Been my comic shop for nearly two decades. I often miss the days when the shop was bigger and gaming tables were filled with people waiting to play but the vibe is still there. Staff is friendly and, if store traffic allows, eager to nerd out over recent releases or new movies. It took me a while to write a review for Atomic City Comics, mostly because I know how fiercely loyal people are to their comic book stores, and how obnoxious I might seem as a tourist to say anything--even positive--about a place I visited once in a city I've only been to once. But here we are. Atomic City Comics has a wonderful wonderful selection. And the staff was great at finding stuff. Name something, and they were on their feet, beelining to where it should be instantly. The layout of the store is great as well, lots of shelves for trawling, as well as lots of toys, games, clothes, etc. Just a perfect, classic comic book store. The thing that started to get to me was the service (and I know I just praised the service, please bear with me). My guy and I were looking for something that fit our tastes, to read at the hotel. But no matter what examples we gave the young man who helped us, he would inevitably suggest something totally not in our interest. We would rattle off as many horror titles/authors/artists as we could think of, and he would immediately show us some indie comic about every day life. Repeatedly. Not only that, but he pushed the $200 hardcover collector's edition of one of his favorites (which had a suggested soundtrack of a bunch bands we didn't know or care about). I know he meant well, and I'd rather be helped by someone who at least had an opinion, than someone who doesn't like comics at all. But seriously dude, if we didn't show interest in your favorite comic the first 10 times, we're not going to change our mind the 11th time you suggest it. Also, he seemed horrified that we did not share his tastes in music, and when he found out we were from nyc, he started up with all these comments about PBR and hipsters that I barely understood. By the time we left ("escaped his clutches" sounds a bit too dramatic), we both had kind of a bad taste in our mouth from the whole experience. I would still 100% recommend you visit Atomic City. It was a great place, and should be supported by locals and tourists alike. Despite its relative size (real estate is at a premium in this district), they have made the most of it in no uncertain terms. That is to say, every square inch is maximized to utter perfection and efficiency with comics, TPBs, toys, books, film, the usual geek chic fare. I mean, damn...it was extremely comprehensive, organized to a 'T', and easy to navigate. Particularly impressed at the graphic novels as single issues are arguably more profitable. Staff was impeccable, very knowledgeable, but most importantly, professional. Ambiance is what you'd expect for a comic books store, but somehow possessed of more bells and whistles which is saying something given their relative space. Of all the comic stores I have been in, even the ones that have earned my loyalty back home for decades, this is undisputedly my favorite. A model business in a very difficult industry to be sure of. Went there the other day to pick up a copy of Invincible. Really big and clean store. The best part is that they have a few arcade games. I played a few really good games of Street Fighter Zero 3 and got beat narrowly by one of the employees who was using Sakura. I must go back to defend my honor. Atomic City is the reason I take a couple hours out of my day every week to go down to South Street for my comics. The staff are super friendly and always willing to talk to me about the latest horror movies or classes I'm taking or really anything else, and there are great discounts for subscribers: 30% off all your subscriptions and 20% off any other comics and graphic novels. Be sure to bring cash, because card minimum is $10, and if you're getting these subscriber discounts, you might not be spending more than that. read more

I have given this place so many chances to not disappoint me but it's clear that the people who work there really just want to hang out amongst themselves, rather than do any form of work. I have gone in there on days when the store was almost empty aside from the four staff members watching Akira. I asked if they could help me find something, and I was told to " just wait a minute". I took my friend from out if town there and when my friends girlfriend asked for a recommendation some short bald neck beard proceeded to hit on here and then pull that " real fans" bit when she said she liked the XMen movies. In general the staff is rude. When they checked my bag once i found it over turned and I had a chip on my iPad screen, after telling them I'd like to hang onto it because my iPad was in there. They told me it'd be fine and then of course, chipped screen. I tried to tell somebody there about it , not asking for a refund or anything other than for them to be more mindful. I was told they aren't responsible for others belongings...which is not the case of you required me to chek my bags. The only reason I go in there is that it's close to work and I can grab a comic or something on my way home. But the staff are rude ad condescending and consistently having loud conversations like the time they slut shamed somebody they saw at comic con about how she was " too big" for that costume. Overall I've resolved to go to brave new worlds. The staff there spent an hour on the phone for me to special order a single issue for me. Atomic is a club house and if you aren't their friend or a staff member you get bad service. read more

As two queer women walking into a comic shop, my girlfriend and I were very hesitant to ask for recommendations... but the guy behind the desk was very friendly, and immediately gave us 8 different recommendations. And they've been pretty stellar so far! We bought three and then went back two days later to buy three more. On our second visit, we met even more nice staff. gary gygax would have loved to have chilled in this place with fellow larpers, warhammer, vampire masquerade, pokemon, magic the gathering players. (for you D&D fans, such as myself, RIP to gary gygax, the adventure continues). this comic place is not in my favorite location. south street. but, like the showcase tradition, this place carries all the standard fare, but also, has a table for people to play the above games i mentioned. they sell figurines, manuals, independent label comics, and they do have a $2 dollar comic bin. the staff is friendly, but this place is tiny! also, it attracts a lot of little kids here. prolly due to the location. also, this place always has the faint smell of junk food, fast food, and BO. so beware! but i do love all the roleplaying games and sometimes the comic con artists stop here! bonus! the last time i was here, i picked up the manga collection museum of terror (i recommend if you are into creepy japanese girls who don't die) and was walking back home, when i was almost hit by a car on pine street! the car smashed into another car and the impacted car's glass shattered all over my leg, cutting me and the collided car almost ran into me. i was pushed out of the way! the things i endure to pick up my comics! i really should start ordering online! read more

South Streets comic shop is a decent one. They have a fantastic selection of trade paperbacks and manga. There is a solid wall of new issues and a good mix of toys and memorabilia. There isn't much of a back issue section and they only have a handful of overpriced vintage issues so come here for trade books and manga. There's an old school marvel arcade game that will bring back the memories of playing at the arcade in the 90's. read more

I really like this place. They have a really good selection of trades and back issues and all the new stuff too. The other day when I went in the had a Michael Jackson Moonwalker arcade cabinet. I'm not sure if it was a tribute or if it had been there for years, but regardless it inspired me to buy Walking Dead vols 4 & 5 in the hopes in a Thriller like act of reanimation the king of pop would make one last appearance. I haven't seen him yet, but I just started vol 5 so watch this space for updates. read more

Walking into Atomic City Comics I liked how it had a coffee area with tables and chairs for the ability to just sit and relax. It has a 90's vibe to it where the owner has a tv behind the counter and I was thrilled to see (or more so, my boyfriend was thrilled to see) old arcade games from the 90's consisting of the X-Men, Spider-Man, and Punisher games. MY boyfriend Chris was excited to play the Spider-Man game for old times sake. Their selection of trades and manga is up there as their strongest attribute, but overall the store was welcoming. I liked their display for shirts and the small area at the end of the store for back issues. Worth a visit especially that it's on a nice stretch of Philly with other cool places to check out. read more

I'm not really into superhero comics or manga so most comic book stores are a disappointment to me. Atomic has a decent selection and I do appreciate the sparceness of their backissues (usually they take up way too much space in a store). The reason I gave them a 5 star (instead of 4) is the helpfulness of the staff and just how friendly they were. Being a woman in a comic book shop does not necessarily earn you extra attention. So I was pleasantly pleased by the warm welcome extended to me, my dad and my baby. read more

As it stands I was NEVER into comic books as a kid...that was my brother's thing. However, in my adult years I became turned onto the graphic novel and have found a wealth of interesting stories told with both the written word and the artist's brush. Needless to say, when I first walked in here I feared that I wouldn't fit in...ya know...surrounded by folks that can tell you what happened to what superhero in what issue of a given comic...the kind of guys that know the names of all the comic writers, artists, etc. Well...let's just say I was proved wrong right from the start because the young men that run Atomic City are world class in every way and make every customer feel valued. Not sure what you're looking for? These guys will take the time to help you find something...whether it's for you or a gift for someone else matters not...the boys are enthusiastic and helpful...but never pushy. Just want to browse the shelves quietly...go right ahead...they won't mind one bit. I think the thing that really makes Atomic City great is the fact that they clearly appreciate their customers and make every effort to show it. They've even begun a tradition of having customers come in to watch new episodes of television adaptation of the graphic novel series "The Walking Dead". Folks show up and scarf pizza and soda while getting in touch with their inner geek! The crowd is always diverse but united by their love of the shop and those that make it the land mark that it is. These guys are my favorite comic book store in the Tri-State area, hands down. Their wall of new releases is easy to navigate, and their selection of new and older graphic novels is tastefully curated. As an added bonus, they've got the best selection of manga in Philadelphia. They're female friendly, gamer friendly, and artist friendly. The staff is really good at making recommendations, but they won't try to pressure you into anything. I always have the best conversations here, but customers never get ignored because the staff is preoccupied. It's always a pleasure to visit - and they have awesome free bookmarks! read more

This is a great location for a comic book store. They have every thing in here, even arcade machines in the back for you to play with. They also have tables and chairs in the front for customers if you want to play games, read or eat snacks. They have a large selection of anime books and other comic books. They're pretty friendly in here. The workers usually stay behind the counter most of the time.. The only semi negative thing about this place is the Iow selections on their individual mtg cards. Also I was charged $10 for tax which I thought was pretty high for what I was getting. Other than that, no complaints so far! Recommend to anyone ! read more

Really big selection. If you're looking for a specific comic, graphic novel, or manga, they're likely to have it. The only downside is the pricing. A graphic novel that costs $20 on amazon might cost $30 here. An imported action figure you can get for $50 on ebay might cost $90 or $100 here. If you're in the area though, it's definitely worth checking out. I would recommend this place. read more

The largest appeal for me to keep coming into Atomic City is the ambiance. The staff are friendly and are always watching something cool, listening to something awesome, or having some awesome comic-related conversation/debate. If they don't have what you're looking for (typical for me, who is always looking for obscure or out-of-print independent comics and graphic novels) they will find it for you AND recommend something in a similar vein for you. I used to come in just to play their Arcade games (and had some nice conversations with complete strangers.) They keep their current releases well stocked, they have a nice selection of t-shirts and toys, graphic novels/anthologies, independents, and manga. It is not very often that the typical South St audience comes in and ruins the vibe of your shopping experience, because everything else surrounding you in the store is so awesome. read more

This shop is a must-stop for any walk down South street. There's usually a movie or cartoon playing on the big screen, theres a few playable arcade machines (which get mad cool points) and many art and comic books to browse. They also carry boardgames, trinkets, toys, and masks/props. The boardgames are a little on the expensive side, but theres no where else to go! I havent gone to any events at Atomic, although I believe they do host or schedule some get togethers. Very fun place to visit and browse. read more

Honestly, they have everything related to comics and more. They have comics and also manga. They have toys and other collectibles. They have a street fighter alpha arcade cabinet. There is nothing to complain about. I am not a hardcore comicbook fan but I always end up staying for more than half an hour just because of all the products they have to offer. I am very impressed. The only suggest that I would make is... Have some other arcade cabinet... instead of street fighter. read more
