The first time I used Lore was my first apartment and Barbara made it look like a dream. I was sad to lose her. She did three. This is a high integrity operation and I highly recommend it as a part time decorator. I hardly believe any negative reviews... it's not always the supplier but the customer. Please remember that. I could find the old jobs which included canopies, table cloths, wall coverings, matching curtains (of the time quite complex) even shower curtains. Big cushions for the floor and of course to match the bedspread/canopy/wall coverings. So beautiful. read more

Why is it today, businesses just don't do their jobs? I wanted a slip cover for my couch, which should be common place for an upholstery company. The whole process took over three months to complete due to misquotes, lack of timely communication, and a general lackadaisical attitude instead of the, "we really appreciate your business" mindset. It's gone from the CAN DO attitude of "The customer is always right" to "We will get back to you when we're good and ready, and you should be grateful for getting what you get!" As an interior decorator, I rely on trade professionals like these to know what they're doing, so I don't have to micromanage everything. They did not make my job any easier. In fact when making a slip cover, I was advised that there is only one cotton canvas they could use. After doing my research post completion, there were plenty of other slipcover makers who use a variety of materials?!? I had already put down a down payment, and so I worked within those confines, because how bad could it be? Ultimately that cotton canvas attracts so much lint and dirt that this white slip cover has become a white elephant! I'm even seeing pulls at the stress point seams. This was not an intricate couch to cover, with modern, clean lines and NO back cushions to cover. They charged me as if it were a Louis XIV antique. It still cost me a pretty penny, of which I will never get back, but I will always have my voice to review. read more

I have had a few projects done by Lore. They turned out pretty well with Leo their long time employee. He is no longer there. My recent project was overseen by Frank senior, an older fellow, the original owner. He was to make 3 soft cushions for a antique wicker chair and hassock. I gave him the fabric. He returned with only 2 hard foam cushions for the chair and hassock. Nothing like I had described to him. He used the extra fabric to line the seat of the chair which was never discussed and he broke the chair. See photos. There was no third cushion for the back of the chair. I had to buy more fabric. He changed the chair cushions but did not make the hassock cushion as I requested ( like the old one). He then denied cracking the wicker! DO NOT USE LORE unless Frankie Junior or another employee works with you. read more

I have used Lore for 25 years, both professionally as a set decorator and for my home projects over the years. When I was a set decorator and needed a job done yesterday they understood and got it done right all the time, from drapes to furniture. A few years ago they made the most fabulous drapes from my ridiculously expensive vintage linen upholstery fabric, matched patterns perfectly, unsurpassed craftsmanship. I had my sofa and chairs re-done a couple of years ago. Beautiful job! It is time consuming to have furniture re-done for your home; you have to be patient for home jobs. He provided courtesy furniture for us to sit on while getting the work done. It did get finished within the time frame they told me. The craftsmanship is superior and always perfect. I'm a perfectionist and know what I want and they always work with my directions! I'm back again working with them today; they will be picking up a couple of chairs I found at Housing Works. They are helpful and going to pick them up at the store for me and I'll meet up at there shop to go over fabric. Could not ask for better service! read more

I have friends who have used this company many times and have nothing but the highest regard for their work. Unfortunately, my experience for the past year has been that they are terrible at returning calls and committing to a date for service. I have spoken with them several times, and sent them photographs of the sofa repair needed. They have agreed to do the work and promised to call me back to set up a time. Weeks go by without a return call. After leaving multiple messages over many weeks, I get a call promising that they will call back to schedule a date. Nothing. The last message I left, I also asked that if they were not interested in my business, to please call and advise me of that. That was over ten days ago. Nothing. They appear to be uninterested in new clients and are terrible at following up as promised. read more

I had written a review for this company a few months ago. I don't know why I no longer see it. Long story short they did everything right. They recovered a sofa for me .They matched up a very difficult pattern perfectly. It was delivered right on time as promised. It took a very reasonable amount time and the price was very fair. Even the delivery men were incredibly nice and very careful. Before giving them the sofa I went up to the factory to see what it looked like. It was spotlessly clean and very organized. I went up again to see how the sofa was progressing.they tightened up everything that had to be tightened and every seam matched. I recommend them whole heartedly. read more

I asked Lore for a quote after reading about them in NYMag. They sent Leo out promptly and he gave me what seemed like a fair estimate for reupholstering a couch and 2 chairs. I was not sure I was ready to invest the money and needed to think about it, but in the meantime asked him to reupholster one dining room chair, for which I had the fabric. I used that fabric to do 5 other chairs and had one remaining piece of the same size (don't ask why I didn't do them all at the same time!). I figured that would be a good test run - to see if I was happy working with them. He took the cushion on a Friday and told me it would be ready on Monday. Well, Monday came and went, as did 5 other Mondays. Still no cushion. After 3 weeks I called him and left a message and he did not return the call. After 4 weeks I called again and left another message, still no return call. Also, when I called, the person I spoke with did not offer to help me even though I stated the reason for my call. 5th week, he finally called back and scheduled to come on Friday. Well, he never showed up or bothered to call and tell me that he wasn't coming. I waited for him for 2 hours. Monday I called him again and we rescheduled for the following Friday. When a different person came to install it, and it was missing the welting (edging) that matched the other chairs. They took it back. Said they would fix it. Then Leo called over the weekend to say that the fabric was too small. How could that be when all the chairs were reupholstered from the same swatch? Today they came and delivered the cushion and it does not have the welting. Also, it is not as well done as the others (done in Los Angeles). The filler feels thinner and it is not as comfortable. VERY disappointing experience and I will not be using them for my couch and chairs. read more

If I could give less than one star, right now, I would. I am an Interior Designer and contracted Lore to do a little upholstery work after hearing great reviews from others in the business. I was looking for a new company to handle the upholstery for my clients, and Lore's prices were decent. So, I decided to send over one chair to be recovered to test them out. Lore promptly picked up the chair, and deposit. A few weeks later I checked in to see when the chair would be ready and they said they were still working on it. Then, they finally told me that they did not have enough fabric. I promptly ordered the requested extra fabric and had it sent directly to Lore. Since they have received the extra fabric, I've checked often to see when the chair will be ready as my client is eager to get her chair back...Lore keeps telling me that they are still working on it. On top of that, they have been rude and short in all correspondence. Hopefully I'll receive the chair soon, (with the upholstery looking good), and will be able to give a higher review. As of now, I'm not sure that I would recommend Lore to anyone or ever use them again. read more

First, they responded promptly to my email inquiries. I did request a call on the email which I didn't receive, nor a call back when I called and asked for a call to go over details. I got in touch with the person I needed to and having time restraints for my specific order, Frankie gave me an option and guaranteed the job to be delivered to the store the following day. If I could give them a negative star rating I would. It apparently took them 2 yrs to have the factory send them the fabric for the 6 Tulip chairs that we gave them to re-upholster. Early attempts to retrieve the chairs yielded no results. Once the chairs were finally picked up, after numerous phone calls, they were received in shoddy, less than par condition; rippled seams, exposed glue, small tears. I'm amazed that they are still in business. read more

As I read reviews before going to Lore, I need to share my experience, for those who may be interested. I recently had Frank Jr. come to pick up my chair and the velvet fabric I wanted them to upholser it with. When they returned the chair it had a different (cheap, shiny, wrong color) fabric on it. I was appalled when I saw it, but in that moment I guessed I must have made the terrible mistake. (Didn't imagine what really happened.) As I continued to hate it, I went back to my fabric store - which still had the record of my purchase. I bought another yard, to show Frank. Naively, I thought with my proof, he might find my fabric still at his place, or otherwise admit the error and try to fix it. He denied that he had made a mistake, but agreed to come back to see the difference. He took a picture, and promised to be in touch. Didn't hear from him for over a week. When I called again, he just kept denying they had made a mistake. He first tried to claim he had been sent the wrong fabric. When I told him nobody sent it to him - I had selected it at the fabric store, watched them wrap it up, and handed it to him, he still tried to say I was wrong. He charged about 1200 for his work on the chair (not to mention the cost of my fabric). Oh - and their former storefront on Third Avenue in Harlem - does not exist - the site in the on line photos, is now a big hole in the ground - a fact I only discovered when I went to try to talk to him. Perhaps that helps explain how they could make such an error but his denial in the face of my proof is really outrageous. read more

People seem to have either very positive or negative things to say about this company. My experience was positive. I had a Carlise couch which needed a complete redo; the frame was good but the fabric was faded and ripped. They were prompt in coming for the estimate, picked up on time, delivered on time (the deliverymen were efficient and polite) and did a beautiful job. It looks like a new couch, which in essence it is. While not cheap the price was reasonable for the work. Carlise themselves wanted much more. I would definitely use them again. read more

Don't use their services, they suck!!! Unprofessional, rude, overpriced and do very bad work. Reupholstered my sofa in vinyl. They used a very cheap quality vinyl that tore instantly, used the wrong filler for my cushions and messed up the arms of the sofa. Very poor craftsmanship. read more

Lore's prices are fair but be very careful about instructions. I took in two chairs with fabric and then called back to say to hold off on the job because my husband wasn't happy with the color. They said fine. Two weeks later, voila, my chairs arrived upholstered. So I lost out on $400 worth of fabric and $1100 worth of labor. He offered me no deal and seemed annoyed that I was annoyed. It seems their elderly father took the instructions and forgot to mark it down. Then they held onto the remaining 8 yards of fabric ($120 est) and were incredibly rude when I asked to have it returned. It felt like a dysfunctional family business/management. Never again. The workmanship is beautiful, the price reasonable, Frankie and Denise were a pleasure to work with, and the delivery men careful and polite. Their truck parked in bike lane and knocked me off my bike when they opened their door. Not only the owner and the driver did not offer any help, they avoided calling the cops and tried to blame it on the car that hit me after they knocked me off. I was lucky to be alive. read more

If you're not happy with how things turned out, I would hope you would bring it up with them and give them a chance to correct the situation before coming on here and trashing them. I find the one-star ratings highly suspicious. I have used Lore on three different occasions and have had nothing but excellent, prompt and reliable service from them. I have had a couch, chair and ottoman slipcovered, real leather put on my counter stools (which were originally made with pleather) and had them fix a wooden rocking chair. I have recommended them to others as well. Leo comes to the apt, looks at the furniture, gives you a price and all goes smoothly. Highly recommend. read more

I would give them no stars if I could . I had used them in the past ,so two year ago I had them make me some stuff. Two years later and I don't know how many phone calls later .I still have no bed spread that I paid for. I never pay for anything before I get but Frank senior said please it was a weekend and I knew I could trust him .BIG MISTAKE I have spoke to him to Frank junior his son and endless number of girls who answer the phone. So I would be very hesitant ,and they did a crumby job on one of my chairs replaced the down cushion with cheap foam . BE WARNED !!!!!! I had a bad experience with Franky. He told me to visit the store to select the ultra suede material I wanted from sample book they have in the store. I got there not only to find that they did not have an ultra sued book sample in the store but to be told, in may face, that a cloth sample book he was showing me was "real suede." Really bad company to do business with. It takes 5 or 6 emails for them to respond. They promise to deliver things in 2 weeks and then they take 2 months. I had the pleasure of working with Frank Sr and his team at Lore Decorators. We decided to reupholstered 4 dining chairs and got Lore from a neighbor in our building. Frank Sr came up to the apartment with one of his guys and picked up the chairs and the fabric we selected. He delivered the chairs on the day he said he would in excellent condition. As we lived with the chairs for a week we decided we made a mistake in the fabric, the color was just not right for the table for floor. I called Lore back and Frank Sr returned. My family had been in the furniture business for many years going back to my grandfather. They had a showroom and "shop" where they manufactured upholstery furniture. The guys at Lore are old world craftsmen. Some years ago my dad gave me beautiful imported French fabric with a leopard print. He always told me to use this fabric on a chair(s) or sofa . Well dad I finally listened and you were right, as usual ! Lore brought the chairs back, again on the agreed upon day and time and they look spectacular. Great work at a fair price with nice people ! This company has perpetrated a scam which is unbelievable. It is especially unbelievable because they did good and prompt work for my mother a number of times. I contracted for them to make draperies and. Gave them a deposit. Four or five years later, after countless visits and promises, they never made the draperies. The last time the owner came to my apartment and apologized she promised window shades in two weeks. That was gree years ago. I also gave them a large quantity of furniture to repair and reupholster. Four years later, they still have all my furniture. They lost my fabrics. I visited their "showroom" on many occasions. They wouldn't give me my fabrics back. The also won't return my 7500 $ deposit. They have been "looking" for my furniture for years. And yet when I was last up on their premises and saw countless pieces of my expensive furniture buried here and there and also in plain sight, they promised to give me prices and get to work. I have signed agreement t letters by the owner that my work would get done ASAP in exchange for a cash deposit the owner took from my mother. He drove to her apartment to get $5000 . We gave this additional deposit in good faith. After dozens of broken appointments and neither draperies, not furniture ( reupholstered or in the condition they took them in) and the lost fabric which they had refused to allow me to have back. (And then lost). So they still have done nothing. I sent certified letters demanding the return of my property within two weeks, 11 months ago and they wrote me back they needed more time. Then I wrote them n February again, demanding my money, to show good faith on their part, and the return of my belongings. It is so shocking. I had used them in the past and never had trouble. But now I guess I will have to take further steps to recover property that is not theirs and money that is not theirs. Clearly, that are in business: their truck is always n my neighborhood. So, it's not as if they just simply tardy work. It is much, much worse. read more

I had Lore do a job for me a few years ago and the service and product were both excellent. I called them again this year, and things could not have been moer different. It took days for them to call me back, and I explained that this was a time-sensitive job. We made arrangements for them to pick up the pieces on a specific day. Thirty minutes before they were due to arrive, after we had made special arrangements to be at the apartment to meet them, they called to say that they didn't think that they had a large enough truck to transport the items. When I reiterated the time-sensitive nature of this job, and questioned whether perhaps I should take my business elsewhere, the woman essentially hung up on me and told me to "do what I need to do." I have referred countless people to them, including people who have given them large jobs, and I am now disgusted with their business practices. I can't comment on their current work product, but their customer service is terrible. read more
