Let me start by saying that the food is very very good here. It's hot and yummy, BUT (and yes it's a big bold capital but) we waited an hour and 25 mins for our food. The gentleman at the register is warm and warned us that it would be a wait, but nearly an hour and half. I had even mentally prepared myself for a wait, but everyone in my party of 3 was miserable by the time we were served. It's in an ordinary strip mall and the restaurant has the typical blue and white decorations, photos of Greece, etc. Service was a little slow, maybe because if couldn't make up my mind. The person who took my order steered me towards the beef souvlaki platter which is a beef kebab, Greek Salad and I requested fries (can also get rice or double salad), pita bread and I had a side of tzatziki. The beef was really good. I'm hesitant to get beef at times because it's so sad when it's yucky. It was tender and flavorful and freshly grilled. The tzatziki was delicious. Athens Grill has been a local gem in the Gaithersburg area. I placed carry out over the phone and came by the restaurant to pick up my food. I ordered (2) chicken breast platters which comes with salad, choice of rice or fries, chicken breast, feta cheese, greek dressing and pita bread. They grill the chicken fresh and season it with plenty of rosemary and other special seasonings giving it a burst of flavor. The pita bread is the most delicious and flavorful I've had versus anywhere else! The restaurant was packed on a Monday during lunch (says a lot about the food!) I came to the counter and the owner greeted me - he knew right away I was there for the carryout and make sure to bring cash to avoid the credit card fees. A lot of local shops have been implementing them to survive the COVID stress that's been placed on a lot of small businesses. Also, the food is enough for lunch AND dinner. My go to Greek restaurant in Gaithersburg. Love the souvlaki, humus and Greek Salad. I usually get take out so I have no idea what the noise level is like when it is busy. Food: After tasting MANY other places' gyros (whether wraps or platters), I would still rank this as my favorite. There is something about ingredients/seasoning, texture and well honestly, they put a lot of it! Lol. I also tried the Hermes wings... I don't recommend this. Went to this place and it was a great decision. I went there with my friends and we all got the same thing. The gyro and let me tell you... it was FAT and great! Will never go back. Tried a couple times. Second time wanted to add chicken to my salad. Asked about adding a leg quarter which was on the menu. Was told they didn't have that but offered me a chicken skewer. It was small and dry and they charged me $11 for one skewer and a half filled container which was supposed to be a horiataki salad so I won't be going back. Delicious and fresh food. Cooked to order. Loved the friendly and great customer service. Cooking on real hardwood charcoal it gives an amazing flavor to the food. If you are ordering in I will recommend to call ahead and placed your order if you are in a hurry, since they are the only Greek restaurant that cooks with charcoal they are always very busy. The salmon dinner and salad are delicious, we highly recomm them. Also the peach Melba it's their specialty and out of this world. If you are a vegetarian you should try the Iman (stuff eggplant) stuffed grape leaves, zucchini, onion rings, hummus and their famous salads. The portions are huge. This place is great. I have been coming here for 15 years and it is always good. The trick is an owner who takes pride in his food. You get excellently flavored food, large portions, and everything is made to order. You may wait a bit on a busy day, but it is worth it. The meat is tender, the fries are crisp, and your platter is loaded with plenty of greek salad heaping with feta cheese. Wow. I've mostly gotten the platters, but occasionally try the seafood and soups. All good. I agree that the gyro platter is very good. I sat and stared at the screen for a solid 5 minutes trying to decide whether to go with 3 or 4 stars. I've been eating at this place literally my entire life so it has nostalgia working in its favor. Athen's Grill is family owned and the same guy manning the counter in 1990 is still executing orders today, I like that. Some of the menu highlights for me are the big fat gyro (french fries on it), the chicken picnic meal, the green beans (trust me, they are fire), the fried zucchini appetizer, grilled pita bread with hummus (unique hummus, some of the best I've ever had), and the lamb burger (bursting with flavor). The Greek salads are great but get the dressing on the side. They can also go a little too heavy on the onions so just be prepared for that. The reason I was in between 3 and 4 stars is that my last couple experiences weren't up to par with how I remembered the food. It may have just had a couple of off nights. I will update again after my next visit. Overall I've always liked this place but with Plaka Grill and Big Greek Cafe on the map it's less appealing than it was 20 years ago. read more

I'm personally not coming back here because of the pricing. I ordered online and there were no prices on the website's menu. I ordered two veggie kabobs and an order of fries. Being familiar with the area and the prices at similar restaurants, I figured it would be around $30. When I picked up the order, the attendant did not give me the price, but just asked me for my card. When I looked at the receipt, I had total sticker shock-- $42! For two kebabs and an order of fries that I picked up myself. One of the "fees" listed was a 4 percent fee for using my credit card. What?! This is legal in Maryland, but it's illegal in many other states because it's such a crappy ploy. So anyway, yeah-- I'm not made of money, so I'm not coming back here. Me and my family have been going to this place for yearsss. Never have been disappointed with the quality of food or the service. We decided to go last night since we heard they were back open after being closed for renovations. I was so disappointed in the food. The chicken breast were under seasoned and way smaller cubes than they used to have. The dressing for the salad lacked their usual athentic greek flavor as well. It tasted just like a bunch of oil. Authentic, delicious, and great portions. The service is always friendly! The Gyros are GOOD, not the best but all of the platters/entres are incredible! Athens grill was one of the worst restaurants we have eaten at in a very long time! You have to be weary of an establishment that does not post their prices on line. And since when do you have to pay an extra $1.50 to have tzatziki with your lamb kabob? And speaking of the lamb kabob for $26.00 you get one small skewer of lamb AND NO TZATZIKI! And to top it all off my wife spent the night in the bathroom.
