Let me tell you, Atlantic Orthopedic is where hope goes to die--slowly, in a waiting room that smells like expired Bengay and broken dreams. I arrived at 8:30am for my 9:00 appointment. At 11:15am, a nurse summoned me like I'd just won the lottery, except the prize was a paper gown and a 48°F exam room with a single chair designed by the Marquis de Sade. The doctor breezed in like a disgruntled ghost, stared at my X-rays for 3.5 seconds, mumbled something about "getting older," and prescribed physical therapy as if it were a cure-all--like Windex in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I asked if I'd need surgery. He shrugged. I sneezed. He said, "That could be related." What?! Honestly, I've had better diagnostics from WebMD while drunk. On the plus side, the receptionist had stickers. I took three and left limping, emotionally fragile, and now suspicious that my spine is plotting against me. Would I recommend Atlantic Orthopedic? Only if you're seeking medical gaslighting and an ego check. Otherwise, try a YouTube yoga video and save yourself the co-pay. read more

I want to be clear that this review is not about the doctors or nursing staff, as I ended up being seen at the VB office and it was wonderful. My experience is strictly about the person handling appointment scheduling and I feel it's important to give feedback on this matter because this is the first person people talk to when interacting with this practice. To start, their website clearly states that they open at 8 AM, but the phones were not live until 8:25. A minor issue but worth mentioning if you're calling first thing in the morning. When I called to make an appointment, the scheduler sounded openly inconvenienced by the fact that I was calling at all. There was a lot of huffing and sighing on her end, which immediately made the interaction uncomfortable. When I gave her my new address, she snapped at me for "not giving her enough time to type," even though I offered the information at a normal pace. I apologized and said I didn't mean to offend her, and she snapped again...this time for saying she wasn't offended in the first place. The whole exchange felt unnecessarily hostile and unprofessional. It left me feeling frustrated and honestly hesitant to continue with the practice. Overall, it was an awful customer service experience, and I hope it's not representative of the rest of the office. read more

I took my grandmother there to see Dr. Strand at the recommendation of another doctor in that group. She is in great pain & truly needs help. The front desk receptionist was very nice & so was the physician assistant. He was ok. He wasn't too friendly nor was he mean. I just have to realize that not everyone is a people person like us. He may have been tired or something being that our appointment was so late in the day. I don't know. I just expected a little more excitement when meeting a new patient...especially one who was in a great deal of pain & truly needed his help. She has to get a test done & then come back to see him again before he will do anything to help her with her pain. The point of getting referred to him was to get injections. It's clearly going to be a process to get to that point, so hopefully she can get the test done ASAP to get this ball rolling. If she finally gets relief and he helps her, I may update this review. This is by far the WORST healthcare experience I've ever had. Do NOT go here by any means. (I recommend Tidewater Orthopedics or literally anywhere else.) They are rude and unprofessional, specifically Dawn, the secretary to Dr. Sanderlin. They do not take into consideration their patients' mental health at all. I ended up recording my phone calls with anyone I spoke to because of how rude and unprofessional they were. At one point, when I called to try to talk to a doctor and get some information regarding my case, I had the secretary audible scoff/laugh when I said who I was (which I recorded so I have proof). I also had to wait a month and a half to get an appointment to receive any pain relief with a SI Joint injection. Mind you, I have been dealing with this pain since November, even before I had my appointment in Jan. for them to schedule me for this injection in mid-March. When I went to Tidewater, they were able to schedule me with the same procedure that week; this goes to show that Atlantic Orthopedic did not care about the severity of my case or my mental health. I could go on and on about how horrible my experience was, but I will leave it at that. I would not see Dr Sanderlin or anyone in the Atlantic Orthopedic Specialists unless you have no other option. I doubt his expertise, awareness, and care of patients' physical pain and mental health. read more

I have gone to multiple physical therapy places and I've seen multiple ankle doctors in my life. Atlantic is the only one who has actually helped me. Dr. Campbell is seriously a health hero. He took a Hail Mary surgery and made it so I can walk again. Then when I had issues (after 2 yrs) he knew exactly why and put me into PT to try to correct it (that's what I'm going through now, so hopefully it works!). I like that even though he is a surgeon, cutting me open wasn't his go-to cure. My only "issue" is he doesn't chit chat in the room with you. He goes very quickly. Some can take it as bad bedside manor, but it's really just because he sees so many people and is busy. Now, physical therapy. I really like the facility and all the different equipment they have. They come up with a plan just for you and they walk you through it. I also like that they don't make you sit and wait forever. When you get there, they pull you on back. It's always clean and tidy, and the atmosphere is very caring. Definitely recommend! read more

My mom has a hand fracture and we were referred here by an urgent care because they have a "walk in" service. Well, once we got there she was going to be seen as a walk in but after she showed her insurance cards (Medicare and Medicaid ) she was told she won't be seen and instead she had to make an appointment. So we tried to make an appointment and the lady said she can't be seen until April.. it's the beginning of December and did I say my mother has a broken hand? They were rude in the phone to even try to make an appointment and this feels discriminatory towards the type of insurance my mom has. I will never ever go back and hope if you are thinking about using their services and also have this insurance you safe yourself the trip. read more

Their reasoning is that they don't want to get involved. I am appalled and angry and disappointed. I had a major foot reconstruction by Dr Campbell in early April. I am still recovering from surgery, but can already tell how much better I will be once my foot is completely healed. Do not go here! The first doctor I had seen through their urgent care was beyond amazing though! The second doctor I had seen after making a follow up appointment was beyond rude and careless. I had an MRI scheduled and now I can no longer get due to the fact the doctor REFUSED to talk to my insurance company about the reason I needed it. So here I am 3 days before my MRI appointment getting this news. I will be going to a different place now. I can now hardly walk on my leg due to a mass amount of knee pain and swelling. I have been coming here for a couple of years. I have never been a fan of the consumer service at check in however Dr Gilbson and his nurse is awesome so I took the good with the bad. But today's visit has put me over the top. The lobby waiting area was empty and it was 4 staff sitting at the window and do you know not one looked up to acknowledge me. Finally I was fed up and I yell excuse me can I get someone to check me in. Nothing so I walked up to the shield and knocked and repeated myself can so body check me in for my appointment. The women looked half way up and said someone will check you in and looked back down. It took all of me to control what I wanted to say out of my mouth. I fell and broke my wrist on a Saturday 3/14. the emergency room gave me a referral to come to Atlantic orthopedic follow up as soon as possible but being they were closed on Sunday I had a wait till first thing Monday morning to try and call and get an appointment. Took me almost 3 hours to get them to make an appointment for me because the billing lady wasnt picking up to set up a system since I was self-pay I find it crazy that I cannot make an emergency appointment without setting up a billing system before I even stepped foot into their office .finally convince them to make an appointment and they told me the next available appointment would be Thursday mind you my wrist had been badly broken and it was emergency and I needed to see a doctor to get corrective surgery ASAP . I told them this they didn't seem to care but after some back and forth I finally got someone to make me an appointment at 1:30 that day. When I get to the office for the appointment I had to bring my daughter with me I am a single parent ,they had told me she won't be allowed in the office due to the pandemic that is going on right now which is understandable but they didn't tell me on the phone they weren't letting children come in the office so I was unprepared they made no exception and had to leave again my wrist severely shattered driving myself around they didn't seem to care. After hearing the guy screaming in the room next to me I was very fearful right off. The doctor who saw me was the rudest doctor I have ever seen. After I told her what I did for a living, her demeanor changed. I think this company is a machine. They do not care about you. You are a sheeple and a dollar machine for them. The same injuries I came in with I am going to leave with. They made me wrong appointments to see doctors who could not take care of my issues, one doctor offered to do surgery and then next time said he could not because I was too overweight, that I needed a weight loss surgery giving me the name of a doctor who could do it. I was charged my 50 copay to see a doctor that I was not needing to see and they did not care that they made me an appointment with the wrong doctor. They are very confused. They still have not addressed my knee or looked at the mri i had done months ago. They act like you can't be trusted with pain meds, which made me tell them I didn't want any and I would rather have a muscle relaxant for severe pain in my back and knee. I still lay awake at night in pain. It is six months later and I am still being treated poorly by their staff. Only a few good people in this company, the therapists are good but the phone answering service and most of the doctors are very careless with the customers who are paying their bills. I wish I could leave a lower review. I am going today for the last time but I do not recommend this company and I have worked in healthcare/nursing before. These folks need to shape up and start taking better care of their customers. They are relying on the poor elderly geriatric folks to keep their numbers up. read more

He literally kept us waiting for 45 mins in a hot clinic room for a post-op surgical visit while he made travel arrangements very loudly on the phone! Super poor customer service!! He does care about patients at all! Continually talks over you if you ask a question, rude and just horrible delivery when speaking with patients!!! Their billing system is terrible. We had received a collections notice from them when the bill was already paid and proven it was paid. They told us not to worry about it. Now almost three years we receive a court order to appear in court for warrant of debt for a debt that was already paid. Called in their accounting office and was told to ignore it. Unfortunately, you cant ignore a court order. So had to call the law office to make sure they had it was not a debt, and it was still on their collections. Very disspointing to have these kind of things fall through the cracks that can ruin someones credit. read more

To I came in with my husband to be seen for his very first visit with this company I came in 4 weeks ahead of time to do the paperwork for his first vist we have been seating in the waiting room from 2:00pm until 2:55 when I went to the receptionist to ask if there was running behind the young lady in the front ask another worker that had green hair who was she calling she started rolling her eye as I am waiting for the receptionist at the counter I look up and to see the young man in the front on the bath and body works website and the same lady with the green hair standing up front looking at bath and body with the young man who is seating in the check out that would be the back of the receptionist booth. If they was running a hour or 30 minutes late they should come up and tell the lady to tell everyone who is checking in there will be a wait that was not done at all now mind you I have been seating in there waiting room a whole hour and still has not seen the doctor or have been called to the back as of yet and it is 3:30 now but the funny thing is if you are more than 15 minutes are they will not see you. The funny thing is I should not have to pay for this vist at all today we get called to the back by 3:34 today this office sick and do you think anyone said anything about the hour wait in the waiting room this will be the last office vist to this building I would be scheduling for the va beach office they seem to have good sense to say they are running a hour behind then to say will we have all new appointments today still doesn't have anything to do with me just sad I am over this office today I bet you I will not get a call from anyone here. I just rearranged my life and kids schedules to squeeze in a foot surgery with Dr. Moore only to have them call me TWO DAYS before surgery to tell me I had been bumped "for more urgent cases." Nevermind that I've had a torn tendon in my foot for months now and because of a military move, I haven't been able to fix it. I am in constant pain. I came here yesterday 03/03/22 as a walk-in around 5:05pm; they closed at 6. It looks like I am the only patient there, and some of the staff started to leave. This is my first time in this location, so I'm a new patient.I'm having a lot of shoulder pain due to my car accident back in 2014. I filled up the forms and wrote down the history of car accidents in 2014, where my symptoms started. This male wear scrubs called me ( I forgot to get his name) on the other window, talking to me with a rude tone of voice that I fill up the form wrong about car accident, and they don't see patient about this matter. I said I was not there for a car accident visit. I was there because I am in pain, and that car accident was the hx where my symptoms started. And he insist that they don't see the patient about car accident. I told him I could cross that part out because I was not there for that reason. I was there to get treated, not no filing case about car accident. And he still have this attitude and go back to the front desk who check me in that I fill it up wrong and they don't see no patient for car accident . I can hear all he saying, so I told the front desk I don't have a problem crossing that out. And he is still talking in a rude voice that I need to fill out a new form. At that point, I told the front desk to shred all my information. If that person is the one going to see me, I don't want to be here. The front desk stopped me from leaving and she asked me what happened. I said he very rude raising his voice to me because I fill up that one question wrong. First of all I am a new patient to your office I don't know your policy, you can explain to me in a good tone, lower voice and I completely understand what are you saying!. I also work in the Medical Field, but I never spoke to my patients like the way you talked to me, sir looking towards him! He didn't say a word, turn around, and left the front desk. The front desk told me that he is not the nurse practitioner who will see me; he is a medical assistant who will take me to the exam room! And she apologized on his behalf; the manager on duty is gone, so I can't file a complaint about his behavior. I felt that this office did a four star job in helping me diagnose, treat, and rehab the tears in my ACL and meniscus. The Dr I saw is very kind and helpful and on the front end, he had a lot of patience explaining what was wrong in my knee and the options that we had. The surgery was well done, right next door to the office (the office is pretty much connected to the hospital). The only downsides are kind of typical frustrations in the medical field: The after care appointments felt a little more rushed and brief; I would definitely spend more time waiting than I spent getting checked. The waiting room was usually quite full, and they were often behind schedule. All in all, I had a good experience other than the fairly standard frustrations, and most importantly, my knee is now stronger! read more

I was referred to AO by the ER doc at Sentara Independence ... After 4 seperate calls, being placed on hold for over 9 minutes, each time; I was finally in contact with the appointment setter. She was by far the rudest person I have ever spoken to. After giving her the physicians name I was referred to- she informed me he was not a shoulder dr but a spine specialist; and then quickly asked what other doctor I would like to see. Having not ever been to an orthopedic specialist- I told her I was unsure, and explained my situation. She quickly snapped and told me to pick a different location and started spouting off street names. I asked her to slow down, and that I was unfamiliar with any of the locations. She then proceeded to tell me to pick a location or she couldn't make an appointment. I replied with which ever location has the next available appointment for a rotator cuff injury. She had an attitude the entire time, although I'm in severe pain- I tried to be as cordial as possible. I can only hope my future experiences dealing with them is more pleasant. read more

This group has ended up with both of my kiddos. My son was born with severe clubfoot and pigeon toes in 1993. After 4 surgeries over his first 4 years of life, we were told he would probably not grow to be over 5'7", wouldn't run or do much in Sports. Well, I can't fault them for being cautious about giving hope, but as I watch my 5'11" son playing Club Baseball for his college, or peruse the wall of trophies (including 2 - 1/2 marathons thank you very much), I have to say they blew that one call. Of course, that means they did their job and did it well. As for my softball loving daughter, her knees are playing havoc with her, so now she is in the system. Guess we will see how well her treatment goes, but I have nothing but highest hopes. Staff are great, and you never get that ignored feeling that some medical practices can give you. I always have the feeling we are the doctor's only patient when he's with us (instead of having all 20 that he sees that day on his mind), and I respect that a lot. If you can't help the circumstance, at least you can make a good choice for treatment. read more

If anyone else has a choice, DON'T go there. This is not the first time I've had issues with her and she's quick to raise her voice to an unprofessional level. The frail,  black-haired, pale front office woman is disrespectful,  incoherent,  and has a terrible attitude. She doesn't know how to talk to people. What she said to my friend, who had an appointment there, was condescending and not polite at all!  On top of all that she said they have to reschedule my friend 's appointment after we were there for his appointment  Friday, 02/24/17!!  He was told on his initial appointment by a doctor to bring a copy of his previous doctor's records as they already had his records from his accident. When we were there yesterday with his papers, he was already told by the doctor TO BRING, they said they have to send off for his records from his previous doctor.  I then asked Erin,  the same frail,  black -haired, pale front office worker politely "Why isn't he being seen?"  because I didn't know yet and she looks at him and says "I already told you! " We go to the next line and I'm asking my friend "What is wrong with her!? " "She has a serious problem!! " The chubby, black-haired, co-worker with glasses then says "You have to leave with that attitude! " Damn right I had an attitude! We were totally disrespected by a "Trash Talker" that works at a Dr. office. Then it was two front office workers upset with us for no logical reason,  Erin and her girlfriend. We then are called to the side/back and my friend is speaking to another woman about his appointment and she said she'll be back and as we are waiting,  the skinny,  frail black-haired one comes to where we are acts as if she's looking in a folder but just is there to instigate and try to aggrevate us while rolling her eyes and trying to stare at us. I told my friend they need some people skills here and they better learn how to talk to people. Erin then says are you talking about me?  I looked at her and said "Yeah I was talking about you!  And I'm talking to you now! " She then says while walking to the front quietly "Fuck you! "and then aloud "I hope you have a good day!" while patting her thinning hair. I then cursed at Erin and told her I will have a great day (In which I had a great day once I left that God-forsaken office) and I walked to where she walked to in the front window. She then threatens to call the police. Because she started nonsense trash with her ignorant mouth and couldn't back it up she then wants to call the police!  Who would hire someone with her calibar to work anywhere,  a doctor's office at that,  to ASSIST people!!??  On top of all that my friend's appointment was cancelled with no explanation after we were there for his appointment  Friday, 02/24/17!! I will update and elaborate more. I wrote everything that happened; however I will wait to post the rest. I will let the Better Business Bureau (BBB) know also. Please remember we can not allow people to try to demean and talk to you in any kind of manner,  just because they are trifling , jealous, or just snotty for no reason. That is no excuse. If you work anywhere,  especially a doctor's office,  you should atleast be decent and have tact. Today I saw Dr Markham of Atlantic Orthopedics. I must have gotten off on the wrong foot. I made a comment to the assistant taking me to my room that perhaps they should mail the paperwork to patients prior to their appointments since it had taken me almost an hour to complete mine. I was informed by the very pleasant woman at the check in desk that Dr Markham was running 45 minutes behind. Another very friendly woman completed my check in she assured me I would be seen soon. Which I was. I understand the wait due to the nature of the practice. However, what I didn't find acceptable was the condescending manner in which Dr Markham spoke to me. He said he understood I had a problem with all the paperwork. I said no I just suggested that perhaps you could mail it so it was completed. That seemed to set the tone for the visit. He made several more what I felt to be derogatory comments: including asking if the doctors name I mentioned was my psychiatrist, which I don't have! I had written in detail on my chart which I feel he must not have read. I was under the impression I would be seen for my back and knee. That is what I told the person scheduling the appt. I was told by his asst that would not happen. When I asked him he said my insurance company which he named incorrectly wouldn't cover that. I corrected him and told him I had told his scheduler I had two problems and was under the impression I would be seen for both. I left upset with no information other than to lose weight and exercise. He implied I was poor to and couldn't afford a membership to the Y. I was referred by my family doctor for a reason. If that was my only problem I think he would have been able to tell me that. Needless to say I was not happy!! This is my 3rd bad experience with Atlantic Orthopedics. I would drive to Richmond in the snow if necessary to see a doctor before I ever went to there office again!! read more

Horrible experience Wait over an 3 hours to see Dr. Gibson, He ended up only spending 15 minutes with me TOTAL!!!. He didn't end address all of my problems. Looks at my shoulder had me completed a couple of ROM exercises for my elbow and had the nerve to tell me to make another appointment for my elbow because HE didn't have enough time. My appointment today was supposed to be at 12:20. I arrived at the office 20 minutes early as instructed and was not seen until 2:00. The staff at the check in counter all seemed grumpy and irritated, and I had to fill out my forms twice since they gave me a tablet to check in on that died in the middle of my paperwork. Once I finally got in with the doctor I only saw him for about 5 minutes in which he moved my arms around, gave me a diagnosis with no explanation, and told me to come back in a month. On top of all of it the doctor in question refused to do one of the tests on the list because it would take too much time, stating "We don't need to do this unless you want me to clear out my waiting room." and then had the audacity to laugh like what he said was funny. Overall, this is the worst experience I have ever had with a doctor/doctors office and if I had any other options I would not return. read more
