No fault to the dentist, I just have longer roots than the average human apparently. First of all, he was able to see me the same day. My past experiences with being referred to endodontist usually meant waiting another week or more before I could be seen. Dr Erickson and his team were able to get me numb enough to finish the root canal. I didn't feel any pain and they even gave me a blanket and some apple juice because I was cold and shaking from the additional numbing they did. Afterwards they provided after hours number in case I had any issues. I was able to text him and he would always respond promptly and put up with my constant worries and questions. Unfortunately I did have to go back and have an apicoectomy on the same tooth. Due to the complications from the initial root canal and my lovely long root! Now I've had countless work done on my mouth but this procedure scared me to death. The team there were very patient with me and put me at ease. I'm recovering from it now and so far everything is going good. It's definitely reassuring to know if I do have anymore problems that he will be there. I wish he was an oral surgeon. I'd go to him in a heartbeat to have implants done. If I ever do need anymore endodontic treatment, he is the only endodontist I'll go to as well as if any of my family will require it.

I'm not one to write positive reviews for businesses that provide what they are expected to…read moreprovide. In my opinion, that just doesn't warrant a written review. However, in this instance, my experience with the staff of Iowa Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons in West Des Moines deserves high praise, in this format, for their exceptional standard of customer service. Actually, customer service is an inadequate term. Customer care is more precise. For starters, when I broke my tooth on a popcorn seed, my dentist referred me to an oral surgeon on Ingersoll in Des Moines. And they were ... awful. They are cold. They are rude. They are all about the money. And they don't hide it. I left there $175 poorer (for the privilege of a brief audience with a surgeon who dictated what he would and would not do), and petrified to return. That's when I turned to Iowa Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. The receptionist who answered my call at Iowa Oral was kind, calming, supportive, knowledgable and above all, patient. She (I wish I knew her name) played a key role in guiding me through the process of selecting a surgeon and scheduling the procedure. When that call ended, I felt so much better about my circumstances. The worry was gone. My mini crises would soon be behind me. I met my surgeon for the first time, Dr. Brooke Sunstrum, on the day of my procedure; a tooth extraction. From moment one I knew I was in the right place and in the best possible hands. Dr. Sunstrum, without sounding like a Hallmark greeting card, is the embodiment of sunshine. When she enters a room, she fills it with vivaciousness. She is personality plus. She is caring. She is knowledgable. She is skilled. And she has a bedside manner I've not seen in other medical professionals (with the exception of my dentist, Dr. Chris Cowherd, who is also the best of the best). I have a medical condition (my heart) that makes surgery sedation risky. Dr. Sunstrum, who was aware of this, took every precaution possible. She and her team had me hooked up to heart monitors, machines that took my blood pressure every minute or so, an IV drip and a device that constantly checked my blood oxygen. And ... she was ever present with her stethoscope. Before I went under, I thought back to the words the receptionist had said to me: "I would trust Dr. Sunstrum with my family." The outstanding level of care didn't stop there. When I "came to" in the recovery room, I was met with a team of nurses and doctors who were aware of my return to consciousness the moment I was aware. They could not have been nicer or more attentive, going so far as to tease me when I stretched my arms outward to test my mobility. "Are you seeing things?" a male surgeon jokingly asked, which made me laugh. My procedure was officially behind me. And it felt good to laugh. Much to my amazement, I was pain free. Dr. Sunstrum saw to that. Once home, and hours after surgery, I was slightly uncomfortable at best. I followed Dr. Sunstrum's instructions for pain management and wound care, and am now healed (almost) and without a single complication. Before I sign off, I want to tell you why I wrote this review. The evening of the surgery, I received a call from Dr. Sunstrum. She called to check on me. She wanted to make sure I was okay and did I need anything. I was completely taken aback. I can't tell you how many times I have left word with Unity Point doctors, asking for a conversation, only to be ignored or handed off to a nurse. I was and am beyond appreciative and touched by Dr. Sunstrum's genuine care for her patient (me). And I will do everything I can to convince my dentist to refer his patients to Iowa Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons' star surgeon.

As a retired Army veteran with federal benefits, I have dealt with insurance systems for decades…read more Never--during active duty or in retirement--have I been placed in a position where I was responsible for nearly 80% of a medical bill due to a provider's failure to properly manage pre-authorization. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened with this Oral Surgeon's office. Let me be clear: the quality of the surgical procedure itself was excellent. The clinical care deserves recognition. The issue is not the surgeon's skill, nor even the total price charged--despite the fact that their pricing is roughly 200% above insurance norms based on MetLife's nationwide averages. The issue is how their insurance claim representative handled our case, and the complete lack of accountability from the Office Manager, Justine. Prior to the procedure, we were told our responsibility would be the $1,500 down payment, with a possible additional 10% due to being out-of-network. My wife even called to confirm this information to ensure we understood our financial obligation. At no point were we informed that we could be responsible for 80% of the total bill. We fully understand that estimates are estimates--but there is a significant difference between minor variance and a massive financial discrepancy caused by administrative negligence. The core problem: proper prior authorization was never fully obtained from MetLife. It appears the office simply confirmed that we had insurance coverage rather than securing detailed authorization and benefit breakdowns. Had this been handled correctly, one of two things would have happened: We would have been clearly informed of the true out-of-pocket cost and could have planned accordingly or delayed treatment until the following year to leverage our HSA benefits; or MetLife may have authorized a greater portion based on their average nationwide reimbursement standards (they pay 60% of their determined allowable amount). Instead, we were blindsided after the procedure was completed. When I contacted the office for assistance, there was no ownership of the mistake. No meaningful advocacy on our behalf. No attempt to escalate with the carrier. The only solution offered was a payment plan--along with subtle implications that we should have ensured pre-authorization was completed before choosing their practice. That response is unacceptable. Patients rely on medical offices to handle insurance verification and authorization correctly. That is part of the administrative service they provide. What is most disappointing is the complete absence of empathy or accountability. The apology felt rehearsed and routine, not reflective of any genuine concern for the financial hardship created by their internal oversight. Again, the surgical care was good. Had we been properly informed upfront that we would owe the full balance--or even 30% more than what we had already paid--we would have made an informed decision without complaint. Paying for quality care is not the issue. Transparency, due diligence, and patient advocacy are. This experience reflects a serious breakdown in administrative responsibility. Patients deserve better financial transparency and far greater accountability from a medical office entrusted with both their health and their financial well-being.

It was a herculean task to get him to communicate with the other professionals he referred me to. He delayed my treatment and wouldn't even say hello, whenever he had to interact with me (which were rare occasions). I assumed that he didn't realize the difficulty of the case, and knew he was probably not capable of doing the job. He could have just said so, instead of treating me in such an unethical, inhumane and humiliating fashion at the most vulnerable time in my life. His assistant probably noticed and attempted to make up for his rude and unprofessional behavior, and that was very appreciated (she is a sweetheart.) His hygienists are amazing and I am so thankful for them. Do us all a favor and retire, Dr. Margeas! You ARE NOT God's gift to dentistry, as you think you are. I went to God's gift to dentistry, and he is humble, kind, ethical, humane and probably one of the most competent REAL cosmetic dentists in the US ( Dr. Sam Sadati.)
