I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Their billing is a scam. Not only did they fail to apply my payment of $1700 to my bill they also never submitted it to insurance as promised. When I called to complain, I was told the bill was correct. I requested a bill reflecting those things and was emailed something that could not be opened. With the exception of the office manager in Arnold, who tried to get me to open a high interest credit card "the payment plan", the rest of the staff was wonderful and if it was not a ripoff, I would have returned for their care. read more

Incompetent administrative staff, dentist and over all team. My dad went to get his teeth removed here due to a infection he got and he had to get dentures. The temporary dentures they gave him were better then the ones they supposedly customized for his mouth. So far he has gone back three times within the last year or so to get them fixed because they break with food such as a soft crab Rangoon or soft shell taco. Talk about horrible work. This last time that I tried to get him in to get his teeth fixed for the third time the staff would not schedule him right away. They told me they'd call me in a couple hours to get back to me about setting up a time. This was Monday. Never called me. I called two days later on Wednesday and NO ONE would pick up. They would pick up and I could hear the office in the background and then they would transfer me to their voice mail. I called around 12:30pm. I left a voicemail thinking they must be busy or on lunch so I waited it out and NOTHING. That went on all day until 4:30 pm when I decided to block my number and hit the new patient button instead of the returning patient one and got an answer right away. Being from a bilingual household I'm usually the one handling my families scheduling because sometimes they won't understand my parents accents. It's really frustrating how horrible they treated us there so finally my husband whose a Doctor got fed up with how they were being towards us and he stepped in for my dad. He knows more than anyone how any medical facility should run and was disgusted by how unprofessional they were. While they were there my dad was frustrated and was standing up for himself meanwhile the dentist instead of listening he automatically just wanted to dismiss my dad and not treat him any longer. Dentist went on to also blame my dad for biting too hard. Sir, how does one bite too hard into a soft shell taco that is softer than life and where you there to make such a claim. Little did he know my dad wanted nothing to do with them anymore. So my husband was like listen "I'm a physician and as a physician we are supposed to listen to the patient when their unhappy like this not just automatically dismiss them and blame them for something we don't know more of", He went on to tell the dentist on how frustrating it was just to get the appointment in the first place and how dentures should not be breaking with soft food. Finally my husband was able to get my dad his money back and dental records for him so that he can hopefully find a more professional dentist/office. My advice is if you want a attentive and a empathetic dentist/staff who will take care of your teeth/appointments , DO NOT GO HERE. DO YOUR RESEARCH ONLINE. It seems like we are just a number more in their pocket and that's it at Aspen Dental. Anything to do with teeth should be a comfortable, stress free, courteous and a professional feeling when dealing with what you would already think are "educated professionals that are working on your teeth." It was after my appointment was scheduled that my roommate told me her horror story with Aspen Dental. I decided to give it a go anyway.... it didn't turn out horrible for me, it just was nowhere near the kind of dentist experience I guess I'm used to. My insurance company website gave me a list of doctor names so I thought I was going with a small sort of private practice thing. It was only at the end of the my initial appointment making telephone call that I realized it was Aspen Dental. All I needed/wanted was a cleaning/exam, but they insisted since I was a new patient I couldn't just skip to that, plus they didn't "know how much time to schedule for my cleaning." Whatever. Since insurance was covering it I just played along, but left feeling like the initial appointment was a huge waste of time. I had more x-rays than I have ever had of my mouth at once with the world's most uncomfortable machine. (Waaaay too much radiation for one day for such a focused area, kind of scary!) The hygienist who prepped me at day one and my cleaning at the follow-up was awesome. She should work somewhere better. The billing is weird, sketched me out a bit being shuttled into this side office for estimates and scheduling. And be prepared to make a down payment for future procedures. The set up is typical, each chair has its own tv so you can stare awkwardly past whomever is digging around in your mouth and relax. I'll probably go somewhere else next time. read more

I was not impressed with this dental office on my first visit. Hygienist and dentist both were rude and I felt they had zero interest in me or my dental concerns. I scheduled a second appointment because they are close, I had just moved to the area, and it was only a six month checkup. I am high risk for COVID so only go to facilities where staff is vaccinated. They called me today and said the ADA does not require dentists/hygienists to disclose if they are vaccinated so I might have a hygienist that is not vaccinated. I canceled my appointment. Obviously, ASPEN Dental has no concern for the health of their patients or staff. The ADA does not require vaccinations but highly recommend it! read more

I went into Aspen on Monday. Extremely sore tooth. I selected Aspen because they could get me in right away. They got me in, didn't even diagnose. My sore tooth wanted me to get $4000 worth of cosmetic dentistry before they would even address my sore tooth. I told them I had to have my tooth fixed because I was in such incredible pain. I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep, and it hurt to even breathe. So they sent me up an appointment today, THREE DAYS LATER. which I have been trying to cancel since I went and saw a different dentist on Tuesday. the other dentist explained that my tooth was cracked and I needed a root canal. And guess what they did? I got a root canal. No space fillers for my teeth (that literally don't need space fillers)no cosmetic anything. I have tried calling Aspen for two days and their phones do not work so I can't cancel my appointment and they don't give you any other way to cancel it online. I think it's really sad that they try to come off as this amazing dentistry place that doesn't judge you. When all they try to do is upsell you and not fix your problem. Very very disappointed. This place was absolutely horrible. I needed a crown after a broken tooth and went in for my prep. During the process the drill slipped and I heard the doctor say "oops". The rest of the appointment was tolerable but the fit was off and I was having some pain a few days later. When I explained my pain to the assistant at my permanent placement appointment she made me feel like I was stupid for not knowing that a temporary crown could cause discomfort. When it was time for the placement I sat down in the chair and the doctor ripped out the temporary tooth. No numbing no warning. When I winced in pain the assistant snarked "well would you rather have this or be numb for 2 hours". A heads up that this would be painful and the option of numbing would've been appreciated. My sister was in a terrible car accident and had several broken teeth. The day she was released from the hospital we called to make an emergency appointment. We explained she had several teeth that needed pulled THAT day. The appointment line said "no problem." We rushed discharge to get there on time. We arrived, and she went to the back and there was discussion on what room to place her in so she wouldn't have to move chairs between Xrays and removal. After Xrays, the dentist decided that she would have to come back to have the removal done!?! This is even though she was in excruciating pain. My sister came back out to the office area to make the appt and was told she would have to wait FOUR days. We complained there was no way she could wait that long but they insisted there were no other appointments. We then complained that the appt line had assured us she could have the extraction THAT DAY - the billing rep responded "they should have not told you that" and then asked for a debit card so she could take a deposit for the next appointment. The discussion got heated and the billing lady was very defensive, always going back to the excuse that we should have not expected to get the extraction that day. I have never had a dentist require a deposit for an appointment and my sister's insurance was completely covering the visit anyway. We ended up not giving the deposit or future appointment. On a side note, the next day we found a dentist who was able to do the extraction and upon seeing the teeth exclaimed that he didn't know how she had managed that long and they needed to be pulled immediately (which he did). I also received a snide voice mail the next day from the same billing person that she called the appt line and they told her that they did not tell us we could get the extraction done. I scheduled my first appointment for a cleaning, and they told me they only had time for the x-rays and exam. They were booked out for a cleaning for 3 months. So I scheduled my appointment and waited 3 months. Then, when it was time to be seen for my appointment they called me to cancel the appointment because they no longer have a dental hygienist. Now I have to go to another Aspen dental location and probably wait another 3 months. How can a denstist office not have any hygienists?! UPDATE: After I was finally seen for my cleaning, they submitted the billing to my insurance as two appointments, and I now I owe them $100 when my insurance should have covered all of it. During the actual appointment, it turned out that I didn't really need injections for the cleaning and the cleaning procedure itself felt no different than the other regular cleanings I have done. If anything, it seemed more superficial. But I was charged for deep cleaning nevertheless * Talking to the dentist, it seemed like he wasn't really listening - I was asking about differences between Oral B and Sonicare and told him I have Oral B. Sure enough, when I was checking out at front desk, they suggested I buy Oral B from them per dentist's recommendation. I was very surprised since I had just told the dentist that I already have the toothbrush. This just confirmed that he wasn't listening * The office told me my insurance won't cover the entire deep cleaning procedure and gave me the amount I had to pay out of pocket. However, after the cleaning was done and I had to pay, they said they had made an error and that I had to pay a lower amount than they had originally told me, which I did. Over a month passes I get a surprise bill from them for a balance due yet again, so they got the amount wrong 3 times * During my next appointment, I had called and specifically talked to their office about my appointment and cleaning. I took part of the day off from work, showed up, and they basically said I did not have an appointment. They apologized for the mistake and said that if I wait, they'll try to fit me in. After waiting for an hour, they told me they couldn't fit me in because I required deep cleaning. At this point I realized I had likely never needed a deep cleaning because six months after the first appointment, without having seen me again, it made no sense that they automatically prescribed deep cleaning. * This is when I switched dental offices, instead of rescheduling my appointment with Aspen. The new dental office told me my teeth are in great shape and did a regular cleaning. To top it off, I had asked Aspen to send a copy of my X-rays to this dental office. They never did, whereas my out of state dental office had the records electronically delivered within 3 days of my request. * An observation: this office is so cheap that the complimentary toothbrush they give to clients feels like a melted plastic in your mouth. I had taken it with me on a trip and the quality was so bad, I couldn't even use it. Had to throw it away and get a disposable one from the hotel. This pretty much sums up the Aspen motto. read more

STEER CLEAR! This place and everyone who works here is a nightmare! They must hire everyone who graduates at the bottom of their class! I made the horrible mistake of staying for years, simply because it's such a hassle to switch dentists with three kids. The people working the front desk routinely lost our files, they took additional X-rays outside of what insurance covered, they cancelled appointments at the last minute for bizarre reasons, they had us not on schedule when we showed up for appointments that they had scheduled us for, I can go on ad nauseam. The dental hygienists convinced me for years that I needed a lot of dental procedures that were quite significant and expensive. They routinely did these procedures on me, which I had never had previously, and was embarrassed about, thinking I needed these things done. However, once I switched to an actual dental professional (Weston Dental) I discovered this was not the case at all! Everyone at Aspen Dental is an absolute idiot and they are out to just do all kinds of procedures you don't need in order to get money from you! Beware!! Went for a routine cleaning and they suggested I do Periodontal treatment. The dentist came in and didn't even speak directly to me only spoke to the hygienist and walked off. Hello I'm the customer sitting right here!! The hygienist then walks me to the billing room which is a separate office and the lady there runs through all the treatment charges and ask me for a payment - a deposit in order to book the next cleaning appointment. I inquired with my insurance company and shared the information I learned from the visit and the insurance said they would deem it as not a necessity at this time and would deny my claim so I would have to pay the balance amount to Aspen. Be careful ask them to do a Pre D. This is where the provider sends the treatment information to the insurance and the insurance will review the info and determine if it's necessary and how much they will approve. So you can make the decision based on all facts and not fall for the scare tactics they use. read more

I was in a lot of pain 5 days following my wisdom teeth extraction so I figured I'd make an appt. at the West Des Moines location (as it's closer to me) to see if I had developed dry sockets. The lady on the phone was hesitant to even make me an appt. bc she said if I was not a smoker than I probably did not have dry sockets, which seems strange since there are other ways to develop them. She also suggested I was probably still in pain from the surgery and that it was still too early to tell (???) Anyway, she finally scheduled me. The actual appt. was a nightmare. As the dentist was trying to shove the medicated gauze into my right socket (extremely painful) she yelled for one of the other assistants to get back in the room and do the suction tube for my saliva. She also kept saying it was still very early and was reluctant to look at my left side to see if that had a dry socket. At check out, the receptionist asked if I was coming in for an appointment and there were assistants standing around. The whole thing was a mess-from the assistant walking out to getting yelled to come back in to the actual dentist who made me feel like she had better things to do than to see me. I went to this dental office as a new patient recently and it was the worst experience I've ever had at a dental office. My appointment was at 10am and I waited in the waiting room until 10:45am. Finally someone took me back to start x-rays. The woman who did the x-rays was not friendly whatsoever and made the interaction uncomfortable. After doing x-rays for at least 30 minutes they sat me in a chair in the back to wait for the hygienist, who never came. My appointment was for a cleaning and checkup. After waiting for another 40 minutes the dentist finally came and she asked what she could help me with. I was confused because I assumed she would have known what my appointment was for. I told her I was there to get my teeth cleaned and she actually told me "No". She said "we will check your teeth and make another appt to have them cleaned" at that point I had been there for 2 hours and wasn't even going to receive what I came for. She checked my teeth and told me I needed a fill and someone would come get me to schedule a date for that. Another 30 minutes later someone finally grabbed me for scheduling, where they then told me that my insurance wasn't even in network. So I spent 3 hours there just for them to tell me that my insurance wouldn't cover and didn't even receive a teeth cleaning. I would not ever recommend this dentist office. read more

Patient BEWARE!!! I recently moved to the Des Moines area and needed a new dentist. I went through my Delta Dental app and therefore trusted this place would be trusted. Boy was I wrong!! The initial visit I was told that legally since they identified potential periodontal disease that they couldn't just do a regular cleaning but needed to perform $1000.00 deep cleaning. I was hesitant but again trusted in my provider. After doing the deep cleaning I scheduled my first of 2 allotted cleanings per year. Surprise to me that they did another periodontal deep cleaning with some kind of irrigation. What I thought was a free service provided by my insurance turned into me owing $150.00 as the insurance only covers 80% of this type of service. When I contacted Aspen Dental I was told that "legally they couldn't do anything less than the perio maintenance and irrigation" and that "I didn't have a choice in the matter". I would strongly suggest that you find another dentist that won't resort to scare tactics and "legally" BS. What are the cops gonna arrest you for cleaning teeth? Beware!!! I went to this location of Aspen Dental about 15 months ago for a infected tooth that needed a root canal. I was in dire need of help and it was the place that could get me in and handle the problem. They got me a referral to a specialty dentist that does root canals because I have sinuses that are too close to the roots of my teeth. That is where the good ends. I went back about a week after my root canal and got a temporary crown and fit for a permanent one. I swear on all that is holy, that the person working on my mouth didn't have a clue what they were doing. I was in pain, ignored at my pain complaints, and sent home with an ill fitting temporary crown. I had to have it "reglued" in my mouth several times. I went back to get my permanent crown with no real trouble with the procedure. Trying to leave was a hole different can of worms. I was detained in the manager's office and told I had to apply for a loan to take care of the "debt" I owed for the services. I am double covered on dental through my parents and those policies are some of the best on the market. I should have owed at most $15, but the loan they made me take out was over $700. The office manager told me that as soon as they got paid from my insurances that this load would "go away". It might have if that had not been fraudulent, and fail to file my insurance. I then had the loan company to deal with. For almost a year the loan company and the collection companies were calling, mailing and basically harassing me, all because Aspen wouldn't file my insurance. Then almost one year to the day, we got an expiation of benefits from my insurance. Aspen had finally filed my insurance, one day before they could no longer. Aspen is a preferred provider for BOTH my insurance companies, meaning that they have to take whatever payment that is given to them and the patient owes nothing. When my mother, who works in employee benefits and insurance companies, and I stopped in to request payment to the collection company, the office manager said that I still owed over $300. If you are looking for a fraudulent company that you want to waste your money at, you found one. These people claim that they help people with limited income and are "affordable". They ARE NOT. Run away! It is a money pit full of fraudulent snakes!! read more

I also tried to connect to the emergency number and had to leave a message there as well. My son had his wisdom teeth taken out and we are still dealing with problems three months later and cannot get in to see the oral surgeon and the staff schedules appointments without checking with me or my son and then call the day of the appointment. What a CON !!! I had recently been to my dentist of 30 years back home in another state. I had a cavity that he told me about but it did not need attention at that time due to it was so small. By this time, 6 months later, it started to give me issues. I looked up my who was in my companies dental insurance network and it was Aspen Dental. I had to go through a full exam before they would fix cavity and during this exam their Dental Hygienist told me I need close to 3800$ worth of work done to my teeth and after the exam they put me in a room and gave me a sales pitch on how much I NEED TO GET THIS DONE NOW !! A sales pitch !!! At a Dentist office. I told them I will have to think about it and refused to sign their contract to do this work they were selling me on. I called my Dentist office back home and spoke to my dental hygienist and she actually sent me my charts to my last visit. I honestly have not had a worse time dealing with a dentists office. I had a few fillings filled at the west des moines location, and I honestly feel as if i had been jipped. When they explained the estimated cost and all of that stuff, they made NO mention of me purchasing a "special toothbrush" and after my first cleaning the dental assistant hands me this "special toothbrush" and said here's your toothbrush. I told her how i did not think it was mine, and she said oh i think you already paid for it, I'm not sure. But I just took it not even looking at what it really was. I get home to look at my receipt and the estimated cost sheet and in very small print it said "sonic something something toothbrush" $150.00. so I called the office to explain that I was not going to pay $150 for a glorified toothbrush that no one told me I was getting. she kindly apologized and told me to bring it back with my next appointment and they would credit it back to me. So i brought it back, she said she would take care of it. After my next appointment or two I logged onto my account online to show that they had NOT credited back the money for the toothbrush I had so "happily agreed to purchase" and the office manager just seemed dumb founded like she had no idea what I was talking about. I have received numerous phantom bills in the mail from them EVEN though I have paid all of my bills some time ago. One day I logged onto my account online and it said they actually needed to credit me $15.00. Had I not called them about the phantom bill I got and why my balance said I needed a cred of $15 I honestly feel I would not have gotten my money back. Also the first dentist I saw, I feel had no idea what she was doing. I had to go back several times to get my bite adjusted (no big deal, that happens) except for the fact that my fillings were still hurting 2 months after the fact of me getting them filled, and she was very rude about it when I had to go in to get her to look at them. She simply stated "Oh I figured you would have to come back." I should have known not to go to them after the toothbrush incident but I am all about second chances. Needless to say I'm writing this in hopes that you can do something about the customer service. This Aspen location was recently taken over by Dr. Joseph Formanek and Dr. Adrian Formanek. I needed a new dentist in WDM and had just changed dental insurance plans and they were recommended. I had the best experience. The staff is helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable and both doctors are AWESOME! They recommended I have my wisdom teeth removed and it was the easiest and most painless experience ever. I would recommend anyone to trust this Aspen location and the Formaneks. They are awesome and I will be a lifetime patient. read more

Agree with all the other reviewers, this place is awful. I recently moved to the WDMS area and decided to give this big corporate chain a try despite my typical preference because it is very close to my home and work, is a preferred provider under my insurance and I generally have healthy teeth and gums. The nightmare I went through to get a simple veneer replaced was unbelievable. SIX VISITS to get this procedure done between the new patient hoops (xrays) they make you jump through, a mis-colored veneer, long waits in the chair during apointments, terrible receptionists cancelling and rescheduling appointments incorrectly and an office manager that couldn't speak directly and knowledgably if her life depended on it. Bottom line: save yourself some headaches and go elsewhere because this place is not worth the hassle. read more

Every one was great! Lead assistant did my x rays and was amazing! Dr. Verma is kinda and very gentle!
