So disappointed Atwater's Sunday menu has changed from "breakfast" to "brunch", which means no more buttermilk pancakes! When I inquired, our server told us that the kitchen could not keep up with the pancake orders and they changed to menu to better accommodate the transition from breakfast to lunch. This is SO DISAPPOINTING for a couple of reasons: 1. Atwater's has my favorite pancakes in Baltimore! While they are still served at other locations, I will miss them at Belvedere Square. Also-- the kitchen can't keep up? Shouldn't this equate to changing something about the kitchen and not revising the menu to remove an American breakfast staple? 2. The new brunch menu does not include anything comparable to pancakes. One of the reasons my partner and I frequented Atwater's was because of the fresh, reliable and simple food. I have dietary restrictions and pancakes are a great option for breakfast because they do not contain meat or nuts or fiber-rich ingredients. There is a listing for "French Toast Casserole" on the new menu but it is pre-stuffed with pecans and apples. When I asked our server if these could be removed the answer was no. There is no plain french toast on the menu. Bring back the pancakes Atwater's! We had to leave this past weekend because there is literally nothing else I can eat on the menu. What a bummer that a restaurant with such great food cannot be more accommodating to its customers, they lost our business. read more

It's Monday. Don't order the soup sandwich combination and expect to get them around the same time. Got my soup.....10 minutes later after, I had finish the soup then I got my sandwich. I was finished and declined the sandwich. When I asked the server all he could say was that's how we do it. Then I asked Asked to speak to a manager. She said with a very non-empathetic "I am sorry" What I don't understand is I had already sent back the sandwich. she proceeded to tell me that she wasn't going to charge me for the sandwich. Then she told me that they had not charged for the desert. I never ordered a desert! The odd thing is I only ate soup and just wanted soup and sandwich combo. All I would take is someone to explain to me if you order the soup and sandwich combination that you may not get your sandwich at the same time you get your soup. 10 min later then I could of made the decision. It would not have been a problem if they only explain what was going on. Bad communication and bad problem resolution form the manager side. This review is based on customer service - not the quality of the food. The food is outstanding - if you can get it. I've made numerous attempts over the years to stop by the carry out counter(s) to pick up a coffee and delicious pastry. Most of the time I walk away empty handed. Yesterday was my final attempt. Yesterday's experience is typical and I will elaborate. I stood in a line of 3 people at one of the two counters where you can order coffee and pastries to go. After 10 minutes of being ignored we all wandered to the other counter to see if it was better. Another 5 minutes gone. Several staff members saw us and would not make eye contact. The shop was not particularly busy. I'm so fed up that I will no longer permit my husband to purchase Atwater's bread or pastries at the Waverly Farmer's Market. I used to really enjoy this place but the last few times I've been here I've had negative experiences. The service is usually subpar to start, always takes a while for a waiter to come to us and to get our food. There was one instance where, when we finally did get our food, there was a piece of paper in my friend's soup. When it was brought to our waitress's attention, she said "Oh, that's weird" and walked away. No compensation, no offer for another bowl or anything. I was just at Atwater's this morning as well getting breakfast to go, with an unenthusiastic cashier where I literally had to ask her if she could take my order. I was sitting at a table waiting for them to call my name, as they did with my friend and her to go order. I waited over 20 minutes, until deciding to go up to the counter and ask if my food was ready. The cashier just grabbed my bag, which must have been sitting there for at least 10 minutes, and said nothing. Not only was it a waste of my time, but my food was cold and there was no apology. Please fix your extraction fan!! The last two times I've visited this month, I left smelling like smoke and sandwiches. Today my mom and I visited and she had just come from the hairdresser in preparation for an event this evening. The smell left on our skin, hair and clothing is so strong my husband immediately said something from across the room when I walked in the door today. When I looked up towards the ceiling i could see your ceiling fan was on, but I could also see the air was thick with smoke where the sun came streaming in. This place is always solid for soup and sandwiches. Like a few other venues in Belvedere they have table service for eating in and also items from dairy and bakery cases for take home. Eat in service is always good--and not easy in this open market where servers have to patrol tables that are mixed with patrons for all the market establishments. Soooooooo, why is the counter staff service so awful when all they essentially are doing is ringing up take out items??? I have eaten at Atwaters for many years and I have now gotten disgusted with the quality of their food. Tonight I ordered the "Chicken Pot Pie." I asked the waitress clearly if it was a meal and she said - without missing a beat -, "that not only was it a meal, but sometimes I can't finish it." What did I get for $10.95 plus tax and tip? I got not a pie but a CHICKEN POT MUFFIN. I kid you not, the nasty thing was the diameter of a corn muffin and HALF the height. The side salad was literally nothing but lettuce and some godforsaken tasteless goop called salad dressing. I was outraged. The CHICKEN POT MUFFIN had a single piece of chicken. I'll repeat what I just said: a single piece of chicken. I kick my self in the butt for not returning this ridiculous piece of nonsense. Then the waitress had the audacity to ask what I thought of the meal and I politely and calmly said: "It's an appetizer, not a meal - and I'm unhappy." She said in a huff, "well other people like it!" The last straw was when my friend - who practically eats there everyday said, "the pot pies have gotten a lot smaller!" And shortly thereafter "I'm still hungry." Not everyone is rolling in money just because they eat at Atwaters. I rarely eat out because I'm on a very tight budget. When I ask a question I expect the staff to know the difference between an appetizer and a meal - or not to lie to me. If Atwaters is having financial problems because of greedy landlords raising the rent through the roof THEN MOVE. Don't skimp on the food or hire poorly trained staff. My fiancé and I come here at least twice a week and are rarely disappointed. All of the ingredients are fresh and are of great quality. There are four soups served daily, each day with a unique combination of vegetables and flavors you've never imagined would be possible. They'll even let you sample each soup before ordering. Both the chicken salad and turkey Brie (with cranberry relish) sandwiches are by far my favorite lunch choices, and you can order in half if you're in the mood for a soup/sandwich combo. They have a vast dessert selection, a variety of cheese, and freshly baked breads for sale, along with a full espresso bar. read more

This review is for breakfast. I cannot comment on the coffee, soups, or sandwiches but I can tell you that the breakfast has potential. In fact, this place has so much potential it's a little frustrating they don't live up to it. The service and quality of food are good but it's strange that they don't serve pancakes on Sunday or that they don't serve french toast despite having eggs and a good selection of bread. If these things were addressed and the quality of the food was a little better (like Mintwood Place in Adams Morgan) then this would be our go to place for breakfast. At first glance, Atwater's @ Belvedere Square Market seems nice, but not unlike any other marketplace eatery. The food, though, is a different story. My first time here, and I delve into an Atwater's Chicken Salad sandwich (a half portion was plenty to extinguish my considerable pangs) consisting of free range chicken, sweet Granny Smith apples, cranberry, and golden raisins all enveloped in a savory basil mayonnaise on a lightly toasted sunflower flax bread. At just under $5, it is an affordable way to treat your palate and your budget. I advise splurging the extra $3.50 and adding a Summer Ale from Tall Tales Brewery (local to Maryland), and washing it all down in style. Though far from unknown, as a local, I had no idea this place existed. If a sandwich here can taste this good, I can't wait to come back and try something else. Parking is a hassle, but most spots are free and there is a lot to explore here. Before or after a movie at the Senator, or simply a quick nosh, this place will surprise you. Great food, but confusing! My husband and I stopped in to the Belvedere Square Market to explore the offerings and sit down for morning coffee and tea before running errands. We settled on drinks from the counter at Atwater's, and then were asked by a waiter if we wanted to sit down. We ended up being seated on the heated patio (which was lovely!) with menus and full table service. Our drinks were fantastic, but the whole experience just seemed odd - we DID want to sit down, but not for table service. It's confusing to have the same waitstaff and seating areas for both pay-and-go customers and sit-down-restaurant customers. read more

It is depressing how much Atwater's at Belvedere Square is the best food Baltimore has to offer. Which is not to say it's bad, it's just that my wife and I have tried many places around town, and received a check at the end of the meal and sighed "we could have had better food and paid half of this at Atwater's. " Their food is always fresh, delicious, but unpretentious and simple. Recently, there have appeared a few caveats: some items on the menu, including some of the new dinner entrees are not on point at all, and a couple of the servers have an approach that goes beyond lackadaisical and kind of into absurd territory. The rest are excellent, so I don't really want to paint too miserable of a picture here, but we have had a couple experiences of waiting inordinately long to be greeted after seating, multiple walk-bys without acknowledgement or eye contact, being given some other customer's check at the end of the meal, basically every step that requires the server's attentoin being an ordeal, all sorts of foolishness. I guess I'm not the only one that appreciates their food, and hopes they can maintain what used to be a consistently excellent experience. read more

Eh I live right across the street and I want the food to be good but it just isn't. We've been here for breakfast 3 times and it's always a disappointment. The pancakes are way too eggy, the tortillas for the huevos rancheros are gross, the salsa verde is lacking in flavor, the pies and cakes are just flavorless and not very good. However my boyfriend raves about their chocolate pudding ice cream! And I love their bacon its thick yet chewy and slightly crispy. I recommend the Belvedere square market and its retail shops more than I do Atwater's read more

Sorry Atwater's but someone needs to pay attention. I have been a patron since Atwater's opened in Belevede Square & have enjoyed many of their menu items. My husband and I visited this week for a light summer dinner. I ordered the Mediterranean Salad. A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT. For a $9.50 entree salad I expected better from the kitchen What arrived was plateful of romaine lettuce in very large pieces and a bland dressing with butter beans on the side. I eat here at least twice a week. The fact that the menu changes regularly is a good thing and a bad thing -- it's fun to try new things, but on the other hand sometimes something is so good it makes me sad that I can't have it again. I have never had a bad meal here, and like I said, I'm here quite often. They even do fruitcake right over the holidays. Seriously. I hated fruitcake for 43 years and then I tried it here. I almost refuse to believe it's really fruitcake, it's so good. The staff are friendly, helpful and all-around wonderful people. My only beef is that occasionally the food delivery isn't timed terribly well. Sometimes one person will get their soup and ten minutes later, the other person gets their sandwich. First: I frequent Atwater's almost weekly. I like it. The food is good and there's a great urban vibe. But...and you knew a "but" was coming...the servers are the most accomplished in Baltimore City at avoiding making eye contact. I guess it's the fear that you'll ask them for something, or ask them a question, or ask them to go a little beyond the norm. Just this morning I was there and sat at one of the counters. And I sat. And I sat. Servers scurried around and past before someone actually looked at me and asked if I wanted something. Um, I'm sitting at a counter in a restaurant space, so, yes, I want something to eat. I have grown up in the Belvedere Square area and was excited that a new restaurant, one featuring farm to table ingredients and organic foods, was established. I was primed to like the place, simply because I saw the redevelopment of the market, especially of Atwater's, as a key part of our neighborhood's recovery. The food is great but the service is wildly inconsistent, today I received particularly bad service and felt compelled to write this review. To start my parents and I sat for over 20 minutes before being approached by anybody. The waitress was short with us and curtly took our orders. I ordered the grafton pulled bbq and slaw sandwich for $8. The sandwich is supposed to be served with pulled pork bbq but was instead served with sliced ham. I asked the waitress about this and she curtly explained that they were out of the pulled pork. Yet they still charged me full price for the sandwich. Overall, the service is curt and unprofessional, and in my opinion there are way better places in Belvedere Square. read more
