I contacted Astudillos to reupholster two high end Henredon love seats that belonged to my mom. Diana, who is very pleasant, gave me one price which included delivery both ways. The price seemed very reasonable. They picked up the couches and the accompanying 8 pillows. I was acting on behalf of my mom because she is elderly and was not inclined to going out much. She wanted her own fabric and Diana told me I could go to the D and D building and select the fabric of my choice which Astudillos would order for me under their account with no mark up or so I was told. I thought that was great! The job was delayed in part due to sudden medical issues concerning my mom's health which were rather serious and obviously pressing at the time. A few months went by and they had the couches. Truthfully, I did attempt to contact them a few times during this period and they did not get back to me. I had no reason to believe that the delay would cause a problem for them. I later find out they were on vacation. So the upholstery work would not have been done anyway. When I was ready to resume the job, Oswaldo was furious with me, stating that he had to put the couches in storage and that cost him money. Astudillos had never once communicated to me that storage would be necessary during the hiatus. He was extremely nasty and berated me over the phone. I was so taken aback by his explosive demeanor that I still recall how stressed out and upset the conversation left me. Furthermore he demanded $325.00 in storage fees from me, in addition to what I owed him. Otherwise he was going to trash the Henredon couches in the street! There was no reasoning with him. He is like a live wire. He also stated the fabric had to be delivered within 10 days or he would throw out the couches. Of course, I had no choice but to pay the $325.00. When I originally signed on for him to do the job, I was told 20 yards of fabric were needed for the two love seats including eight pillows. However, later on when it was time to order the fabric, they told me I needed 24 yards. When I questioned this, they said I was mistaken and had to pay for 24 yards of fabric. A few weeks later, when the fabric arrived from Kravet, I went to his shop to approve the fabric. We opened the box together and much to my chagrin, it was the wrong shade! I was pretty upset but Oscar did not care because he was in a rush to finish the job. Due to the previous incident in which he bullied and intimadated me, I was not about to argue with him alone in his work place. So I told him I would approve the fabric only if he promised he would contact Kravet the following business day to address the discrepancy. He never called the fabric house, KRAVET; instead he told me HE CUT IT UP to start the job. When I called Kravet myself to discuss the wrong color fabric, customer service incidently told me my order was for 20 yards, not 24 which is what I paid for! Therefore Astudillos pocketed the cost of the extra 4 yards of fabric they never ordered! At $75.00 a yard plus tax, that came to another $325.00 plus tax. So add that to the $325 storage fee they sprung on me, that's at least an extra $650.00. The point here is that they led me to believe I was getting the fabric at cost but in actuality I was paying more by having more yardage ordered than is necessary. Luckily for me, Kravet and I also determined that the fabric had not been treated to be water repellent contrary to what the sample said. As a result, Kravet refunded me the total cost of the fabric via Astudillos. However, getting Astudillos to be a part of the transaction was another nightmare. They refused at first to accept the check and then issue me their own check. It took me months of back and forth emails and calls to finally get this resolved. Thank goodness for Kravet's reputable customer service and integrity. In addition, Astudillos also did a bait and switch on me regarding the delivery which was originally promised as included in the order. instead when the couches were ready, he stated I had to arrange for the delivery. We ended up splitting the cost of that but not after countless emails and lots of aggravation. His workmanship was medicocre at best, actually quite sloppy and certainly not very professional. At first the couches looked good but over time the fabric has started to buckle because evidently it wasn't pulled tautly enough. So if anyone is thinking of working with Astudillos, Caveat Emptor definitely applies to this business. In my case I never got what I ordered and I ended up paying additional fees that were not part of the original agreement. In addition, four of the eight pillows that accompanied the couches were lost. Replacing those will cost me a pretty penny too. Not to mention being subjected to Oswaldo's volatile temperament. Bottom line, make sure you get everything in writing from Astudillos and not on some flimsy 2x4 receipt. read more
