Fort Norfolk Medical Plaza is a one stop shop for most of your medical needs. There are many…read morehealthcare services available in the building including primary care physicians and a variety of specialties. Besides clinical services there is also a full-service laboratory and diagnostic center. The building is located next to Plum Point Park on the Elizabeth River so there are wonderful scenic views from offices on the east side of the building as well as the attached parking garage. The building is always clean and well maintained. Restrooms are always clean and properly stocked and the elevators always operate correctly. I appreciate the attached parking garage which affords ample parking to access the building as well as shelter from foul weather. I have always been able to easily find available parking. Access to the garage is controlled by automated gates. Parking is free for the first two hours. If you plan to be in the building for longer than that make sure to get your parking ticket validated so you don't have to pay. I get my ticket validated in my doctor's office or the diagnostic center which are both located on the eighth floor. I have been very satisfied with my visits to this building over the years. I enjoy the convenience of getting to the plaza by car but it is also accessible by The Tide light rail system.

There are a number of buildings, including what must be EVMS housing. Not only is it less crowded & easier to navigate than the labyrinth of the "across the street" complex, the main building that houses most of the patient related offices is very patient friendly. The above describes building has an attached parking garage with an easy to access elevator opening to each floor's small lobby. There are handicapped parking spaces directly adjacent to the glass enclosed elevator. For evening appointments, a security guard is stationed in the elevator area. Walking is at a minimum, which is perfect for me. My Cardiology Practice is located in the building as is the Sentara Sleep Center, which I've also visited numerous times. If your doctor orders lab work, you only have to take the elevator to the Sentara Fort Norfolk Diagnostic Center. Fort Norfolk Medical Plaza is easy to access, not just from Norfolk, but also Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Suffolk & Western Branch. It is very near the spot where Brambleton forks into the Midtown Tunnel & Hampton Boulevard. There is a Light Rail stop at Fort Norfolk for those who don't like to drive, Coming from Virginia Beach, one can make an easy trip via I-264 taking the best route through Waterside to Bousch to Brambleton. I usually make the return trip on the surface streets ending up on Princess Ann/Northhampton. Do you know why it's called Fort Norfolk? Guarding the Norfolk side of the Elizabeth River & Harbor is the fully restored War of 1812 era Fort Norfolk. It is currently only manned by ghosts of the past. But if you're lucky enough to secure a tour you can experience 21st century men re-enacting their 19th century forebears. Learning the history of Fort Norfolk will make you happy to be treading on historical footprints, if only for a doctors appointment.

I was told that for this Doc (unlike others in the practice that you can just schedule with) you needed to speak to her "nurse" first to discuss your concerns. Um. OK. Left my number for the "gatekeeper" to call me back. Three days later (after receiving no call), I called to check in. I was told that the nurse/gatekeeper was gone for the day. But was also told she called me according to the notes? Um. No. I have no missed calls on my phone, and seriously if she really had called, why didn't she leave a voicemail? No missed call. No voicemail. A week later I called back (stupid me, but I was really impressed with this docs reviews and credentials), explained that I have never gotten a call from the "gatekeeper" and the awesome receptionist (I forget her name - she works for the whole practice and is so sweet and amazing!) got her on the phone with me. And here we go. Said gatekeeper picked up the phone and immediately went in with - "I called you!" I explained that I had no missed calls (keep in mind I was not being nasty - my whole career is in CS so I know better) and no missed messages. She then literally said, "so what is your problem?" Um OK. I explained that I was looking for a new PCP since mine had retired. I also wanted to explore HRT because I was never sure about it, but wanted to talk to a new doc that might understand. What did I this Bish say to me??? Well, it's normal, you just have to deal with it. Oh, and she was supposed to talk to the Doc about scheduling me. She was going to call me back. That was the end of Nov. 2025. Here we are 1/6/26. Still no call. This might be the most amazing doctor in the US. But we will never know thanks to her condescending, not following up "nurse/gatekeeper."

I have been going to Dr. Asuncion for about 30 years or so and cannot say enough about his kindness…read moreand compassion for his patients. I hope I never have to find another PCP because no one in my opinion could replace him.

Is it a natural part of the passage of life when you review more medical practices than night…read moreclubs? Sigh.... If you want a doctor who is not just knowledgable & caring, but also has a fabulous dry wit sense of humor, then Dr. Christopher Asuncion is your man. His "one liners" make going to the doctor a much more relaxed experience. My using Dr. A as a Primary Physician began years ago when my internist retired. A number of people at work went to a large, well established group in the Beach General corridor. So that's the practice I chose. Gradually everyone at work gravitated to Dr. A, a member of that practice at the time. When he left to found Mid-Atlantic Family Medicine, we all followed him. Dr. Asuncion isn't the type of Doctor you feel is rushing you out of the exam room. He will listen to your ailments & symptoms as long as you want to talk. And he remembers not just your medical conditions but also your family, interests & activities. Whenever I have one of my semi-regular sinus infections he will make sure that his staff works me into his always full schedule. And he will do his best to knock it out in the shortest time possible, especially if I have an important upcoming activity planned. It's quite humorous when he walks in the room & the first thing he says is "Got it again?" His decisions regarding whether you should be referred to a specialist for a newly diagnosed condition are prompt & correct. I've always been very happy with his specialist choices. An on-site lab technician eliminates the hassle of having to go to a hospital for blood work. Electronic transmission of prescriptions eliminates the need to carry a script to the pharmacy & make a return trip to pick it up, Access to the doctor is extremely easy. He is available by email, either responding by email or having his nurse or the office staff call. All are responsive & pleasant. The only down side to a one man family medicine practice is that he does need vacations & time off. His PA handles the chores in his absence. But of course I prefer Dr. A. The office is located in the Bon Secours Medical Building off South Plaza Trail, just north of Princess Anne Road. Both the building and the office convey the feelings of new, nicely decorated, clean & well lit. The spacious glass walls offer one an outside view that makes waiting in an exam room much more acceptable that four closed in walls. And the exam rooms are a nice size, rather than claustrophobic. Parking is plentiful and laid out so that it's always an extremely short walk to the entrance. Regular parking spaces are just as convenient as the handicapped slots. There is a covered drive-thru at the entrance, so one can drive an elderly or infirm patient directly to the door. Wheel chairs are available in the building lobby for their further use. Walk into the door at Mid-Atlantic Family Medicine and you are greeted pleasantly by your name. (Does this mean I go to the doctor too often?) It's a much more pleasant experience than the check-in ogre's at some medical practices who give one the feeling that you are interfering with their day. There must be a check-in ogre school, since so many have the same technique. Now I'm thinking of the one liner Dr. A would come up with if he read this review. I'm pretty certain I know exactly what it would be. So I'll just close on a serious note. Thank you for taking care of us Dr. A. You are very much appreciated.

I had been seeing Dr. Whitehurst up until yesterday. After going to her for help for a very scary…read morenew medical issue and having her confuse my information with another patient and making me feel like I was wrong to be upset I am never going back. I also read the information she put in my appointment summary and she quotes that I took beta blockers before and quit them because I didn't like the side effects. I don't know who she is referring to because I have never taken a beta blocker. I have asthma and it isn't safe for me to take them and I have never had a need for them. She also quoted me as being impulsive depressed and anxious. I had just been through the hospital stay from hell due to a headache that caused me to lose all sensation on the left side of my body where I was put through 3 lumbar punctures in a day and a half. I am still in extreme pain and the headache won't go away. Clearly I am not going to be happy when a doctor looks at me and says I don't know that we are going to be able to do much else for you. My blood pressure was 147/97 and my heart rate was 140 this is not normal for me at all. Noone but the nurse seemed concerned. I left the office barely made it to the car and had to call for help to get to the ER because of how sick I was. The doctor ended the visit summary by stating she thought I was overwhelmed by caring for my three kids one of which is ill. Well I have two kids and the only point i made about my children was that I needed to be able to function so I could be a good parent and care for them so I needed this headache to be resolved. A headache that lasts for a week is not normal. I am completely disgusted by the lack of patient care or professionalism. Such a disgrace!
