My boyfriend and his family love coming here every year for annual family beach vacations for the quality of apparel at this shop (his dad grew up in Raleigh and came here every year in his childhood). It's the shop's 60th anniversary this year, and they had such great hoodie designs! I'm very picky when buying hoodies, but I picked up a pretty cream-colored one with a simple but aesthetically pleasing design. The quality is thick and durable, and the material outside is very smooth while the material inside is very soft and comfortable -- just the way I like my hoodies! I also bought a very light wash jean jumpsuit that was super cute and, luckily for me, the last one AND it fit! :) Staff was very nice and helpful. I tried things on in a fitting room, and the girls were friendly and talked to me there and at the register. The shop was also very clean, had a lot of different items to choose from (not just apparel, but beach equipment, too), and was set up very trendy. My only qualms are that everything is pretty pricey, and the women's clothing specifically were sort of unreasonably priced. My hoodie and jumpsuit in total were $146, which was a bit above my budget, but I hadn't seen anything like them before and having come from California, I just caved and bought them. There were a pair of olive women's shorts that were 40% of the fabric used for either of the items I bought that were $78. They were cute shorts but not really worth it for that price, and it was more expensive than any other individual item I had picked up in the store! Overall, I think it's a nice place to check out and treat yourself at once in a while. The styles are quality, cute, trendy, and very much beachwear/casual (i.e., shorts, crop tops, dresses, with some puffy jackets). They unfortunately don't have petite sizes (I'm 5'2"), so I'll be getting that jumpsuit hemmed (it was just too cute to pass up). I've also noticed that the sizes are much smaller compared to sizes I'm used to at other places in CA and even at some other souvenir shops at Atlantic Beach. I usually wear a size XS/S, but the M jumpsuit fits well and almost snugly on me. However, the hoodies are pretty oversized because they're in the men's section, so hopefully this information is useful to anyone who comes across this review! read more

I just walked out of the store at 8:04pm Talked down to when I let the manager know, I was surprised by the time didn't realize I was taking so long and apologetic. Told I needed to hurry bc I was warned the store was closing and employees needed to go home. As a mom, working hard to quickly shop and holding a lot of merchandise in my hand, I was treated very poorly. I quickly spent $244 and got out of their way because I was obviously annoying the employees and personally wanted to leave as quickly as possible, so I never had to go into the store again. As a southern myself, there are ways to gracefully handle moments like this, and the manager and surrounding employees did not come to assist me without me or seek to help or cordially and politely help the process move along without insulting me. read more

I would not recommend shopping here. The salespeople acted as though they wanted to be anywhere other than at the shop helping customers. I asked a few questions about some sunglasses and barely got more than a 1 word response. I finally gave up and went elsewhere. We visited this surf shop today - a rainy beach day. Since we are at the beach we had bathing suits on under our clothes but hadn't been in water, were not wet, and had literally $100s of dollars worth of merchandise to try on. We were informed that we would NOT be allowed to try on clothes due to having a bathing suit on... at surf shop on the beach. (???) The shop sells moderately high end surf wear ... nothing fancy. Just typical Roxy, Billabong and Patagonia. You would have thought we were trying to don a Balmain dress in a Sax 5th Avenue. The attendants were impolite and the manager unwilling to relent on the asinine store policy. We decided not to spend a dime there... especially since it was typical surf store clothing that one can procure anywhere. We have shopped in St. Barth, St. Maarten and beach communities all along the east coast and it's never been an issue to wear a bathing suit at a beach store. Seems like shop owners like to make stupid rules and it costs them sales. Too bad, there's a lack of customer service these days. read more

How can you not check out a surf shop or two when you're at the beach? What a fantastic opportunity to shop for a new pair of swimwear! This isn't your traditional store, like Target or Wal-mart, that carry some selections of swimwear. This isn't even like the local Wings store. Goodness, no! If and when you want good quality swimwear and you're willing to shell out serious bucks, then you go to Atlantic Beach. AB is the oldest surf shop in the area and apparently has been doing pretty darn well. Great selections! And, if you look hard, you'll be able to find good deals. GREAT selection of men's and women's clothing / shoes / accessories. I stopped in on a rainy day with my sister to check out the island gear and was pleasantly surprised with the brands selection. Contrary to my expectations, it wasn't simply Quicksilver / Billabong / Patagonia gear; there were cute dresses from Free People, Tibi, and other "non-surf" brands as well as almost every style of flip-flop / slipper that you could imagine. The prices were a little steep -- it read more like a boutique and less like a surf shop, but we lucked out and happened to visit during the end-of-summer sale and scored some amazing deals on dresses and shoes. We came by boat so we have backpacks on us. They treated us like we were gypsies. I spent a lot of money here. When we got back to the hotel I realized I kept an item that I didn't want. So I took it back next day. They said only store credit. Very rude people! She kept saying that I can use it anytime but I had to keep explained to her that I don't plan on coming back this way. Also if the store manager cares he should have your size tags on the hanger so you don't have to pick and pool and try to find a tag just to find the size otherwise I would've walked out with more clothes read more

Great shop, lots of options and cute beach items. Staff is very helpful. They are one of the only shops in town I feel actually try to follow the COVID restrictions and guidelines. They practice social distancing, have the Plexiglas up between cashier, hand sanitizer at the door and have tape on the ground to help people in line stay spread apart. From the moment you walk in you know you are in a real surf shop! The staff was very friendly especially Jeremy who helped us purchase a few shirts and answered all my surf board questions. I even had a chance to meet one of the owners who was really nice and made us feel right at home. All in all an extensive and authentic surf shop, we will return when back in the area. read more

AB Surf Shop is a cool little shop with a lot of good brands and products. My family and I like to shop there and stop in from time to time to check out the new arrivals. The reason for the 3-star review: On a recent visit my wife and in were checking out at the register when one of the shirts came up double the price of what we were told by two employees. Of course we questioned it and the guy behind the counter said, "the person that told you that was wrong". He asked us if we still wanted the shirt, I agreed to purchase it at full price. Where things went wrong in my opinion was, I told him there were a couple other people were standing there with the same understanding of the pricing. Keep in mind, my tone was calm and not suggestive. He said with a irritated/ sarcastic tone, "Do you just want me to take the shirt off?". I reaffirmed I wanted the shirt. Then as I was signing the receipt he asked me who said the shirt was half off, I pointed out both of the young ladies, then left. I didn't expect him to discount the shirt, if I didn't want to pay full price I would have told him to keep it. I am assuming the guy is a manager there. It wasn't a great way to conduct business, especially in a small town, with some locals. If this guy struggles in a retail setting, he should probably work somewhere with little to no public interaction. A good way to handle that situation would be to apologize for the misunderstanding between the staff then ask if I would still like to purchase the item. It's a simple concept, treating others with respect. In fairness, the other employees have always been helpful and polite in the past. Description of employee: the guy is very short, bald and I think he has a goatee. read more

The selection is good but the staff is what makes the grade. I was appalled at the way the lady at the counter treated her staff. The blonde supervisor, name starts with an A. She was rude and very snobbish. Even when I checked out with a considerable purchase amount, she acted as though she would rather be some place else and I wasn't worth her time. The young girls that helped me were great but you could tell they were afraid of her or had had enough of her. Purchased an Atlantic Beach Surf logo tee shirt for my husband while on vacation. When I got home I saw the sleeve had a tear that I didn't notice while buying it so I sent an email explaining that I had purchased it while on vacation and had returned home. I asked if I could get a replacement. Didn't hear back. I sent a follow up email after waiting over a week and got a reply asking if I could send the receipt which I promptly sent. I have yet to receive a reply. If I was local I would have driven there for an exchange but I am 10 hours away. The shirt was $22.00 so it's not expensive but I expected that I'd be able to get a replacement since I reported it immediately upon our return home and it had been purchased just a couple of days earlier. I spent a decent amount of money that day as evidenced by the receipt I provided. It's doubtful that I will shop there again if I return to that area. read more

AB is hands down the best surf shop in the EI-AB-Morehead-Beaufort area. Owned property down the road in Emerald Isle for 16 years and I would say that I visited AB surf shop at least once, sometimes multiple times during each vacation. There is a plethora of boys/girls, men's/women's and children's clothing available as well as a great selection of boards and accessories. I usually try to get some long sleeved shirts in the off season to remind me of the island. Haven't had to purchase a board in 10 years but knowing the island and the surf shops in the area, AB Surf Shop would be the first place I would go for one (or anything). The staff is always great and there is always beautiful women working behind the counter which makes the trips to AB even better. If you're in the Emerald Isle/Atlantic Beach area you absolutely have to stop by AB Surf Shop and grab some gear or a shirt. Just wanted to show some love on here for my favorite store on the island after all the great things I've bought there over the years. read more
