Augurs Well is a craft beer bar that opened in Manhattan, New York in 2011. It was founded by Queens-native Greg Nardello Jr. and his father Greg Sr. The elder Greg made a name for himself when he opened the dive bar Tribeca Tavern in 1996. Both Gregs went into business together when they opened a small bar in the East Village in 2011. The focus would be on delicious burgers and locally-produced craft beer. Initially dubbed "The Burger Shop", it was later renamed "The Village Joker", and then they finally settled on "Augurs Well" in 2013. Regardless of the name, the bar has earned a reputation for being one of the best craft beer and burger joints in New York City. Greg Sr. sadly passed away in 2021, not long after the Tribeca Tavern became a victim of the pandemic. Greg Jr. and his sister Angela opened Grand Eleven, a cocktail bar initially dreamed up by their late father, in 2023. I recently visited Augurs Well while I was in the Village to see a concert. I arrived a few hours before the show so I could grab some beers and bites beforehand. I had seen Augurs Well mentioned on several lists of great beer bars in NYC, so it was my first stop of the evening. The place was small, cozy and inviting. The draught list was very impressive! I first ordered a draught pour of Timber Ales' "The Offer" (Double IPA). It had lovely notes of citrus and tropical fruit. In addition to their signature burgers and beer selection, the bar also makes craft cocktails and offers sandwiches, wings, tacos, nachos, and other various bar bites. However, I only had eyes for a burger. I grabbed a seat at the bar, ordered the "Bacon Cheeseburger" (double cheeseburger topped w/ bacon, grilled onions, pickles, served w/ curly fries & chipotle sauce) and paired it with a draught pour of Grimm Artisanal Ales' "Maximum Happiness" (IPA). It was a match made in Heaven! The burger was so juicy and flavorful and the beer had lovely notes of berries and tropical fruit. Have had Augurs on my radar to try for a while now and finally had the opportunity to swing by while waiting for a nearby dinner reservation. They have a great draft list and can list, so there is something for everyone. Food looked solid but I didn't try any since I was headed to dinner. Cozy little spot to get some food, a drink, or both. Plenty of seating at the bar, or at tables. Both food and drinks come out promptly with no fanfare, but plenty of taste. Bartender was friendly and made a good solid drink! No complaints there! The only thing is that on a busy night, they needed two bartenders, and the 2nd one didn't come till later in. The place gets slammed pretty fast. We didn't have any issues getting our drinks on time, because we were literally in front of the bartender, but others seemed to feel a bit of pressure to order when they came around to check on things because things got so crazy busy. Really wish that they had more help. The kitchen staff were really helpful. They'd bring out our food and take away the empty plates and other flotsam, so that the bartender could focus on making drinks. After walking around the East Village, we ended up at Augurs Well, a cozy little bar with a laid-back vibe. It wasn't too busy for a Friday night, even with a football game on TV and a few people at the bar. We stood by the bar top next to the window, picked two drinks, and enjoyed our conversation. The bar offers a nice mix of craft beers, creative cocktails, and classic drinks. The staff is friendly and attentive. It's a great spot for casual hangouts or just unwinding after a long day. One of our favorite places to hang out with our friends and people watch! There's outdoor seating, and they also extend their outdoor seating onto the street Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays. They have a great selection of beers, frozen drinks, cocktails, and wines. The staff are super friendly in helping you decide on drinks if you're overwhelmed by the beer menu. Hungry? My husband and I tried and failed to walk into PDT one Friday night last month, but on the plus side, we had a pleasant walk around the East Village and enjoyed some down time at Augurs Well, the calm, lovely bar next door. We were able to swan in and grab two seats at the bar and get immediate service from the nice bartender with the man bun. I'm not even drinking these days, but I generally like sitting at a bar and this was a good one, low-key and attractive with a friendly vibe. My husband got a couple of draft beers we don't see in California, and I got a Diet Coke, which we later discovered was on the house. We don't live in New York, so it might be a while before we come back to Augurs Well (though we do plan to get into PDT one day, in which case we may as well grab a beer here too). We liked this place, though, and would make good use of it if we spent more time in the neighborhood. read more

Outstanding tavern. They have about a dozen beers on draft with a focus on in-season craft beers. We came in January and they had four stouts plus variety of other options. In addition to a great beer selection, they have a great whiskey selection with some awesome bourbons. They had Wellers, Eagle rare, and a bunch more. I didn't try any food. Their menu has all of the bar classics like burgers, fries, and more. They only have one tv but it's located right over the center of the bar so you can see it from most of the seats. read more

Big fan of Augurs Well! If you love craft beer you have to come here. They always have a new and amazing selection of local beers anytime I go. The prices are not necessarily cheap but the quality and variety of beers make it worth it. I also love their frozen drinks! They have one of the best frozen margaritas in EV and also serve a yummy frozen mai tai. If you're drunk and hungry after drinking all those DIPAs or margs, they have pretty good food options...standard American bar fare but they do it well. I recommend the loaded nachos, mozz sticks, tots, and chicken parm hero but the burger and wings are solid tooZ It's fun to sit at the bar inside and watch a game on one of their TVs or you can sit outside when it's nice out and people watch on St Marks. One of the best places in the East Village to have a local craft beer, if you're looking for a knowledgeable and fun bar staff, low-key atmosphere, and unpretentious clientele. A bar with a television and a few eclectic tables, including one larger communal one, fill the wood-lined room. The draft beer and food menus are on chalk boards by the bar, the bottled beer list above the communal table. The draft list rotates 16 brews most frequently tapped from terrific New York City and regional breweries, the likes of Grimm, Finback, LIC, KCBC, Other Half, Hudson Valley, and many more. A few will be from interesting breweries elsewhere around the country. A long bottled and canned list expands on the domestics, plus some international. Other than beer, the bartenders can mix cocktails on demand or serve up a whiskey or other good liquor. Wines are limited, although there will be something by the glass. The food menu has burgers, fries, and sandwiches, but I've not tried it, coming here most often pre or post dinner just for a beer. Augurs Wells is a bar whose laid back look (call it upscale dive) belies its quality beer offerings. Prices are commensurate, and clientele are not here looking for a deal. stumble upon this bar by accident because my friend wanted to go to this famous spot nearby but it was fully booked and we didn't have any reservation. literally just walk pass by and since we're too lazy to look for anywhere else we decided to walk in. I honestly love the ambience. there's no ultra loud music so we can comfortably talk without having to scream our heads off. there were decent amount of people. really like the overall vibe. there were extensive choices of beer and i hve to admit i'm ultimately amateur when it comes to drinks and all. went with the House Lager instead and it turned out to taste good. nothing overpriced nothing over the top, i actually much prefer this place than other overrated place read more

Been here a couple different times while in NYC. This place is a craft beer hidden gem. As a beer fan, when you read about places to visit in NYC with a killer menu this place somehow gets omitted. The seating area is simple: first come, first serve. I've had different experiences with the staff here. Sometimes they're super helpful, regardless of how busy it is. I was recently introduced to Augurs Well after visiting Proletariat - a standard stop on my NYC beer crawl. Little did I know, Augurs Well would become one of my favorite beer bars to visit and will be a regular stop on my future beer crawls. Maybe it's the fact that it's not fancy, not trying to be special and just has great beer? I don't know but I am drawn to it - both for it's tap list and the fact that not 'too' many people seem to know about it - this could also just be me coming at off-peak times. Needless to say, each time I've come here, I've been impressed with the tap list and don't generally want to leave. Much like being up at the poker table, I will eventually just have to walk away (I may have less $ after leaving here but I am richer...in beer!) Although I haven't tried their food and missed their anniversary party recently (their list was stupid looking...and I mean stupid in a good way), I can't help but give them the highest honor possible. I'm not one to write online reviews but for this place I had to make an exception. While it may look like just another bar on St marks it most certainly is not that. Come for the great beer, cocktails and scotch, come back for the most amazing food you have ever tried. Chef marteen knows what he's doing. The BEST sliders in the east village, and they just started offering loaded chicken nachos (it's worth the trip for the nachos alone). Love the well Edit: 3 years later! I have decided that the Philly cheesesteak is 100% the food I would request if I had to have a last meal on death row. New York on Sunday, big city,takin' a nap...unless you wake up from the nap and head down to Augurs Well like I did last Sunday. And although I love my naps, I'm glad I spent a few hours downtown. Allow me to break it down for you... First, it's a cool space, that, although small, is well laid out. Second, the beer selection is pretty good. There were a lot of pints priced at $8 but that's not crazy out of line for good beer in Manhattan. Third, the handsome bartender was friendly and knew his beers. He also kept the 30+ guys I was with from my beer club in beers all afternoon. He didn't get much rest but he really hustled. We will definitely go back to this place! read more

Should have reviewed this place a long time ago. My wife and I were lucky enough to stumble into this place while walking through the East Village during a long weekend on vacation. We've made sure to stop by at least once, every time we're visiting NYC. Initially we went because of their beer selection, but now we keep going because of the staff. Last time we went it was pretty busy. We were at a communal table and sorta boxed in by random strangers sharing the table with us. The owner must have recognized us, as he came over and took our beer order. It was a nice gesture and something we definitely appreciated. Was taking a stroll down the LES and decided to check this place out. It has a very dim setting with funky decor. My friend and I sat at the bar for a few beers. Our bartender, Brian, was super friendly and helped us with beer selections. I got the "Grimm in mid air" beer which had an interesting, but not too bitter taste. Came here one night for drinks and burgers - this place is so alive with great music. They have some bar seating and some table seating. It's a quaint place with a huge selection of beers and alcohol. We only came here because my good friend who use to be a baker in the area said we had to come in and I'm glad we did. Passed the time here waiting for entrance into PDT. Sweet relief from the crammed bars filling this block. It was labeled "Village Joker" so perhaps they are re-branding. We didn't have the burgers, but we did enjoy the beers. They have a nice mix of middle-of-the-road and high-end brews (Founders Breakfast Stout was on tap). THey were also nice about charging our phones for us. The only knock against them is that it was a bit cold inside. The place is small and did not seem prepared to weather the recent 15-degree frost-pocalyse, so if you're sensitive to winter temps, keep that in mind.
