Even though our family ultimately chose a community closer to my parents' home, I want to recognize the exceptional support we received from Marcelle, the Atria Senior living community sales director. From the very beginning, she was incredibly informative about the care options available and took the time to understand the specific needs of my parents. We were navigating a stressful and emotional period while my father was still hospitalized, and Marcelle's compassion made a real difference. Her follow‑up was outstanding--she consistently checked in, made herself available to answer every question, and offered guidance without ever making us feel pressured. What truly impressed us was that she even reached out months later to see how my parents were doing, despite knowing we had selected another facility. Marcelle is knowledgeable, caring, and genuinely dedicated to helping families through difficult transitions. Marcelle was fantastic...she really took a lot of care to make sure my mother-in-law felt warmly welcomed and comfortable in her new home after recently losing her husband. She even helped us source some wonderful furniture from another resident who was moving and truly went above and beyond in all capacities. The rest of the staff has also been graciously caring, kind, helpful and welcoming. We were surprised to know that many of them have been there for over two decades and they are still smiling and seem to enjoy their work - which says a lot about this place. The residents appear well cared for and content. Everything is clean, the decor is lovely, and there are lots of great amenities. Very happy we found this wonderful place! I took my dear friend on a tour of Atria Hillcrest. My cousin and a friend both enjoyed living there. I thought it would be a good choice for my friend. Marcelle took us on the tour. It took very little to convince us this was the right choice. We met Marcelle's mother who is a resident there. She looks extremely happy. Marcelle did a great job showing us the beautiful property. It is reasonably priced for the amenities . My friend isn't ready yet but will move in when she is ready. read more

My husband and I toured this lovely facility with my mother recently and found it to be everything we were looking for in an assisted living community. Not only is it beautiful and well-maintained both inside and out, but the residents are happy and engaged from all we could see. Great entertainment on the day we were there! The caregivers we met while touring were super sweet and very enthusiastic about their jobs, many sharing that they have been there 20 years or more(!) and that the community is like a family. My mother has been a resident here since November 2017. The entire staff, including caregivers, housekeepers, medical personnel, maintenance staff and the Director (Sarah Dodd) work tirelessly to make their residents happy and comfortable. Sahilly, the activities director, and her staff are so wonderful and have kept the residents entertained and active over the last 18 months of the pandemic. The med tech staff are always there to help both residents and family members. My mother moved upstairs to the Life Guidance Unit in January 2021 because her Alzheimer's has progressed. I was nervous at first, but quickly became as comfortable with the caregiver's and other staff in that unit. EVERYONE in that area has a special place in heaven reserved for them. I have seen them on numerous occasions treat the residents with such loving care and respect. Just recently, my mom fell and broke her ankle and had to go to a rehab facility. It was a horrible experience and I wanted my mom to go back to Atria as soon as possible where I knew she would receive the care and respect she deserved; her memory issues worsened in the 4+ weeks she was there. Sarah Dodd was instrumental in getting my mom released back to Atria. She took personal time to go up to the rehab facility and see my mom, assess her for herself, gather the needed docs including a negative Covid test... all before the start of her workday at 9 am, at Atria! She will always hold a special place in our heart for taking charge of a nightmare situation and getting mom back to her safe and loving environment at Atria Hillcrest. The food is wonderful there, too. The chef really cares about what the residents think and makes regular rounds thru the dining room to check on each of his guests. Pre-pandemic, me and my family were regular guests in the dining room, with Sunday brunches being some of our favorite meals! Chef David and his staff make Holidays very special, too! I could go on and on, but the most important thing I can tell you is that we have never regretted having mom move into Atria Hillcrest and feel very comfortable knowing she is safe and being well cared for. read more

If you have a loved one who needs Memory Care, this is the place. The staff here is incredible. Jael, the director is a powerhouse of positivity and energy. She is passionate about caring for her clients. Her program is so well thought out and focused on her clients well being. An example is she's structured highs and lows into the day around older people's energy levels and things like sundowners. So late afternoons she will do aroma therapy with soft music, or hand massages to calm anxiety. It is such a loving environment, bright, clean and full of activity. Jael's staff is equally loving and caring. It truly feels like a family there. I love the fact that my Mom gets many hugs each day and is treated with respect and love. read more

My dad lived here for a couple years and on the whole, my family were very disappointed with the experience. On the pro side, the building and the rooms are really nicely appointed and the food is pretty good. It creates a good impression when you arrive and is reassuring. This was one of the key factors in why our family chose Atria and I suspect that's the case with most residents. But what really left a bad taste in our mouth was the level of greed on the part of the company management. The charges for "services" (most of which should be included with the hefty monthly rent) are numerous and exorbitant. They even want visitors to pay a dollar for snacks in the bistro bar (insulting). The annual fee hikes are outrageous, too. If my business raised its fees 5%+ per year, our clients would fire us. But if you're Atria, that's just "smart business," as one of their tone-deaf letters coldly announced. And the staff often exhibited little common sense. There were several occasions in which they called an ambulance for my father when he had little more than a headache, or was hungry, or the wind blew his hair out of place, and the ER physicians found nothing wrong with him. A couple of ibuprofen and a sandwich would have done the trick. Instead, we got saddled with thousands in ambulance fees and many wasted hours. This is a symptom of an organization with a totally corporate, CYA attitude that does not allow for good judgement. There are good people there and I can only imagine how hard it is to run a facility of that type. But the residents and families deserve better. read more

My mother was here for 3 yrs. Two years on the main floor. One year in Memory Care. Absolutely awful experience. High staff turnover including management. Phone calls to staff are not returned. Took Mom down to the dining room on her birthday and ordered her favorite fish, tilapia, for her. Waitress tells me she doesn't eat that! Eats only Mexican food and brought her a taco salad! Mom NEVER ate Mexican food and wound up not eating her birthday lunch! Many clothing items and her cane went missing. Multiple trips to the ER due to falls instead of calling hospice first, which voided hospice each time! Broken hip under their care. The final straw was an employee moving her wheelchair before picking up her feet. Propelled her onto her head! Another trip to the ER and never called me! Absolutely awful! Do yourself a favor and find a decent board and care facility. More personal care and more reasonably priced. read more

My Father has been a resident here for about 9-10 months. Since he has been here I have seen a steady decline in his general demeanor. He appears to be less sociable - has very few friends and I don't know if it is because they forget to put in his hearing aids - don't assist him as much since he is practically blind due to his macular degeneration or just because the quality of care is lacking in many aspects. The communication between Atria and his family ( me - his daughter ) is non-existent . No one ever calls me re: any issues he may have and when I call no one ever calls me back. I would not recommend this place especially since we pay for top quality care but get very poor quality of care. My biggest issue is the non-communication. I purchased a television rack to be installed and asked multiple times if that is something that maintenance would do. I've asked 3 times and I still do not know one way or the other if that is something that department would do for us. COMMUNICATION. COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATION !!!!!!! We had such high hopes but unfortunately they have not been realized. read more

My 89-year-old mom has been a resident at Atria Hillcrest for less than a month, so time will tell if the facility continues to excel. So far they have been wonderful. All the staff I have met have been friendly, caring and solicitous. I want especially to give a shout out to Don Saunders, the sales director. Don went above and beyond in the process leading up to my mom's admission, and his communication was great, even regarding issues outside his "job description." AH appears to be a clean and homey space, and the residents I have met have been friendly and welcoming to my mom, who is having understandable difficulty transitioning from living independently in a large home to assisted living and caretaking in a small apartment, but even after just a few weeks she seems to be adjusting well. I think she will be happy having a community in which she can make friends, rather than continuing to live a lonely life in her prior home. I do have to say that the cost is very high (although not out of line with similar local facilities). Basic room/board is just about $5,000/month (for 1bdrm), and the expense of medication mgmt (which is no more than dispensing oral meds) and other "care" (stand-by assistance for showering, etc.) has added over $3,500 to that base cost. These addt'l expenses seem very high to me-which explains the 4 stars-so I will investigate why the costs are so high further. I'll update my review after a few mos., but so far I am mostly very happy with the staff especially. read more

I have read many of the reviews for Atria Hillcrest and understand why several of the reviews are negative. With that being said, yes, Atria Hillcrest is not for everyone. However, our family is extremely impressed with Atria and the services they provide. I guess it depends on your approach as well as your individual needs. My mother is 93 years old and has been a resident for over 1 year now and to be honest, I feel that Atria has saved her life and has given her several new friends. The staff is very friendly and has become part of our family. My mother's apartment is clean and safe, the food is healthy and the complex is maintained extremely well. Almost a year and a half ago, my family was put into a situation where we needed to find a "living" alternative for our parents.  There have 4 things to comment on.   First off, Dana Holden was our "sales" person.  She was one of the most amazing people I have ever had the privilege to work with.   Her kindness was immediately palpable.  Dana's brilliant smile lit up a room and her heart warms us on the coldest days.  Thank you for Dana!   I want to mention Sarah Dodd.  Sarah is so smart and so "resident focused" sometimes I could witness her absolute compassion for the resident AND their families.  She moves mountains, creates family rather than just people who live there and she leads a team that works, day to day, in unimaginable circumstances.  Thank you for Sarah!   Working with Denise Watkins .  The heart that she demonstrates each and every day is magical.  Denise makes dark days bright, cold days warm, and when people feel lost, Denise makes them feel found.   I know that During my Mom's last days were filled with knowing she was loved.  What more could we ask for?  Thank you for Denise.    As finally, thank you for "EVERYONE ATRIA".  From the chef to the front desk manager.  From the housekeepers to the daily attendants - Sarah trains and supports here people well.  The every day care and the kindness demonstrated is noticed, appreciated, and revered.   Thank you for the team.   Again, thank you Atria for being our guides through these unimaginable times. read more

We needed respite care for my mom and they made it happen very quickly. Is everything perfect? No. But the staff bent over backwards to make things as comfortable as possible in a very short time span. Covid precautions made her experience atypical, but as these things go, seems like a good place. read more

Horrible place! Please please please don't leave your loved one here! My mother became very despondent after living here. Not only that but she was completely ignored and had one infection after another, her room was not cleaned and her shower was broken. Found her dirty, wearing the same outfit 3 days after visiting her. She was eating a cookie because she was too exhausted to go down to breakfast and no one checked on her. She could have died! My mother lived here for two years until she was finally forced out because they couldn't take care of her any more because of advancing dementia. This Atria is assisted living, meaning you have to be able to get along mostly on your own, with some help with dressing, hygiene and incontinence. When Mom started showing daily signs of confusion, disorientation, and sobbing in public places, they handled it all quite well but said she was taking up too much staff time and required memory care. They were right. Their own memory care facility, "upstairs" is a mere holding pen, a horror to behold (in my opinion). You don't want an assisted living place that does memory care "on the side." If you need memory care, you need memory care. Atria Hillcrest strengths: lovely facility, good location, excellent, above-average dining experience. Activities are good when they happen, but can be spotty. The building is locked and it feels like a prison in there. Very dreary. They need to replace their filthy carpets. The staff is remarkably good but over-stretched and not really trained for memory care. They've had a lot of turnover and cutbacks in the first 6 months of 2017, including at the executive level and now it's very difficult to get anybody's attention. There is virtually no internal communication. If you tell a staff member or a supervisor something, it's like talking into a well. No messages are transmitted, nothing is remembered. Likewise, every person you talk to will give you a different answer to any question. The price is a little high but not out of line for this region, and automatically goes up 5% a year rain or shine. Think about that. If you are relatively high-functioning and need only "assisted living" this is like living in a Holiday Inn. But what does the future hold? You're not going to get younger, and if you survive, at some point you'll probably have to move somewhere else. read more

My mother Rose Bliman is the longest surviving resident at Atria Hillcrest. Her 21 years at the same location is testament to the excellent care that this facility provides. In great measure, I owe my mother's longevity to Atria's friendly housekeepers, attentive servers, engaging activities director, considerate drivers, caring MAs, conscientious nurses, effective medical director (Urbano), and amazing executive director (Jane). For example, when a terminal illness threatened Rose's quality of life, Jane promptly helped us arrange an incredibly smooth transition to palliative care that is restoring the comfort, joy, and dignity of my mother's remaining days. My Mom has lived in this facility for 11 years. We moved her to the new "Life Guidance" floor last year - she was one of the first residents of the new floor. She has been a guinea pig from the start. They have had five different directors on the floor since it's inception. They have not come through with the level of care that was promised. We are paying $6800 per month - that is "Rolls Royce" level care. We are receiving -at best - Volkswagon level care. The memory care unit is grossly understaffed and staff quits on a weekly basis. (As do there Directors - as I stated above.) Call the Atria and when you are put on hold - listen to their "glowing description" of what the Life Guidance floor has to offer. It is a complete joke. We are currently being forced to relocate my Mother due to the gross lack of care. If you have a family member with any form of dementia - you must know that moving them is the last thing you want to do. Especially if your hand is forced to do so. We have been waiting since September 14th for any one in management to contact us about our concerns. They have not. We went in at 9 am today - there is not one level of management in the entire building - AGAIN. Run, don't walk - to find your loved one a different place. You will be doing your loved one a great service to NOT have them live here. read more

The best part about this living facility is that the staff really does care about it's residents. Maria, Martha, Stacy, Lupe, Alfredo, Emily-everyone here truly cares about the residents and it shows in everything they do. Everyone is very friendly. There are many rooms that are able to be customized for the resident, and some have balconies that look out onto beautiful grounds. There is so much for the residents to do here-every day the Engage Life staff comes up with new activities or fun games. Your loved one will be in good hands here at Atria Hillcrest should you choose to have them live here. read more

Mom has been at Atria Hillcrest for a year and a half, and her experience has been all we hoped for. The facility is well maintained inside and out. The food may not make it to Conde-Nast, but is tasty, nutritious, well prepared and nicely presented. There are numerous activities and excursions covering a wide range of interests and abilities. As important as all that is, it is the staff that really make a difference. From the receptionists to the dining room, to the activities, to the room attendants they are pleasant and dedicated people who genuinely care for the residents and work to make Atria a pleasant place to live. Are there problems and snafus? Certainly, but they are almost always dealt with quickly. It gives me great peace of mind that mom is so well cared for. read more

We decided to move our parent to the other Atria in Thousand Oaks and couldn't be more pleased. The management and staff changes too often at the Hodencamp location, something I find especially disturbing since seniors with dementia rely upon consistency and do not do well with change. My mother has severe dementia and resides at Atria Hillcrest. Having her live at Atria gives me tremendous peace of mind. I know she is well cared for at all times. I am a private investigator and have gone to some very sad senior living facilities for work so I have a point of reference. Recently, my mother has fallen several times. Tosha and Lena were so fantastic in handling the crisis that occurred in my presence. They were calm, caring, and professional. In addition, Martha (new Director of Facilty) is wonderful.
