The bartenders are very friendly and ask what you typically drink to get an idea of what kind of cocktail they can create for you. Locals describe it as a speak easy but there isn't a unique way of entering the bar. You'll be greeted by a "please lock gently" sign only to find out that they can't hear you past the bumping 90's hip hop. The concept is great with no menu and great mixologists that work off your favorite spirit. All of our drinks had names and the server said they have about 200 recipes they base your order from. I wanted to continue a conversation I started with someone in line (they were seated at the other end of the bar), but I felt like I wasn't allowed to get out of my seat, stand in their gloriously empty space, and have a conversation with someone not directly next to me. I'm not sure they would have cared, but I felt stupid asking and they really have this sense of control over what you do where you stand and what you drink. A group of friends and I went to Attaboy. We had a group of 9 so we were told we had split tables- which is understandable since it's a large group. We had no problem with this. Our group separated into two tables as we were told to do so. The server came to our table and was extremely rude (server was named Natalie). We were a bit taken back by this but stayed for our drinks. As we were enjoying our drinks, Natalie came to our table and aggressively said we needed to leave asap. Her reasoning was bc one of the member of our group went to the other table and chatted with part of our group. We were in shock with Natalie's tone and aggressiveness- esp since our group has worked in the service industry for over 10 years. Never have I dealt with this type of disrespect. Attaboy, a modern speakeasy, attempts to inject a little mystery into the artisan cocktail scene by offering craft cocktails designed after one-on-one discussions over your preferences. However, the idea falls flat, especially when it comes time to pay! Attaboy has a great first impression, if you time your arrival correctly. True to its speakeasy roots, the entrance can only be opened from the inside, hopefully by a staff member. If you're unlucky enough to walk in while the door is being held open by a leaving guest, the speakeasy facade loses charm and you may be at a loss on where to go. Seating is limited. For my entire stay, among a party of three, we never made it past the waiting benches! Our entire time drinking $14 cocktails was on benches designed for spinal reconstruction patients, with hard wooden backs. And the $14 cocktails- that is correct. For having no idea for what you're getting (or paying), be prepared to shell out for the "mystery" game! I left disappointed. We all did. We got in after 10mins of waiting, which wasn't too bad. In general, this bar caters the customized experience, which means they don't have a set drink menu. The server would ask for your drink preference and design a drink for you! I loved both of the drink that I got, they both were very different but very tasty. My friend knew what he wanted, a Martini and Negroni, and he said they both tasted very good, very high quality compared to other places. If I am headed out with a friend, I want a place where we can chat and have a good drink or two. Each drink is $14. So yes, it's pricey, but it's also custom. You pay more for your custom jeans, right? So why not for your drinks! I know I just wrote a review about the new Nashville prices and I still stand behind my dislike of $20 grain bowls. Also, $14 for a craft cocktail really isn't that out of range. I paid $19 for a martini at the Palm once. I will never forget it and I won't go back, but the point is that this isn't crazy. The prices make sense for what you are getting. You are paying for individual service, customized to your liking, and a fun, intimate atmosphere. The bartender even took back a drink my friend didn't like and made her another free of charge. This place is it! It's also filling the void Holland House left when they closed. Last night we arrived to find out that there was a 20 minute wait and the bouncer took our phone number which was fine by us. He said that there were 9 parties ahead of us and he was going to call when we were at the top of the list. 50 minutes went by and no phone call or text so we went back to find out what was going on. When arriving at the entrance a younger couple got right in before us and a group of 7 people left. The bouncer however said that we would need to wait another hour or so because we had moved up one spot to number 8 on the list. Generally, you can describe a base spirit and a taste profile (citrus, refreshing, stirred/boozy), and they have a cocktail. The cocktails I have had here are stellar, and I keep coming back. I've been about ten times, and have enjoyed every one of those times. Love the people here. Some are from Attaboy in NYC, some are from here. The common thread is that they are all kind people who are amazing at what they do, but are continually striving to be the best at what they do. The dedication is inspiring. Decor makes me miss NYC. This is a pretty small place that mixes up some very special cocktails based upon the kind of alcohol and basic flavors you like in a cocktail. The drinks are pretty pricey (~$14 ea.), but the real drawback is the noise. There are no sound deadening features at all so when the place gets a little busy people have to yell to be heard by the people they are with. The louder they yell the noisier it gets, the noisier it gets the louder they yell. It got so loud and so uncomfortable that I was stuffing napkins in my ears. We had two cocktails that were delicious, but I could not stand to hang around for a third. If they can get the noise dampened down some, I'd give Attaboy five stars. After waiting in line for the bar to open, we were told our group of 8 could not enter (even after we suggested we could split up and sit at separate tables, etc. ) as Attaboy has a "rule" to not accept parties of 6 or larger? The disrespectful, pompous bouncer could not have been more condescending towards the situation and tried to explain the rule is in-place to create an "inclusive" environment. I've never heard of something so ridiculous. From there, we were practically forced out of line following some continued snarky remarks from said "bouncer". There are SO many fantastic cocktail bars in Nashville and this certainly is not one of them. I understand rules are rules but it was all in the delivery.
