So we reached out to Christine and In Tandem for a consultation. I honestly have always been a bit skeptical and afraid of home birth, so I came armed with a lot of questions. But once we talked (virtually) to Christine, we immediately felt compassion and care. She is the perfect guide - never pushing her own agenda, listening, but not afraid to give you her opinion. She backs everything up with science and her experience. Christine put us at ease throughout our pregnancy - That was the exact opposite to what we had experienced at our hospitals. She always listened, and even involved our oldest kiddo during visits. Christine and her team were amazing during our son's birth, we felt so safe and cared for. Whereas in the traditional obstetric model you typically see your provider one time at 6 weeks (often just to make sure you don't have any signs or symptoms of postpartum mood disorder, to discuss birth control, and to clear you for sex and physical activity), Christine sees clients and their new babies about 6 times in the first 6ish weeks after birth. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all postpartum visits have been at home. These visits are about so much more than just you and your baby's physical well-being; they are focused on the entire family, involving older kiddos in the home, and it's evident that Christine genuinely cares about how everyone is adjusting and doing emotionally. For the first two weeks of your baby's life, Christine's license includes the provision of all routine pediatric care, saving you from additional appointments or trips out of the home so you as the birthing person can focus on recovering and celebrating your growing family. I called Hillman City medical to see if I could have an annual visit/labs done. They scheduled me for the following week. I went in and to my surprise, had a very thorough initial intake/work up done. Labs were done right in the room versus me heading to a lab and waiting to be called. I was only expecting my usual cholesterol and metabolic panel labs. I reported eczema and coughing during the middle of the night. I had a steroid inhaler prescribed for my night coughing fits I had ever since my COVID infection. I had been finding myself coughing every week or two since catching COVID as an awakening call in the middle of the night. I had many restless nights from the intense, successive coughing and each time, I tested negative. After two months of inhaler use, I haven't had a single coughing fit. Amazing. For my eczema, I had tacrolimus prescribed. I stopped picking up my medication because my insurance restricted the drug to prior authorization only and had been using steroids for eczema flares. The clinic was able to quickly appeal insurance and I was able to pick up the medication. Aside from thorough work up, the part I thought was neat was Dr Đang Do went and discussed my coughing fit with the other physician. Having one doctor is great but when they share their knowledge amongst each other, even better.

I was pregnant with my first baby this summer, and Dr. Kundacina was brought in the room to assess why baby wasnt descending after hrs of pushing. She never introduced herself, came to my bedside or even asked how I was. In a dimly litroom, I had no idea where she was in relation to my body, and without verbal cue or counting, shoved her entire hand in my vagina mid push during a contraction. I immediately clammed up and she continued to try getting her hand in. Never once asked why I clammed up or began shaking immensely after this, instead told me to "relax your legs and bottom" over and over. There was no emotional support, coaching to help relax, or assess my mental well being after this. That was the first if many violations during a really long, sad labor. Violations to my body continued from many providers, with no apology or care for me as a person. Please don't see this provider if you are wanting compassionate or trauma informed care. I only saw midwife Ariel at this location. I respected her input, until I read my discharge notes. The wording she used was one step away from 1959's calling women hysterical. When I had low milk supply, common with traumatic births, she expressed doubt that it was a hormonal imbalance and in a really patronizing tone, said " you're just too tired and stressed for your body to make milk." When I kept advocating for blood work and my test results came back abnormally low, there was never even a response from her or any sense of validation, or apology for expressing doubt about what I was feeling and knowing to be true (I had tried weeks of power pumping, galactogues, tinctures, rest, pills, etc). Could not recommend providers at this office. One star only because Yelp requires that as a minimum.

From broken bones, to allergic reactions to late night FaceTime phone consults to informed vax info and everything in between, Dr. Falanga is a rare find. She's a great fit for my family. It's true that years ago the front desk gal wasn't very organized or friendly, and I have had to play phone tag with her insurance guy a few times. But honestly there's ALWAYS delays in medical insurance, and I've had way worse problems at other doctors' offices. The medical field is just a tad disorganized overall. BUT, they've upgraded to a well organized, quirky woman for the front desk. I've been through several insurance providers over that time and our coverage has varied but I've kept going to Nature Family Medicine even if it means paying a little more out of pocket.
