I've watched Atwater's take over Belvedere Square inch by inch and stand by stand over the last ten years. It's nice that you can get all of their products from pretty much all of the tables, now. I don't make it up there nearly as often these days, but I did eat in other day, and the chicken soup and turkey biscuit hit the spot. It's definitely a bastion of privilege, make no mistake, but such is the price of quality and ethics in food out. A friend of mine who I was visiting this past weekend took me to Atwater's. The food was enjoyable - a lovely pork soup and a half of a pastrami sandwich. The menu is inventive. My major complaint is their prices are WAY overpriced to the point of being offensive. Atwater's charged 4.95 for half/9.50 for a whole sandwich. I was appalled at how tiny the sandwich was. It's not like a large hunk of bread or a roll or even a ton of meat. It was regular sandwich you might make at home. Coming from NY where you might pay the same price for a sandwich but you are actually getting some substance and certainly won't be hungry 30 minutes later. Giving Atwater's 4 stars because it is a fun place to explore. The food was just okay. I had the cabbage/pasta soup, my friend had chicken soup, and we shared a salad. Not the best soup I have eaten and I probably would not order the salad again. We also tried a scoop of the chicken salad and I do not know what the rave is about, would definitely not order it again. Great place. Several locations now but our favorite is the original at Belvedere Square. Breakfast is by far the best of what they do here. In particular, THE PANCAKES!!! Amazing!! We've been here many times for a seafood soup and veggie sandwich to eat at the counter or some soup to heat up at home. Fresh ingredients, great service. I am very picky about sandwich excellence, and they do a great job. We've been really into the grilled sandwiches lately, but any will do. Sometimes will order a chicken/turkey sandwich without the meat b/c the toppings are so interesting. And excellent bread! You can't go wrong. read more

Three words, one love: TOFU BAHN MI. I'm in love with this sandwich! If I don't have at least one a week I get cranky. For those who eat bacon, I used to be hooked on the Avocado BLT that they have often. The thing about this place is the menu changes frequently. Some things stick around longer, and sometimes there's just different variations of previous menu items (because of what's in season). The other thing I die for is the green goddess salad dressing, which I will literally lick the leftovers from the container. I've had consistently good experiences with the food and service at Atwater's. My boyfriend relies on their coffee supplies - it's the only place in Baltimore where you can get coffee that was roasted in the past 2-3 days, which is essential for high quality espresso. There are lots of great vendors here, and we've consistently enjoyed a variety of extremely reasonably priced produce and gourmet food options. My opinion of any business hinges largely on how they handle a mistake. I have an onion sensitivity. I don't eat them, period. So, I always check with my waiter or whoever is taking my order to ensure that they won't be in my food. One day, I ordered a salad, and specified no onions. They said, will carrots do as a substitute? I said sure, that sounded nice. When I got the salad it looked beautiful, but immediately upon opening it back at my office I found that what looked like carrots on the salad was actually a pickled carrot salad that was riddled with onions. I was not a happy camper, but this is a rarity at Atwater's so I picked everything off that I could and enjoyed my otherwise delightful salad. We ended up back at Atwater's later that night for a few grocery items I'd forgotten earlier. I spoke with a manager about my lunch experience, just so anyone with a sensitivity or allergy could avoid receiving onions on their food in the future (yes, of course, I was thinking that it would be nice if I could avoid it too.) He was horrified to know that my lunch hadn't been perfect, immediately insisted that he make me a new salad correctly for free, and told me not to even think of paying for the brownie I was holding. His immediate (and frankly, above and beyond) action regarding my complaint sent me a clear message that I can trust Atwater's with my business and I will always receive quality service from the team. Just had a very disappointing experience here. We live nearby and frequent Belvedere Square. While the food is always great, the service is very hit or miss. Our server today was very bad. I realize that we are not at a fine dining establishment and that counter service is a different situation but there are some basics that apply anywhere. Our server was unfriendly and evasive. After our food arrived, not only did she not bother to check on how we were doing, but it seemed she went out of her way not to look at us. Because of this, we were unable to ask for the soup that we ordered that never arrived. When my husband went to pay the bill he told her the soup was missing and she said "ok". No apology or attempt to rectify the situation. I would encourage the managers at Atwater's to consider some basic service training. A little smile and a simple check in after food is delivered can go a long way. read more

I eat here once a week. My whole family loves their soups. The kids love their rolls. The sandwiches are ok. The staff is amazing. Everyone is very nice and helpful. Coffee is good. Atwater's is the other place, besides the downtown Soup's On, to get soup in Baltimore. Go nowhere else. Atwater's is slightly more pricey, but on the whole the two establishments are equals but in different ways. Atwater's has sort of a yuppie feel to it, but in a way that is completely bearable (it's in a gourmet market that seems really cool but I've never actually bought anything there other than Atwater's). They have fewer soups daily, but their soups are full of inventive ingredients (for example, I once had a bean soup that featured brussels sprouts- unexpected but delicious!) that seem to be added while available or in season. The service is usually quite good, but it's easy to be forgotten for a while when they get really busy. I also wish that they offered a vegan soup on a daily basis. They always have a vegetarian, and that is 90% of the time vegan, but those off days kill me. They usually have a roasted veggie sandwich of some sort and they are addicting. You have been warned. I would have given this place 5 stars, even for its faults, based on the quality of the food, but then I discovered Soup's On. Either is a fine option for soup. read more

This place has good food but... It takes forever (20 minutes +) to get out to you and it's a bit pricy. 9.50-11 for a sandwich and three little sliced pickles (plus tip). The servers and very nice and attentive so I wouldn't blame them. Around the corner you can get a decent sandwich, chips, and a soft drink for a similar price and no need to tip! If I could eat at only one restaurant for the rest of my life, this would be out. I love, love, love Atwater's. I've lived in lots of cities but have never found any better balance of quality, value, and creativity. The Belvedere location has the most variety, but I like visiting all their stores for a change of scenery (Belvedere is very loud!) The staff are generally have very good customer service skills too. I've been a customer for many years, but my visits are few and far between due to the service, which in my experience is inattentive at best. On my most recent visit, it took the staff 10-15 minutes to notice me sitting at the counter. While it's true that every single employee I saw was bustling about grabbing other people's orders, I couldn't help noticing that the people who sat down next to me were given menus literally within 60 seconds of their arrival, and the same server promptly returned to take their orders after a few minutes. When I needed some time to decide, the server's promise to return in "a few minutes" turned into roughly a half hour. Fortunately I wasn't in a hurry, and neither were the servers, apparently. Service issues aside, the Counter Culture coffee always pleases and the pastries are generally tasty. As other customers have noted the menu is always rotating, so it's best not to get too attached to any particular soup, salad, or sandwich. I've had decent soups from them, but some items contain bizarre flavor combinations. The counter is a nice place to do some work or read over coffee or lunch, but the benign neglect I get from the staff keeps me from becoming a more frequent customer. Atwater's is an institution in Baltimore. They have several outposts, which shows you how popular they are. Having now eaten here almost a dozen times, at different locations, is that 'it's ok'. I went to the Belvedere Square location on Thursday night so i'll focus on that meal for this review. First, the service is a little slow and confusing. Some people from my party got beverages and others were just ignored. I ordered the veggie ruben, which was fine. What was offensive was the potato leek cheese soup. It was SO lumpy it looked like something you's patch holes on your wall with. However, that's not super important...it's all about flavor, which this soup had NONE. It tasted like the plaster I described before. I could not stomach it and ended up leaving it. Tip to servers: if someone leaves an entire dish on the table ask 'was this not up to your standards?' and tell the kitchen. That's data because someone has opted to leave a dish they are going to pay for on the table, which tells you something. My wife loves Atwater's so i'm sure i'll be dragged there at some point but i'm done. Fool me 12 times..... read more

Couldn't be better! I honestly like it better than some of the fancier farm to table restaurants in town. Everything is so tasty. And plenty of space at dinner time. Wish they stayed open a bit later, but I recognize it is not super busy in the evening. Was so bummed when Annapolis location closed, and the kenilworth location is do small--can't believe I never knew this location existed for past 8 years when it is just about as close to my work as kenilworth. Ned, (the owner), does a great job. He's transformed an underperforming marketplace into a neighborhood treasure. The only reason why I gave this 4 stars is that, to my taste, some of his experimental soups need to stay in the pot and not go on sale. More than once I've gotten take-away only to toss a pretty expensive bowl of weird tasting soup. That being said, they'll give you a bit to taste, but when busy, and it's always busy, who wants to hold up the line? I wish all restaurants were this well run. I've tried to be "cool," about my experience at ATWATERS Belvedere Square but I'm done. Went in recently to meet my family for dinner, sat at soup area. My sister introduced me to the server & said, "please get her anything she would like." She is a regular at Atwaters. The server looked at us & said, " this isn't your sister, she's FAT!" We were floored. I have extraordinary self confidence or else this could have wrecked someone. The next day I asked a friend/neighbor who owns a restaurant what I should do.....contact the management OR post a YELP review. He suggested contacting management & explaining her unprofessional behavior. I, did. Management was genuinely mortified & sent me a gift certificate. Very kind gesture. I gave it to my sister because as I mentioned, she is a regular there. Then......I heard that this employee sent my teenage niece a text WHINING about me....calling management. W.T.HECK? I, then drove to Atwaters & met a manager & explained situation. Again, they were mortified. Now.........i just heard my sister & niece went in recently to have dinner & THIS employee WHINED to them about me.......& said she can't understand what she did/said that was so wrong. Unimaginable, right? I am pissed. 3 strikes........ Sorry Atwaters, your food is good BUT......it's her OUTTA there or loyal, long term (cash paying) customers.
