Two and a half stars. I always regret cheating on Plaka Grill. Athens takes oily pita bread to a whole new level: supple and decadent while fresh, stiff and greasy as leftovers. Hummus and chicken avgolemono were just okay. Baklava was a skip for me: the abundance of honey weighed down the flaky pastry layers and there was no structural balance to the crushed pistachio layer. PATHETIC!! $13 for a pathetic so-called Souvlaki. It had cheap white onions instead of red onions, tons of tasteless iceberg lettuce, green tomatoes and some kind of "special sauce". It was nothing like the many Souvlakis I very often ate in Greece when I lived there for years. I asked them to exchange their "special sauce" for the more traditional Tsatsiki sauce and though they had some they refused. I'll never go back to this place. At least I got my money back after threatening to throw my Souvlaki against their wall. As another reviewer said the old guy at the register was very disagreeable. I've met the owner in the past and he is very nice, but this experience has forever put me off this declining Greek restaurant. BTW, Athens Grill there is no lettuce in a Greek salad, and most certainly not supposed to be 90% iceberg lettuce. This totally ruins any flavor of the Feta cheese. read more

Unfortunately, two years after Covid, Athens Grill is now very mediocre. I can understand raising prices slightly, but he quality has suffered greatly. I just had Moussaka tonight. I gave it the benefit of the doubt after trying it a couple months ago. Don't even use the word "authentic". Mostly a mass of dry flour "baked" thick bechamel "sauce", 2-3 small pieces of eggplant with a few clumps of ground beef tossed in and the rest is potato. Last time I tried my go-to shrimp souvlaki, the platter had 6 miniscule and over-cooked dry shrimp. Not at all what the restaurant was a couple of years ago. Dmitri is never there anymore, I hope he is OK, but his absence may be the unfortunate death knell for this once thriving neighborhood restaurant. read more

Grew up in the area and whenever I come home Athens grill is a must. Have never had a bad meal there. The service is always friendly and I've tried multiple things on the menu and all are delicious even through my favorite is the gyro platter. Will continue to return time and time again. read more

The food here was just ok. I ordered the lamb souvlaki platter, which includes a heaping pile of salad, fries, and pita, and one small skewer of lamb kebab. The lamb kebab was actually pretty good, I just wish there was more of it and less of everything else (see photo). For dessert we got the peach pastry, which looks delicious but was kind of average (see photo). The reason for knocking this review down from 3 to 2 stars is the owner's attitude. My friends and I bought our meals, and sat and talked for a bit afterwards. At some point the owner comes out and asks us if we need anything else. Then he tells us he needs this table - very poor taste for any restaurant owner. Having this one table is worth losing customers? You can have it. 2 stars. read more

Do I really need to add anything more to the long history of excellent reviews? This place is a staple of Montgomery Village,an institution, and we MOCO-ites are so fortunate to have it with us. Everything is delicious, my personal favorite being the pork or chicken. Portions are super generous. I would add that I've heard complaints about too much dill on the fries but I've never experienced this and I'm sure they would be happy to cut back on it if you ask. This is "as good as it gets" for greek food at this price range. read more

Good greek food. This little restaurant offers a large variety of Greek dishes and they are packed full of flavor. The service is very friendly and the restaurant is clean and welcoming. The gyro and chicken souvlaki platters are favorites in my family. I have also tried the shrimp souvlaki and was not a fan. The shrimp are not deveined and that is the end point for me. Outside of the shrimp souvlaki dish, I would recommend this restaurant to my fellow Yelpers. Also, the chicken avgolemono soup is pretty good here. read more

Spanakopita was old. Took a very long time to get a Gyro and a Pork Souvlaki and it was very expensive. $40 for these 3 items. Dining area was empty and not very clean. They did have a sign for help needed so this could the reason. read more

Wish I could give zero stars. The food was cold and mediocre, portions are small. Owners are extremely rude and do not follow Covid protocols, masks were there for show only. A 4% credit card charge gets added to all orders, debit was supposed to be charge free, except it really was not. $43 for two lunch platters with extra pita ($2.99) which they forgot to put in the order anyways. You know when you walk into a place and think "what the hell am I doing here?" I had one of those moments, albeit for a brief amount of time, today when I walked into the Athens Grill. The place is a small place, but has been around forever, which kind of showed on the inside. The menu is huge, and has a ton of the traditional Greek dishes I was hoping for. Since it was lunchtime, I ordered a gyro platter... All I can say is DELICIOUS. I might have dreams about the succulent meat and the perfectly made tzatziki sauce. The moral of the story is "don't judge a book by its cover". Oh, and also, come eat here immediately! read more

Wow! We had a great experience here. In particular there was an eggplant dish that just blew us away. The eggplant was devilishly thinly sliced and delicately breaded and fried. All of my kids loved the food here, and they are picky eaters. My wife and I also loved our dishes. She had chicken souvlaki and I had gyro. Both were sooo good. We also had a taramasalata which went over very well! The owner is very friendly, and he always take time for a little chatter with each of his customers. The first time we came here, we ordered take and he told me if we don't love it, come back in the future and he would make it right. Of course, that didn't need to happen because he was right about is food. Although, I must say, you should not get take out from here, because being able to eat the food fresh right as it is prepared is the way to go. You won't be dissappointed in this wonderful place. Although I don't speak Greek, this place will make you say: Efharisto (I would put the meaning here, but you'll remember it better if you look it up on The Google). The restaurant is in a nice strip mall. I had the gyro and my hubby had the seafood special and my kid had the chicken kabob. All 3 were delicious. Huge portions. Lemme start by saying that I understand that it's a small business, covid, yada yada, but here's how it all went down. This place has no idea how to handle or take catering orders. I stood with 4-5 others in line while some dude wearing a vineyard vines tee and his apparent daughter were discussing a catering order in great detail. After about 25 minutes of ignoring those waiting to place/pickup orders, they finally finished their catering discussion and now the 4-5 people in line was now 10-15, and extended outside the door. Wait, Vinyard Vines dude isn't done yet, he now decides he wants to order dinner on top of the $300 catering order he placed for 2 weeks from now. I have all the deets of his event now too. Maybe I'll show up and crash that joint. Finally I get to the front, not to order, but to pickup an order I called in almost an hour prior now. You can probably imagine what my food tasted like, terrible.
