What a wonder awaits if you spend a couple of hours with Peter exploring the stars and what lies beyond. I have been to observatories and Planetariums before. This is nothing like that. This is a hands on, eyes in telescope and learning adventure. Peter regales you with interesting facts and figures for well over 2 hours. He started with a brief orientation of significant constellations and well known stars and then started focusing in on the rest of the galaxy and the galaxies beyond ours. What is equally impressive is that he could remember everyone's name -- even in the dark. We started at 8pm with a discussion about nebula and supernovas. Using his 20" telescope, everyone took turns to see them. While some were viewing, he continued to talk, providing information that was not only interesting, but educational and he did it with humor, making it relevant and what's more, he made it a fun outing. This was awesome....Peter is a fun, energetic and lovely guy that has such a passion for astronomy. We were able to see distance galaxies, Venus, nebulas, Jupiter and the moon 85x magnified...felt like you could touch it. It's a unique experience and one well worth your time. Go in with an open mind and read a bit about galaxies, stars and nebulas so you have more of an understanding. It's a lot to cram in 2 hours but Peter does a good job. We enjoyed the our 2 hours with Peter and I learned a bunch. Peter is a great storyteller and made astronomy really interesting to someone who is not super interested in it to begin with. I really enjoyed seeing the craters on the moon, jupiter's rings and moons, and the stellar nursery. I also liked learning about supernovas and nebulas! I was really entertained for the full "Sky tour". My one request would be some more astronomy 101 for someone who just doesn't know much- like how to spot the different constellations, etc. read more

We have done stargazing on other trips and this one was okay. We only got to see 6 objects, including the moon, in about 2 hours. Some of that was because it took a while for the clouds to dissipate but also because there was too much background info. More planets, galaxies, nebulae, etc. and less of the history lesson would have been better. This might be worthwhile if you or your kids have never been stargazing before but if you have, spend your time and money on other attractions in Santa Fe. read more

We had such a great time on this excursion. Peter was very easy to work with and helped us reschedule when we were rained out. We saw fascinating things, topography of the moon, rings around Jupiter, it was educational and fun. It is too bad that our night was cloudy, but Peter took care of us. New Mexico is famous for its dark skies, and I wanted an opportunity to star gaze. Peter Lipscomb is a committed amateur astronomer with a very large telescope. For $35, we joined a few other people and got an over two hour long view of the skies outside Santa Fe: nebula, beautiful views of the planets (especially Jupiter with four moons). Peter gives clear, easily understood explanations of astronomical phenomena. This would be a fun night-time event for everyone, including kids, on a visit to Santa Fe. read more

When you first come across the clearing with chairs set up in the moonlight you get chills, and it gets better from there. The dark site is extraordinary, the vast number and brilliance of the moon and stars and planets as I've never seen them. Peter started by telling us that we see the same sky as our ancestors, unlike the earth that is constantly changing. He brought the history of the early native peoples to life by explaining how they lived, planted and navigated with the stars (e.g., tracking the movement of the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters, what the Zuni call the seed stars, to determine when to plant in the spring). We saw shadows and craters on the surface of the moon, nebulae--his explanation of the star nursery where they're formed and the cycle of a star from birth to destruction was fascinating-- and the Milky Way. My dad was an astronomy-loving history professor who recently passed away, and we scheduled this tour as a memorial to him. I mentioned this to Peter and he honored my dad with such a light hand and intelligent commentary. We had two teenagers in our party of adults who were enthralled. Peter is excellent at remembering names and varying his commentary to keep different ages engaged. None of us will ever look at the sky in the same way again. My daughter has started slipping out into the cold winter nights now to see if she can find the constellations she saw through the scope. All our reading, visits to museums and planetariums and watching Neil deGrasse Tyson didn't spark her interest like that magical night under the high desert sky. My only regret is that living out of state we never managed to get my dad out for a tour. He would have loved Peter's brilliant discussion and linking of history and astronomy. If you are on the fence, don't wait. Life is short, the earth and stars are wondrous and amazing, explore and learn all you can and take your family with you! read more
