I don't know if I booked a nail appointment or signed up for boot camp. Nina at this jail salon treated my hands like they personally offended her. If my hand wasn't positioned exactly how she wanted, SMACK. If my fingers didn't move fast enough, SMACK. If I blinked wrong? Honestly, I'm surprised I didn't get smacked for that too. It felt more like dealing with a correctional officer than a nail tech. I was genuinely afraid to move my fingers because every tiny adjustment was met with a disciplinary tap, as if I was being punished just for existing. (There were other men there who actually took responsibility, such as the ones who asked for a refund after she added gel when we didn't request it -- and she charged us for a spa treatment instead of the usual $20 fee.) At that point, I was just expecting to be charged extra for breathing or emotional distress. If you enjoy being treated like an inmate instead of a client, this is the place for you. If not, run. I know there's like a million nail salons around 1604/Culebra area, but this place did a pretty good job. The reason for 3 stars is the whole salon smelled sooo strongly of chemical nail everythiiiiing that I had to take shallow breaths so I won't inhale too much of it. Other than that, they were all friendly, enjoyed the usual chat with them. They do offer discounts and they are not that busy. Fairly priced and great quality. My shellac nails last almost a month, the only reason I took it was because my nails weeds growing. I told him my colors and quietly under his breath he asked me a question and his boss who I'm assuming was the manager told him shhh shhh no and mumbled to him something in Vietnamese which I also assume was don't ask just do. I love this place so much! The staff here are so nice and really attentive. I came in with my sister and mother for a little pampering one day. I got my nails really long. Writing this review is truly heartbreaking. I've been to this establishment for 4 years. Always had great service. I made friends with almost every employee. Having that connection truly made a difference. Until now. Since become a new mom I never leave my home other than to go to work and get groceries. I decided to treat myself to a pedicure for a late Mother's Day gift. 2 days later I felt bumps around my ankle. Thought made some type of bug bit me when I was walking through my front yard. Then 5 days passed and I had spots appear on my ankle and lower legs, similar to how chicken pox look. On the 6th day, I started getting concerned and so I called the spa to inform them I was heading to Texas Med because I believe I may have gotten some allergic reaction to something from their shop. Of those as any business they tried to assure me everything is clean there. After I left Texas Med on the 6th day I was informed that I had FUNGUS on my legs!!! I was in such shock. They told me how it can take 4-6 weeks to get rid of, how it's contagious, and how much of a health hazard this can be. I was given oral medication and ointment to apply. It's been 9 days since I've visited Texas Med and my feet/lower legs are completely covered in fungus!! I am now going to seek medical treatment with my PA in hopes that she can find a quicker solution to this. It's only getting worse each day. I was conflicted on writing this post but I came across someone how posted something similar a year ago from this same location, she had gotten fungus as well but in her toe. I'm writing this to help prevent anyone else from experiencing what I'm currently going through. I cry everyday from this. I have to wear pants and socks 24/7 so that my 8month baby doesn't get infected. Fighting the urge to not scratch, having to endure the pain of my legs and feet burning. Each time I come in here they are always sooooo busy, which is great business for them! But they never turn customers away. Instead of saying they don't have the time, they ask the customer to wait... then 30+ minutes goes by and the customers end up walking out. There are only two techs that I've noticed who do nails, and I don't think they've ever had a conversation with me. I've been coming in every 3 weeks for about 6 months. I always come back because I think the next time it would be better but it's just getting worse. I went in one week ago to get my acrylic nails taken off and to get a gel mani. I was charged $60 for my nails to look like this (this is one week grow out, but you can see how awful the cuticles look). They had grooves in almost all of the nails and four of my nails are already peeling. I refuse to keep giving them money for nails to look like this.. please hire more staff or train the other ten people doing pedicures how to do nails so the nails techs can take their time with their customers! They use all natural ingredients, which I really like. We got here during a lull and had no wait at all. Linh did an amazing job on my nails! She has magic hands that give an incredible calf massage! I had picked a color from the color book but when she started to apply the color to my nails, I didn't like it so she graciously removed the color and let me pick a new color. They place wasn't packed and they did a good job at safety precautions for covid. Adequate spacing, masks always on and plastic barriers . I am one that NEVER complains. I just don't go back to places. I don't like bad-mouthing local or small business at all. However this is different. Yes I wanted a manicure and I know the polish doesn't last as long as shellac or gel. I informed the nail tech I did not want the drill so that's why I just got a manicure. I just moved to Texas leaving behind a talented nail tech that could do shellac and gel without drilling on your nails and it could last!! However nail techs at Athenas do not have that talent. They said they have to use the drill. So I settled for a manicure. The manicure was done in the pedicure seat. I do not care if they are trying to get you in and out that is so unprofessional and not relaxing at all. Myself and my three friends were the only people at the time in this slow shop. I should have known something then. I digress. I feel that because I did not get the shellac or gel they rushed and did such a poor job. Then to have the nerve to charge $25 on a basic ass manicure that was literally a 60 second dip in water. Unprofessional and talentless. I looked at reviews prior to going and I was excited. But not being able to do shellac and gel without drilling on people's nails is beyond me. I've been on my natural nail journey for a while and this shop doesn't know how to cater to that. read more

Honestly, the worst pedicure I have gotten. Usually a place is bad if they are just mediocre, but this was just BAD. I understand staff constraints with COVID. If you don't have the staff to accommodate walk ins, then don't allow walk-ins. No cuticle remover or callous remover was used. But my nails and heels were scraped aggressively. The nail tech used a hard brush to scrub the tops of my feet very aggressively and they still hurt! On top of that, I waited 30 minutes in cold water before he came by just to have him leave right after filing my toes. I chose their most expensive pedicure $60 Herbal pedicure. After this experience I just knew he wouldn't have taken the time or care to make the pedicure worth it so I asked for a regular pedicure instead. It was still not worth it in my opinion because the polish job was terrible. There are gaps and he used way too much polish at once, to be done sooner. I had to clean it up myself. Most nail salons have just been mediocre. This is downright BAD. My mom got a pedicure with Kristy and said she was great. So if you are going to come here, ask for Kristy! read more

Honestly I'm frustrated with this place because of what I am currently dealing with right now. I went with Christy for my pedicures. I loved her because of how nice she did my toes and how nice she massaged my legs. The next time I went with her, I noticed discoloration in my left big toe. I thought it was from the nail polish before but no, it was hurting as she was cleaning my nail. I took off paint, looked inside my toenail, did some research and I had got fungus in my toenail. She lifted my toenail from my toenail bed. Now I have a toenail fungus and have been very hesitant with the medication the doctor gave me due to it being bad for liver and all these bad side effects. Medication is Terbinafine. I'm stressed out because of this. I am mainly worried about taking this medication because I don't want anything to happen to me - death, the bad side effects that can be permanent since I have kids. I am never coming here again and I know it can happen anywhere but now I am scared for anyone to even touch my feet. I have to make sure their supplies is clean and to remind them to be gentle since I had a bad experience when I shouldn't. When this should be in y'all's minds to begin with, however please be careful with your customers and how you clean their toes and if you're barely or not doing it, please sanitize tools. read more
