Today was my first experience with Atlas Dental and I am excited to say that I will definitely be going back! From the moment I arrived the staff was warm and welcoming. I knew ahead time that this visit would only be x-rays since it's been a while since I've had them done and it was in a different state. Eve was upbeat when asking me questions about my dental history and then we got to talking about my upcoming wedding. I felt very comfortable tasking with everyone that I saw today. After my screening and having photos taken of all my teeth (so cool to see) I was told that they could fit me in with a cleaning that same day. I know this isn't the norm but I was more than happy to not have to make a shirt follow up visit. As I was leaving after my cleaning, one of the receptionists noticed I didn't have an umbrella and it was getting ready to rain. She graciously asked if I wanted one because they had some extras! I'm leaving this review to document my experience at Atlas Dental Specialists (Shadyside) for two front-tooth crowns. While the office is professional on the surface, my experience overall was extremely frustrating and costly. After my permanent crowns were placed, I developed persistent sensitivity in my right front tooth (cold and hot) that did not improve over time. I also felt a noticeable ledge/step on the back side of the crown near the gumline, which made me concerned about the fit/contour. Aesthetically, the crowns also looked longer and bulkier than expected with heavier incisal edges than what I was aiming for. When I tried to address these concerns, I was advised to pay for additional diagnostics (a wax diagnostic). After I paid for it, the office later terminated the patient-provider relationship instead of completing the planned corrections. What made the situation especially difficult was the refund process: the office confirmed in writing the refund amounts, but repeatedly stated the refund would only be processed if I signed a broad "release/indemnification" agreement exactly as written. The agreement was extremely one-sided. It went far beyond acknowledging a refund and included sweeping waivers and protections for the office, along with a "non-disparagement/online statements" section that, in my view, would discourage patients from speaking openly online about their experience. I was not comfortable signing something like that just to receive an agreed refund. Overall, I'm deeply disappointed by how concerns were handled. The communication and resolution process felt dismissive and, at times, misleading - more focused on protecting the office than responsibly addressing the problem. My takeaway is that the approach felt money-driven, and I left feeling I couldn't trust the process. I would encourage anyone considering treatment here to do thorough due diligence and not rely solely on online ratings. read more

Made an appointment. They called and changed it. It was not a convenient date for me (the one I had previously scheduled was) but I took it anyway. Arrived early. Appointment was for 10:20. That time came and went. I asked when I'd be seen and they said "we're running late." (At 10:18, I had asked if they were running late and was told that they were not.) At 10:25 I asked the receptionist how long my appointment would take. Was told an hour. Well, I'm already ten minutes into my lunch hour and had expected to be seen at my appointment time. I said "nevermind, I'm leaving; you can keep my money" (had to make a $25 deposit before anything happened at all). They said "have a nice day," and I said "f*ck off." (Yeah -- i know that's wrong, but was so frustrated, and also I'm old and have no filter.) It's a downtown office and downtown workers obviously use them and can't be away from work for hours on end because a dentist doesn't keep appointment times.) This place has zero respect for patients' time, but theirs is SO important that I received NUMEROUS texts in the days leading up to my appointment. "...you have an appointment reserved with Atlas Dental Specialists on Wed, Oct 1st at 10:20 AM." And ".."please respond with C to confirm your appointment with Atlas Dental Specialists for October 1st at 10:20 am. If your appt is missed, or cancelled / rescheduled with less than 48 hours' notice, a fee of $50/hour of appt time will apply." So obviously THEIR time is important. Just not their patients' time. Also, every appointment is "separate." Cleaning is one. Examination is another. It's all about money money money with this place. They did refund my $25 deposit though. Terrible place. As others have stated, this practice withholds information and gives misinformation regarding insurance coverage, scheduled appointment times, as well as what will be accomplished during the appointments. And they take no accountability for anything. They've already wasted enough of my time today, that I don't wish to go into the details of how appallingly unprofessional and chaotically run this practice is. Suffice it to say, prepare to be disappointed and disgruntled at every turn. *** The reason there are no yelp reviews since 2023 is likely attributable to the fact that they hit you with the text request for a Google review after a visit in which they believe you had a good experience. read more

Avoid if you can. Never had a dentist that was so poor at managing insurance benefits. They were "in-network" providers for my isurance and yet, on almost every visit I had with them over a two year period, the amount of insurance coverage that they quoted me during my consultation was much less than what my insurance actually covered. In other words, be wary of the amounts they say you will pay for an appointment--it will almost certainly be more! They told me 10 months after an appointment that I owed an additional $540 because "it turned out my insurance didn't cover what they thought it would." They will schedule you for unneccesary work too. After my first consultation, they told me I needed two crown fillings. I got a second opinion from another dentist that said one of the fillings was unneccesary for another 3-5 years. Also, their elevators might as well be the hollywood tower of terror. read more

Office staff seemed like kind people. The dentist was rude and dismissive when I shared my plans for care going forward. He walked out in a huff, and was shaking his head. I wonder if he would treat a male patient that way or how he would feel if he went somewhere for medical care if was treated like that. People skills matter, no matter what kind of advanced technology you have. read more

My first impression was the office seemed clean and modern, and the staff was friendly. After checking in with the receptionist, I waited only a short time before someone came and escorted me to an extremely small room (about the size of a half bathroom). The young woman was overly friendly (almost in-genuinely so) and discussed some of my needs and why I had scheduled the appointment. While giving her my personal details, she entered the information into an iPad. Once she completed her initial information gathering, I was taken to an area with a dental chair and equipment. The dental assistant came in and took some x-rays and then they took me to a very large x-ray machine that sort of circled around my head. It's difficult to explain what it looked like, but it appeared to be a very modern machine. After the x-rays were completed, the dentist came in to look at my teeth. At this point, he talked to me about what I needed and then explained they would schedule me for another visit to have the cleaning done. I was a bit irritated because I had scheduled the appointment to have the cleaning done. None of the people I spoke with on the phone prior to the initial appointment told me I would need to come back for the cleaning. I did, however, come back for the cleaning and it went well. I was comfortable and had no complaints. That is, until the bill showed up. They charged me for a deep cleaning even though I had a regular cleaning. I was only there for about 30 - 45 minutes total. So, of course my insurance didn't cover the full cost of what they were billing me for. When I called them, they denied that I received a regular cleaning and insisted I received a deep cleaning. The issue with this is less to do with the amount I had to pay and more to do with the fact they were not being clear about anything. At this moment, I knew I would not be going back. A few months later, I received a predetermination of benefits letter in the mail from my insurance. The letter was to find out the cost for a procedure that not only did I NOT need, but that I hadn't even requested or discussed with them! I called again to find out what they were doing submitting requests to my insurance when I hadn't been there in over 4 months and I hadn't requested any other services from them. The person on the phone stated that I requested this service and that's why they sent it in. I told her I did not request it and I don't need it. At which point she asked me if I would like to remain in their system as an active patient (I suppose she could tell I wasn't happy with their practices). I told her no, so hopefully they will not be sending any additional requests to my insurance. It's great to have friendly staff and a clean, modern office space, but if you're being shady with your billing practices, I won't be back. There are plenty of dentists in the Pittsburgh area. In fact, there's another dentist in the same building, right across the hall from them. read more

I'd highly recommend Atlas Dental if you're in the market for a new dentist! I was looking for a dentist here in Pittsburgh and am so happy that I found them. The staff is very kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. The office is modernized and has some very high tech equipment readily available. As a new patient they walked me through the "results" of my x-rays that we took at the start of my appointment. To ensure that what they were seeing was accurate we even did another small "tooth cam" x-ray that was able to capture things that the normal x-rays was not able to. The hygienist even found some remaining cement that remained from my braces (over 7 years ago!). From what they told me they are able to everything from your normal dentistry, dentures, to your more advanced procedures etc. As a new patient I needed new x-rays before I could get my cleaning and they said I would need to schedule two separate appointments for those. Luckily there was a last minute opening and I was able to get them back to back. Otherwise it would have been annoying/inconvenient to have to go twice, especially with taking time from work. This would be the only thing I didn't like- but I believe it would only apply to new patients in the case that the date they want doesn't have two back to back slots. This dentist is great, if you need a new dentist I would definitely recommend. Everyone is very nice and professional. Everything is clean and they're technology is nice. The first appt is for X-rays and a consultation. The tech who did my X-rays was very thoughtful and made sure I was comfortable. The dentist was really nice and non judgmental, explained everything very well. I went to check out and they ended up being able to squeeze me in for my cleaning which was awesome. The hygienist explained everything great and was also nice. She told me when something wasn't covered by my insurance (fluoride treatment) and asked me if I wanted it. Now that I have been going to this dentist office for a few years, I can confidently say that this is by that this office has the kindest staff that care about their patients, the office is very clean, and they do quality work. I recently went in for a cleaning and I was told me about their whitening forever program. I received a two custom tray that is a perfect fit for my teeth and I received 6 tubes of whitening solution. I picked it up 10 days before my vacation to Mexico and I was very impressed by the results! The best part of the program is that you get more whitening solution every time you go back for a cleaning! I would highly recommend this method of whitening for anyone that has has sensitive teeth, it didn't bother me at all. I continue to recommend this office to my family and friends, I have never been happier with a dentist! read more

Made a new patient appointment to get my teeth cleaned five weeks in advance. Went in for initial office visit, the staff was amazing, expected to get my teeth cleaned, but they don't do that on a first visit. Was told they would work to get me in "very soon" but there are only a handful of appointments that work in the next month, so I'm looking at another five week wait just to get my teeth cleaned. Appreciate their welcoming atmosphere but it's of no practical use if I have to wait some ten weeks total as a new patient just to get a cleaning. read more

All the work that I had done, a crown and three cavities, are still producing pain. After going back three times for the same complaint, they are charging me for xrays. Also, the office manager, Natalie, demanded and commanded that I pay the $203 that I owe. I walked out and won't be going back there. Bad energy. read more

Dentistry with Hospitality Who doesn't dread going to the dentist? My dread is borne of childhood memories indelibly etched on my psyche by a dentist who drilled us kids' cavities without any anesthesia - undoubtedly, he viewed it as a means to impress upon we youngsters that we need to brush our teeth. Didn't work, but the reasoning behind the motives at least insulated him from accusations that he was related to the Marquis de Sade. Given that routine dentistry is as much a regular part of life as a routine physical (i.e., neither to be avoided), I'm glad to have found Atlas Dental. I actually look forward to my appointments. The work performed, counsel given, etc. is not only painless & among the best I've ever received, but also the folks here are really friendly. Dentistry is a service business no less like any other service business . . . other service businesses regularly exude a sense of appreciation for their customers. Perhaps I'm like a lot of folks who, mysteriously, tend to not expect that level of customer focus & appreciation in a medical practice, so when it happens, it truly distinguishes that business from its competition. I have been coming here for a few years now at the recommendation of many people in my downtown office. It's so convenient, the staff is absolutely great, and the office itself is totally updated with state of the art technology. An example of this... I unfortunately needed a crown, and it was done right then and there so I didn't have to deal with anything temporary and scheduling another appointment. Angela is always my hygienist and she is fantastic - not only does she do a great job, but she is so sweet and I always love catching up with her. My New Year's resolution was to be more selfless (I know, rookie mistake). Even though I've known Dr. Duncan Friedman is handily the best dentist in Pittsburgh--quite possibly the entire state of Pennsylvania--for months, I've avoiding telling Yelpers because I'm afraid. I'm afraid her appointment book is going to explode faster than you can say, "Wednesday morning is booked," and I don't want to share (SEE: above). So for those of you who find yourself in the same position I once did--needing a phenomenal dentist in Pittsburgh, desperate for information (because there really aren't a lot of resources out there), but living in ABJECT TERROR of all things pokey, pointy, scrubby, scrapy, and especially whirry in your mouth, you're welcome for this review. Let's just hope my newfound generosity holds out long enough to finish writing it. The short version: The other day I was wondering if after I finish my graduate degree I'll make enough money to afford me the luxury of flying back to Pittsburgh to have her do my dentistry in the event that I move out of state. That should tell you everything. Okay, the short(er) version: It's obvious her number one concern is your oral and mental health, she puts even the hugest scaredy-cat (*cough* me *cough*) at ease, her staff is supportive/nonjudgmental, they always work with you and your insurance (so so so helpful) even though they're not crazy expensive, and they never try to upsell you on services even though they treat you like you're a member of some luxury diamond-encrusted-platinum-elite club. Oh yeah, and there's a cool view from her office downtown. The long version: When I first went to her it was because I read Mel's review (thank you, Mel!) and had this baby tooth I thought needed to come out because it was loose. After doing my x-rays she discovered that I had a dead tooth (excuse me, two dead teeth) that I never knew about, and those bad boys needed immediate root canals. It gets better; one was my front tooth, and the other was an adjacent tooth. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say I've never been more surprised in my life. I basically went into a PTSD-style shut down. She saw this panic, took a step back and was like, "I know you're freaked out, how about we schedule another appointment and we can get to know each other a little more and figure out a plan?" To me, this made all the difference. It showed me that she not only cared about trying to help me (I'm sure a lot of dentists do), but she knew *how* to make me comfortable and was willing to go the extra mile to ensure I was okay with what was happening. My TERRIFIED self showed up a week later, she took me through everything, and we went ahead with scheduling an appointment I had walked in there convinced I wasn't going to make. But what we all really want to know is; How was the actual procedure? It was painless. She told me it was going to be before we did it, but I just couldn't wrap my mind around the idea of painless root canals. Afterwards I went back to work like nothing had happened. Seriously. As a matter of fact, I'm going to have that baby tooth extracted (remember, from like, 6 paragraphs ago?) and I'm 0% scared. That's a very small percentage of scared for something that should probably make me like 419% scared. Lastly, her staff is excellent. I mean, I know them by name, and I'm not an especially extroverted person. Beverly holds your hand over the phone while she walks you through scheduling your first appointment and you're like, "Ohmagawd, I'm so scared, what's gonna happen to me?" and Stacy, Dr. Ducan Friedman's assistant treats me like I'm her neighbor coming over for coffee when I walk in the door. As mentioned in other reviews, personal callbacks and hugs (if you seem scared) after appointments are standard, and they even bring my bf coffee while he waits for me in the lobby during my early morning appointments. So, anyway, the conclusion of this lengthy review is that helping others feels pretty good, and I'm never going to make New Year's resolutions again. The end. read more

Atlas Dental Specialists always provides efficient, professional, friendly care. I've been going there for many years and have always been happy with both the care and the results. Mara Mangini is an excellent dentist who always takes time to explain what she's doing and answer questions; she and Spenser are a great team and make you feel very confident that you're getting good care. I needed a small adjustment last week after receiving a new crown and they fit me into the schedule quickly and took the time to make sure everything was done right. As for Dr. Mara and Dr. Nick Mangini they are great, as well. Dr. Mara takes time to get to know her patients and is good at what she does. I trust her professional opinion when it comes to my teeth- I've never felt pressured to get work done or have an extra service add to my cleaning. She has over seen my Invisalign treatment and I could not be happier with the end results! The people are wonderful! That being said, I went in as a new patient expecting to have my teeth cleaned same visit. Instead, I just had the evaluation and X-rays done along with photographs in every direction possible. I would NOT have chosen this dentist had I known cleaning your teeth is an additional scheduled apt. My frustration stems from stating I was going as a new patient to get my 6 mo. teeth cleaning apt and no one letting me know they don't operate like that until my apt was 3/4 over. I was told every dentist does this, but I have been to others since moving frequently and have never had to schedule a second apt to clean my teeth. I don't have the time, nor do I want to pay another $15+ dollars in parking to have an apt in a few weeks. Unfortunately, even with the very friendly staff, this dirty mouth is going elsewhere. read more

Dr. Duncan-Friedman is pretty awesome. Let's face it, most of us don't really enjoy going to the dentist, but it's a fact of life that every responsible adult should go. Kathy runs a very professional business. She has the latest equipment, and knows her stuff, going to conferences yearly to learn the latest industry trends. She has a team of 4-5 hygienists and assistants, so she can always get you scheduled, though they are generally very busy. If you miss your appointment, you'll need to wait a week or two to get back in unless it's an emergency. I can honestly say she's the best dentist I've had in my 30 years. My first visit to Atlas Dental culminated in one of my caps being torn out of my mouth during a routine cleaning. This occurred after having taken x-rays of my entire mouth which clearly indicated the location of any caps or crowns. Possibly the best part of this encounter was the dental hygienist rudely stating that it was not her fault and "this could have just as easily happened while I was eating at a restaurant" while holding the sharp hooked instrument in her hand. Dr. "Nick" was astute enough to realize that his employee had made a mistake when he stated that "she had ripped out my tooth" and kindly offered to put it back in free of charge; however, the doctor drilling on the tooth before realizing that particular tooth had NOT had a root canal (the giveaway may have been my muffled noise of pain... or the x-ray of the tooth showing the nerve still intact) made my visit complete. I was not offered any sort of discount on my service after having endured unnecessary pain and spending an extra 90 minutes in the office. A very unprofessional visit to say the least! read more

I found Dr. Duncan Friedman on my insurance site for an emergency Consultation since I was in Pittsburgh from out of town. Her staff fit me into her busy schedule for the same day. I was able to get a follow-up appointment (very challenging) but ended up getting the work done quicker at my family dentist in Cincinnati. She has an interesting sense of humor but I can say cares about her patients and has decent technology. She was very friendly. She is so popular that it is hard to schedule appointments. I despise going to the dentist. Many a childhood trauma, combined with a recommendation in adolescence that I have my jaw broken and wired shut for six weeks to correct an underbite (no thank you), left me hesitant to even have a tooth cleaning. Which I didn't. For about four years. (I do not recommend this path). I finally decided to bite the bullet and looked to Yelp for reviews. I was blown away by how highly reviewed Dr. Friedman was. I decided to give her a shot - she was only a few blocks away from my office, and accepted my insurance. As you can imagine, that first cleaning in years was not pretty or painless. But there was no judgment from any of the staff - just excellent care and compassion towards a new patient. I have continued going to Atlas for a few years now, and have recommended them to many friends. After being in Pittsburgh for a few years, I needed to find a dentist. This process got sped up when I broke a tooth over the weekend. I stumbled upon Dr. Friedman and couldn't be happier. I called Monday and they were able to see me that evening so she could "do her homework" (see my tooth and figure out a plan of action) and sit down and just meet and talk with me. They got me in for my crown the following day, and even had space so I could get my teeth cleaned as well. She is very nice and professional, even encouraging me to have my dad call her if he had any questions about charges and she would speak with him directly as she understood how it was to be a parent with kids living out of state and didn't want him to feel like she was taking advantage of me. I've been going to Atlas for many years now, and finally had a more involved procedure - a dental crown - done by Dr. Mara today, and the process was seamless! The staff was amazing and I was kept in the loop throughout the entire process from start to finish. I even got to watch my new tooth be chiseled to perfection in the mindblowing technology. Atlast Dental is really fantastic. They are very modern, with text/email appointment reminders and the latest technologies for x-rays, tooth cameras, etc. Angela is such a fantastic hygienist and Dr. Nick (there are two Dr. Manginis, so he is Dr. Nick to differentiate!) is super efficient and nice. They both always taking the time to answer any questions I might have and show me, rather than tell. For example, I have been grinding my teeth in my sleep and Angela was able to snap photos using a tiny camera and to show me the photographs of my teeth on the screen above the chair right then to point out the grinding. They recently renovated their office, so it is larger with a more comfortable waiting area. Everyone working there from dentists to receptionists are kind and helpful. 5 stars! read more

I went to Dr. Duncan Friedman for several years and overall I think she is a terrific person. Same can be said for her staff. I was probably one of the most difficult patients ever. I no-showed, cancelled last minute, called for urgent appointments, like generally the worst. Any other practice might have banned me or at least called me out for my crappy behavior but the staff was just so nice to me. They did a great job taking care of my mouth and Dr. Duncan Friedman was so always patient and understanding with me. I'd put off certain non-essential procedures and she'd gently remind me of them without pressuring me and would even tell other staff to stop hassling me if she overheard them lecturing me. Generally, a great lady. Also, Stacy the hygienist is the bomb dot com. I genuinely loved seeing her when I went for visit. I did have a couple of strange experiences that helped nudged me to switch practices. A few years ago, I was laid off. Naturally, I had to tell the practice as my insurance had changed. A few weeks later I found out that an acquaintance I referred to the practice years ago had been told by the staff at this practice that I'd lost my job. I'm sure this was mentioned as part of small talk but I found it a bit violating. I wasn't advertising from the rooftops that I'd lost my job and having my business make it to people I barely talked to bummed me out. I never confronted them about it and I'm sure it was an innocent mistake but still not totally professional. I got a much better job a few months later so water under the bridge. Second, Dr. Duncan Friedman has been joined by her daughter and son in law at the practice. The last routine cleaning I had started well enough. The hygienist wasn't my favorite but she was fine. Then son in law Dr. Mangini came to look at my teeth. He looked them over and then announces that the biggest thing he notices is that my smile is unattractive. Oh, alright. He tells me my gums are hiding my teeth and my smile is much too gummy and I can have surgery to remove some of my gums. Apparently, I actually have "normal" size teeth; they're just hidden by my gross gums. He asks if I have any interest in doing anything about this. I firmly say "No." Undeterred, he continues telling me about the strides in this surgery, the short recovery time, how much better I'd look post procedure. Here's the thing, I don't wear makeup, I was wearing running clothes, I just generally don't give a crap what I look like. If I can't be bothered to put a comb through my hair, I certainly am not going to have my gums chopped off to improve my smile. Thanks, dude, but I'm good. He finally leaves then the hygienist starts in about how her girlfriend had this procedure done and she looks so much better. I'm just sitting there dumbfounded, trying not to cry. It's one thing to let people know what options are available to them; it's another to berate them about a problem that doesn't exist in their life. It was like going to your PCP and having them say "Oh my, it looks like you're only an A cup. You know there's a procedure available to fix that! The recovery time is nothing! You'd look so much better! Seriously, think about it!" Overall, I'm glad Dr. Duncan Friedman took such good care of me and I will miss her. However, in the end, dental visits are uncomfortable enough as it is and I decided it was time to check out another practice. People who enjoy a friendly, warm environment would love this practice where hugs are freely exchanged. And, individuals who are concerned with their dental aesthetics would be great fits as well. read more

I've given Atlas 5 stars on Google but after my most recent visit, which was a root canal done by the amazing Dr. Duncan, I wanted to write one here. After not going to a dentist in years after a terribly done root canal and eventual botched extraction at a different office, I tried Atlas. Since then, I've had multiple cavities filled, two cleanings and now two root canals. While there was a mixup/mistake with my insurance and Atlas that forced me to pay $300 I wasn't expecting to pay, I still came back. That alone should be a testament to how nice everyone here is and the quality of work they do here. read more
