Assaggiare Mendocino recently catered my Grape Escape event at Handley Cellars. Julia and her culinary team helped turn my event into a 5-star success! Assaggiare created a truly memorable experience for my 100+ guests. Instead of just doing passed apps and cheese/charcuterie platters (like you find at most winery events), they set up an elegant poke bar where guests could pick & choose which veggies and spices they wanted with their seared ahi tuni and quinoa. Judging by all the "oohs" and "aaahs" I heard from guests, the food was a huge hit! There wasn't an empty plate in the house. (check out the yummy photos) Aside from the food, the Assaggiare team was incredibly professional. They showed up on time to set up; they cleaned up everything when the party was over; and the chefs/servers were friendly and patient with all our hungry guests. Assagiare catered our wedding at Cuffey's Cove last month and it was amazing! We did a family style service and the plates of food were generous and delicious, including a rice stuffed squash and a porchetta with chimichurri sauce. In addition, they were able to incorporate unique elements into the meal, such as making a delicious blood orange vinaigrette salad dressing with honey from our beehives. Julia did a wonderful job catering my wedding in Mendocino at Spring Ranch. It was for over 200 people and we did a lot of back and forth to get the menu just right, but she made sure we got everything we wanted and sourced it all locally. The tasting and meet and greet was lovely and she incorporated our feedback so the food on the day of was just what we wanted. She is very committed to her work and at times the prep and day of can get very stressful, but I feel like she made it all happen perfectly for a very large group of people. My guests raved about the braised lamb (we provided it to Julia from our farm, not all caterers are willing to be so accommodating like that!), the fish, the desserts and the late night food all went off without a hitch. 5 stars to Julia for doing such a great job. I'm not sure why Julia (owner of Assaggiare Mendocino) doesn't already have a multitude of five-star reviews here, but I can only attribute it to the fact that people in Mendocino don't do a lot of Yelping. I plan a lot of events (for work, mostly) and have worked with many, many caterers. And I'd like to tell anyone who needs to know: Assaggiare deserves five stars. We found Assaggiare through the Elk Cove Inn & Spa, where we got married. It's literally one of two catering companies they are willing to work with for weddings on their property. So naturally we were crossing our fingers and hoping Assaggiare was great, because our choices were obviously limited. Duh. Of course it's great. That's why the Inn won't work with anyone else. Julia met with us in advance to go over menu choices, and she had a ton of versatility in terms of theme (you want Mediterranean? Sure! Vegan? No problem! etc.) We settled on a fairly simple (but very elegant) menu of fish, chicken, risotto, and lots of veggies. She also did some really fabulous passed hors d'oeuvres (including her deservedly award-winning crab cakes), and the most ample, gorgeous, cheese and cracker arrangement I've ever seen. In fact, I didn't actually see the "edible tablescape" until the pictures showed up later: it was apparently so delicious that everything got devoured in the time it took for us to make it from the gazebo to the house- about an hour. Service-wise, Julia was responsive and extremely easy to work with on all details, leading up to the wedding. She made the whole process really easy, and even took a last minute schedule change completely in stride. Furthermore, her entire staff was fantastic. They showed up right on time, set things up exactly to our specifications, and provided high-end restaurant-quality service throughout the day and evening. Julia catered a late afternoon wedding for my daughter at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens; the ceremony was in the Dahlia Garden and evening reception on the Plaza and Perennial Garden. The buffet wedding reception started with hot-passed appetizers (tikka bites, korean beef lettuce wraps, crab cakes) and tablescape with assorted cheeses, smoked salmon and bruschetta with wine/beer bar served on the plaza and Perennial Garden. The dinner buffet was served in a tent adjacent to the plaza; mini-dessert bar with personal wedding cake created by Shani's Sweet Creations and ice cream bar served in the plaza. Our intention was to have guests move between the plaza and tent for dining, introductions, cake cutting, bouquet/garter toss, photo booth, dancing (including first dances) and exit by bride and group at the end of the event. We received positive feedback on the food and service; the service staff were attentive, efficient and transparent throughout the event. Julia was easy to work with through the menu planning and set up at the venue and was very attentive to the presentation details. Julia Conway of Assaggiare Mendocino catered our wedding at Point Arena Lighthouse, Pt. Arena, CA in September 2014. The menu was packed with choices and the food was delicious. Julia's signature "edible tablescape" of cheeses and fruit was good -looking and good- tasting and the guests enjoyed this at the reception. Dinner options included chicken, salmon and beef with side dishes to satisfy our vegetarian guests. The service staff was friendly, efficient and helpful. The bar service during the reception was appreciated by our guests and the dinner tables were beautifully set. All service at our wedding reception and dinner, held outside in a tent on the beautiful coast, was timely and cleanup was not a hassle. We are not from CA so hiring a caterer long-distance was a concern but Julia helped make the process more manageable with good communication and an affordable menu. We attended a winemaker dinner at the Pinot Festival in Anderson Valley on May 20 catered by Julia Conway. It was the worst food we've had at a dinner like this in years! The first course was a seared scallop in a fennel saffron broth which tasted like a water bath! the confit of duck was cold and dry and the duck risotto was like glue! The plate of food was gray in color with no garnish and quite unappetizing.There was a caesar salad in a parmesan bowl which was tough and the salad underdressed.The dessert was a hard tiny donut which tasted like a hockey puck in a fruit sauce. The meal was $150 per person which was a real rip off! Actually I would not even give this person a whole star. She needs to go back to cooking school! read more

We got married in April of 2016 and selected Assaggiare Catering as our caterer, wait staff, and so much more. We LOVE great food and wanted a menu that reflected our personal tastes and the flavors of Northern California. As you may know, north of the Bay Area, there aren't many choices in caterers, and early on in our search, it was clear that Julia was the only choice for our desired style of food. Thankfully, she was also THE BEST choice. Julia was friendly, thorough, and attentive. She understood our vision and taste preferences immediately and made great suggestions for our menu. Draft after draft, she kept coming up with fun interpretations of local flavors for our menu. She was open to letting us source more affordable proteins through our personal connections at local fisheries and purveyors, even though she beat their prices in the end, with the same high quality product. She also made delicious vegan options and special kids meals (complete with boxes with kids' names on them to make them feel special). We asked Julia to take on a lot more than food, and she took it all on without a hitch. She orchestrated all the service staff for our wedding- from table settings, to servers, to bar tenders, to the clean-up crew. She helped review the day of plan and made suggestions about little tweaks. The site preparation and table setting was perfect! The service was professional & fun! The bartenders were really attentive- always making special trips to wherever the bride and groom were mingling to be sure we had a drink in our hand. But most of all, the food was really fantastic. Honestly, the food was so flavorful, succulent, and perfectly warm (even with table service for over 120 people). My family is still raving about our amazing wedding meal. Julia Conway at Assaggiare pulled off a beautiful dinner at my wedding over Labor Day 2016. She did appetizers, dinner, bartending and setup services. All of the food was phenomenal but the locally caught King salmon was especially a huge hit. Working with her was a pleasure, she is very knowledgeable and professional, promptly responds to emails, communicates clearly, and is quick on her feet to make sure things run smoothly. She made my event delicious and fun despite some setbacks from other vendors and a delayed timeline. Her staff is super friendly and professional, too.
