Dated venue. Carpets appear to be circa 1980s and the color scheme definitely needs a refresh, as well. This was our first time seeing a show here . . . Rubberband Dance - Every So Slightly. Very progressive show and when we got back home and I paid closer attention to the other show options offered on their website, realized this is prevalent from show-to-show. Performers, male and female, came out dressed in jumpsuits, the same you'd see 1) pilots of military fighter jets, 2) farm workers, 3) etc. wear. They were unisex by design as were their undergarments (tops and bottoms) and by the end of the performance, after having stripped themselves of the jumpsuits they each continued their routines with those same jumpsuits tied using the legs and arms of the jumpsuits into a bundle wrapped around their heads and faces. If you've ever seen the movie The Elephant Man, that is what they all resembled. Although The Elephant Man did not perform in their unisex under garments. Just wasn't prepared for that, finding it disturbing. Children (minors) were present in the audience. read more

Have not been to Gammage for many years. Received two tickets to see the Musical Shucked for a Saturday afternoon performance. I knew parking was going to be a challenge. Parked on the street a mile away after dining in a Restaurant and caught an Uber, that worked out very well. Went through Security and was impressed with the number of people there to help you figure out where to go. The seats we got were in tier 2 in the last row and the acoustics were great. Show was excellent. There were over 60 seats in Row 8. Even seats are on one side and odd numbered seats were on the other side. Figured that out after a few tries. I remember when Gammage was first built and surprised the Yelp ratings are mediocre. This venue is one of the best as is the architectural design. read more

I've been to ASU Gammage twice. Once was for a performance of Life of Pi and the other was for a live screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show during their 50th anniversary. When it comes to venues, there are a few things I look for: 1) Parking: ASU Gammage is located on Arizona State's campus in Tempe. Unfortunately, they only offer paid parking. And parking on the street is notoriously hard to come by in Tempe. You can find a spot for free, but you're likely going to be walking for 15 minutes or so. Which is what I do as I like to get my steps in and I'm allergic to paid parking. 2) The Venue: Some good and bad here. First, the good. This theater was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the most prominent U.S. architect. I'm a big FLW fan and I've seen his properties in cities across the country. FLW's trademarks, namely how light enters the building and how he creates space, is seen here. The creativity is awesome if you look hard enough. Case in point: he designed the theater in such a way that if you're on the second level, you can exit easily after the show by using an exit that takes you down a bridge. At other venues, you're stuck in a human traffic jam. Not here. And you'll also see some beautifully designed lights on the bridge. The downside? The seats are pretty uncomfortable. 3) The Views: ASU Gammage is a pretty big theater. I've sat on the second level both times, and while the view isn't bad, you are a little far away. I prefer a more intimate venue, but on the flip side, given Gammage's scale, they bring a lot of Broadway shows here. So the selection is going to be quality. While I haven't had any food or drinks while I've attended a show, they have your usual assortment of beverages and snacks. I've seen many shows at Gammage, from row 12 in the center to way in the back of the balcony on the side. It's gigantic, housing a ton of people. What I've learned: where you sit really matters get there 20 minutes early for parking there will be traffic bring a sweater, it's cold in there! you will walk, so don't go crazy on heels if you didn't pay for VIP parking They have some great shows come through, and it's a pretty building. They have snacks and drinks at movie theater prices. All in all, solid but not astounding. read more

The venue itself is great. The first show I chose to watch here was meh. I like how small and intimate the theater is. The temp is cool. Seating is comfy. Staff is nice. Facilities clean. Odd that they only have 1 singular use mens room but the women's has roughly 30 stalls in it. I guess they don't expect men to watch shows here..? Sound system & lighting worked on the day I went. The show did start a few minutes later than planned, so we did get out later than planned, but we didn't have plans afterward. Good thing there were no reservation times to be met. I'd watch a show here again--just not something interpretive dance style. read more

Went to my first show at ASU Gammage this past month. Though conveniently and inconveniently located in downtown Tempe - all that college traffic, if you know, you know. The building itself is really beautiful, with architect Frank Lloyd behind the design, it makes sense. Though the coolest feature, the bridge is not accessible to the public, or at least it was not when we went. They do have a parking lot as well as a garage nearby. Depending on the show, it impacts if its free, or where you can park which is interesting. In addition, they have x-rays and security check at the entrance. Grabbing our tickets from Will Call was a breeze and the ASU Gammage team was super friendly and helpful in directing us to our seats. The space itself is not overly modern or up to date, but seems well taken care of. I did not realize they had such a robust line up of beverages and food. The bar had a line up of classic cocktails, quite affordable too I may add, and the other concessions had plenty of handhelds and snacks. The space definitely get's quite full with individuals waiting to be seated. They encourage guests to arrive about an hour early, but that seemed like a bit overkill on our end and just ended up with us standing around for 30-45 minutes. We were on the second balcony for the show. The view was lovely and seats comfortable enough. It was a bit hard to hear the performers speak, but I am not sure if that is speaking to my own hearing or the acoustics in general. That being said, really enjoyed our first experience and love the lineup of shows they offer. Will definitely keep an eye out on the calendar for future shows! read more

We absolutely loved the show Shucked!!! However, the acoustics in the upper balcony are really poor and many people in the audience were complaining that they couldn't hear the vocals in the play. It seemed that there were no speakers projecting to the upper balcony maybe? I'm not sure, but it was very difficult to hear. However, I'm sure that if you're on a lower level the sound would probably be better. read more

We came to watch a special Christmas Mannheim Steamroller show. We had tickets on the second level. The sound of the instruments was fantastic and our viewing of the show was great. What a joy this was! The Mannheim Steamroller band was fantastic and brought back so many childhood memories for me. There were plenty of concession stands at the auditorium to purchase drinks and snacks. They were quick . We had a phenomenal time at the show and I would most definitely come back here. The Gold parking lot we paid for was already full by the time we got there. It did take us an extra 10 or 15 minutes to park so if you're going to a busy show, please allow yourself some extra time. They do have a bag policy as well so please look at the instructions before going to a show. What a great night ! This show put me in a holiday festive spirit and I would definitely come back to see the show again. read more

I had tickets to see a show courtesy of Yelp Phoenix. (Shoutout Yelp Phoenix) I was not able to confirm if I could take pics so I just decided against it so I wouldn't get warned or kicked out. The show was ok but the theater was really nice. The only thing that sucks is 1. No one answers the phone when you call the box office even if it's open. The voicemail lists the hours and the phone still just hangs up after that message. 2. Although it should have been clear, I could not determine if parking was free or paid. Hence me trying to call the box office to find out. Which , was unsuccessful. The staff or volunteers rather, were very nice. Everyone was friendly and able to answer my questions once I was there as it was not easily made where to go to see the show for a first timer such as myself. Anyway, if they can fix the phone thing , it would be easier for those who look to the website for answers and still have questions that needs to be answered. read more

Beauty and the Beast We have seen A LOT of musicals and had high expectations going into a production based on a Disney movie. It was packed in the parking garages and in the movie theater; based on the patrons around us, the show would be very family-friendly. Fine, whatever. Belle, Gaston, and Lumiere were far and away the strongest characters. The Beast was extremely forgettable, and lacked the gruff voice we were expecting. I was pretty sure he was a tenor-baritone, and we wanted more of a bass growl. Dance numbers were great. Scenery? Back drops? Set? It. Was. All. AI. It was obvious and offensive. I truly hope this is not the route other musicals take because it was SO BAD. We have seen probably at least 20-30 musicals on different stages, including Broadway. This show was terrible. read more

I like Gammage for their selection of current Broadway touring companies. I appreciate the latest major renovation that added improved bathroom facilities. However, I had hoped for an improvement when it came to the acoustics. For example Girl from the North Country and Jesus Christ Superstar I sat on the main floor and the middle of the first balcony respectfully. I had a very difficult time understanding the words and lyrics sung by the performers. I don't know if it's the acoustical setup of the traveling show or if it's an issue with the acoustics of the performance Center. I was able to hear Wicked with fairly good clarity all three times I saw the performance at Gammage. Be forewarned, unless you know the songs by heart, be prepared to be frustrated at times to understand what words are being sung. read more

One of the nice perks about Yelp is that you can win tickets every once in awhile to do things that's not entirely on your radar. Through the years, I have seen some great shows via Yelp! I'm not someone that goes to musicals or plays regularly but when I get the chance, I usually enjoy them! Thank you Yelp, Bailey, Jack, Gretel and the folks over at ASU Gammage that provided these tickets for us! Appreciate the Yelp love! I definitely enjoyed the show and had no idea what the musical Some Like it Hot was about and I like walking into it blind, so the musical can make whatever impression on me. I also had no idea that last night was opening night, so that's super cool! Yelp told me to come here one hour earlier and so I did. Parking is always a situation at ASU, so plan accordingly. I parked about 0.5 miles away (free) and it was a nice stroll over (and got my steps in). This is an interesting building as it looks like a layer of a wedding cake from the outside to me. I've always wanted to take a bite out of it lol. Apparently, the building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, impressive! I do think the building could use a face-lift as everything felt a bit tired/dated, but it was functional and lots of concession stands everywhere. We were kind of in the nosebleeds section in the upper left area, but not complaining here as you only really need your ears for a musical. Binoculars were on sale at the concession stand. Had I known I was gonna be this far up, I definitely would have brought my birding binoculars! I would say the show was super loud for me, but also, I am getting old and just can't tolerate louder noises like I used to. I wish I had also brought some earplugs for hearing hygiene. I absolutely loved the story line. This apparently was a musical from 2022, adapted from a 1959 film, adapted from a 1935 French film Fanfare of Love. I love that two musicians had to disguise themselves as women to escape from gangsters after they were at the murder crime scene. I love that the musical is set during Prohibition and loved the costume design, the tap, speakeasy vibe, all of it! And the ending is quite exciting too! What's great about this storyline is the message it sends about acceptance, respect, love for everyone. My favorite line of the show, "The world reacts to what it sees. And in my experience, the world doesn't have very good eyesight." Great night out and hopefully will get the chance to come back again and enjoy a live show! read more

I haven't been here in a long time to see a show, but we came to see Wicked. While the decor is a bit dated, the seats were comfortable and there was plenty of leg room. I had someone who was 6'9" sitting by me who had plenty of room. We had very little wait at the concession stand and the staff was friendly. Got 2 proseccos, a sprite, candied nuts and Twix which cost $35. They do not accept tips. I parked using the app in the spaces next to the building, shaded by the solar panels. Cost $9 for 3 hours. Overall this was a great experience and I will come again! read more

When Phoenicians think of Arizona State University, many buildings come to mind whether the stadium or basketball arena, Old Main, Memorial Union, or even Manzanita residence hall. One other significant building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and that building is the ASU Gammage Auditorium. Opened in 1964, the building has been used over the years for many special guest performers, special events, and Touring Broadway performances. ASU Gammage is considered the "largest university-based presenters of performing arts in the world." This is in part thanks to the amazing Executive Director Colleen Jennings-Roggensack, who has been in this role since 1992. I've been told previously that there is no bad seat in the Gammage Auditorium. While I agree wholeheartedly about that, I do feel strongly that some seats are better than others. I have sat in almost every section of Gammage from the front row to the orchestra to the mezzanine to the balcony. My favorite seats are where my regular Gammage season ticket seats are which are about 10 rows back in the orchestra section. I have always seen the stage clearly and also get some great people watching in there. I also have enjoyed walking around the lobby areas and looking at the lobby galleries before shows or during intermissions. Great photographs and paintings from local artists! While I have been to a number of special events at Gammage from the Barrett Welcome to a Welcome Week Wellness Speaker to Homecoming comedians, ASU Gammage is also home to Touring Broadway performances. My favorites over the years include Wicked, Hamilton, The Phantom of the Opera, Six, Rent, The Lion King, Les Miserables, Come From Away, and Jersey Boys. I even got a backstage tour after one show and met cast members. I certainly recommend ASU Gammage to everyone whether one of these Touring Broadway performances or really any performing arts or ASU events in the future. read more

First Show dates me, Devo; (Whip It) lol; Stomp ..... Many more followed in this Iconic building next to the student music building. The building was purpose designed for performing and Acoustics. The Architecture was a passion of love by Frank Loyd Wright who designed and built many Period Iconic buildings. The inside is reminiscent of classical ballet Theatres. After my Devo concert I recall there was some controversy over allowing such an edgy New Wave group to perform here. It did get a bit louder than the typical crowd. Later that year I visited the FLW Taliesin West Studio in North Scottsdale to learn more about his designs. I even purchased one of his understudies Haver Homes influenced by FLW. This is Tempe's best Concert Venue, watch their schedule for shows. read more

Good theater overall. Tickets are not too crazy, however the higher you are on the balcony the harder it is to really enjoy things due to the awkward positioning. It's like you have to look down and lean over. If possible I recommend grabbing seats not on the balcony to fully enjoy the performances. It can also get confusing to find your seats if you're not paying attention or asking for directions. Not the best theater but an okay experience in general. read more

I've been here several times for shows and every time I come I'm always left with the same thing "It's time for a theater upgrade... AGAIN!!". We recently came to experience the Michael Jackson New York theater show. The show itself was really good, but the seating was just so awkward and inconvenient for so many people it seems like. Granted, we were seated in the upper level where I felt like everyone was in the way. Staff is always helpful, but it doesn't really require much because no matter where you're going. You enter on one side and you make your way to your seats on that particular row there's no mid-break in between any of the seating at least for the upper level. Parking at ASU game is typically reserved for season-ticket holders so you do have to park at the neighborhood garage just down the way and make a little bit of a walk. When it comes to MJ, I was willing to suffer a bit :-).... but not again. read more

Whether it's a Broadway National Tour, ASU production, or comedy show, the staff are readily available to sell merch, direct traffic, or talk with guests about the show. The facilities are clean and the Tempe traffic is manageable. I just saw Beetlejuice on August 23rd and it is one of the my favorite shows! The stage design was so interesting and the cast was so talented! Heads-Up: They have a clear bag policy like the concert venues around the valley. If you have a bag smaller than 4x6, you can bring that in. Bags bigger than 4x6 will need to be left outside with the concierge desk. read more

I've enjoyed many productions at Gammage and one of my favorite things is trying the show speciality drinks. ASU Gammage has such a beautiful exterior. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and opened in 1964. It is circular with 50 concrete columns, stands 80 ft high, and has two long pedestrian bridges. There have been so many iconic shows here. I personally have seen The Phantom Of The Opera, Lion King, and Hamilton over the years. The building is multipurpose and has also hosted concerts, ski movies, and presidential debates. When I was a student at ASU, I remember walking by Gammage to my car and seeing Bill Clinton from afar standing on the bridge giving a speech during his presidential campaign. I also saw my very first concert here as a kid. The inside of ASU Gammage is showing its age and is overdue for an upgrade. It holds around 3,000 people and has three levels of seating. The top level can be a little scary to look down from and has no knee space if you are tall like me. Plus there are some partially obstructed view seating. The seats are arranged by even and odd numbers which usually confuses people. And the beverage, merchandise, and bathroom lines can be really long depending on the show. Until recently, parking was free and can sometimes be a pain to get out of. But Gammage does bring in quality Broadway shows which is why I still go. Despite its age, Gammage's architecture is still breathtaking to look at and has been a big part of my upbringing. So as long as they keep bringing in amazing shows, I'll still keep going. read more

The staff at the intersection leaving the garage told me my little purse would not be allowed in "ONLY CLEAR BAGS" Being that little bag meant something to me, I had to run all the way thru the garage to put it bag in my car. Those 10 min made us come to the theater that had already begun. The inside staff said the purse would have been allowed and checked. Signs showed size OR clear! Then, the inside staff looked at my ticket and sent us to 3 different doors. LASTLY, someone was in our seats. It took 2 staff, and 2 supervisors to make the others move so we missed 20 min of the show due to ignorant staff. Beware. Allow enough time for ignorance and be ready to kick ignorance out of your seats. read more

I've been attending Broadway performances at Gammage for 7 years and I really like this performance venue. Seating options vary, but no matter where you sit you have great views. They have so many pieces or art you can interact with prior to a performance starting along with food and drink options to make your night more special. Some not as well known features in this space are Thursday talkbacks with touring broadway cast members posts shows and checking out assistive hearing devices-both are at no additional cost. I will so parking is limited for larger performances and acoustics inside are at best a 8/10. read more

We had the pleasure to visit the ASU Gammage theater yesterday to see The Lion King on Broadway and it was a wonderful and great experience. We had seats up in balcony 2 so our view of the bottom floor was a little obscured so the full effect of seeing the animals walk through the audience was lost on my kids, but other than that it was great. The facility had a great process in place and was able to handle the thousands of people in attendance. Every seat in our are was full so that just goes to show how great the show was. A good tip a worker shared when she saw how long the bathroom line was up in the balcony area was to go downstairs and you could get through faster. The upstairs bathroom only had a few stalls, while downstairs had a lot (probably close to 20). We didn't have to wait at all going downstairs. There was both delays in starting the show on time (about 15 mins late) and then again after intermission (about 10 mins late), then there was an unexpected stop to the show in the second half for about 10 mins. One word of note, if you don't make it back to your seat before the show starts they will not let you go to your seat, but instead you will have to stand or be locked out. It sucks for those this happens to, but is a good thing for those that want to fully enjoy the show without the disturbance of people passing buying and getting up a lot. Other than the delays everything went well and we had a great time. I could definitely see us coming back to see more productions. read more

I have been to Gammage many times and it's usually a decent experience. I went to see Girl From North Country and it was just a horrible time from start to finish. I always pay for parking when I buy tickets on Ticketmaster. I've never had an issue. I loaded the tickets and parking to the digital wallet on my phone. Show the parking attendant the pass--which says hold close to reader. The parking person was so rude. She said she needed a barcode. I didn't understand what she wanted right away. In the time it took me to close the digital wallet and open Ticketmaster she made several rude comments about how I was trying to use a theater ticket and that traffic was backing up. I got Ticketmaster open and she insisted it was a theater ticket despite me showing her where it said parking--repeatedly. She finally scanned it and it worked because i had, in fact, paid for parking. I've never encountered someone so rude at Gammage before. Tickets aren't cheap. Parking isn't either. If they can't use the digital wallet for parking, which they use inside for tickets, fine. But it doesn't say that anywhere when buying parking online. If the parking attendant needs the pass in Ticketmaster that's fine but say that instead of being rude and accusatory. So we get inside and Girl From North Country was, in my opinion, just painfully bad. We debated leaving at intermission. We should have. Near the end of the play there were several loud thumps then people started yelling. The lights stayed down as more people started yelling. I can't explain how unnerving it is to sit in the dark as people around you start to panic. I'm still not entirely sure what happened. We quickly left the second the lights came up. The whole situation felt unsafe--like there is no emergency plan. Given I usually bring my kids to shows, it really made me question if I want to continue to do so. I had purchased tickets to one upcoming show during the presale this season but I'm debating putting them up for resale after this experience. read more

**Experience during covid-19 *** masks are required during the entire show. Make sure you arrive a little early to verify that you got room to go park and walk inside. If you are in the gold lots then it's a quick walk but if you are in Maroon garage you might be to add a few minutes for the walk since it's a few blocks away. The theater is in good condition and the acoustics were good. The seats are not the most comfortable but at least had a little leg room to allow for others to pass by while you are sitting. Granted if you are tall, this might not be the case. The drinks had a line but it went by fast and it was pretty tasty. If you want an alcoholic drink and a none alcoholic you need to buy from two different places. Otherwise I had a fantastic time and enjoyed Hamilton very much. read more

Unbelievably expensive and disappointing experience. Accoustics were horrible! Though we were recipients of a screaming baby in the middle of the performance! Sadly, not kidding. Will never ever book anything at this auditorium again. I've been told Frank Lloyd Wright designed this auditorium. I can say without hesitation it may be his only failure! read more
