The rooms are a bit dated, but our room was very spacious and the bathroom had double sinks and a separate makeup/hairstyling area. Our big problem was the Air Conditioning. It has just been unseasonably hot, but the AC wasn't going below 24.5 (about 76 degrees). When I called down, the first person said to give it time and she would send a fan up. When I called down a few hours later, the person said she and her colleague would change the settings on their end and set the thermostat to 20 (68 degrees). That evening, it's still around 24 degrees, so we opened the windows and put the fan in one of the windows. It helped cool the room down, but also let in tons of noise and light; bad for sleeping. The next day, when none of this was resolved, I asked to speak to a manager and explained to her the situation. She assured me that she would have a technician look at it and monitor to ensure that it is working properly. By the time we returned later, our room was around 22 (71.6; not what I wanted, but much more tolerable). Again, I find it annoying that none of the other people actually worked to help me, but I am glad that someone did so I can get some sleep. It's definitely not a luxury hotel, as far as service goes, but it served our purposes well in Brussels. If you stay here and need something, I suggest going to the manager. And, to the manager(s), I suggest retraining your employees to be honest with customers about what they can and will do.

This rating may partially reflect the misaligned of the hotel experience to my higher expectations of a Design Hotel by Marriott. The staff was friendly. When we arrived a bit early, they offered to watch our stuff while we grabbed lunch. They mentioned a room should be available early as they were not too booked. We returned in about 2 hours just to check if a room might be ready but were prepared to continue to explore if not. They said the room was cleaned and just pending inspection. Foolishly we waited, it ended up being over an hour and we were now checking in after standard check in time. Frustrating but it happens. The room was spacious but had a few minor issues a hotel of this level should not. They bathroom door would not close all the way, and while spacious, the room is still cozy and without a fully shut door, one could hear, well, everything happening in the bathroom. Further, the sink would not drain unless the plug thing in the middle was fully removed from the sink. These issues were reported but we weren't expecting they be resolved before check out (and they weren't). I was on vacation but needed to check in on a few work items. My biggest annoyance was that their wifi was spotty and best and kept dropping in and out. I ended up having to take my laptop out of the hotel to send a few important emails. Disappointing. Location wise, it's great. Easy walk to everything. Tenish minutes to the train station. In the heart of downtown without being subject to all the downtown craziness. As the goal was to minimize time in room, the location made it easy.

With our trip coming to an end, we had mixed emotions - it was something we looked forward to for months while planning it, but damn... we were to tired. We walked over 100 miles during our time in various cities, so we were both very excited to get back to a normal life... and Hotel Metropole was our last stop before making that journey. The main lobby area looked much more like a super old school bank, than a hotel. Outside the hotel, there was a ton of construction going on, as they were completely re-doing a very wide road (think small highway-sized.) The person who checked us in provided us with ear buds in case the construction noise disturbed us, but we didn't hear anything from our rooms. Plus, we loved the very centralized location of this hotel - everything was within one mile, which allowed us to walk to everything we had on our itinerary. Our bellhop quickly became my all-time favorite person in his chosen profession. He had our bags and basically went into an all-out sprint to make sure to catch the elevator, but somehow he did this super gracefully. I was wildly impressed. He couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating, as we had a few questions about the area and the room. The room had very high ceilings and a huge bathroom. It wasn't super updated or out-of-date - kind of caught in the middle. The AC was not turned on for our stay on May 9th, which meant that we had to open the window. Not ideal, but this was the norm throughout Europe at this time of year. Breakfast was offered for 9.50 Euros (Express) or 21 Euros (Full) but we didn't have time. We were only here for one night and had a flight to catch in the morning. My biggest complaint was the situation with the shower. When you turned the water on, it came out of both the shower head and the water faucet and there was no way to turn off one or the other. They were either both on or both off. That would have been fine, but the temperature in the water was wildly different. My shower water was warm, but the bath water was scalding. I would have loved the shower water to be hotter, but my feet couldn't handle the bath water to be turned up any more. It had to have been about a 20 degree difference. Other than that, our stay here was great!

Though, I didn't try using their coffee maker because I don't know when's the last time it was cleaned out. There's a pretty big safe in the closet. The bathroom has a tub and a shower. Though, the shower itself is a little tight, but manageable. Bed was comfy, but it did get hot during the night and we set the temp all the way down, but that didn't cool the room down enough. Bathroom is big enough and not cramped at all. A couple of caveats is that this place is about 30 minutes away from the city center. You can either walk to the bus stop, take the shuttle back to the airport and take the subway or use Uber. Of course the Grand Place offers more than what I've listed as it's the heart of Brussels and the bee hive of visitors and activity was constant all day. The Grand Place most popular photo backdrop was the Hotel De Ville, town hall, as it dominated the square. In summer one had to wait until late (after 10pm) before the sunlight faded from the sky and the lights in the Grand Place started to turn on (versus 6pm during my first winter visit in February). As one spins around 360 from the town hall, the different styles of the surrounding guild houses added a lot of character with their elaborate, unique facades and statues and even the darker King's House. It was nice to just stand around and not be bothered by any random person coming up to beg or sell something. From here it was an easy stroll to the Manneken Pis statue, the TinTin shop and mural, Royal Gallery of St Hubert and more.
