Frank of Astoria Auto Repair is truly the best - he went to small claims court with me a decade ago and helped me win against a used car dealership. I bought a new car in 2015 so we didn't see each other for a long time. This year, my car has been having troubles- I've taken it to the service center twice and each time they tell me nothing is wrong with it. I replaced the battery myself. Finally, this week, it's straight up would not start, so I called Frank. He told me to bring it in same day, diagnosed the problem same day, and even called the place I had gotten the battery to notify them, complain on my behalf, and ensure I'd be able to get a full refund for the purchase! I hate having to find a new mechanic. Looking for a mechanic is like looking for a doctor - you want someone competent who isn't going to charge you an arm and a leg and mysteriously find ailments that you don't really have the money to fix. And, like with my own body, I never know if their diagnosis is correct or not - I'm not a doctor! Or a mechanic. So I totally just got lucky in finding Astoria Auto Repair. A google search found it as the closest mechanic to my apt, and as soon as I walked in the garage door I thought I had found a gem. The garage was clean (as garages go) and orderly, none of the mechanics were under 40 (definitely a plus - I'm over these teenagers fixing my car! are they even old enough to drive yet?!), and I was greated by Frank, the owner, in seconds flat. I went in for a 50k mile maintenance check on my Honda Fit, since there was no way I was paying the $300+ that Honda wanted to charge just to LOOK at the car! Frank looked up the 50k checklist for the vehicle and read it off to me, explaining what his guys were going to check. He was smart, patient, and conversational without wasting my time - a pleasant surprise! When he suggested I get new tires cause I was about to go on a trip, he looked up several different brands to give me options in price. He did not assume I was an ignorant female who knew nothing about cars, also a pleasant surprise. He recommended maintenance for me without being pushy or over-bearing, and when it all came out in the end, my bill was $30 LESS than he originally quoted~! A miracle! I am definitely taking my vehicle back to Frank and his crew (ASE certified mechanics) and I'm recommending all of my friends do as well. I really could have sworn that my car inspection was not due until the end of July. Luckily the kind police officer who left me a ticket reminded me that in fact it was due in June and not July. After swearing a bit I researched where I could get my car inspected first thing the following morning to avoid any more reminders. Astoria Auto repair opened at 7:00 am and was just a couple of block from my apartment. I arrived shortly after 7:00 and saw Frank. I asked him if he could do an inspection for me this morning. He said he was pretty full, but I could leave the car and he'd give me a call when it was done. He allowed me to park it in his lot next to the shop to avoid further tickets. I told him I could be back around 5:00 after I finished work. No problem. He called me that afternoon and told me it was ready. Support your local businesses! After a terrible experience at a VW Dealership that quoted a repair and labor at $1,600, I brought my car to Frank. He answered my call on Labor Day and was able to see me the next morning. He was able to find the issue and repair what was needed and it was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper AND he only repaired what was necessary. This is the only place I've brought my car after moving to the neighborhood a year ago, and I've been happy every time. Frank, the owner, is friendly, helpful, and good at explaining things to the non-mechanically-inclined like me without talking down or condescending. When I needed some body work done, Frank referred me to a body shop that got it done quickly, cleanly and reasonably-priced. If you read no further, know this: Friendly, great work, good prices, recommend to a friend. This is the kind of mom-and-pop shop that belongs in Astoria--hell, in every neighborhood. My beat-up '99 Corolla gets treated just as well as the shiny new thangs I see people bring in. The service is great--never had to come back for anything--and the prices are fair. Also, my heart melts when Frank and the guys fawn over my wife's Tacoma pickup ("Man, it's too bad it's not the 4x4!"). They don't just show up to work, they all seem to genuinely love what they do. Even though I no longer live in Astoria, I had to review this place because of the service I've received here. First, I should say that I know next to nothing about cars. I get terrified when my car has an issue because i know that it could cost me anywhere between $10 and $1000...or more *tremble.* It's nice to have a place that you can trust and a place where you don't feel overcharged. I've taken my car here on two separate occasions and have had great results both times. The first time I was driving, and suddenly, my driver-side window fell down into the door! I came by the shop immediately on a Friday afternoon and Frank found time to fix the car on the spot. I was so relieved because it was supposed to rain later that weekend! The other time, I called because my car had to be jumped at work. I don't have AAA, but I assumed that I just needed a new battery. I called the shop ahead of time to insure that they had batteries and could find the time to do it, but when I took the car in, the Frank ran diagnostics and found that the alternator was shot! Frank stayed an extra hour after closing so that he could fix my car before the weekend. I couldn't believe how friendly and welcoming all of the guys in the shop were. Each of my repairs cost quite a bit of money, but I think that they would have cost that amount regardless of where I took the car. I was happy with the service I was offered at Astoria Auto Repair, and if anything happens to my car again, I'll always know where to call...aside from the Ghostbusters. read more

Very prompt response when we needed to come in for an unexpected breakdown. We had the car towed on a weekend (they were closed) and called Frank to let him know the location. He answered right away and assured us they would check it out which they did. We got our car back a few days later. I've been to Astoria Auto Repair twice. The first time, a year ago, I needed an emissions test so I looked on Yelp and decided to use them since the shop showed overall good reviews . I got my emissions test quickly done and Frank, the owner, didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need. I was a satisfied customer. Now, it's a year later and I'm back but this time I need more then an emissions test done on my car. My back brake and rotor needed to be replaced so I decided to use Astoria Auto. Again, I was met with professionalism and a fair estimate. Frank called me at work to let me know what he found and if I wanted the work done. What Frank didn't know when he looked at my car was that I was given a $4000 estimate from an Acura dealer of additional work my car needed. When I pointed out the things that the Acura dealer stated I needed fixed, Frank was surprised and even went back to look at the car to double check. No such thing. He could have said yes and tried to gauge me like the Acura dealer but he didn't. I read another negative review on Yelp and was quite surprised. I have used Astoria Auto Repair a couple times for minor fixes and always found them to be quick, efficient and reasonably priced. On another occasion, my car had extensive damage after an accident. Because of a family issue, I had to leave it with the shop for a few weeks and be with my family outside NY. It was no problem with Frank and Astoria Auto Repair. They started work a few days later after the insurance adjuster came to the shop, and did a superb job fixing the car. They also gave no hassle about parking the car in their lot. I recently moved to Astoria (from Long Island...and away from my local trusted mechanic). So when my car, occasionally, began to struggle to start, my search for a new mechanic began. Based on the positive Yelp reviews, I decided to give Astoria Auto Repair a try. I dropped off my car in the morning and got a call a few hours later. I was nervous that I was going to be told it was something serious (thus expensive) but the owner, Frank, told me it simply needed a new battery. Good guy Frank and his crew... Aw I love seeing him at the shop, but generally this means that my car breaks down a lot. My old Volvo is reaching it's critical point here, and a lot of small pieces are falling apart. Now, for the service... After a short inspection, they know what's really the problem. If the problem is time consuming you leave the car and they will give you a call, if not they can fix it in ... like 15 minutes. Frank is honest, maybe a little old-school mechanic, but manages to deliver quality work here. (Don't get me wrong, I usually don't like visiting doctors and mechanics, because this means that something bad has happened to you or your car.) read more

I didn't take my car here because I was given a ridiculous quote for a simple brake job. I needed the shoes (rear brakes) done on my Mazda. I had called another place that quoted me 125$ for the job parts and labor. They also told me 35$ for an oil change. I called this place and they told me just the shoes (he made it clear that this was just for the shoes if the drums were ok and didn't need to be done) would be 280$ for parts and labor. I was like wow that's a big difference. They also told me 45$ for an oil change. I called one last place which is where I ended up going which did both the shoes and the drums for 200$. I don't even want to know what it would have cost me at this place but I'm guessing close to 500$ maybe more since drums cost more than shoes, and that's just crazy for a simple brake job! I took my car because of the good reviews as well. First experience was not bad at all. Second experience was horrendous. Instead of giving me an estimate, they claim it was difficult to get to a part and thus the labor was nearly $400 dollars. If they know beforehand this will be a problem, they should state it. If they do not know, then they should not be dealing with certain car models and simply state their speciality. It is rare for me to give a one star rating. read more

I agree with the other review about Frank being very approachable and unintimidating. I've called him about repairs and emissions tests and he's always said to bring the car over, usually it's done in the same day or next day if the job requires more attention or a special delivery. I never had to make an appointment or anything. The only thing I hate to admit is that I've had stuff stolen from my car while I've had it in his shop. True, that my be my own stupdiity, but quarters that I have in the ashtray??? And a few other things in my glove compartment too. So if you can overlook that, go to Frank. read more

Okay, so I just moved here from LA about a week and a half ago. On the way, I got a nail in my tire and had it fixed in a small town in PA. On July 5th, a holiday, I noticed ANOTHER tire was flat as well. I came onto Yelp, looked up "tires" in Astoria, and saw the 2 other reviews. I called the number, and I was forwarded to Frank's cell phone, because they were closed for the holiday. We talked and he told me he would be open the following day. Well this morning I got up and took my car in. When I first walked in I was confused by the lay out. I walked through a door that said "Office", but I still ended up in the garage. A mechanic saw my confused expression, told me that I was "on the right track" with a nice smile on his face, and pointed out the office was around the corner. The mechanic turned out to be Carlos, and he worked on my car. He was literally ENTERTAINING as he did so! He was crackin jokes, giving me advice about NYC, everything. He then showed me the nail that was causing the trouble in my tire. He did a great job and explained what he was doing. He answered all my questions knowledgeably, and was just a great mechanic. And the best part was, the cost was the SAME as it was in small town PA!! I could not be happier with everything, and I think I just found my NYC mechanic!! read more

Came here on the recommendations of Yelp and I'm glad that I did. After I replaced my battery and the new battery ran out of juice within two days, I called them asking if they could replace an alternator. They took evaluated the alternator and took a look at my engine, and ended up replacing a broken belt instead. The cost of the belt was well over a hundred dollars less than the alternator, and they easily could have charged me for parts and labor for both and I wouldn't have known the difference. They also ran a test looking for a faulty 02 sensor free of charge, a test which many other garages charge to the owner. They were able to get my car back to me in two days, on the heels of an incredibly busy post-Sandy week for them. Frank is polite, honest, and forthright. I will be back here if I need anything else done and would recommend the same. read more
