The Athenian Grill is small but flavor packed. We were greeted at the counter as soon as we walked in by a super helpful young man. He was courteous, knowledgeable and welcoming! While we were waiting there was a steady stream of customers picking up their online orders. The staff was fast and efficient. There are no tables downstairs, but there are a few tables in a dining area upstairs. Everything was clean and bright! My husband ordered the Greek beef stew (Kokinisto) the beef was so tender you could break it apart with a plastic fork and swimming in a delicious red sauce. He chose lemon garlic potatoes and pita bread as his sides both were excellent! My son had the Avgolemono soup (a traditional Greek soup with chicken broth Arborio rice, egg, lemon and chicken) which he loved and an order of freshly made pita. I had the children's portion of Chicken Santorini in a sundried tomato mushroom sauce which was outstanding. The chicken was so tender that again it could be cut with a plastic fork and the sauce was heavenly. I had the roasted vegetables as my side to balance the calories from the rich sauce. Full disclosure, as always: this was delivery/doordash. And that jacked the price up, which is not Athenian's fault. It also almost always affects the food, but overall I would call this 5/5 Greek. And it did arrive fast even after we ordered past 9 PM! I got the chicken gyro, extra meat. Chicken was juicy and moist. They did indeed give me a LOT of it. It was bursting out of the pita. Tons of fresh veggies included. The fries were crispy, could maybe have used a little more seasoning. Non-doordash without extra meat, is 11 dollars. You can get a combo with a side and a drink for 15 dollars (again, non DoorDash). My colleague got a gyro bowl, which he enjoyed. They allow you to build your own bowl, choosing grain or green, up to two dips, a protein, toppings, and dressing. Athena is the typical Greek restaurant (no insult meant by that). Usual suspects of spanakopitakia, falafel, Greek sausage, Greek salads, moussaka, chicken Santorini. They also have entrees like pastitsio, meatballs, grilled branzino, chicken Santorini, grilled lamb chops. They offer pasta and several other types of sandwiches. We went here years ago and absolutely loved the food. We happen to be passing recently and decided to order food to go. Quality was just as amazing as before. Everything is super fresh and delicious. We ordered two of the regular gyros that have a combination of lamb and beef, a Greek garden salad, and a side of hummus. Last time I had the lamb gyro and I will say that I prefer the lamb beef gyro because it has a better texture, in my opinion. The hummus is good and comes with pita. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Definitely give this place a try if you like Greek food and are looking for a fresh meal! The location is easy to miss, it's in an alley behind the laundromat, in a nondescript two-story building, with one distinctive characteristic, a bright canary yellow door. Very limited parking, I was lucky to get one of the two parking spaces in front of the building. I read the menu before I visited this restaurant, and knew what I was going to order, Gyro Rice Bowl with two sides. I chose traditional gyro meat, roasted lemon potatoes, and Greek style green beans, and I was NOT DISAPPOINTED! The meat was so fresh and tender, the rice cooked just right, the green beans needed only a little salt & pepper, the roasted lemon potatoes reminded me of when my grandmother used to make them. So delicious! I have Greek heritage and can honestly say this food truly is authentic. I have not found any authentic delicious Greek restaurant for over ten years, and that one happens to be halfway across the country. The staff were kind, pleasant and knowledgeable. So when we do eat out these days, , I choose thoughtfully and with both quality and price in mind. I need to share that I am a born and raised Appalachian mountain girl that grew up on amazing southern comfort food. But lately, I have been trying to eat healthier in both food choices and portion sizes. But we need not go too far with that healthy stuff-- I mean even my healthier choices have got to be both delicious and filling. And just like everyone else these days, I am looking for value for our money spent. Well, Athenian Grill checked all those boxes for us. Of course, just having healthier Mediterranean/Greek food choices is a good thing, and they do have LOTS of choices of all the things we love about Greek food. But a lot of choices doing mean much if the food doesn't taste delicious -- and I'm happy to report that at Athenian Grill- It does! But can we talk value for your dollars? Athenian Grill has it going on in that respect as well. For instance, I ordered the kids size gyro bowl - which is everything Gyro you love without the bread. With this choice, You have the option of Athenian, chicken or classic gyro meat. You also have a choice of sides. Of course, I chose the lemon potatoes. (Who says you can't have meat and potatoes on a Mediterranean menu).... So how was it? -- well the food was delivered to our house quickly and the portion size was fantastic. Even though my choice was a "kids" portion - I had enough to eat for lunch and then re-heat and finish it for dinner-- and it was delicious both times. So I personally got TWO meals from the very affordable price of one kid's meal item! (I know, right?!) The only criticism I have is that the lemony potatoes weren't really- lemony. However, they were very good and the overall taste of everything else and overall value made up for that. So -- bottom line- I can recommend Athenian Grill with no hesitation for fast American Greek food that won't break the bank. I feel good about recommending it to you and your family and I feel good that I made a wise and delicious choice for me and mine. To sum this experience up in one word: YUM! I look forward to trying the other food but baklava was delicious. The young man who waited on me was super friendly and if I had more funds I would've spent far too much just on sweets due to his description of the orange cake. Greek salad was presented nicely and had fresh veggies but the dressing was fair and slightly bitter. Salad needed salt. Nice chucks of feta but that was very bland for feta. The gyro on a pita was served with lettuce and a lot of it. After pulling away and getting to the meat it was juicy which comes from soaking in a pot like a cafeteria. Friends and I ordered from Uber Eats, and the portion sizes were huge, more than double the last time I tried Athenian Grill in-person (which is usually not the case with third party ordering). Some of the food like the chicken is still on the bland side, and I still much rather prefer Nefertiti or Sahara, but Athenian Grill is open later, and more conveniently located. This is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in Lexington. Period. Everything is reasonably priced, the wait is never prohibitive, and the staff is always remarkably kind and awesome. If you've never been before you should probably start with the gyro. It's a classic for a reason. All of the sides are very good but you just can't beat those perfectly crisp french fries. Athenian probably has some of the best fries in town. I'm also a big fan of the lemon potatoes! I've eaten here so many times, but to be perfectly frank I've never been to the upstairs dining room. Was checking out UK today and decided to have lunch at Athenian Grill. While it is a tiny place the food was delicious. All four of us had the classic gyro. The pita was warm, the gyro meet was flavorful, the tomato was ripe and there was plenty of tatziki sauce on the side. We shared an order of grape leaves that were good. Not what I expected, or was wanting. First, if you are in Lexington and want Greek food then you need to go to Sarhara Grill. If you have been to Sarhara and are looking to fill your fix while they are in Greece, this is not the place. The chicken was meh, not much flavor. The hummus was meh, and a wired consistency. The white sauce was taste less. The salad was terrible. Basically just a little lettuce and a tiny speck of dressing that is not even good. I chose the chicken because the rest of the meats looked dry and not good. At Sarhara you get a large plate of food for a very good price, here i got a gyro with a salad that was not worth eating and it was $12. Worst Greek food I have had. The food was good, but the service was mindblowingly bad. In August of 2023 I visited Athenian Grill on recommendation from online reviews. When I arrived, I asked my server for advice on what to order due to a specific, restrictive diet that I was on and was met with a sarcastic reply meant to make me feel like I was dumb for asking. I took a seat outside. While waiting for the food to arrive after ordering, she approached me and accused me of "snatching" silverware out of her hand. This random confrontation from her was not in an inconspicuous tone -- it appeared to me that she was trying to make a scene, despite the fact that there were plenty of customers around trying to enjoy their meal. I noticed that my eyes kept darting to the side to see the disturbed expressions of other patrons. I did not know then, and still do not know, what she was talking about. I said as much then, in an apologetic tone, which was enough to call her off, so she went back to work. After the meal (again, food was fine), I went to her and politely asked if she would be willing to talk with me about what happened between us. I did not understand why she seemed to be extremely upset with me, and I don't want to be on bad terms with anybody -- not even a stranger. We walked out of the restaurant and met maybe 10 feet from the door, beside the street. We agreed that there was some kind of misunderstanding, and she apologized. I verbally accepted her apology, which (surprise!) sent her off into a total rage. My bad for trying to de-escalate the situation that she created. She broke out into a full-blown meltdown. She kept loudly requesting for her fellow employees to "hold her back". She angrily yanked open the front door of the restaurant and entered. Like I said, a total meltdown. After watching her disappear into the building while continuing her bizarre tantrum, it was clear she could not be reasoned with. So, I decided it was time to leave. I took a moment to collect myself, and started to head toward my car, which required me to go behind the restaurant and cross some tracks. I rounded the restaurant's corner, and there she was on the phone. She had decided to walk out on her shift to make a phone call to someone and was shouting and crying on the phone about my "entitlement" and how someone had better hold her back. She took my sudden appearance as me trying to confront her or something, even though I was taking the only reasonable path to my car. She started shouting at me that I was not welcome there, alternating between that and "have a nice day." I have never witnessed such unhinged behavior from someone in public *at work*. Her behavior was both confusing and appalling. To call it unprofessional is beyond obvious. Because of the insane (sorry, it's true) meltdown that she had *at work*, *in front of customers* for no reason that I can discern, the venue's ambiance was completely destroyed, and I can confidently say that she ruined the evening of anyone there that was in her presence. If I were her manager, I'd probably be too scared to fire her, but there are a litany of excellent reasons to do so. If I ever find out she is no longer with the restaurant, I'd consider coming back. Whether that happens or not, this was the most unpleasant dining experience of my entire life. read more

I was driving back to Louisville and on my way out of a subdivision I saw this. We are living in a COVID-19 world so I stayed in my car, looked over the online menu and called it in. The lady came out to my car for me to pay by credit card and brought out my drink during this. I ordered a traditional gyro, lemon potatoes and roasted videos. Everything was excellent! Hard to find; worth the effort. Fresh, yummy Greek food served up by friendly folks. Cute space hidden away off the main road in Chevy Chase. Good number of veggie options. Plastic utensils, wrapped in plastic, non-recyclable food containers, plastic bags, and no fountain drink so no option to fill your own. I've been to two locations. My first time was the one off of Richmond Rd. and really enjoyed the food and overall experience there. Size was very nice and spacious. Unfortunately, I've read that that location is now closed for private events/catering. Went today to the event off of Ashland. Very small even with upstairs area. We had a party if three and had to go upstairs to find a larger table. Food selection looked good and tasted good, but I was not impressed with the lady that took our order. She seemed preoccupied with something else and even though there wasn't a line she made us wait to order and wasn't very friendly. I'm assuming this location is better for carry out. I evened bussed our table because she seemed very unhappy to have to climb the steps to bring our dishes. read more

I found this place on Google and decided to give it a try, and I'd absolutely recommend it. It's a little hard to find, and the store and parking lot is small, but the women at the counter and the two cooks are really nice and it has a great vibe to it. The parking sucked. They had only 2 spots reserved. You need to drive into a narrow space to find this place. I ordered an Athenian Lamb gyro(they call it Yeeros here) which was yummy.
