ATX Cocina is a modern take on some classic Mexican flavors. I went there on a Tuesday night, and they were still super busy. Even with a reservation we still had to wait a little bit for our table. They have a large bar at the front where you can sit at to wait for your table, and it was packed as well. The restaurant gives off a warm and engaging atmosphere suitable for a place to meet with friends and socialize over dinner. Their menu has so many appealing options, so we had to ask our server for his suggestions. We decided to go for a more tapas style meal so that we could try more dishes rather than go for their larger dishes. My absolute favorite dish was the Pulpo y Chorizo which consisted of the most tender octopus on top of chorizo and a crispy tortilla. Next favorite were the Sopes. Although it looks like it can be a one or two biter, I'd suggest cutting it up before going in for a bite since each piece is packed with toppings. I'd pass on the Crab Tostadas and the Papas the next time around. The Crab Tostadas had a surprising amount of crab on each piece but otherwise didn't have much flavor to it and just tasted like crab on a chip. The Papas were a bit too sweet for my taste. Based on what I had ordered, it was very hit or miss, but what was good was really good. I'll most definitely come back to try new things and curate a go to menu when visiting. I'd also like to try out some drinks next time as well. read more

It is on the pricier side for a regular night out, but absolutely worth it when you want to treat yourself to a nice evening. The atmosphere is stunning and thoughtfully decorated with an upscale feel. The food is rich, savory, and full of flavor. We ordered a few appetizers to share and the guacamole and chips were a total hit. The entrees were also delicious. Loved everything about our experience. The waiters and staff were friendly and kind. We chatted it up with our waiter who was explaining how she loved working there and enjoys meeting so many new people in Austin. This place never disappoints. It was packed on Friday yet we were able to sit at the bar. We had the pleasure of Erica and Fernando attending to us. Outstanding service from both. The food was great as usual. We started with the Tamal with acorn squash masa. Different yet very tasty. Next were the Brussels and they were just as tasty as the first time I tried them months ago. The Filete de Lomo was brought to us medium rare and was fantastic. Flavorful and oh so tender. Lastly, the esquite. The mix of sweet corn with the chipotle aioli, tajin and queso fresco made for a palate appeasing dish. Dessert was the tres leches cake. While it was tasty, the sauce it was basking in was a tad tart and i felt it robbed the cake of its flavor. Despite this, our visit was wonderful. Has the pleasure of Sarah and Hayley check in on us while we dined. That added touch always impresses me. We appreciated it. ATX Cocina is one of my favorite restaurants and highly recommend it. Dare I say my new favorite restaurant in Austin? This place was phenomenal. We easily got a seat at the bar with no reservation on a Sunday evening and came hungry. Starting with the duck confit rice - this was delicious and my favorite dish, it was vibrant and shockingly good with the perfect amount of spice. Their version of a quesadilla is filled with juicy steak and gooey cheese also very tasty. The Tamal was good as well but compared to the other two dishes not our favorite though all three dishes were a plentiful size and decent price. This is a must stop in Austin! read more

A good choice for modern Mexican with some amazing menu items. The food was mostly a hit, the one drink I had was a miss. Ambiance was on point - the space is gorgeous with curved ceilings, a cute patio, and modern aesthetic. Service was mostly great with a few misses. Price is on the higher end. A solid 3.5 stars. They specialize in masa or offerings with corn tortillas so we had to try that! We spent a couple minutes looking over the menu and decided on the machete (chicken tinga) but they were out. I don't love when restaurants run out of things and don't tell you beforehand! We settled for a vegetarian option, the tamale. It was really good but the waiter had told us the machete is his favorite, so I'll have to come back for that! We ordered the carne asada as our main entree and this was FANTASTIC. It was pecan crusted in a sublime sauce. Disclaimer that I haven't tried other entrees here but if you're debating, don't think twice about the carne asada! It was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. We got the brussel sprouts on the side and I love how generous the portion are! However, it didn't feel very different or "Mexican" to me. I also told the waiter that I don't eat pork when he was recommending suggestions, but came to realize this had chorizo verde in it. We got the Sower Sandia cocktail which is essentially a watermelon margarita with chamoy. This was pretty watered down and we were hoping for more flavor. The rim had chamoy but they skipped on the salt. Perhaps other drinks are better here. My girlfriend and I were celebrating our friendversary and the waiter comes out at the end with two glasses of bubbly. This was really sweet touch! Overall a good choice for a large group, girls night, or date night. read more

The cocktails and drinks are flowing and a nice compliment to the food. My recommendation is to take the Tapas approach. Order a sampling of different dishes and share. First timer at this restaurant and Without a doubt, one of my favorite places in Austin. Not pictured but equally amazing as what you do see in photos was the Hamachi & queso fundido with brisket. The pictures are of the whole fish, which was a striped Seabass, blue lump crab relleno and the most amazing short rib. The entire restaurant is gluten-free, which is amazing. Staff is on point with descriptions and advice. This place was a surprise. We (my husband and myself) walked in around 545. They had no table seating available until 830. We ended up sitting at the small bar in the back. Out bartender was very helpful and friendly, as were the wait staff that picked up drinks and bussed our dishes. The idea of "modern" Mexican food was scary at first. The menu was intimidating at first, but the bartender walked us through it and the food was AMAZING! It is on the pricier side, but is worth every penny. We ended up splitting a bunch of items so we could try more things. We started with the Queso Fundido. The queso had green chilies and was a little spicy. The corn tortillas served with it were very flavorful and reminded me of homemade tortillas. Then we tried the "Esquites" (elote) and ate every bit of it. Then we moved to the masa part of the menu and devoured the "enfrijolada" (enchilada) and the "machete". We finished with the "Iberian pork chop". This was not really a chop but more like a roast. It was cooked with a little crispy outside and very tender on the inside. Overall, this place is great for modern Mexican food. We would definitely go back if we make it to Austin again. Overrated! First off, front desk hosts are rude. If you don't have a reservation they don't treat u well. You can ask them several times if a table comes up while u patiently sip a drink at the bar but even with half the restaurant empty, they won't give you a table once u are at the bar. The food was average! Nothing to cry home about! The drinks were average too! My biggest pet peeve is the fact that we asked for a HOT SAUCE, server didn't say there was a charge for hot sauce. They brought us a small serving of hot sauce and we finished it with appy so asked for more. He brings just a side of small hot sauce again, next thing I know they charged us $5 each for the hot sauce. So we ended up paying $10 for hot sauce that we didn't realize was a thing. Now that just left a bitter taste .. yes it's only 10 but hey atleast tell us. We had no idea we were being charged for hot sauce. I really enjoyed trying out ATX Cocina! The interior of the restaurant is really nice and has a lot of room, would recommend a reservation though as it gets pretty crowded even on weeknights. The dishes are fun and inventive, I tried some things I had never had before. The ahi tuna tostadas were great but a bit spicy! Really loved the sopes, these may have been the best thing we tried. The crab Chile relleno was great too. We also enjoyed our drinks - tried the spicy margarita and the Frida khalo. A bit pricey overall but to be expected at a trendy restaurant downtown. read more

The menu was kind of confusing at first but we had a wonderful server who explained it thoroughly and we ended up ordering a chicken tinga mesa which was like a cheesy quesadilla & it was so fresh absolutely wonderful. We also had the Cesar salad which was HUGE. It was one of the best salads I've had in a long time. The margaritas were also spot on! How have I not reviewed ATX Cocina yet? This is one of my favorite spots and I am often recommending it to others when they are looking for a solid meal downtown. You definitely should arrive hungry as the menu has so many great options and the portions are solid. The cocktails are great - particularly the Margarita De La Casa with tajin (of course!). Like I said, the food is great - and they start strong with the chips and salsa (the verde is my personal favorite - tangy!). Some of my favorites include: Machete - conceptually close to a chicken quesadilla, but so much better! Masa enveloping chicken tinga and queso, topped with crema. Mixed lettuce - quite possibly the best Caesar salad I've ever had. Always crisp, fresh and flavorful. Esquites - I love a good corn dish and this one does not disappoint. Camote - such a lovely blend of flavors with the sweet potato. The atmosphere is great - upscale and open, yet intimate. The service is always top notch. It's clear the staff love their product and want you to have a great experience. Be sure to make reservations as they do get busy - but they have a wide variety of seating options (bar, tables, high tops, indoor / outdoor) to choose from! read more

If you live in Central Texas, you probably eat A LOT of Mexican food - Mexican restaurants are literally everywhere! So it's only natural that sometimes you might find yourself saying "Mexican? Meh...Not again!" Well, hold that thought! ATX Cocina is not just another Mexican restaurant. It's a cut above the rest. First, it's in a great location in downtown Austin, right by the river on Cesar Chavez Street, so the views are great. Second...Parking isn't hard. There's public pay-lots within a block, or you can take advantage of reasonably priced valet parking. Third...The ambience is excellent. It's a bustling bistro with an attractive decor, combining modern sensibilities with old world Mexican styling. There's a large central bar, lots of floor-to-ceiling windows, and great artisanal cocktails. There's also an attractive patio, but be warned: If you're not from the southwest, Central Texas is HOT, so evenings are better if you want to sit outside (or if there's no indoor seating available). Fourth...And most importantly...THE FOOD! Put simply, it's outstanding. And the amazing part? ATX Cocina is 100% gluten-free and seed-oil free! That's important to me because my wife is gluten-free, and we're sometimes limited in our choices. But not here! In addition, the portions are sizable enough to be shared. We shared the Hamachi (similar to Ceviche), the Sopes, the crispy Brussels, and the Iberica Pork Chop (perfect to share because it comes with 2 chops). For desert, we had the Tres Leches. All delicious! And because you're sharing, the bill won't have sticker-shock. We liked ATX Cocina so much, we went back the very next day for brunch. My partner and I visited ATX Cocina on our trip to Austin for a weekend getaway. We are use to great food in Los Angeles and had no expectations before visiting-- we also had no idea what to expect. First off-- our server Taylor set the bar SO high for other servers. She was a complete delight. She has worked at the restaurant for 5-6 years, was patient with us, listened so well, and educated us completely about both food and drinks. We found our favorite margs, and the best sides/apps, and completed our evening without even tapping into the entrees. The portions of the sides were unreal (highly recommend the creamy corn and Brussels). Chips and salsa were killer (not on the menu), and we also ordered the Sopes (hard to describe but unbelievably flavorful pork/bean stuffed taco shells), and the Machete (chicken stuffed quesadilla). An amazing spot to celebrate a birthday or to treat yourself for a much-needed elevated dining experience! ATX Cocina is one of the most upscale Mexican restaurants in Austin. Browsing the cocktail menu, there were plenty of delicious drinks. Craving a piña colada, I ordered the Coco Loco which entailed Don Julio Blanco, coconut cream, pineapple, orange, and nutmeg. This creamy delight satisfied my piña colada craving (next best thing) as it did not disappoint! For appetizers, the tostadas de atun was a small bite to provide a fresh and citrusy crunch to prepare you for the entree. For $21, only five small miniature taco-like tostadas seemed overpriced but this can be expected with fine dining. For appetizers, I would stick with chips and guacamole and the cheesy queso fundido. The chips were balanced with the right amount of salt and the guacamole tasted like it was made fresh minutes ago. The queso fundido was my favorite, I loved using my spoon to grab the queso and watching the queso string its cheese inches into the air. The queso fundido was hot, sticky, and delicious. For the main dish, my boyfriend and I shared the carne asada which consisted of juicy skirt steak with a side of broccolini. I was not very fond of the broccolini, but the steak was cooked at medium rare and was so tender that my knife easily sliced through the steak without force. For full transparency, it took a long time to choose an entre that would satisfy us. The menu is difficult to navigate because it is mostly all in Spanish and the dishes are more experimental. I expected the menu to have all of the common Mexican foods like enchiladas in an upscale way, but a diversity of tacos, enchiladas, and quesadillas was missing (to name a few). With the plenty of items that my boyfriend and I ordered, we were full and happy. My first experience at ATX Cocina was for my birthday, I chose it because the rich ambiance of the restaurant makes me feel like I am in Miami. It is elevated, beautiful, and feels exclusive. A big bonus is that they have tables large enough to fit big parties. My party consisted of 8 people, and they were able to get us in last minute. I recommend ATX for the environment and quality of food. read more

A GREAT upscale Mexican restaurant! The decorations and vibes were great. We ended up sitting outdoors in the back and I loved all the lights at night. Jared was our server and he was great! Really personable, great suggestions, and very clearly knowledgeable of the menu and location. Since we're only here for snacks, we didn't order everything we wanted. I got the Coco Loco for a drink and it was fantastic. For food, we got the queso fundido, esquites, machete tacos, and taquitos de atun. Hands down, the tuna was the BEST. The chef here put together an amazing menu of authentic flavors from southern Mexico. I would describe this as a fusion of flavor straight out of a dream scape. Try all the small plates the flavors hit different than the larger dishes. My only issue was that the short rib in a Quase mole sauce was extremely dry probably because it had been sitting out too long as we ordered later in the night closer to closing time, but that being said, you will not be disappointed with your experience here. The last adventure in Austin was to ATX Cocina. ATX is a modern Mexican fare including seafood & mezcal & tequila cocktails anchor this upscale eatery. We started with Tamal. This was served with acorn squash masa, seared calabacita, cilantro yogurt, farm greens and salsa macha. The masa had a sweetness and was exceptionally light, while the vegetables were tender with a crunch. The crema was flavorful, bright, and fresh and added a needed cooling note. The heat level of the dish was right up to the edge of being too spicy but did not go over. Next, we tried Sopes. This dish had cochinita pibil, smoked beans, xni-pec, and salsa verde. The meat was dry and overcooked but offered good flavor. The smoked bean flavor comes through and builds the saltiness. The jalapeno and pickled onion provided a much-needed vinegar punch. The fried masa had a great crunch. The salsa verde gave the bite a citrus punch. We decided to try the Queso Fundido. This dish had brisket, queso mixto, rajas, and pickled chili. The blue corn tortillas were fresh and full of great flavor. The brisket was juicy, tender, and full of flavor. The cheese melted wonderfully, giving good stretch and chew to the dish, while the pickled chilies and onions offered texture and a crunch. The sauce, possibly tomatillo, with the juice from the brisket adds the needed moisture and another level of flavor to the bite. My one knock is that the dish was very salty. My wife and I split the Crab Relleno as our entrée. It was made with smoked honey cornbread stuffed Anaheim, jumbo lump blue crab, charred tomatillo sugo, and tamarind. My wife said it best. "Everything is light and delicate yet intense at the same time." The butter-poached crab had just enough flavor to stand out with a light sweetness. The honey cornbread gave the dish texture and a punch in the mouth of sweetness. The pepper was tender but had a crunch, good chew and taste. The charred tomatillo was smokey, acidic, and slightly bitter to offset the sweetness. The tamarind was tangy and tart. ATX Cocina serves beer and wine and has a full bar. The wait staff was pleasant and knowledgeable about their menu. ATX offers indoor and outdoor seating. The Fat Man says that ATX Cocina is Fat Man Approved with 2 chins. read more
