So my friends Harold and Kevin raved so about this hotdog place that I decided to give it a go and drove out of my way to try their Chicago Style Hotdog. Unlike a few of the reviews, I found the staff to be friendly and the service prompt. It ends up the owner, Bob, grew up near Carl's Red Hots hotdog stand on 83rd & Jeffery and derived his inspiration from there. It shows. Vienna Vienna Vienna! Dogs, polishes, buns, etc. These were really good dogs--I ate two! I'm not certain the cucumber is true to the "Chicago Style Hotdog," but I'm not offended. This was worth the trip. The French Fries were also outstanding--crisp and well salted. (I hate soggy fries don't you--LOL) This place was worth the trip. read more

Been here in the past and always reminded me of the hot dog I remember from the past. Today, disappointed. Main reason...the bun. If it was steamed had ben out for hours. Food is always good ever since I was a little kid. However, lately the staff needs customer service training. They are very unapologetic with their rudeness. Last time I went in no acknowledgment at the order station until they finished what they were doing. A "Hello be right with you would be nice." Ordered at the driveway and the credit machine was down. I asked my total and she said, I don't know I just take your order that's why I told you it's cash only before you ordered. I said I can wait for you to go get my total so I know if I can add more to my order or not I just stopped here and want to know if I have enough. Another lady got my total for me. But I really wanted to drive off and not get anything. Neighborhood favorite but poor customer service can diminish integrity for the business. 2 stars for poor experience. read more

I went through the drive through and attempted to order a Chicago style hot dog and hamburger. I was told they didn't have hamburgers. When I got to the window to pay, I was given a total that exceeded my order. When I inquired at the window why my bill was so high, the lady told me I ordered a jumbo hotdog. I told her I didn't and she proceeded to tell me again that I did. She was rolling her eyes and twisting her neck. I asked her why she was twisting her neck and saying whatever. She said it didn't matter. I don't spend my hard earned money with rude, nasty and disrespectful businesses. They have poor customer service. I've stopped by Skyway a few times since I go over to Indiana and despite the name this avoids the Skyways. The drive through is a good option and not one you see too often in a non-chain. They also have pizza puffs which they do well-last time I made my visiting friend eat one despite his lack of hunger. He actually just wanted a Chicago style hot dog and this is where it goes awry. They serve the dog with cucumbers, which is a weird addition. Yes, that's right an addition not a substitution for the pickle. Weird, arbitrary and unnecessary. I've had it before so I ended up trying out their Italian beef, I requested it dunked with hot peppers and aside from the fact that there was only like 6 peppers to speak of it was pretty dry to boot. I will probably come through again if I'm back in town and pressed for time. Otherwise, I'll wait to find a spot on either side of the Skyway. read more

This is my boyfriends family and his favorites Hot dog spot in South Shore . A Local favorite of South shore. This establishment has been around for a very long time and kept the same concept for a long time. The place is very direct which you can only do take out and only a few bar stools to sit. The place is very small so this is a good spot if you just want something quick and go. Parking lot is very limited which I can imagine getting busy very quickly. I ended up ordering their signature hotdog which is the "Chicago Style Hot dog" which came with French fries, and medium fountain drink for $4.99 plus tax. The hotdog was pretty good with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers with onions. I love the sesame on the hot dog bun which I thought it was different Next time when I visit again I will definitely try other food items on the menu. They have made some changes in recent years but they still do things well. I miss the shaggy dog (they no longer carry Sauer kraut), but the Maxwell Street Polish is a decent substitute. We go regularly on the weekends when we are working on our boat in the boatyard nearby. read more

I walked inside during rush hour, without a single customer in sight waiting to place an order. There were 2 women having a grand ole girl talk while I awkwardly waited there to place a simple order. After 2 minutes of observing the chatter continue, I decided to go elsewhere. With any restaurant establishment, service is the key, hence why it's called the service industry. A neighborhood favorite. Located in an industrial area, it's great for lunch and is often frequented by workers looking to grab a quick bite. The inside is small with bar-stool seating only - no more than 7-10 chairs. There is a drive-thru that seems tight, but I've never tried it myself. Prices are incredibly reasonable and the service is pretty quick. The parking lot is tight. I often park on the street to avoid the traffic jam in the lot. read more

Like Josh N, I settled into this homey East Side staple for a delicious chocolate shake. What I received was a churning chocolate maltED. It started off well enough. Then, it got questionable. Then, it crossed into the danger zone. My belly gave me a 2-minute warning that some bad stuff was about to happen if I proceeded further. Don't get me wrong: it wasn't prepared badly. I just *hate* malt. It grosses me out. Whoppers are repugnant to me. The only appropriate place for malt in my belly comes via Colt .45 (or, more recently, Smirnoff Ice; revenge is a dish best served cold, my dear Ms. Curtis!). That's too bad I was grossed out because the store is pretty cool. It's small but functional. It's survived a car running straight through it. It has extremely polite high schoolers working there (one who even recognized my college t-shirt because her friend is attending my alma mater come Autumn). I don't know that I would race down to the East Side to come back but if in there neighborhood, I would stop in for some dogs, fries (with cheese) and SODA. A few stools with a window view inside, plus two picnic tables under the awning on the 95th Street side to watch the world pass by at the crucial junction of US 12/20 & 41. You could take your meal to Calumet Park and sit along the shores of Lake Michigan. Or walk west a few blocks along 95th and eat your dog from THE best river vantage in the city (the Jake & Elwood Blues Memorial Bridge crossing the Calumet) or walk north a few to the best alternative river view (Ewing over the Calumet.) If you're really lucky, a freighter will give the bridge an erection and you can enjoy the spectacle. Furthermore, service at The Skyway is quick, efficient, and with no attitude -- unless an occasional smile is now considered an attitude.
