What a fortunate blunder! I stopped by Nefertiti, and I'm so glad I did. The place is quite understated, simple, but I figured I'd give it a shot since it was past lunch. The food was made to order and arrived in under 10 minutes. I opted for the #1 platter with beef and lamb skewers. The entrée was exactly what I expected: skewers served over a bed of rice. I was absolutely thrilled with the meal. First off, the meat was incredibly tender, juicy, and flavorful. I devoured it so quickly that I truly believe how good the food is--simply amazing. The lentil soup and hummus were equally delightful. The lentil soup was definitely one of the best I've ever tasted. Well, this was my lucky day discovering such a wonderful restaurant. One of the best gyros in town. The place isn't much, located in a run down strip mall, it's a tile floor, plain little shop. But the staff is always welcoming and friendly. They seem to be enjoying themselves even in busy lunch rushes. Pro tip, go about 4:30. No waiting. It may not look like much from the outside but it's definitely worth going in. Once inside, it's clean and inviting. My husband and I were greeted by a big smile and hello by a friendly guy. We explained this was our first time and didn't know what to order. I told him to order for me. He asked a couple questions and my husband decided to get the same thing. When our food arrived, we could not believe the amount of food that was on the plate!!! The food was flavorful and left us wishing we could finish it all. Modest place but clean and the food is fantastic! Let me precede this by saying I eat Mediterranean a LOT! The lentil soup was good even though a bit bland for my preference and the falafel was good too, but the chicken shawarma DEFINITELY stole the show. They use a mix of dark and white Chicken so they can give it a nice char without it over drying. The seasoning was great and the garlic sauce was fantastic with it. I liked the pickled onions with sumac and the julienned pickles too. I heat the hot sauce is really good, but I didn't try it. The rice was really good too. I definitely recommend! I gave it multiple chances over the last couple of years, but I don't like it anymore and could not recommend it. Last week I came in and got the ultimate shawarma sandwich platter. They give you a lot of food, but the meat is very low quality. The beef shawarma is kinda funky and the chicken is just not really good. I could not even eat the leftovers the next day because it smelled so bad. I really want to like this place, I don't know what happened since they opened. On the plus side, the sides are okay. This place was ranked highly on yelp when we were looking, and yelp doesn't disappoint. We had just spent a day hiking Red River Gorge and our large group placed a large dine in order during the bustling dinner rush. Most people seemed to order takeout, but the decor reminded us of our travels to the Middle East and we enjoyed that. The decor is nothing fancy, but the inside of the restaurant could easily be in Turkey, Israel, Palestine, etc. we ordered multiple items and everyone loved all they tried. Passing through Lexington in January 2, not knowing what would be open for lunch, we decided to try Nefertiti. We rarely get to the east side of Lexington when we're passing though, so we decided to be adventurous and check the place out. I remembered from my college days in Lexington back in the late 1990s that the Winchester Road area was somewhat sketchy, so I didn't know what to expect. But whatever, we went for it. Nefertiti is located in a strip mall in a still-somewhat-sketchy area around the Winchester Road -- New Circle Road intersection. There were several people who seemed to be homeless hanging around the front entrance, and the building itself seemed a little run down. But often you find culinary gems in precisely this type of environment. And a gem it was! I ordered a beef shawarma sandwich, and my wife had a falafel sandwich. We ordered at the counter and took a seat to wait. They were ready in about five minutes, hot and looking delicious. I tasted the falafel sandwich and think it was really tasty, but my own beef shawarma sandwich was awesome. I ate all mine and was absolutely stuffed, but my wife opted to bring half of hers home. So, for the price, you get a really good amount of food. The physical space could use a little updating, and restrooms could use a bit of cleaning. But I'm general it's a perfectly fine place to sit and have lunch. The guys behind the counter were pleasant, smiling the whole time. Will I go back? Who knows -- as I said, we're almost never on that side of town when we pass through. But if I lived in Lexington, I could see this being the place where I'd go to get my shawarma fix when I needed it. If you haven't been, check it out! read more
