Started with Aspen Dental doing a credit check, which was supposed to be a soft pull...It was not, it was a hard pull that drove my credit score down. They purmt my payment on a City Bank Syncrony card with a very high interest rate. The entire amount was put on a card with a 20+ percent interest charge. I transfered that total to a card with a much lower rate. My upper dentures were being modified to accommodate my mouth structure. The pallet had to be continually recovered to prevent gag-reflux. Finally got to the point when a tech there told me that an upper denture would never work properly. I demamanded an review with the Dr. and the office manager. They decided to reimburse me a percentage of my cost, which was, again, paid in full. I since went elsewhere and now have teeth that work perfectly well, but I still have a monthly payment of thousands left that I still have to pay for the work Aspen Dental couldn't complete. I get upset every month when I make that payment, and equally upset that it was a tech, not the dentist that finally told me that my procedure would never work properly. The first time I went to them for a sore tooth, they told me not to worry about it. I had to call back and request a referral to an endodontist. Then when I had the tooth pulled, they told me it would be $168 for a bone graft and didn't show me anything saying that the real cost was over $800. When I called, they said the treatment plan would have explained that, but they never showed me a treatment plan that had that information on it. So, they lie. This dentist is awful. I paid over $1000 for a crown that fell off 2 months later. When it was reattached by another dentist I found out there is a gap causing it to not hold. I contacted them over 10x with no response. Finally being told the regional would contact me and still nothing. I asked for regional info and was told they dont have it but will give a message over. i have been to the valpo office four times. i was told by my regular dentist to have some spots in my mouth checked by an oral surgeon. i scheduled an appoint with aspen dental in valpo. first visit i was seen by dentist that looked in my mouth and said to come back when the surgeon was in the office which is once a month. so i came back about three weeks later the oral surgeon looked in my mouth and said come back next month and will see if it changed and do a biopsy. came back a month later sat in an extremely over booked waiting room for 2 hours. surgeon looked in my mouth and said no change come back in a month. today i went in for my appointment at 8am. filled out some paperwork a couple minutes later they called me back. surgeon looked in my mouth and said i'll numb it and take a small snip and send it off. he left the room. i sat in the chair for an hour. the dental assistant came in and said are you numb yet i said he didn't do anything it's been an hour. i could hear the surgeon talking to other patients and taking care of them before me. the assistant came in again and i asked when do you open? she said 8 am. so i was the first appointment and said yes i asked is the patients he is seeing now after me she said yes. i said ive been here an hour and a half. she said sh knows and told the surgeon several times i was waiting. finally he came in and said are we ready to do this? well duh. less than 5 minutes i was numbed, stitched and scheduled for a follow up. the assistant was great the. the surgeon needs to talked to. after my follow i will not be going back. read more

I've had no issue with the work done on my teeth. The office, the scheduling, and the billing though - those services have been awful. On one occasion my bill for a cleaning was VERY high and when asked why I was told that an electric toothbrush was part of the bill. I had not been asked if I wanted to purchase one, had not said yes, and had not been given one. For simple services such as cleanings, fillings, and x-rays I have repeatedly found that the amount they say I will owe is different than the bill. I end up receiving a later bill (after the consultation and explanation of charges and after paying a certain amount up front) for charges that they claim were not covered by insurance. The billing team is either scamming people, or is not able to properly estimate charges - either way - this is unacceptable service. I have had them misestimate ALL of my services for the past year. One or two incidents on complicated procedures is one thing - but there should not be so much confusion on simple services such as cleanings and fillings. I also have an issue with being told I need x-rays at every visit. One, I don't feel there to be a need (I've never had this at any other dentist I've ever been to). Two, this often is not covered by insurance - yet they didn't tell me that. It appears to me they are trying to up the total cost (hoping you won't ask questions) to make more money. I would not have any work done here without asking before any service what it is going to cost, and if it is covered by insurance. This is for Valparaiso Office. Two dentists were great, one was having an off-personality day. Real problem? The hygienist did an exam, and informed me I had gum disease that could be treated. I went to my old dentist, who was out of town on vacation? Paid for a gum exam from him. He couldn't find anything that the young, possibly inexperienced Hygienist found. Avoided paying for the possible hundreds in work I would need. The dentists were fine, but the hygienist was WAY off base. I never went back. If your experience is different, I'm happy for you. Please for the love of God do not go here. Save yourself from losing your sanity and find somewhere else. Do not spend any of your time with them, they will just waste it. After making an appointment to get my wisdom teeth out, I showed up only to be told they couldn't do the surgery because someone forgot to send my cardiologist a note asking for clearance because I have a heart condition. This was frustrating enough because I had requested off work and cleared my weekend to recover. Regretfully, I made a second appointment which had to be a month later because the surgeon is only there once a month. I called the office several times throughout that month to confirm that they had all the papers they needed and everything was good to go. They assured me each time saying that they had everything they needed. You wouldn't believe it, but I requested off and cleared my schedule a second time only to be told AGAIN that they were still waiting on more papers from my doctors. I sat in the waiting room for over THREE HOURS while they contacted my doctors. Once my doctors sent over the papers, the surgeon took a look at them and said he didn't feel comfortable performing the surgery due to the heart condition I have, and that I would need to go somewhere else that has the equipment that would be safe for me. It is not the surgeon's fault, he should be able to depend on his staff to get these papers taken care of and shown to him PRIOR TO EVEN SCHEDULING THE SURGERY. He referred us to a different place that could do the surgery which is great, but why this wasn't figured out before I was able to schedule TWO SEPARATE surgery appointments I am absolutely upset and angry about. The staff was kind but the place is unbelievably awfully and horribly managed. The manager does not care about the patients at all. They wasted months of my time and lied to me several times. Please do not give this facility any of your money. I regret trying to go here. I would give negative stars if I could. It's a big deal to me because it is relatively urgent for me to get these wisdom teeth out, and now I have to go through this entire process again with a new place. I am also going back to school in a few weeks so now I will have to miss school to get this done. This place screwed me over so badly. It's a giant money grab and I will not be returning since they charged my insurance 1800.00 for a teeth cleaning and also made my husband pay 500 out of pocket. They said my husband needed a deep cleaning when he was only a .5 out of 7. I went to a different dentists office and my teeth were worse and I didn't need a deep cleaning. The day I show up for my appointment, they told me they only had 1 hygienist and someone else confirmed the double booked appointment before me. They waited until I showed up to basically tell me that I had no appointment though I confirmed. Mind you it was a 7 am appointment and I did a lot of adjustments to my schedule to be there on time. Update October 2021 Had them removed in 2014. I can only wear them a few hours at a time before my gums start hurting. Nothing came from my complaints. There is a page on Facebook called Stop aspen Dental and I'm finding out I'm not alone. It's across the the country on their practices and their care. Becareful if you go their. August 2014 If you notice I gave 1 star, I didn't want to give Any stars, I can't give even 1. Worst experience of my life!! Still going on! Broke all my teeth in a fall so they had to be removed on May 30th. I still have no bottoms that fit. The pain is indescribable. I'm still in pain!! It was not cheap $7000 and it had to be paid in full by the time I had them removed. I had my reserves and wanted to cancel but because It was already paid for did it any way. It would have costed more if I used an oral surgeon. I opted to have a "loopy" pill because I couldn't afford the surgeon. And he gave the shots in the mouth....I had been told by them that he's so good most people can't even feel them...BS During the procedure I stopped him telling him I could feel it, he FLICKED my lip and asked if I could feel it and I couldn't so he preceded. Finally the "nurse" noticed that I was crying and let him know so he fave me 3 more shots which did not work but by that time whatever he gave me had me so doped up that I just took it. It kept me drugged up for 3 days...but I also still had the pain! I was given no antibiotics just pain pills. When I went back on a Friday I told them I thought I had an infection because I was still needing pain meds and they weren't working. They made me feel like I was asking for drugs like a addict! I was so upset that I walked out had my husband go back with me. By then the infection was so bad it was going around the eye socket and was no longer isolated to one area. He had to redo it all by cleaning out the gums and THEN fave me antibiotics. By Sunday I had pneumonia. The bottoms never fit, they were to wide. They don't listen when you tell them where it hurts to have them trimmed down. He finally made new ones (that he said he would be making but I found out someone else makes them). The bite was off by at least an inch. So they were fixing the bottoms again and I was going in to get them placed. When I went in to get the new ones placed......the assistant brought out only the top in and put them in my mouth.....they were someone else's and she argued with me until I asked where the new bottoms were!!! She lied and said they were in 2 separate baskets but the tops she brought out all of a sudden fit!! Told her were they needed to be trimmed and she said to wear them to see if I could get use to them. That week I got ecoli. I have no proof that I got the pneumonia or the ecoli from them but it's odd that I literally got it a day after I was there! The top gums are hurting again. I had another appointment and it's the 2 in a row that I've only seen assistants. This last one over a week ago she said it was a sore....I gave to make another appointment but this time I'm telling them I want my money back so I can go somewhere else along with giving them my lawyers name. SCAM ALERT! I have an Oral-B Braun toothbrush. It's my 3rd electric toothbrush. I have a Water Flosser. I use mouthwash. I floss. I have all of my original teeth. I get my teeth cleaned and inspected every six months and have for 30 years. I called up. Asked for an appointment to get a check up and cleaning. When I arrived they bring you in and do 2 "WHIZ BANG" fully electronic, ultra high tech, x-rays. Then they bring in a hygenist. Then they tell you how bad your teeth are. Then they actually sit you down with a financial planner! YES! They want to help you financially manage their ridiculous charges and expectations! I DIDN'T: Get my teeth cleaned. They wouldn't do it. Have to make ANOTHER appointment! Grrrrrrrrrrr! Or take their high cost recommendations. Make a follow up appointment. I DID: Go home and make appointment with a credible dental professional. My dental insurance kicked in and I was finally able to get an appointment with all this Covid nonsense. I was pretty clear about just wanting my teeth cleaned. After a few xrays and seeing a few techs and the dentist im told I need a deep cleaning. 700 dollars with the insurance. I'm like fine but for now I just need my teeth cleaned and I can make arrangements. The response was 'we can't do that because they already made a diagnosis" Next ignoring that I just said I'm not getting deep cleaning done, they send me to their credit dept, To talk about the cost and how I plan to pay for the deep cleaning. Again, now I'm getting frustrated. I explained we've been on a lock down. I decided to go with this dentist office to have a wisdom tooth extracted. Their outside oral surgeon only comes in one day a month, luckily my job was flexible enough to give me that specific day off. The appointments are always on Fridays which is nice because then you have the weekend to recover. While waiting for my "turn" another guy went in and was able to leave within 25 minutes. That was surprising because they told me it would take anywhere from 45 mins to an hour. They also had me in and out of there within 25 minutes. I don't remember even leaving or the ride home. I didn't appreciate being pushed out of there still partly unconscious. After talking to friends about when they got their teeth taken out, they were given anywhere from 20-30 minutes to hang out there until they come to. That is what I expected and don't think is too much to ask for just being put completely under. It was clear they just wanted people in and out.. they took my money and ran so it seems. I couldn't even schedule my appointment without paying it in full. It would have been nice for flexibility in that regard, but I understand why it needs to be paid ahead of time. As reviewed by "Deliverance B" my mother also asked questions while waiting for me and was made to feel stupid. I don't think we'll be dealing with Aspen Dental again unfortunately. What a scam. They recommended a treatment with my cleanings which of course was not covered by my dental insurance. I did a little research on it and reviewed dental journals which basically stated there was little to support it was helpful. I asked not to have it on my next treatment. They always charge you your expenses for their add on treatments before you ever go in to see someone, provide no invoice just ask you to hand them your card before they do anything. Next they always say you're due for x-rays even if you were in 2 months before which I refuse knowing my insurance is only going to cover it annually and I personally don't care to be radiated more often than need to be. I went for my cleaning, they didn't charge me for the irrigation ahead of time but for a fluoride treatment which I pre-paid. I had my teeth cleaned and no irrigation and then they billed me for it later. I asked to have the billing manager call me. The following day a hygienist calls me back and says the other hygienist had done the treatment and I had signed a contract for my treatment plan when I initially met with them. I explained I would have paid and stopped going there if they were going to charge me for services not received. I also inquired if I received the treatment why they hadn't pre-billed me like they normally did before I ever saw anyone. I have left messages and no one will call me back. I will pay the bill because they will send you to collection before they will give you a call back. Worst place I have been in my life. I'm glad they never did any serious work for me. read more

This place is NOTHING like the commercials you see for it on tv. I am a student at Valparaiso University, and I chipped my tooth and wanted it looked at right away, so I made an appointment. The dentist -- don't even know his name because he didn't introduce himself -- took xrays and said the chip was no big deal, but I had a cavity that needed to be filled. I was uncomfortable, so I decided to wait and have my family dentist take care of it when I went home for summer break. First, my dentist did not blow off the chipped tooth, but explained that I was grinding my teeth and needed to wear a mouth guard at night. (He told me to get one from the drugstore and see if it helped before spending money on a custom-made guard; I say that so you know he wasn't just trying to get money out of me.) Then he wanted me to get my x-rays from Aspen so that he could make sure there was no decay in the teeth next to the one needing to be filled. He said it usually took just a day or two for x-rays to be emailed (longer if they had to be snail-mailed), so I made an appointment to have the work done the following week. I called Aspen and was told I needed to come in a sign a form to release the x-rays; when I explained I couldn't come back to Valpo right now (I live in Illinois), I was told that the form could not be emailed, but it could be faxed. Fortunately, my dad has an old fax in his office, so I thought we were good. But then I was advised that once they got the forms it would take at least one to two weeks for them to be "released from corporate." I'm just going to pay the $25 to have my own dentist x-ray the area he needs to see; this Aspen operation is lame and unhelpful and kind of behind-the-times technologically. I was told the wet blood I found on a waiting room chair was strawberry jam. HA, at 55 no one could convince me that strawberry jam and blood looked close enough to bother with that lie! When I got into the exam room, there was the most common dirt issue I find regarding medical profession locations. From Hospital to the newest offices, anything waist down doesn't get the same care as what can be reached from waist to the highest reach of the one doing the cleaning. It is as if they don't think we look or worse that no one wants to say anything negative in case it might interfere with the care they might receive from whomever owns the office. Trust me, you will feel better if you tell the office manager. My policy is, if I don't tell and someone else gets hurt by my lack of contribution, I am just as guilty as the person doing the cleaning. For this office, the last straw for me was when I asked how long they had been at this location and the reply was "years", I then asked, "When did you get these chairs?" the reply floored me, she said, "when we moved in". I then pointed out the twine that held a swing arm which was put in place for shipping of the chair. Not only was the base of the chair filthy but the twine being left in place was coated in cobwebs. The dental assistant proclaimed surprise and horror at the condition, then it became apparent (with my directions) to the assistant that the whole office had the same problem. I then got up, walked unannounced to the office manager and told her that there was a big difference between claiming a lie and just not caring. I gave her my assessment and went out the front door, not a tooth touched because I didn't trust them. Before leaving, the office manager got snarky with me, even though I gave her the courtesy of confronting her quietly and out of earshot of the waiting room. If you have a weak immune system or care about how clean the people are who can help you contract blood born diseases, don't go to this office! Also, they insist on x-rays regardless if you had them done the prior week! I won't suggest any medical care to friends or family if I find questionable sanitary conditions or if the office has you meet with a Nurse Practitioner every time you go there! Nothing against nurses, I love most nurses but with the cost of specialist or dental care, you should be seen and cared for by the primary provider at the location. BEWARE! I went the Aspen Dental in Merrillville today and was disappointed. They are very EXPENSIVE. They tell you that you need dental work done that I've never had issues with before. I go to the dentist every 6 months, so there is no way I could need all that stuff done. They are clearly trying to make quotas at the cost of patients. I was highly upset when they told me I needed a special cleaning because 2 teeth measured a "4" at the gums. That's such BS. I was a little hesitant to go with the mixture of reviews but it was one of the only 2 places that accepted my dental insurance. Had to wait for a little while as I was squeezed in due to sudden tooth pain and a new client. Receptionist is a little over worked handling billing, phones, and check ins but is friendly despite this. Doctor was quick but very nice. Costs and various options were explained in detail by a very friendly office mananger before I agreed to anything. My procedure is scheduled for tomorrow and they were very acccomadating to get it done quickly so I would be pain free despite my limited availabilty as a business owner myself. Overall very satisfied with my experience so far. I think the negative reviews are people expecting to get everything for free. The new client exam and xrays are free but then the cleaning and anything else is additional. It seems people have trouble with dentures here as well and I don't have any experience with these. I am getting my tooth extracted after a failed root canal from someone else and will be getting a bridge so will post an update in a few months once a I get the bridge. read more

I had a traumatizing event happen last night at 10 o'clock in the PM I lost a crown on my top left eye tooth for your canine tooth whatever you want to refer to it as and I went in to Aspen Dental at 8:45 this morning I made my appointment last night online they got me in right away it was a very pleasant experience from the girls in the front desk & techs and then the two very Dapper dentist that came in and took about literally 45 minutes to fix my issue and I'm happy and out the door. I have a wedding tomorrow I highly recommend Aspen Dental and it did not cost an arm a leg it was very reasonable!!!! Thank you!! read more

Issues during my visit: 1. The x-ray tech hurt my mouth while taking x-rays, then scolded my for not having my tongue in the right position. 2. I was encouraged to get a $70 ViziLite oral cancer screening, with the implication that I'm at high risk for oral cancer and that this screening would dramatically improve the chances of early detection. I've researched the procedure online, and various sources (including the ADA) say that there's no evidence it's any more effective at detecting oral cancer than the standard visual screening. 3. The dentist spent fewer than five minutes examining my mouth before announcing that I needed $700 worth of work done - fillings, gingivitis cleaning, etc. I guess it's possible that he could figure this out in such a short time, but I'm skeptical. 4. Dentist also scraped some plaque and debris from between my teeth and then left it in my mouth. He didn't rinse my mouth or ask if I wanted to rinse at the sink. 5. I was asked to make a $200 down payment before having any work done, even before having my teeth cleaned. I have never been to a dentist who asked for payment up front. Also, I was told that I would have to pay $500 out of pocket for the future work. I came back the next day to cancel my future appointment, get the down payment refunded, and pick up my x-rays. I have extreme anxiety of going to a dentist. Aspen made it 100% worse. They are terrible. Terrible customer service, so expensive, and one time I showed up for an appt waited 15 mins for them to call me up to the counter to tell me the dentist wasn't even in so they needed to cancel my appt.
