Fresh, flavorful Tex Mex! I was invited to this restaurant for a business dinner and was pleasantly surprised at how delicious the food was. For appetizers we had the pork sopas. I heard the pork was marinated for 12 hours and it shows. For the entree the beef was my favorite. It was tender and well cooked you could eat it with a spoon. Last, but certainly not least, the guacamole is a must. Our group loved the little chuncha of avocado and the thin slices of jalapeños. The service we received was equally excellent. I have a food allergy and they took great care of me. Our waitress Reagan was the best I've had in a long time. She was so attentive and proactive. If the food wasn't so good I would not have given this place even two stars. Let me start with the food - delicious! Interesting, unique and flavorful. That said I didnt go out to dinner alone. I went with friends to enjoy a nice relaxing evening out and share time, discussion, opinions with people I enjoy. There were only four of us and we could not hear a word said from across the table. The acoustics in this room were clearly intentionally poor making conversation virtually impossible.The waiter took great pains and effort in describing some highlights of the menu but we heard nothing. He also was soooo pretentious and overbearing in his unnecessarily long and detailed explanation that we were actually happy we couldn't hear it anyway. My friends and I have now eaten at this restaurant four times and all 4 nights, it was exceptional. The cocktails are delicious, the margaritas taste like the authentic ones I have when in Mexico. The food is delicious and just keeps us coming back. Taylor, has been our server the last two or three times we visited and she couldn't be more attentive and friendly. My partner and I were very excited to try this restaurant but it was such a huge disappointment. The food was very good but the service was shameful. The waiter rushed us through ordering and eating our meal. We finished drinks and what should have been a three course meal in about an hour. Our reservation was at 8:15 on a Sunday night. We ordered a couple of small plates along with drinks. Then he pressured us into choosing an entree at the same time as ordering our small plates because "the meats would take an hour to prepare." We hadn't even eaten half of our second small plate when our main course and side were dumped alongside the plate we were sharing. It felt like he was trying to cram food down our throats and get us out. Of course we weren't finishing eating our dinner when he came to clear the plates. At that point my stomach just hurt. After we agreed we were finished, he picked up our partially eaten dinner plate and started to walk away with it....NOT even asking us if we wanted to take anything home. I had to ask him to box it up. It was very obvious that he was trying to get us out of there as quickly as possible. The absolute worst service. I have had much better service in diners. read more

We came here for happy hour a few weeks ago and were blown away by the atmosphere, quality of drinks and delicious food. The service at that time was sub-par, but we figured it was because it was around the dinner service had opened. We made reservations to return for my husbands 41st birthday tonight. The service was terrible and so was the food. I couldn't even finish my meal. The ceaser salad has so much lemon on it that I will probably have heart burn for days. I thought this place was great. We came here before a show at Moody on (accidentally) National Margarita Day 2018. Sat down right away at the bar. We had the house margaritas. Drinks were great. I wanted to love this place because who doesn't love upscale Mexican, but I was underwhelmed. The margaritas were average, the guacamole was average, my fish was over cooked, and the service was poor. (Needless to say it was not the upscale experience I had hoped for). The highlight for me was the trio of salsas and that was it. The interior is beautiful, so I would only suggest to go for a beer and a salsa snack. Ambiance was open contemporary, but at the same time, it felt comfortable and more like a smaller venue. Talking to each other at our table was easy. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The server was very knowledgeable about the food, the ingredients and how it was prepared - all gluten free - not important to us but perhaps to others. Very good Mexican restaurant. Excellent Margaritas. The vibe and decor are very cool. My biggest complaint would be the heat level on some of the dishes. I like spicy food, but one dish in particular was way too hot and it should not have been (according to the waitress). It was a crab kind of dip that was served cold.. Very flavorful, but far too spicy. Also did not care for the Tortilla chips. They are homemade, but I would prefer more traditional chips. The guacamole was only average. The beef short rib entree was very good! I would definitely go back and try some different dishes. read more

This used to be one of my "go-to" places. I made reservations a couple of weeks ago for a friend of mine I haven't seen in 3 years and is about to move out of Austin, so we were looking forward to having some time to talk and catch up. Our reservation was at 4:30 on a Friday. When I checked in, the hostess said, "You have your table until 6:30". I didn't say anything back, but thought that was odd to give us an end time, as when I made the reservation, it did not give me and end time and I knew me and my friend would want to talk longer than 2 hours. So we sat, ordered drinks and food, talked. Our check was a little over $100 each with a 20% tip. We had just ordered our third Margarita and were enjoying our conversation when I guess a "manger" came and told us our time was up and we needed to vacate our table. My friend said we each had a full margarita and asked how long did we have. The "manager" actually said we had "about 120 seconds". I then said it was really odd he was telling us we had to leave when we were still drinking and paying customers. He then tried to say I entered a "verbal agreement" with the hostess upon her telling me we only had the table until 630pm upon check-in. I corrected him and told him I had not actually verbally agreed to that timeframe, but he huffed off. My friend and I downed our drinks and decided to go elsewhere. On my way out, I tried to tell our waitress whom I just tipped 20% that I didn't understand their policy of kicking out one paying customer in favor of another, and she could care less about my complaint. Not sure what happened to this place, the Vallet guy was about the only nice/competent worker. Would not recommend if you are looking for a place to catch up with friends. If you are okay with scarfing down food and drinks, then sure, go here. read more

Horrible customer service. I made a reservation via Open Table for 5 at 6:45pm. I needed to increase to 9 so I called and they said that was fine. I got a notification from Open Table confirming my reservation for 9 at 9 pm not 6:45pm. When I called to find out what had happened they just said somehow the time had been changed, and there was nothing they could do, but they hoped I would think of them in the future. Arrived for dinner shortly before 6. Wonderful intro. Drinks delivered and full order placed by 6:20. Restaurant fairly empty at this point. First course--best queso I've had in ages. Second course--snapper crudo that was also wonderful. And then the tables start filling up and an entire hour goes by where we wait and wait with an empty water pitcher and no food (and see that everyone else is waiting and waiting) until finally our entrees are served. And guess what--they were cold. Floor manager more preoccupied with schmoozing and arranging the curtains than working the floor and checking in on customers. Clearly short staffed on the floor as well (but please do have three people working the host stand). I felt bad for our waitress as she also got stuck with two 8+ parties on either side of us. And by the time we left (2.5 hours after we got there), those people still didn't have a bite of food on their tables. What gives? It's just another nice new restaurant in Austin where clearly you're meant to feel good or lucky to be there vs. actually having an overall great experience where service matters as much as the cuisine. Staff your restaurant correctly or at least pay attention and go above and beyond in some way. Ugh. read more

If I'm going to splurge for some great interior Mexican, ATX Cocina is my go to. Went there last night and am continually amazed at their menu, and their happy hour cocktails are incredible. I highly recommend the duck tacos and the brussel sprouts, and to drink I always get an Eva Longoria - incredible! :) read more

Short version: order the tamal for appetizer and the barbacoa short rib or pork chicharrón for dinner with a side of esquites. Long version: Visited restaurant for New Year's Eve dinner. We were unable to reserve a table the day before as they were all booked, but sitting near the bar was not an issue. Food is excellent ! Top of town. Had two margaritas, one the ATX special which was supposed to be more citrus, and a regular house version. Couldn't tell the difference, both were great. For appetizers had the melted queso, tamal and flautas that were part of the 4:30pm happy hour. All of them top notch, but the tamal is a must. The queso is a top quality blend (not the yellow-runny stuff) served with corn tortillas. It can get messy w the queso from all the other awesome liquid stuff on it so ... watch out for your clothing. For main dish had barbacoa beef short rib, carne asada and pork chicharrón. All for sharing. Top is short rib closely followed by pork chicharrón. Asada was very nice but the others were too good. Side order of "esquites", basically roasted corn in an awesome sauce (you want this). Dessert was some chocolate cake thing ... not amazing but ok. Do yourself a favor ... use he valet parking right next to the restaurant. You won't freeze walking back to the city hall parking ! Been around here for more than 10 years, this is now one of my favorite places in town. read more

I had such a great experience here!! This place has a great atmosphere with awesome staff. We ordered the guacamole to start and it was the best I've had. I was so impressed with their serving size. Almost all places I've been to when ordering guacamole, give such small portions and typically have filler lettuce but this guacamole filled the entire plate! The prices are a little high but that should be expected because it is a little more upscale. We came at happy hour and there were good deals of appetizers and tacos at this time! The only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars is it doesn't have typical Mexican food. You won't find your enchiladas or typical favorites. The queso we ordered was not the kind you dip with chips but rather the thicker kind served with tortillas. That's just not my preference. I will definitely be going back for a night with friends during happy hour or a special occasion/date night and would recommend for a great experience! read more

I've been twice. Fist experience was wonderful. Great service and food. Cochinita pibil had good flavor and salsa sampler was awesome. Second visit was not similar. They said they're were no tables so sat at bar. (Tables were open entire time til we left) Still had good service at the bar at least. The tinga did not taste like tinga. Cochinita pibil flavor was off and very greasy. Salsa sampler was not the same and lacking. was hoping for another central Mexican restaurant in Austin. Not sure if chefs changed but this was difference of a few months. read more
