Having an event at the Calumet was probably one of the worst customer service experiences I have…read moreever had, in my entire life. To understand the context of this business and moral blundering, it is important to know that my family was holding a life celebration for one of my recently deceased loved ones. The Calumet was extremely rude and insensitive to our event needs. Over and over, we were struck by callous nature of the event staff. They really went below the bare minimum of friendly service during our mourning period. Secondly, they had promised to open the back room for our celebration of 500 people (as a condition of the rental agreement), but did not deliver on this promise. Everyone was crammed into a tiny room and many had to spill outside, where it was raining and flooding the entire day. Thirdly, many guests were forced outside before the rental period was over. The Calumet has no respect for the dead, which really says something about the type of management it holds. They will never get my business again, nor should they get yours.

That's fine as long as they're enjoying themselves. It might not be so bad if this wasn't in the middle of summer with little to no shade. Attend this festival if you live close so that you can eat unhealthy food. If you live an hour or more away, it might be best to pass. My friends wanted to go here after having it suggested by someone they work with. So off we went. We were bored after 30 minutes of walking around and went home. I'm sure some of the music and dancing entertainment is okay but what I heard while we were there wasn't appealing. There are also a fair amount of local churches with booths. There are carnival rides for the children but that's going to cost you... $20 for a wristband to ride an unlimited amount of times. You can buy tickets too but I'm not sure of the price. Who wants individual tickets though? Just spend the $20 and ride the rides until that brat and pretzel comes back up. The only thing we tried while there were the krautballs. They were good but four or five bucks for four balls? They are big balls so you big ball lovers will love them but for that price, you should at least get 6 balls. The other thing we tried was the ice cream shop(Olaf). It's not exactly part of the festival but it's right in the middle of downtown where the festival is. It didn't seem that busy even though it is in the thick of everything. The ice cream we had was good(not great) and the place was a nice retreat from the instant sweat we encountered because of the direct sunlight. I can't believe this festival lasts for a weekend! It would likely be better if it wasn't in the dead of summer. If you've ever wanted to go to Strassenfest, don't break your back to get there.

Plenty of seating on day 1 of the event. Carnival games and rides later in the evening. People very friendly and inviting. No admission fee. Food prices reasonable. Brat on a pretzel roll was $5. Cold water only a buck. Pretzel roll was fabulous fresh and homemade. Best I ever had. Deserts are to die for. Try the apple strudel. Filled with hand cut apples for only $4. $20 wristbands for unlimited carnival rides. Or tickets $1.50 each and rides require 2-4 tickets. The rides have seen better days. Event goes through Sunday.

The train station as well as the train had ramps for the disabled. unfortunately the bathrooms on the train are not ADA compliant. As we sat down in the train water dripped through the ceiling of the train car and the staff followed the dripping throughout the car. We went down the tracks for an hour and stopped for lunch catered by the Schnitzelbank. They ran out of the vegetables in our train car and had to go to the other cars to find vegetables. They kept the food warm on sterno.Thus the food was tepid and hard. This was not the food we had experienced at the Schnitzelbank at another time. The schnitzelbank should disavow this food. The only thing sort of German like was the German potatoes. Go for the experience and the scenery. make sure you are not disabled. the staff was extremely helpful.

I didn't get a photo of the small concession list as the line was fairly long. A large soda was 5.50, popcorn only comes in one size (probably a typical medium bag) and is 6, kids packs were 6, nachos were 6, candy was 3 and 4.50 depending on what kind you wanted. They also offered a large selection of Icee flavors. Their Pepsi machine was a newer one as well, with flavor add-ins available. There is a small arcade when you first walk in. We didn't play any games though. The aisles were not marked well in the theater we had seats in. The seats were comfortable and reclined. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience.
