Athenian Candle Company has been my go to for various needs for at least 10 years if not longer. They are a local business in Greektown with lots of knowledge and the most sincere customer service team. Sometimes I go there with a purpose, like, I need a St Francis and a St Anthony candle, or maybe I need some Morocco oil. Other times I am a complete disaster and I go in and they ask If I need any help, to which I say yes, and tell them my issue. The staff always knows exactly what I need and is more than willing to help. Oftentimes they will offer you a blessing at checkout - Say yes and accept with gratitude. The blessing will bring you goodness and peace and probably whatever else you need. At the beginning of the Athenian Candles gives out catalogues and Christian calendars with purchase. Both are wonderful gifts. The catalogue has a lot of information about products you may not have been aware of. Parking right in front can be tough; it is Greektown. if you go a block or two away you will find likely a free spot. read more

This was a neat little place that we stumbled into by mistake. They have a candle for EVERYTHING. Every saint, every holiday. If you need good luck, purity, to be rid of bad things, to make money. You name it, they have a candle for it. There are aisles of candles of all different colors and sizes, as well as candle accessories like snuffers and matches and the like. There's also a section of cleaning products to cleanse the home, and a little section of books. I was pleasantly surprised that I own a few. It caters to a predominantly Christian clientele, as made evident by all the saints. That said, there are a few questionably pagan/hoodoo items that I was surprised to find there. To each their own. What I didn't like was the staff. They were really kind of snotty and rude, like if they didn't already know you they couldn't be bothered. Need 4 foot alter candles for a newly installed art piece? They have 'em. Need a favor from a random saint? They have 'em. Need some votives for those empty holders? They have 'em. Need to some incense to ward of evil? It is here. Need a can of "Evil Go Away" to spray on your mean boss? Yep, that too. The store has kind of a creepy smell to it, probably from all those herbs and scented things blending in the air and they have a lot of serious religious articles for places of worship but they also have some crazy stuff like sprays to bring love into your life, to get evil out of your life and to bring in a cash windfall. Do I think they work? Still waiting for the love of my life to drop in with a boatload of cash while warding off evil but who am I to judge? read more

Came in here because honestly I felt like it was meant for me. Beyond reasonably priced and so. many. items. The young lady there was BEYOND sweet and helpful like no other, definitely was needed with the amount of things they have. It was so overwhelming but in the best way possible! It's bittersweet because this entire time this gem has been under my nose but thankful I've found it today. I spent a good 2 hours here mindlessly and was still welcomed. I hadn't been here since I had left the city of Chicago so I was delighted to find that the staff here remembered me, treated me like family and made me feel completely comfortable as I wandered around their store mesmerized by all their Choices! There are washes here, fresh herbs, charms, religious items, a huge selection of candles, incense, black salt, magnetic sand, lodestones....candle holders, glitter and essential oils here. You will definitely find anything you desire from traditional church candles, to fixed candles and curios from different belief systems and the staff here is knowledgeable and eager to help you find anything your heart desires. They even have some crystals and stones here too so if you wish to make your own special charm bag you have all the tools and items to create anything you wish. You can buy frankincense tears, copal and myrrh and burn these beautiful fragrances on charcoal briquettes. I used to live a few blocks away from this particular candle shop and I must have shopped here as much as three times a week because I love the beauty of candlelight and the healing, pure vibes of love that this particular candle shop carries. There is definitely an energy of joy here and that's extremely important especially if you're going to create a feeling of sanctity and safety and well being in your home. I will definitely be returning here much more often and I absolutely loved my shopping experience this early afternoon especially since everyone remembered me and seemed genuinely interested in my return visit. Looking for Nag Champa-scented bar soap? Here it is. I think this place could be classified as a Greek botanica? Not sure. I'll call it a straight-faced occultist's/witch's supply store. And it's open to the public! Honestly shocked this place only has a half-dozen reviews. Other reviews give a good description of the merchandise. Last visit I saw a local tough guy STOCKING UP on "Contra la ley" votive candles. This place is no joke. Definitely worth checking out after your next Greektown brunch outing. read more

My Grandma always tells me I'm her favorite grandchild when I buy her holy water from here. But I just have to say... I was kind of annoyed at having to dart in the rain to the nearest cash machine to pay for it the last time I came in. This $20 minimum charge policy is not awesome in a store that has so much merchandise far below that price. read more

Candles in all shapes and colors, and for all purposes (petitioning for intercession from your patron saint, protection from enemies, luck in the lottery) are made in house. Shelves behind the counter hold containers filled with herbs sold by weight. The women who work here are very knowledgeable, and can advise you how to resolve any dilemma you may have. Isn't what it used to be when I was a kid. I'm Greek Orthodox and the religious items they carry for the Greek Orthodox people and/or Christian people are limited. It's a mix of some Greek icons , evil eyes and then Indian incense and other more mystical items. If your looking for Christian or Greek Orthodox items you'd be disappointed but if your interested in checking out a mix of different spiritual supplies come check it out! read more

Athenian Candle Company is a wonderful throwback to another era. Look in the back room and you will see employees making candles. Long live the independent business. Meanwhile, wander around the store....Do you need incense? a Crucifix? A book that lists lucky numbers? A spray that will keep bad folk away from your house? Some hair dye? Various icons? Beeswax candles? This is your place. If you need some Christian stuff or some crazy superstitious ju ju (was I being redundant?) then this is your place. I usually get some lovely frankincense here (my Catholic upbringing precedes me) as well as the charcoal needed to burn it. Employees are friendly and make you feel comfortable as you browse. This is an interesting store for people of a variety of faiths, and/or the respectfully curious. read more

Really like this store.. however; bought a spiritual XXX candle that keeps going out. This candle will barely catch a flame. It was on a table 2 for 10.95$. I'm curious as to if these two candles keep losing the flame because they were old or poorly crafted. Not sure which but I'm throwing them in the garbage and will make another attempt. I will order the new ones direct from the manufacturer. Otherwise, I'm satisfied with the store, their selections, and their assistance in what I needed. Every time I come in here someone makes sure I can find what I'm looking for! I've never really needed much help, but when I overhear the employees talking to other customers they really seem to know what they're talking about. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a christian store, but it has everything I need for my Pagan ways! VERY inexpensive and has a very nice vibe. Go check it out! read more

Biked over and got my St. Christopher and St. Francis medals, no sweat, including chains. There were three people working behind the counter and at least two on the floor and in back. All very nice, though that may have been a little pre-closing giddiness. In addition to all the candles and medals, there are crucifixes galore and statuary, incense, etc. It's got more of a novelty than pious feel. I mean, I don't think the cardinal shops here, or whatever the equivalent is in the Greek Orthodox church. If you're in Greektown, definitely worth a visit while you contemplate where to stop for tzatziki. read more

Pretty cool shop with all kinds of interesting things pertaining to the spiritual side of things. I wouldn't really categorize this as a christian store.. it seemed more... well... the words that come to mind would be-and this is all in a nice way... hocus pocus-y, spiritual but not exclusively christian ... and dare I say this would be a helpful store if you practice witchcraft or for those that are superstitious minded. I would have stayed longer to look around more but I was short on time. I came here for holy water and picked up a couple of candles I will burn in private ;-) and a potion. Oh this potion better not be full of lies saleslady. This shit better work!!! Good thing it was all cheap if it doesn't. I'll be updating this review of course. I am indeed a fan of Athenian Candle. This is a store for hoodoo, folk magic, lucky number and dream books, herbs, talismans and candles for a wide variety of purposes. If you spend more than $10 they give you the option to receive a "blessing" which smells very nice. They have a surprising assortment of magical herbs, washes and sprays, but a lot of the washes, though they smell nice, don't look 100% legit; more like fragrance and water. The reason why the store does not receive 5 stars from me is the parking situation (which is rough in general in Greektown) which puts time pressure on a visit here, and they sell candles with metal wicks, which are known to produce toxins. Double check the candles you purchase here and ensure you don't bring home metal wicked candles. Also, they do not accept credit cards for purchases under $20, an unreasonably high limit in my humble opinion. Stop in if you can! read more

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!!! For four years I have been running around Chicago getting "side eyed" looks in all the Hispanic Botanica's! A little of this a little of that! I am coming from the east coast. When I walked into this store thinking okay at least I can get some incense and a few candles! PRAISE GOD AND THE LWAS!! It had everything I was looking for and more! I love this place!!! I do not care if they smile or not! I love them! they are awesome! they speak English!! of course they have the Greek Ego goin but hell WHY NOT?
