I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS MEDICAL GROUP! This is the WORST experience I've ever had at a doctor's office! The Patient Portal did not report my lab reports & I never received anything from my doctor. I called the office today, but am not hopeful that I will hear back from them unless I go into the office. On my first visit, I was charged $175 which my insurance did not pick up. I paid the bill in full but kept getting past due stmts. I left numerous messages for the billing dept; however, my calls were not returned! I had to take time off from work & go into their office 2 times w/ payment receipts. They had no history of my payments (unbelievable!). *** The staff are impersonal and mechanical in their interactions. I will be looking for a new medical group next year. Extremely poor communication capability. Calls not returned in a timely manner. The staff could answer the automated message just to give an update. Folks - you are a service provider - you need to drive customer care a lot better. Even a staff member calling back to verify the message and give the patient an ETA on when a call back will happen is important. You could also state then if there are no openings on that date, then the patient can cart themselves off to urgent care where they will wait to be seen. Time to look for another doc. Happy to report on 4/1 that someone answered the phoned and booked my appointment. This is great news! I like my doctor and happy this has been fixed. read more

I went there for a simple pap smear. They did not use my insurance properly and they overcharged for the visit. Medicare did pay for the pap smear and a "breast exam." That should have been considered full payment. Instead, they charged me a whopping $300 for a "wellness exam". And they sent my specimen to a non-medicare lab (!) which meant I had to pay for that (it's probably them). These people are thieves. Do not go there. read more

The staff in at the Ryan Ranch location is amazing. They do their very best to work out the needs of the patients, and they have enough staff to go around to help through. Check in & Check outs and simple and those girls that work the front are so polite. Overall the staff here are friendly, and respectable. I've been going there for a couple years now, and everyone there is so amazing. I just love the nice ladies, from Angelique , Valerie, to Dr. Grayson and her new assistant. I just can't say 1 negative word about this place. I'm so happy for the way they take that extra time to ask me how I'm doing and how my days going. Even , Dr. Q, has been great with me. I highly recommend this location especially to anyone who enjoys that personal treatment and care. You never have to wait long. And to me, that goes to the doctors so often, that means a lot. And I like that they have mainly 25 and older patients. I've been to all 3 locations, and Ryan Ranch is by far my favorite. But, all 3 locations have happy and kind staff. "Welcome to Athena Medical Group, where we treat you with dignity and respect." This is the phone message that used to play when you called one of their locations. It is also a lie. You will be objectified and degraded at the worst medical provider I have ever interacted with. While there are undoubtedly some talented and caring people there, the majority of staff are surly and obviously overworked to the point of intense apathy. I can count the number of friendly interactions on two hands, and the number of friendly interactions with the actual doctors on one. During an interaction where I was trying to understand why I had to resign a document (it turns out they lost it), the doctor said "I don't have time for this." and left me in the room, never to return. Making matters worse, if you take controlled substances, be prepared for an extra layer of crap. Do you like the doctor you got when you first started going? Sucks for you, there are only 2 or 3 doctors that can prescribe your meds. Are you busy on Thursdays or Fridays? Sucks for you, those are the only days they're available. Are you taking a controlled substance that's NOT an opioid? Sucks for you, sign an ultra restrictive "Pain Contract" (regardless of your actual problem) and be ready to catch them when they code your mandatory monthly screenings as opioid checks, potentially marking you as an addict in the future. I understand there's a huge problem with opioids, but treating everyone this way is lazy, stigmatizing, and counterproductive. Do you want to talk to someone in the office over the phone? Check to see if your labs are done, or if an appointment has been scheduled correctly or moved (without your knowledge or consent) (3 times this happened)? Well, instead of calling the office you want directly and talking to someone, now you can call into a dispatch center, where they may or may not pass your request along to the office, which may or may not decide to call you back whenever they have time. Be prepared to do this repeatedly, because surprise! They don't have time. Overall, if you have any choice at all, run away. Fast. This is corporate medical practice at its worst, sacrificing patient care and decent working conditions for staff on the altar of short term profitability. In the 2 years I was forced to deal with them, it's only ever been downhill, and I don't see them making any changes. read more

Just because I am 38 weeks pregnant and I cannot find another doctor but if you ever want to be seen by a gynecologist or nurse practitioner this is not the place. This place deserve 1 star just because the receptionist and a Vietnamise doctor that is not there anymore which was the best decision he could make. Otherwise, this place is just horrible! It was okay when I was seeing my the nsame nurse practitioner her name Andrea, which is really nice but yesterday after 2 months not to be seen by nobody because supposedly I am the one to blame for because my irregularity to make it to the appointments, however, I only have missed 1 since I choose Athena. Yesterday, I had so many questions about my 8 months pregnancy but I got seen by a doctor name Angelina Clerk or something like that which is awfully person and nurse practitioner. This woman should go back to medical school and try to be a better human being and respect and learn how to treat patients. I am glad that I've a big mouth and even though she was blaming me because there were 2 months I haven't been seen which is not my fault whatsoever because they schedule that way, this woman even though told me if I missed one more appointment I will be transfer what the fuck! I am a couple weeks to delivery and she wants to transfer me because I missed so many appointment? When I only missed 1!!!!!! I talked to the front receptionist, he apologized which is not his job to do that and he told me that I have never missed that the nurse was wrong. Also they double scheduled me and if I didn't ask I will show up today and I wasn't nor even schedule but I do have the card from them I am schedule. Terrible, terrible medical group!!!!! Today, January 11, 2017, I got a call from Athena Medical Group. A Medical Assistant called me and asked me if I want my results back from my x-rays I did back in NOV 2016!!!!! I've been contacting the office to make an appointment to get my results back and to see a doctor. But finally contacted my insurance and made a complaint against this horrible clinic. They do not answer the phone and only sent you to a voicemail where you need to leave your name, DOB and brief message so they can contact you, next year!!!! HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! I've never left a bad review but want to warn people. They are terrible with communication, don't answer phones, return calls, or refill prescriptions. They switched providers on me without ANY notice. One person I did get ahold of was sooo rude (one of the Salinas offices I got pushed to). She shouldn't be near a phone for a business. Dealing with them is such a headache. If you have better things to do with your time other than chasing them down (and being treated rudely once you do get someone on the phone) then don't go here. This medical group has moved to 10 Harris court. They are the most unethical group of doctors I have ever been to. The staff is just as bad if not worse! They have rescheduled me 3 times and the receptionist has absolutely ZERO manners or courtesy. Not caring about my schedule and simply saying "You have to come in early. Doctor wants to leave early tomorrow" in her broken Spanglish. Not asking if my schedule permits or apologizing or anything! I feel sorry for anyone that has to see this group due to their insurance- my best advice: run for the hills. My first visit was a week ago, I went in for breathing and heart problems. I was set up with a nurse practitioner and someone doing clinicals. The first thing she did was go over drug history, then went over drugs she could give me lol. In my head I was already over this lady since she didn't even check my heart or lungs. These guys were impossible to get a hold of, they got my appointment times mixed up, they made me come in for follow ups that could have easily been handled over the phone, and last but not least they LIED about my insurance not allowing them to do two procedures in one day. When I called my insurance to verify, they then came up with another excuse that I quickly debunked, and then finally it all boiled down to "policy" that is unlike any policy I've ever heard of. What it comes down to is they want to bring you in for as many appointments as possible so they can charge you the most possible. If you value your time and gas, don't go to these people. I had a very bad first experience at this office. The office staff called me to cancel my much needed appointment the same morning stating the doctor was not going to be in!! Reluctantly and unhappily I rescheduled for 3 days later, only because I am in between doctors right now and really needed to be seen. When I arrived for my appointment, I was told that the doctor left early!!!!! Who does this to a patient?? Very unprofessional, uncalled for and unacceptable . . . Where to start.... At the beginning I guess. The first provider I saw was Dr. Vu. I had a little trouble communicating with him. Although he was competent and polite, he didn't really seem to listen to me or hear my questions/comments/complaints. Fortunately, following his seeming departure from the practice, his apparent replacement, nurse practitioner Grayson, was also a competent and polite provider, and one who actually listens to her patients. My issues with Athena are 1. Their phone system is horrible! When calling their Monterey office number you can tell the call is being forwarded multiple times, usually ending up at a too fast talking voicemail message promising a return call. Sadly, the majority of my calls have gone unreturned. 2. Even though a statement on their secure web portal promises responses within 2 business days, messages sent through the portal also have gone answered. 3. Referrals recommended by my provider have gone uncompleted, even after assurances from the front desk workers that they will make the appropriate arrangements and that I should expect contact in a matter of days. 4. Most disturbingly - and even criminally concerning - is the issue of their submitting claims to my insurance company for procedures they never performed! I won't go into detail here, but I did send Athena a letter and secure portal message demanding a correction to my medical record and reimbursement of fraudulently submitted charges.... again with no response. UPDATE: I eventually did receive notification from my insurance provider of a "corrected claim" from Athena. read more

No stars. In fact I would give negative stars if I could. The staff behind the desks don't know how to communicate and they look and act unprofessional. I was going to this office for my first pregnancy but I have made the choice to leave. 3 times I have come into the office for a ultrasound and they have told me to pee in a cup. If you have ever had a transabdomenal ultrasound you should have a full bladder. I met the doctor for five seconds and he moved me to the nurse practitioner. I think I met her once.......I don't know who I was talking to but she didn't introduce herself. She could have been a MA for all I know. I would get calls from scheduling asking me to change my appointment time so the staff can go home early. The straw that broke the camels back was today: today they called me during school to push up my appointment. I said I couldn't because I was in school late and I would be there at my scheduled time. I got stuck in traffic and ran 10 minutes late. I showed up and the girl behind the desks told me I had to reschedule because the nurse practitioner already left. I usually wait 30 to 40 minutes every time I show up early to my appointments. This office doesn't know what it is doing and just wants to fit you in and get you out as quickly as possible. They do not care about you as a person. They have ruined what should have been a good experience for me. I would not even recommend this office to someone I hate. read more

The ladies at the front desk are the only reason why this place even gets a star. They always are sweet when i come in. However, every appointment with dr. Keiu has been fast vague and cold. I still dont know my blood test results from 4 months ago and im 9 months pregnant. My ultrasounds went well except for my last one which was at their new office and i could barely see my baby on the screen and didnt get any pictures. Very disappointing. Today i schedualed an appointment because i read online that after 8 months you need weekly appointment to see if your dialating or not and if everything is ok. Dr. Keiu didnt make this appointment or even mention that i would b needing to see him that often the last month of pregnancy. I had to do his job for him. I am due in 4 days and i couldnt see him because apparently i have outstanding bills of 50 dollars that i never received in the mail and when i called to make the appointment they didnt say i owed anything after i had asked. Dont go to this doctor office you would be better off seeing a homeless guy under a bridge. read more

First time I've ever written a review. For anonymity I'm not going to go into details about my frustration with this place but if you can find another doctor do it. The front staff have given me the run around, the brush off, you will have to stay ahead of your own medical issues and on top of the staff to get things done. I would not trust them with my health and my life. There is a disregard for my health and no urgency for important medical issues. I should have known when the second thing you have to sign is a document stating in the event of medical malpractice you can not sue us. So bad. So bad. Keep you up late at night bad. read more

My goodness! I should have listened to the previous Yelpers.... This place is a good example of how our healthcare is so horrible . My first time here and my last. I filled out all my paperwork asking to note all my personal issues/ family history I had a receptionist be privy to... Then I'm asked the EXACT same questions by the medical assistant ( which I didnt feel neither needed to know) , protocol I guess... Then, I get in the exam room and the "doc" had horrible bedside manners, she never closed the door for privacy. Was extremely loud about my concern and issues and make some unruly remarks, holding tears back, kept my composure. She didn't do much as check up, asked the EXACT same questions I already noted on my paperwork and the same questions asked by the medical assistant... My questions, why do all these people need to know if none of it is shared with the person, which of whom I'm there to see?... There was NO care, NO concern , NO sense of anything really. Left without making a follow up. My fault, lesson learned! I'll be doing my own search for another PCP. read more

this is the first time I have ever yelped a business...I am so disappointed with the front office of this medical group that I just had to. We are pleased with our Dr who recently moved to this group, but the front office and phone system is so bad and amateur it is frightening. when you call you get a menu, you select...then music starts and it goes on and on..the a message comes on and says "no voicemail for this extension, Good bye"..OR if you are lucky you get a receptionist, that may or may not give your desperate message to your DR, I tried 3 days in a row. My husband is very sick, and I cannot talk to his DR. going on day 5. I agree with Alessandro and Jessica this office needs some serious work! yes, the receptionist is sweet...and that helps! BUT usually your customers are sick people and this is just not except-able practice, to not be able to talk to your DR! read more

I am beyond frustrated with this this Dr.s office. Had my first visit a month ago and it was okay, dr and nurse were great but front staff weren't as pleasant. Long story short; ALL I needed was to have my prescription sent to my pharmacy but they wanted me to "come in" to talk to the Dr. when I didn't need a follow up or anything. I didn't want my insurance to have to pay for a visit that wasn't necessary. Didn't get the employee's name but I wish I would have because she was SO rude and careless about my situation and just suggested I'd make the visit (probably to give them more money). They should really consider hiring better staff who actually are respectful, caring and selfless about their patients.If you don't like your job and that's what making you treat patients that way then find something you do like because you really made my morning unpleasant. read more

I went to the office location on Lower Ragsdale Dr. in Monterey. NEVER GO HERE. I would rate 0 stars if it were possible. The service I received was so poor, the one star rating will have to go to the interior decorator. The only pleasant interaction was from the medical assistant who took my temperature, blood pressure, and weight, and that accounted for maybe 5 minutes of the total visit. The woman at the front desk told me they didn't take my insurance (Anthem Blue Cross) and said I would have to pay the full balance out of pocket. I thought, that sucks but I'm already here so I may as well take the appointment I made. BIG MISTAKE. When I got back to see the "doctor" he came in and introduced himself as William Khieu and then proceeded to rush me through a series of questions in what couldn't have been more than a 10 minute conversation, during which he said he wanted to introduce me to his physician's assistant who would likely be handling my appointment if he was too busy. Then I was rushed out the door back to the front desk where I was charged $100 or so. I thought, that sounds like the charge for a standard office visit with no insurance coverage, I'll just pay it and be sure to never come back to this office again since the service was complete garbage and that'll be the end of it. That's what I thought, but now, 3 months later I find that they've not only sent me an ADDITIONAL bill, but they charged my insurance as well. The insurance that they said they DIDN'T TAKE IN THE FIRST PLACE. I called to complain, and after explaining my situation to a young woman on the phone, she asked me to hold for a few minutes, then she put someone else on the phone who told me they do in fact take my insurance (at least now they do) and I'm NOW being charged well over $200 for a "new patient visit" and an "office visit", on top of what I already paid them 3 MONTHS AGO when they said I'd have to pay the TOTAL balance out of pocket. I'm not an english major but I'm fairly certain that when someone says total it means the whole damn thing. read more

I had been seeing Dr. Rosen at this facility, 1332 Natividad Dr. Suite B, for some years. He retired and Athena Medical Group took over his office. I had scheduled an appt. not knowing that Dr. Rosen had retired. I am male and was seen by an OBGYN Dr. for my high blood pressure. The visit was fine. My next three visits I was seen by a PA. My last visit was 3 months ago. I tried to fill my prescription at the pharmacy and was told they need to hear from my Dr's office. I tried to phone them and after listening to all of the prompts, I chose the proper one and waited for the recording, "Your call is very important to us. Please wait and you call will be answered in the order received". After exactly 15 minutes on hold, the recording said "We have attempted to connect you with an agent but all are busy. Please leave your name and # after the beep and we will return your call". Then it stated that the voice mail box was full. I tried again trying a different prompt, but got the same thing on every prompt I tried. I put the phone on speaker while at work and went through this for over an hour before I got ahold of the office. I was told that they would have the Dr. phone the pharmacy in the next couple of hours to approve my prescription. I swung by the pharmacy after work and nobody from Athena had called them. I told them that I was totally out of my blood pressure meds and couldn't get ahold of anybody at the Dr's office. The pharmacy gave me an emergency supply of three pills. They stated that they would fax over to the Dr's office and they would post it as an urgent notice. So today I stated over again and went into the Dr's office and asked why they had not filled the prescription. They said the had not received anything from the pharmamcy. I asked if they could give me the prescription so I could take it to them. They gave me a copy saying that was good enough. I told them if that did not work that I would be back and would not be happy! Went back to the pharmacy and since it was a copy that they would have to call and get approval. They were told that they did not give me the copy and there is no way they would give that to a patient. I asked if I could talk to them since I was just there. After talking to the receptionist, I come to find out that all of thier calls are routed to their Gonzales office and I would have to go back by the Natividad office. By this time I was really pissed!!!!! I went back and they said they has just talked to the pharmacy and it would be ready shortly. I blew out of there and went to the pharmacy, finally got my prescription and was told by the pharmacy that the Dr office balled them out for not taking a copy and filling it. This place is a joke, the staff is rude and it is obvious that the staff has been told not to answer any questions. I am looking for a new Dr.,which I should have done after Rosen retired. While back and forth to this office I spoke with other patients in the waiting room, and all of them had had similar experiences. I would avoid this place like the plague!!!!!!!!! read more
