I've been a patient at the Peoria, AZ, location for over 20 years and recently visited the Mesa location because I moved to Mesa. Dr Gordon is terrible at managing his patient load. I've never experienced anything like it. More than a dozen people who had appointment times later than mine were called back before me. When I questioned it at the desk after waiting 2 hours, I was told it was because of the type of appointment I had and that there was only one patient ahead of me. In the next half hour, they proceeded to call another 9 people ahead of me. When I again asked about it at the desk, I was told that it all depends on what you're being seen for (apparently having an appointment means nothing) and that there were now two people ahead of me. What?! This makes absolutely no sense. The receptionist told me to "tell that to the doctor." I was finally taken to an exam room where I sat for another half an hour. When my wait time exceeded 3 hours, I left. I was so angry that I didn't trust myself to speak to Dr Gordon if/when he ever showed up. I would give them less than one star if the ratings allowed that. I will be finding another retina specialist with another practice for the future. read more

Several years ago, when my dry macular degeneration suddenly turned wet, my ophthalmologist immediately called Associated Retina consultants. It was my good fortune to have been seen by Dr. J Shepard Bryan that day and have continued to do so all these years since. He has kept my eyes stable so that I am able to continue to navigate through my similar lifestyle every day. During this time, he also performed surgery which helped me through an extremely difficult period following cataract removel by a cornea specialist. I had been to see Alan Gordon twice before and it took only 1-1/2 to 2 hours. I always needed to allow enough time since I use medical transport and don't have a car. I asked Hector who confirmed my appt and he said 1-1/2 to 2 hours is plenty. My appt was for 10:40 AM. I prefer early afternoon appts, and now I understand why he does not book afternoons at all. People from 8am appts are still there in the afternoon! On 5/6/25 the receptionist said I needed to allow FOURS HOURS for an appt. For what? I had full cataract SURGERY at an optholomologist's office in less time than that (2-1/2 hours!). All he does is have someone dilate the eyes and then you sit for hours. I happened to sit next to a woman that did not need her eyes dilated. She said her appt was with Alan Gordon at 10:30. Mine was 10:40. Only 10 minutes apart! They finally called her at 1:10 PM! The waiting room was full from all the overdue appointments. What a racket. My med transport was picking me up at 1:25 pm. I knew if he called the other patient at 1:10 PM, there was no way he could see her and me by 1:25 so I bailed. Of course, Gordon collects his fee. What a disgrace! Too bad bc I had always thought he was pretty good, but these shenanagins and game playing have to stop. Totally disgraceful! Shame on you, Alan Gordon, for being so disrespectful to your patients! Was referred here by my opthalmologist. She thought I may have an issue with my retina. I got in to see them a few days later which was good. I was sent a link to fill out medical history and all the other stuff online, which I love. I hate filling in all those forms on paper. I found the location easily. It's not in one of those medical buildings, but in a standalone building. The is plenty of parking in the lot. Signage is large so you can't miss this location. Because of COVID, temperatures are taken at the door and masks must be worn. Seating was more than 6 feet apart. The waiting room was less than half full. The front reception desk was efficient and friendly. I was taken back pretty quickly where in had a few procedures done and medical history was reviewed. After that I returned to the waiting room while my eyes were dilating. I waited about 15 minutes and then back to exam room. A new doctor with the practice saw me first, then the doc I was scheduled with saw me. The wait for the second doc was a bit long , but I realize I'm at a specialist and they can't always predict what patients seen before me will need. So I wait and am patient. I know when it's my turn I will get the time I need. Turns out my eyes are just fine. I'd rather be safe tan sorry so was happy to get the referral and the AOK on my peepers. If I ever have issues, I know where to go. Overall a good visit with very good service. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. 1st appointment was a 1:50 appointment and we didn't leave until AFTER 6 pm. 2nd appointment 8:00 am and we have been here for well over an hour and the doctor hasn't even bothered to show up. When I asked the front desk they said he doesn't come in until after 9 am. They schedule people in 5 minute increments and then make you wait at the office for 2-3 hours each time. It is absolutely ridiculous. If you value your time and sanity do NOT schedule an appointment with the doctors at this office. I think the only reason why this office is in business is because they can still bill the insurance even when clients get upset and leave before they see the doctor! read more

Avoid this practice. I took my elderly mother here twice. Both times the wait was over four hours. She was exhausted and it was very hard on her to wait so long. I have no idea if the doctors are any good. The office is just run terribly and they simply don't care. She waited so long the dialating and numbing drops had to be reapplied TWICE. And good luck getting your records when you leave for another doctor. I was hung up on. Retina centers aren't all like this. Find another! read more

This place has no regard for people time. I bring my elderly father here and the care is good but the wait it horrendous. I have waited here for 2plus hours twice now. This place needs to stop overbooking patients apparently. Most of the clients here are elderly, I fear that some may die waiting for care in the waiting room. read more

Dr. J. Shepard Bryan is a rare professional whose performance actually lived up to his stellar credentials. On the recommendation of my esteemed primary ophthalmologist, Dr. Bryan repaired my torn retina in an emergency situation -- probably saving me from at least partial blindness. (Along with his medical "mini-miracles" he's a sports buff with a sense of humor, which adds a few extra points to my rating!) Staff including assistants Shiela, Udera & Liz; receptionists Esmeralda & Iris; as well as future doc Ben also very nice. Just wish there wasn't so much paperwork/shorter appointment waiting room times, though mostly understandable & definitely worth it!! read more

From our family member perspective, it's all about the money along appointments never met on time although we arrived early. too bad the current generation does not understand how to do an on line review, this place may have a different customer appreciatIve, collective behavior or shutter the place. front desk lethargic and disinterested. they interrupt the elderly frequently. not good in any society. again, from our perspective, doctors seem to run late, over booked and demenor is abrupt and rushed. over all, with an exception or two....non of these people like their career or their customers that pay their rent and mortgages. read more

Third time that I've brought my elderly neighbor for her appointment here and the wait time is horrendous. 2 hours here today and still haven't seen the dr. There's 10 people in the waiting room and she was here before all of them. Appointment was at 1:00, checked in online, arrived at 12:38. If you have all the time in the world this place is for you. I saw the reviews after booking my appointment and I was a bit nervous. I was told the appointment could take 2-3hrs. I did consult and treatment in 1 hr 35min on a Friday afternoon. I am so appreciative that they fit me in within 24 hrs of my eye doc finding a retinal tear at my annual eye appointment. The process was quick and easy. And with the potential of vision loss, I'd gladly wait much longer, but thankfully I didn't have to. read more

There aren't a lot of reviews for retina specialists. Let's face it... The crowd that needs a retina specialist isn't really into Twitter or Yelp or Instagram! When I visit these offices I'm surrounded by people that are generally Advanced in their years. I was referred to Dr. Gordon With my eye doctor was no longer able to help me. He referred me to Dr. Gordon because he is the best. He warned me that the appointments took patience. My eyesight is worth patience! I believe that without Dr. Gordon I would likely be totally blind by now. I was legally blind in my left eye. I now see 20/35. I drive. I work. In my 50s, this is no time to go blind and I am eternally grateful for the team at Associated Retina Consultants for their care. They are warm and personable. If you want the best care... If you want one of Phoenix's Top Doctors... Dr. Gordon is simply the best. He is worth waiting for! I'd like to add that eye treatments can be frightening to undergo. He is SO good! Let me tell you how good. I was in his office for a laser treatment when diagnostics revealed that I would not be able to be corrected by laser. I found out I had to get a shot in my eye. If I hadn't already been in that chair (with my husband guarding the door) I would never have kept an appointment to get shots in my eyes. Gentle and painless! I would rather have a shot in my eye than anywhere else in my body because of this great doctor. Don't be afraid Mesa is the office with the most flexible schedule. The doctor was great when I did get in to see him, although we had to wait a bit. My complaint is with the billing staff, specifically Gayle (sp?). Due to COVID and the financial hardship associated with being unemployed, I wasn't able to make a payment on my account back in April. I had communicated that I was unemployed and would need to discuss our account with my husband, but made it clear that I was unable to make a payment, but as soon as I was employed I would. They never attempted to reach out prior to sending this account into collections. She also said she "assumed" we could make a payment because of the extra $600 a week bump to unemployment. Had I been approved, yes, it would have been possible. Instead you assumed that I could and was choosing to neglect my responsibilities. I am blown away by the fact that with the state of the economy, you would chose to make a financial hardship worse by adding 33% onto the bill and not reach out to me by phone. Heartless, considering this was an unavoidable procedure to make sure my 2 month old daughter could see and wouldn't be completely blind. If there was a way I could give negative reviews I would. I understand docs fall behind but when you have elderly people waiting 2.5 hours and STILL haven't seen their doctor and it's 6:30pm!!! I am so thankful for Dr. Bryan and his staff!! They are very patient and explain everything they are going to do. Dr. Bryan is never in a hurry and he actually sits down and talks to me like a real person!! If I could give this location zero stars or negative stars, I would. Not only is the staff unprofessional and blurts out your private, personal information to the whole lobby, the wait is notoriously long. Typical waits can be in upwards of 2 hours. Absolutely the worst way to do business and to treat patients. Please don't go here at all cost. read more

Dr Bryan when you finally get in to see him is good; however, twice now we've waited a significant amount of time for the appointment. This time it's been 1 1/2 hours (yes one hour and thirty minutes ) and we are still in the waiting room without so much as a courteous comment from any staff member as to the delay. I have been going to Associated Retina Consultants for over a year and seeing Dr. Gordon. I get very annoyed because people in the waiting room complain about the slow service. I have been the patient who slows down others a time or two and am so grateful they fit in emergencies immediately. I believe I would be totally blind in one eye if not for the timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment. They warn that the appointment can take up to two hours and I would wait much longer than that. The staff is caring and professional and Dr. Gordon is amazing. read more
