They have been cancelling performances by a number of tribute bands and magic shows up to this point. It is a historic (1919) burlesque venue. Today the theater features much of it's vintage look having retained many of it's classic elements, albeit worn. Pre-Covid-19 the theater hosted comedy acts, live concerts and some plays. Additionally they screen international small budget and silent feature productions. Seating available includes: rear mezzanine, front mezzanine and orchestra. The theater hosts a lot of tribute bands for such artists as the Cars, John Mellencamp, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Depending on which direction the coronavirus takes, Separate Ways. a tribute band for the rock group "Journey" will play September 19, 2020. I am personally looking forward to hearing the music of "Journey" Tickets are usually $25 dollars to hear the tribute bands play.

Friends of mine know I'm a big Beatles fan and a couple years ago they bought us tickets to see Beatlemania here at Darress Theatre. The show was absolutely great. And we all had a wonderful time...including the kids all getting autographs from the 'Beatles'. This historic little theater used to be a vaudeville theater and has been around since 1919. The place is really cute, but you aren't going to get full-fledged concerts here. What you will get are a lot of small shows, movies (especially old movies-check out a screening of the original King Kong in April 2013), comediens, local talent, and a great place to have fundraisers. I really love this little place and I hope they keep it going for a long time. Yeah, it isn't a real modern theater and it could use some reservations, but it has class and personality...

My partner was playing in a band tonight- when we walked in to soundcheck an unfriendly woman…read morepointed at me and said 'if she's not in the band she needs to pay to be here'. He asked if there were any guest list spots and we were denied, so he paid full price admission for me to be there. This made a bad first impression of how this place treats artists- not only is he bringing a lot of people out to your venue but I always support the venue anyway by getting food and drinks, though I felt less inspired to at this place. The band wasn't given any drink tickets or complimentary food and denied any guest spots (If you can guess they also weren't paid super well). I'm also a performing musician and I've never encountered this in a venue before. If a manager reads this I highly suggest you update your policy. I understand that it's a business but you can throw musicians a couple of thoughtful bones (like everyone else does), it sends a nice message. Also the same woman was working behind the bar and either talking to her friends or texting most of the time she was working, not looking out for people who wanted to order.

Attended the weekly car show here and ordered 2 burgers with fries at the pavilion. The service is…read moreabsolutely horrible, just downright atrocious . Deserves zero stars. The outdoor burger grill and deep fryer were anything but sanitary, cook was skimming the dead flies out of it before cooking our fries. If you go here stick with the pizza at the bar. The burger was a cheap 1/4 lb frozen hockey puck, and I got about 10 fries with it! I mean for $14 bucks, at least buy decent frozen patties!!!! One other creepy thing is the girl at the cash register kept the window to the kitchen closed as if she didn't want anybody looking in there, every time she opened it to put in an order, she would quickly close it back up.

We ordered food, pretzel bites, Irish breakfast and salmon meal. First they brought out onion rings instead of the pretzel bites so we had to wait longer for our appetizer. Food comes out and the Irish breakfast is missing the black and white pudding..... the reason that meal was ordered. We had to go get the waitress/ bartender's attention and ask about it..she went and asked the cook and came back out saying they were out. Would not have ordered it had they told us that right away, they did end up bringing two more Irish sausages out to replace the blood pudding. He went to eat the cooked tomato that came with the meal and it still has the produce sticker on it. My salmon was good but just basic blackened salmon, I got green beans and mashed potatoes for the sides. Green beans were pretty good but the mashed potatoes were clearly boxed potatoes because you could taste the flakes it was dry and tasteless. Had to add a bunch of salt and pepper and even squirted some of my lemon wedges on it. Update: we added one star back because they came back with our check and took the Irish breakfast off the bill .

I attended the Underground Open Mic tonight to both listen to and perform some original music. This…read moreparticular open mic is a favorite of mine as it is actually where I got my start in the local open mic scene, back in fall of 2022. Located in the basement stage room of Bar Freda, this open mic breaks the mold with their epic lighting, phenomenal sound system, very talented sound guy & engaging hosts. Every Monday, from 8pm about midnight, you can enjoy free performances by incredibly talented musicians and poets from all over the world. Some are local New Yorkers, some are transplants, and others are visitors. Tonight there was a wonderful poet from London, a super talented guitarist and singer from LA, and everything in between. Everyone was phenomenal! The creators, I am Adam-Meagan (aka Not Holden Caulfield) and Colleen (aka Sunbeam Colleen), have really created something very special here. This is such a welcoming open mic with an incredibly receptive and supportive crowd. If someone forgets their lyrics or stumbles in a performance, the audience immediately begins cheering their on, which 99% helps get the performer's moral backup and gets them back into their flow state. If you ever want to experience some phenomenal local arts or even perform yourself, you definitely have to check them out!

The bathrooms are spacious and clean, and I can't emphasize enough how important that is. My suggestion, particularly for sold-out shows, is to arrive early, like an hour and a half before doors, and park your car at the VFW across the street and pop in for a few three-dollar beers. The prices at Starland are considerably more ($8.50 for a 12 oz can) and the VFW is a great pre-game option. The sound in Starland is good, and their layout is one of their biggest strengths; pretty much anywhere you stand you'll have a good view of the stage. It never seems far away. I'm taking off one star, however, because the show I was at (Testament / Overkill / Destruction) was clearly over-sold. I moved around, checked out a few vantage points during the headliner and eventually found a spot with some breathing room, in a raised area by one of the bars. But man, just imagining some kind of emergency situation and the absolute chaos that would ensue with such a packed-in, oversold crowd, it makes a person nervous.
