dr Gregory Weaver who did not take my insurance and he referred me to Dr Jeff Smith immediately rather than waste my time like Aspen did. Dr Smith gave me antibiotics for two weeks and did a root scaling for a total of 370 including two visits, I paid 30 for Weaver's visit and then I paid 10 bucks for the drugs and my mouth has never looked or felt better. Aspen is driven by money and not focused on the patient and you are dealing with inexperienced people. While friendly I can honestly say no person who considers the self a professional would ever work here unless money is what drives them. What bothers me most is that they had the balls to ask me to shell out 2200 for the same procedure a third time when it wasn't working when they could have easily offered me an easier, must cheaper solution. read more

They told me that I have gum disease, but changed their minds after I complained and told them that I was seeking a second opinion with my last dentist, Wilson and Wilson in Rockford. Without a doubt and at this time (08/05/2014), Aspen Dental on 3320 Alpine Ave. Grand Rapids, wants to attract clients lacking dental insurance by offering free dental exams and x-rays. Of course, uninsured patients may have also been less likely to pay for regular dental appointments. Therefore, Aspen Dental might have the strategy of gaining more money, in the long run, by treating financially vulnerable or low income patients with dental issues. This was enough to make me skeptical but willing to give Aspen a try. However, in my case, Aspen Dental actually lied about the condition of my gums. I have to believe they were trying to do this to get more money out of me because, as soon as I complained, Aspen Dental revised their verbal analysis of my "gum disease" to recommend in their written paperwork that I only needed a basic and affordable dental cleaning with absolutely no mention of gum disease. I secured a copy of my free x-rays and will try to get a dental cleaning elsewhere, just not from Dr. John O'Donald's offices in Greenville, because they recently told my husband that he had gum disease which a second opinion proved false. I'm afraid the list of reputable dentists is shrinking in a growing landscape of greed and corruption. read more

Went with my husband for some dental work and quotes and being in the medical field myself, It was appalling to say the least! The dentist spoke to the hygienist only and then literally turned his back to us and never spoke a word to us. He stood with his back to us and filled out paperwork as we were ushered back to the waiting room to speak with the office manager. When we spoke to the office manager, she was unable to answer any medical questions we had about the dental work we were being quoted for, she literally read off the paperwork but any questions we had, we were told, "that would be up to the dentist." Not a good business approach to have some office manager quote you for 5,000 dollars worth of dental work, but unable to answer any questions beyond what's on the paper in front of her and the dentist who can answer those questions not even willing to say hello to his patient! I was looking for an oral surgeon to work on my adult daughter's wisdom teeth and for a good dental office to handle myself and my wife and other six kids living at home. My daughter and I showed up early for her appointment so she could fill out the paperwork. We ended up sitting in the waiting room for 30 minutes after her appointment was scheduled before they took her in for X-rays. The waiting room was filled with frustrated people wondering why their appointments were not being kept. Some were being told that sometimes oral surgery takes longer than expected, but that would not explain why it would take an additional 30 minutes to take X-rays. I can imagine what would happen if we had shown up 30 minutes late for the appointment. My daughter was then told that it would cost $1300 after insurance to have her wisdom teeth done. I had already advised her that if they can't keep an appointment for simple X-rays, the actual extractions would take forever. The attitude of the office staff was that it was standard practice to keep people waiting like this. She went to a different dental office that had her in and out in 20 minutes and will charge her $200 after insurance. Aspen Dental appears to be too busy to handle the customers they have. I was upfront about feeling apprehensive about dentist offices, Some of the staff respected that but some of the female staff were very contentious from the start and my defensiveness to this behavior, which was probably a normal reaction of any patient in any kind of medical office only seemed to heighten the situation. After I pad hundreds of dollars for a procedure up front some of staff knew they had all the power at that point and as a result became very obnoxious in a passive agressive manner which created resentment on my part, confusion in the minds of other patients in the office, and mild amusement to the rest of the aspen staff. The interpersonal dynamics and expectations were way out line for why a person was in the office in the first place. There are some really needy staff in that office with issues and it really gets in the way of what they are trying to accomplish professionally and its not fair to me as a patient to have to have this kind of experience. read more
