Fishing in the Roaring Fork River
Joey M.

Aspen Outfitting is without a doubt the go to place for any out adventure in Colorado! The two days of fly fishing were guided buy the most experienced and helpful fishing experts, that helped us brush up on our fly fishing skills to bring in some of the most beautiful trout the Roaring Fork river has to offer. While in Aspen, we also went on an all day pheasant hunting excursion guided by Aspen Outfitters. After a warm up shooting session, we had two hunts: one in the morning and another in the afternoon, with an amazing lunch in between. The guides, as well as the dogs, were very well versed in their jobs, leading us across the country side in search of pheasant. Aspen Outfitters allowed us to experience the outdoors like never before, taking home a great haul and stories that will last a life time!

Located inside of the St Regis hotel, Aspen Outfitting Co is an awesome fly fishing guide service. Trip catered to both of us, one with experience in fly fishing and one without. They use nice Simms waders and boots, and the little shop they have inside of the hotel is really nice. We had Tom as our guide. Honestly, after many guided trips around the world, I can honestly say he was the best guide we've had. He was super knowledgeable, provided great instruction, great attitude, catered to each of our experience levels, worked really hard to get us on fish, and actively changed flies and setups to match conditions. We each learned a ton, and couldn't have asked for a better trip. The shop was also really helpful giving us local info on what flies to buy to fish after the trip. Highly recommend this service, great trip.

Success!! Brown trout!

What a great experience! I have been to Aspen many times and used this company for other activities but never for flyfishing. I started my day with an experienced guide, Lawrence, and he took me to Woody Creek to fish for trout! I loved that they put one guide with only one to two customers. Lawrence was patient and so knowledgeable. Loved his passion for fishing and the outdoors. He was so good at "reading" the fish so when they were feeding on top he would change gear and the same when they were feeding below. As you can see from the photos we had a very successful morning catching both brown trout and rainbow trout-good sizes too! Included a visit from a beautiful deer! What a great experience, highly recommend if you are looking for a great activity in Aspen!!

Thank you Aspen Outfitting my son and I had a great time Flyfishing with you yesterday. Cian is an amazing guide I highly recommend using him as he knows all of the great spots on the river. You are guaranteed to catch fish on every outing. See you guys in a few months.

Views from the Basalt shooting location

This past weekend, our hotel in Aspen set us up with some skeet shooting in Basalt with Aspen Outfitting Company. Karl picked us up for a private day of shooting, and we had so much fun! We shoot a lot at home at our ranch in Texas, so we were expecting a more strict and by-the-book shooting experience here, but we got something just as laid back and relaxed as home. Karl trusted us with our previous shooting experience, helped us brush up on some of our "lazier" habits/techniques, and clarified the true rules of the game of skeet. We learned so much!! My husband and I had a blast (ha!) and will definitely be returning in the near future.

Learning to shoot clays

3 out of 4 of us had never shot clays before. By the 2nd hour everyone was breaking clays and we even discovered there was a skeet prodigy in our group, he was hitting everything lofted in the air. The morning trip started with a pickup on time at the hotel and we were driven about 25 minutes to the range. We received detailed instructions on safety and shooting, there were some white knuckles at first... but after everyone had fired a few shots things got fun. By lunchtime everyone was feeling a sense of accomplishment, good fun!

If you're looking for a place for Fly Fishing in Aspen, Co you can't go wrong with these guys! They are very hospitable and a lot of fun. My dad and I went with them and we were treating like Kings. We had a great day on the river and caught a ton of trout. I highly recommend these guys over any other big outfitter. -Quique

As I continued on my goal of hiking once a week in Aspen, I saw friends posting pictures of…read moreAmerican Lake. I absolutely loved hiking to Cathedral Lake a few weeks ago, and this trail is just two miles before Cathedral Lake. However, I could not find anyone else interested in this hike so I decided to go by myself. This was one of the clearest trails I have hiked all summer, and I felt 100% safe hiking this one by myself. If you are a first-time solo hiker, this is a great one. This hike seems like it will start out easy, as you jump a stream and cross a meadow. However, you almost immediately get to 45 minutes of switchbacks. The switchbacks were steep enough, and the Aspens do not provide complete coverage from the sun. While I did not need to take a break, it was a very intense way to start a hike. Once you get through the switchbacks, the hike flattens out quite a bit with just a few more hills. The remainder of the hike is mostly shady, which also meant that starting at 10:25 AM was just fine. You hike through many more pine trees and a few meadows. When you come up on the lake, it is just beautiful. There are some trails around the lake, but you should also look for fish in the lake because it is very clear! The hike down is very easy and fast as well because there are very few rocks on this hike. I am usually slower down than up, and I sped down this mountain. I started this hike at 10:25 AM, reached the lake at 12:00 PM, and I was back to my car at 1:40 PM, after spending a little over a half hour at the lake. My biggest issue with this hike is that there are flies EVERYWHERE. Having a fly by your ear for 3.2 miles each way is rough. People also do not pick up after their dogs, and there is dog poop everywhere. So while the actual lake is gorgeous, I found the journey up to Cathedral Lake much more fun and enjoyable. This hike is worth doing if you have the time, but it wouldn't be on my top 5 list in Aspen either.
