Dear Banana Republic Customer Service,…read more I am writing to share one of the most embarrassing and upsetting customer service experiences I have ever had at one of your stores. I have been a loyal customer of the Banana Republic location at 101 Liberty St. #1420, New York, NY 10006, as it is conveniently located near my office. About a week ago, I purchased a pair of off-white jeans. They only had one pair available in my size. When the sales associate brought them to me, I noticed visible dirty marks around both front pockets and on the back of the jeans. I asked whether another pair was available, but I was told there was not. Because I was in a hurry, I decided to purchase them anyway. On July 30, I returned to the store because I had decided not to wear the jeans and wanted to return them. As soon as I showed them to one of the sales associates, she immediately asked whether I had worn them. I explained that I had not and reminded her that the jeans already had those marks when I purchased them. She said she needed to call the manager. When the manager arrived, she did not introduce herself or greet me. Instead, her first question was, "Did you wear these pants?" Before responding, I simply said, "Good afternoon," because I expected at least a basic level of courtesy. She then told me the store could not accept the return because of the condition of the jeans. Once again, I explained that the marks were already there when I purchased them. Rather than handling the situation privately and professionally, the manager walked over to another display table, held up a different pair of jeans in front of other customers, and loudly stated, "This is how the pants should look when they haven't been worn." At that moment, I felt publicly accused of being dishonest. I told her that this conversation should not be taking place in front of other customers because it was humiliating and inappropriate. I left the store feeling embarrassed, disrespected, and unfairly judged. As a Latino Black man, the interaction left me feeling profiled and treated differently. While I cannot speak to anyone's intent, the way I was approached, questioned, and publicly challenged made me feel discriminated against. Every customer deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and professionalism, especially when there is no evidence of wrongdoing. I am not only disappointed by the outcome but also by the manner in which I was treated. Regardless of the store's return policy, there is a respectful and private way to handle concerns with a customer. Unfortunately, that did not happen. I would appreciate being contacted by someone from your Customer Relations team to discuss this experience and the conduct of the store manager. I believe this matter deserves review so that no other customer has a similar experience.

The fitting room area is at the back aide of the store with multiple stalls. The checkout area has multiple self checkout lanes and registers too. As I explored the store, I pretty much saw all their regular clothing types in stock. There were a lot of the products on sale with discounted prices. We were looking for a specific Super Mario t-shirt that we found for all of us (men, women and kid, to match as family :p). I was little disappointed they didn't have any special collection for NY and NYC. The fitting room had a line, we had wait few minutes for our turn. Staff members were very friendly, helping customers around the store, in fitting room area and at the checkout.

Then I went upstairs to look around and Abigail helped me with some of the clothes and tops upstairs. Overall, the hiring department did something right. Even the manager came up to me to let me know the prices were reduced for some part of the sections in case I wasn't aware. So yes, definitely would be going back to check more. Ingrid introduced me to the jeans, but couldn't find what I was looking for. However, I left feeling happy with what I got for now. Nice!

Then, with each step the buttons and zippers were becoming undone. I would refasten walk about four steps and same. As I was out, I stopped at a tailor who quoted me more than the $26 I paid for the coat. He quoted me $35 to fix it. Naaahhh, that makes no sense. I returned home for another coat and hung the broken one, planning to return it. I mean things happen, I got a faulty item, no biggie. It was not used again after this mishap. Couldn't be used. Today, 6th Jan, one week later, (first week of February 2024), I requested an exchange. I really liked the coat but, it was sold broken. I just wanted one that could be worn out. I told the cashier I wore it once and it started falling apart while wearing it. She checked with another cashier who informed us it couldn't be returned because the tag was off. I don't wear clothes with the tags still on them so of course the tag was off. However, I HAD the tag AND my receipt. Yes, I hold on to tags and receipts for a while. I asked the two cashiers if there was someone else I could speak with, ya know, plead my case. In comes the manager. He reiterated what the ladies said but was condescending about it. Not so much the BS he said, but how he said it. You had to have been there. Like I was trying to scam them. Like I was committing high treason against Primark. He informed me they couldn't exchange it because they wouldn't be able to sell it as it was worn. W H A T?!? But I just told you the fasteners aren't working. What do you mean you wouldn't be able to sell it? You absolutely shouldn't try to sell this unless you're giving a huge discount and FULL DISCLOSURE which I doubt. How you wanna sell me a damaged item but be upset with me for trying to return it? After he gave his lil speech, he mockingly asked, "IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE?" Then walked off. The young cashier looked embarrassed for him but I continued speaking with her pleasantly as I repacked my coat. It wasn't her fault. So now, do shoppers need to test their clothes on the street? Like, keep tags on while wearing it so they are allowed to return it if there's an issue? I feel like that's what you're saying. You're telling me if the tag was on, I would have gotten my lil exchange? Because I've exchanged items here without questions simply because the tag was on. He could have checked the coat and would have realized it wasn't worn. Couldn't be worn. If I wanted a robe I would have bought that. Aycaramba man! Eat my shorts! They approved having an item shipped out to me and then rectified my blunder of having asked for the wrong size. They were accommodating, professional, and patient. After reminiscing on the past glory of my Luxe Touch Ts and scanning the sale rack for any remnants of them, I stumbled upon the most beautiful lightweight pin striped suit jacket I have ever seen. It's one of those ones that you see in Italy or in a custom tailor store in Tribeca that cost over a rack. One of those ones you say "When I make it I'mma get that..." I was determined not to spend over my $123, but this jacket clocked in at $350. As I was licking my wounds and picturing myself looking BEAST in the jacket, a BR employee, Alejandro, came down like an Angel from the heavens to try and help get the price down as much as possible. He could see in my eyes how much I wanted it. If I signed up for the rewards it would be 20% off and with the promotion they're running it was another 25% off yadda yadda yadda. But MAN did that price come down. I still came out of pocket like $70 more than I said I would but y'all know how that goes ahahha. He also helped me pick the sizing, and seemed genuinely happy to be helping me only 30 minutes from close which I know is annoying as all hell. Shoutout to Alejandro man. It's experiences like this that made me start writing these reviews in the first place. I had no intention of reviewing a Banana Republic store yesterday, but Alejandro forced my hand.
