I mainly go there for the baked goods (croissants and palmiers) The almond croissants are delicious and my go but the ham and cheese as well as the plain croissants are great. They are flakey, buttery and SO good. we also love the cakes and chocolate almond bark. I love knowing that i am supporting a family owned business, and you see the quirks of each member who works there, every time I go it is an enjoyable experience! If you come here just to take out cakes, pastries, cookies, or any of their other sweets, you'll likely get a 4-star experience. If you stay longer... The service is, generally, pretty good. Far better than the Brighton location. However, that opinion's only for the servers in front. The baristas and others...not so much. Most of them are grumpy and not cool. I had an Italian soda and the glass was dirty: had coffee stains on top. So all in all: the service when you get the coffee sucks. Other than that, the desserts are very good. Their tiramisu is excellent, with the right balance of traditional tiramisu ingredients. My favorite is the citron cake, as I favor lemony sweets. If you like lemon, you'll love this cake. It's moist and flavorful, without being super sweet. I don't think I'll try the fruit tart anytime soon, as I'm not a fan of cream subsituting for custard (I'm old school French style when it comes to tarts). I've ordered the baklava here and brought it to parties. Usually I never get a chance to eat it then, because by the time I leave it on a party table and return a few minutes later, it's gone. The only thing annoying about ordering is when you order the large cakes, they charge by the pound. Sometimes they'll tell you in advance, sometimes not. Made a trip down this time to try out their desserts. Had their Framboise and a couple different types of their Baklava, which is a type of Turkish/Mediterranean dessert. A first for me. The displays of cookies, pastries, and tarts was such a food-gasm experience. Everything looked so beautiful- colorful and unique creations abound. The staff was friendly in helping my friend find out what kinds of Baklava there were so don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. The Framboise passed off as a tiramisu inside--on the wet/spongy side with a hint of liquor taste. I maybe totally wrong but it screamed chocolate tiramisu to me. Although Framboise is raspberry in French, there was only a subtle hint of it from the mousse on top. Other than that, expect chocolate-ness. Baklava is a syrupy, flaky, nutty dessert. I'm not a fan of nuts, but there really wasn't any strong nutty tones in any of their pieces so it's worth a try when you're there given that Athan's specializes in European desserts. I pretty much died of diabetes that night- hot chocolate, Baklava, Framboise, and thai iced tea before coming to Athan's. I suggest you pair your desserts with a nice brew of tea. read more

More of a 3.5 than a 3. Pros: Convenient location, quick service, usually space to study, nice music and overall atmosphere. Their small cake slices are good, especially the black forest cake. Cons: Their wifi is weak and spotty. I ordered a spinach and feta handpie to eat at the cafe, and although the barista warmed it up, it was ice cold inside and essentially inedible. Perfect pastries and drinks! The service though, oh boy. I'm yet to go into Athans and find a upbeat, thoughtful, considerate, welcoming (or ANY of the above) bakery attendant. They're always mad, stressed, and act like I'm inconveniencing them And efficiency... not a priority. Evidenced by the fact that the (typically) solo employee always has to walk into a different room to make cafe drinks, and awkwardly doesn't not acknowledge anyone else in the line prior to doing so. I think improving staff culture and efficiency would do wonders for this bakery, since their pastries are so wonderful. read more

Came here with a friend for morning coffee, left with a box of baklava, an almondoa, and a piece of chocolate cake. THE ALMOND CAKE WAS AMAZING. In case you skipped over that last sentence, I'll reiterate, AMAZING. This is a situation in which I will always recommend dessert before the meal. I ordered an iced chai latte. The spices were blended perfectly to bring warmth to this cold beverage. The service at Athan's is extremely friendly. The barista was helpful and even offered to put my drink in a to go glass when my friend and I realized we were running late. I was really turned off by one of the older men who work here. This was my first time in the establishment and I was there to do work and grab some breakfast with a group of people. I wander to the back of the place where all the seating is and locate a table with 3 chairs. There was a sign flipped over on the table so I flip it over to read what it says because I thought it could have been a reserved sign. Turns out it said something along the lines of "reserved for parties of 3 or more", I don't remember the exact message. I place it back flipped over in its original spot where I found it only to have this man come over and basically rebuke me for not placing it back on this small stand on the table where it belonged after I had read it. I was utterly confused as to why he was being so aggressive and told him it was my first time here and that was how I found the sign, not knowing it was meant to go on the stand next to it. He proceeds to ask me not once but twice if I actually have a party over three coming since I was by myself at the time. It was very unnecessary for him to ask me more than once and in a very condescending tone. I definitely was super turned off by him. He could learn to be more welcoming to customers. I was also ignored by the cashier when I asked for a receipt because the same man was running around and distracting her and she looked at me like a I was crazy when I had asked for a receipt the second time since she didn't hear me. You order everything in the front of the place and wait for it in the back area where the tables are. It wasn't too clear at first and the only signs they have to tell you that are right above the trash area in the back. The food was fine, nothing great but I was so turned off by the service that it's not worth coming back for me. read more

I popped in early on a Saturday morning and was overwhelmed by the variety of cakes, cookies, chocolates and pastries (to name a few) at Athan's. The quantity of items here is truly astonishing. I wanted to try everything, but we were late to lunch already so we returned in the evening. Upon our return, I was thrilled to see they had not run out of tiramisu, which I had been dreaming about all day. We decided not to over-indulge and settled on just one slice. The tiramisu was hefty and generously dusted in cocoa powder whose bitterness complemented the layer of sweet mascarpone custard nicely. However, while the custard was rich and thick, the layer of supposedly espresso-soaked cake was not. This layer lacked the dark, acidic essence of espresso I had been looking forward to. It was also somewhat icy, evidence that the tiramisu had been previously frozen, or at the very least, refrigerated for too long. I understand that it is unreasonable to expect everything to be fresh out of the oven at a place like Athan's where so much is made in-house, but the icy layer really turned me off. Because of the above, I felt that $5.30 was a little steep. However, I would definitely give Athan's another try. The next time you're in Brookline, check them out! They may be at the end of Beacon Street, but they're sure to have something that speaks to your sweet tooth! read more

It was late so they were pretty wiped (understandably so) and I got 2 pistachio and 2 chocolate baklava. They were soooo yummy! The perfect after dinner treat. Athan'a Bakery is in such a swell location right off the train and has an extensive pastry, gelato and even tea selection! One of the biggest pluses? Open til late! I was here with three friends on a Friday night and it was still quite bustling at 10:30 pm. There is a great seating area with a comfortable ambiance. Granted, it might have been a bad idea to come for baked goods seeing as it's the end of the day and these things are definitely better fresh in the morning. We tried four pastries: amondoa, tiramisu, framboise, and bolero. We also ordered a pot of tea and a latte. First off, drink prices are faaaab. A pot of tea for $4.50 is a steal and $2.80 for a latte? Why, hello. Yes please. Would come back for more drinks, especially since they have a pretty good selection between black and green tea! More importantly, how do the pastries stack up? Well, tiramisu was on the dry side, had a bit too much rum, and tasted kind of...fruity? It was anything but tiramisu unfortunately. I had hoped for more coffee flavor, but got greeted by what tasted like a shot in my slice. So nah, will pass on this in the future. The bolero was probably my favorite--the thick chocolate texture will satisfies the sweet tooth. The inside was still quite moist despite it being late in the day. Something about it was also fruity as well. Amandoa was good--still moist and sweet, but kind of tasted fruity as well? The framboise tasted fruity (as expected thank goodness) tarty, and sweet. Just as it should probably. All in all, the tiramisu was the biggest let down since we really wanted tiramisu after our Friday dinner, but it's our fault for wanting pastries so late in the day. Despite that, the fruity taste of all the pastries was kind of strange...I wasn't really expecting that. In total, 4 huge pastries, a latte, and a pot of tea for two came out to ~$30 which is quite reasonable for four people. We will probably come back to see if the gelato is any good! read more

Gladys is a treasure at Athans. Their apple strudel is delicious. I buy a whole one heat it before serving and pretend I made it!!! I love the Eggs Benedict with absolutely delicious Hollandaise sauce. The baklava is yummy! I decided to come back on a weekday afternoon and the place was bustling with people having afternoon tea and kids who got off school. I decided to try the mango mousse and the baklava, since I like mango flavored things and baklava. The mango mousse was okay, but the bottom layer of it was a little mushy from the juice or something at the bottom of the cake. The baklava was drenched in oil and super sweet. Found this gem on my way to the dentist (the irony... sweet tooth won in the end). I was amazed by the wide selection of pastries, cakes, and chocolate. I chose the raspberry croissant because I've never had one before. The croissant is super flaky and soft in the middle. The raspberry jam is not too sweet and just the right amount. There are also plenty of seats nearby so it's also a good place for working or gathering with friends. Next time I would like to try the coffee here. read more

Tried their black Forrest cake. Was excellent, it's hard to get Black Forest cake and made right.

It's nice having access to European pastries but they aren't the best. Baklava is way too soggy. Cannolis were meh- nothing like what you get in the North End but I think even Whole Foods cannolis taste better. The cannoli shell was also too soft/moist. We didn't try any of the cakes. Stopped in for a post dinner dessert. Some big hits and some big misses. They have a huge baklava section which made me feel like a kid in a candy store as I love baklava. Turns out this was the biggest disappointment. There was way too much honey sitting on the bottom making the baklava too sweet. The bird's nest baklava was the one baklava that was pretty good beause it had a crunchy top to balance the sweet bottom. It had a cinnamon filling. Eat it upside down! The other items looked great, they have a lot of other pastries, cake slices and desserts for sale, as well as house made chocolate. We ended up getting an apple crisp pastry and heating it up at home. It was great! Like an apple pie filling but with a great doughy crispy texture on the outside. The house made chocolate is rich and delicious and also worth your money. Stop in, but skip most of the baklava! 2 words: Fig dessert. This Greek pastry shop is out of this world. It's perfect in every way! Ice cream year round, delicious pastries to satisfy every sweet tooth craving, and free wifi. Why have I not written a review of Athan's before? Seems impossible. First off, I have no idea how to pronounce this. I've been saying "ayyyy-thans" and that's probably wrong, like everything else local in Mass that I routinely mispronounce merely because I read regular English and not Boston English. Anywho. I heart this place. Until I found it, I used to go to Finale for merely okay desserts. But here, everything is delicious, all the time. In fairness, I have never tried their regular menu or eaten on the premises. But if there's a b-day, or a chocolate craving that needs to be appeased, Athan's is my go-to spot. I love the baklava bar, though I have heard complaints from various Middle Eastern friends that there is too much honey for their liking in Athan's selection (I like my baklava Grecian, so it's good for me). My favs are the Sara Bernhardt, the Black Forest, and the Jamaica (which is #1 in my book). The gelato is also very good. I've never had a problem with the service here, even cake decorated for a b-day with like 30 minutes notice. Everyone has been very friendly and nice. I think the prices are fairly average for the region: around $5 for a single serving pastry to go. K, I need to stop talking about this or I'm going to end up buying a big Jamaica cake and eating it by myself...mmmmm. Decadent, authentic, and caloric- these adjectives all describe Athan's Bakery items. Bringing desserts from this bakery to a party or gathering results in a delighted host. I've seen guests and hosts beam. My last few visits- which were just in-house drinks- were moderate. The visit would have been stupendous if we opted for dessert.
