I ordered a French dip sandwich and knew immediately the meat wasn't fresh. Even before opening the box I could smell it. I was hoping I was wrong and reluctantly tried some. Athens Grill is a tiny, family run restaurant. I found it on Yelp as I drove through Lowell hungry. This restaurant has some of the charm you might expect from a family place (kid art and photos on the walls), but lacked a hospitable feeling, at least during my visit. I did not feel particularly welcomed. The Athens Grill has an extensive menu that includes some Greek items and a lot of diner fare. I ordered a Reuben Deluxe, which came with French Fries and a choice of Navy Bean or Lemon Rice soup. I chose Navy Bean. The price was reasonable, at $7.75 (including tax). All of the food was acceptable, and the portions generous, but nothing was great enough to compensate for the lack of warmth. read more

When we used to live in the area, about 8 year's ago this place was really good. Returned to live in a town nearby and was anxious to eat here again. Let down! The chicken strips were smaller the lemon rice soup wasn't the same, and the pop I ordered had a strange aftertaste. The prices went up but the quality went down. The service was friendly, though. Guess it's true what they say, "you can never go back". No, I won't be going back, not worth the 45 minute drive. read more

This little dive has some good grub! Hubs was in the mood for some Greek food, & we found Athens Grill on Yelp. Great reviews, so we gave it a try. The place is tiny, but they managed to get two cafe tables & about 20 counter seats around the perimeter of the front of the restaurant. We ordered a gyro deluxe (deluxe includes a cup of soup & fries), & a grilled cheese & bacon deluxe. Hubs had the beef veg soup, & I had the lemon rice soup. Both were excellent! The gyro was huge! It was loaded with juicy gyro meat, tomato, onions, feta, & the Z sauce, & was on a warm, soft pita wrap. It was too fat to wrap until he ate some of the meat with his fork. He loved it! My sandwich was perfectly cheesy & grilled just right. The fries were hot & yummy. They do a killer takeout business. The phone rang constantly with orders & they had a constant stream of walk-ins for take out. The owners were very concerned that we were happy & thanked us for stopping in for dinner. read more

The gyro is by far the best thing to order on the menu be sure to order an extra pita your able to get two full sandwitches out of the deluxe witch comes with fries and soup as well. The service is the only thing that keeps me away from picking up my food i always send someone else in the family to do the task because of the way the wife seems to treat people she is the worse with not even a smile or thank you come again. I never yelp anything ever but felt compelled to for Athens... How is this place there I stop in for lunch and was a bit busy.. So had to wait inside for my order started looking around and it is filthy inside.. I was looking at the prep table and the grill and the soda machine and how has this placed not been shut down... I'm sorry but it is... I saw the cook take toast out of the toaster and wipe something off it with her shirt. I ordered the ribeye steak sandwich and couldn't finish it it was so fatty.. I decided to try this place out since I have yet to find a place with a good italian beef sandwich. The sandwich was good, however the customer service was terrible. The woman working there belittled one of her employees right in front of me because he forgot to put cheese on my fries so she had to get me a cheese cup. Saying things like "he screwed that up too!" Never once did anyone try to small talk with me or make any conversation. On top of that i get home to find half of my order isnt even there. So i decided to drive back up there and she got very defensive and rude towards me. I was told that i cancelled that off my order and it was crossed off when i never cancelled anything. She starting raising her voice at me and after throwing all the missing items in a bag she slammed it down on the counter and said "here!" Which was all very un called for and unprofessional. Food is usually decent. Beware if you are in there and plan on putting a tip in the tip jar....you think it's going to the young staff working hard behind the counter but in reality it's going to the owners to pay their daughters college tuition. I was told this by the owner when she saw me put $5 in it. Now I make sure I hand the tip to the employee personally and tell them that's it's for them NOT the owners. I think that is very shady and misleading of the owners to do that. read more

This tiny little place doesn't look like much but the food is great. For well under $10 you can get stuffed silly with all sorts of grill fare. I usually get the Gyro/Beef combo, which comes with fries and a delicious soup. They are fast and a good value. read more

I called to order for carry out. The woman who answered was extremely rude, and short. Working in the food industry, no matter how busy you are, you TRY to be polite and give the best customer service. Asked a question on a menu item, and she was insulted that I didn't know.... yikes.. Worst part, when we went to pick up it was the owners wife.. woman needs a vacation.. won't be calling again. DO NOT GO TO ATHENS GRILL IN LOWELL. They charge you a fee for using a debit card and DON'T TELL YOU. I noticed when I happened to look at my receipt hours later that they charged me more than what I was told my total was. (How many people actually look at their card machine receipt anyway?). I called to complain that I want the fee back. He YELLED at me on the phone saying he can't be blamed if people don't know. I said you need to tell a customer that you are charging them OVER the price that you told them their bill was. He said the credit card company charges that fee. I said that is your fee to pay not mine as a customer. He said he can't afford to pay that. I said then don't take credit cards or don't have a business if you can't afford it. He actually told me, THE CUSTOMER, that I should pay with cash and wouldn't have to worry about it. So unprofessional to treat a customer that way. Good customer service would have been to tell me before swiping my card and let me decide if I want to pay that (I would not have bought from there) and refunding the fee for this one time. Now I will not go back. I would not have known about a fee ahead of time as I ordered over the phone. Nobody said anything at any time about it. I saw a sign saying "a gyros a day keeps the doctor away," a bunch of weird stuffed squirrels on the counter, and a weird fake gyros sandwich made from toilet paper. If I had noticed that, shouldn't I have noticed a sign charging me for something that should be their responsibility? It doesn't matter what the dollar amount was that I was charged, it was the principle of poor customer service and charging me MORE than what I was told. That totally seems illegal. read more
